Can't send IMessages from the mac properly and turning off auto correct

2013-11-01 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
It appears I can’t send IMessages from my mac, unless my contacts message me
first. Does anyone know what this is and How to fix it?

Also, How do you turn off auto correct? I find it really annoying when typing,
and prefer to fix spelling mistakes manually.
Hope everyone has a great day.
Andrew

unread email messages

2013-11-01 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
Just wondering, It appears email messages become unread when I arrow through
them and when the cursor passes them.

I only what them to be unread when I press VO J to interact with them. How is
this done?

RE: unread email messages

You mean you want the messages to be unread until you interact with them?
Turn off the preview pain and perhaps set the layout to classic?
Definitely turning off the preview pain will help.

How exactly do you turn the preview pane off? I've seen instructions on it

voiceover not responding

2013-11-01 Thread May and Noah
Ok, trying again since I didn’t get an answer the first time.

I have checked everything I could think of and for whatever reason since the
update to mavericks my computer or voiceover will now go to sleep I guess after
I don’t interact with it for a minute and it will take it at least 30 seconds
to respond. Is there any reason this could be happening?

I tried closing things like mail to see if that was stalling it out. I have it
set not to go to sleep or in screen saver mode and that doesn’t seem to be
doing anything either. Any ideas? Thanks.

Try doing so in the file menu. When you do that, the standard save dialog will
pop open.

It’s supposed to be the Downloads folder off the home folder but I think that
broke.

You need a remap program within Windows to change the behaviour. Voice-Over
doesn't release keys when VMWare is running. Something I raised ages ago with

Hi, I think its more about how many files and folders are in there as opposed
to size on disk bu ti might be wrong, my large fodler contains about 1000 items

I know that is really large but with mountain lion i had no problems.

HI Amilio,
Thanks for sharing. I'm pretty keen to start doing more to help us coordinate

sharing information is a good first step.

Re: Super Duper?

2013-11-01 Thread Nicholas Parsons
1. If you want your backup clone to be bootable, which you do, then it needs to
have its own partition.
2. This can easily be done with Disc Utility. You need to make sure the
partition is created in the Mac Extended Gernaled format using GID Partition
Table. I'm sorry my spelling of these terms isn't correct but the other options
are different enough that you'll know the one I mean.
Cheers,

os reinstalled multiple questions

2013-11-01 Thread jean parker
Hello All:
Last Thursday my Mac got fried in a power surge in which my disk drive was
blown out. Yes I had a surge protector and yes Applle care paid for the
replacement of my disk drive. It took a week because they had to send to
Bangalore for replacement and it took time. Then the Time machine wouldn't
restore properly because they installed a version of Mountain Lion just prior
to the one I had and didn't find it useful to tell me that. Go figure.
Anyway, I have it back now and after being forced to use a borrowed windows
computer for a week I am very glad to finally have it back.
So now, I have a lot of questions about how to get things back the way they
were prior to the crash. I will begin with the fundamentals and work my way
down to the refinements later.

1. For whatever reason time machine restored my data and email but would not
restore either my apps or bookmarks. Is there a place in the app store where I
can find my previous downloads and reinstall them? I am currently in India and
all I get when I go to the app store is a lot of nonsense about games and
nothing I care about. Naturally, there is a lot of stuff on there about
Mavericks but I have enough problems at present without that. See, I have been
reading this list while I was in windows hell. I just want things back the way
they were, thank you. I try to get onto the US site and can't make any
headway. Suggestions please?

2. Where do I find the voiceover voices? I want Serena back!

3. I think my email is restored properly but I want the most recent messages
at the bottom of theithe list. I have uncheck the box for having the most
recent at the top of the list but there doesn't seem to be an option for having
them at the bottom.

4. Because my settings didn't restore I have to redo my web settings but I
can't remember what they were. Any general settings I should apply to make
life easier?

I think those are the big one's for now pending my discovering new fundamental
changes later on.
As always, all help is appreciated.

Jean

Pages: exporting to other formats

2013-11-01 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

If you’re using the new Pages, the export function does not work as expected.
Whatever you select in the Export submenu has no effect on the format. You have
to interact with each Unknown on the next screen until you find the format you
want, then bring the mouse and do a VO-Shift-Space bar click.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Pages: exporting to other formats

2013-11-01 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Anne,

Yes, I’ve noticed that as wel. It especially came to light when I had a
Numbers file I was sharing with my wife. I haven’t yet upgraded her system to
10.9 so her iWork is only version 4.3. Needless to say, she couldn’t open my
file. It appears that the “Unknown”’s are in the same order as the menu. Not
sure why they have the options under the Export submenu if you end up having to
choose in the dialog anyway. Oh well, just another thing to tally up for Apple
to fix in these new apps.

Re: voiceover not responding

2013-11-01 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Make sure that that you have it set the way you want it in both the Battery and
Power Adaptor tabs in the Energy Saver pane. It certainly isn’t recommended,
though, to never have your unit go to sleep while using the battery as it will
drain much faster. The entering of a password after Sleep setting is in the
Security pane of System Prefs. Apple also recommends you use this setting,
especially if you have iCloud Keychain syncing turned on.

You need a remap program within Windows to change the behaviour. Voice-Over
doesn't release keys when VMWare is running. Something I raised ages ago
with Apple and they blame VMWare. Of course VMWare blame Apple.

I've set up the capslock key so that it now acts as a voiceover key on the

acting like the insert key for JAWS.

I've set my keyboard layout in JAWS for laptop.

Is there anything I need to do specifically in windows or Fusion or JAWS to
make it work correctly?

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Apple testing Mail update for OS X Mavericks to fix Gmail, stability, and smart mailbox issues | 9to5Mac

2013-11-01 Thread Jamie Pauls
I found the following article quite interesting and thought the list might
find it so as well.

Begin Article:

Since the launch of OS X Mavericks last week, many users have been reporting
widespread, various, consistent issues within Apple's bundled Mail
application.

Many of the issues have mainly affected users of Google's Gmail email
service, and some of the issues have to do with receiving messages, sorting
messages into folders, and deleting messages.

Apple is aware of the issue and is testing a fix for the problem.

An updated Mail application has been seeded to both Apple employees
internally and testers within Apple's customer AppleSeed program.

The updated Mail app is Version 7.0 and is labeled as build 1822. The OS X
Mavericks 10.9.0 Mail app, for comparison, is Version 7.0 with build number
1816.

Apple tells testers that the update fixes issues with Gmail, smart
mailboxes, and overall stability. Apple also asks these users to test for
the following:

- Use Mail with your usual Mail accounts, including iCloud, Gmail, Exchange,
etc.
- Send Mail messages
- Receive and check for new Mail messages at the intervals you expect it
- Read and move Mail messages to folders on your mail server, folders on
your Mac, smart folders.
- Delete Mail messages as appropriate
- Undo move or delete actions with your Mail messages
- Mark messages read/unread in both your mail provider's webpage and Mail
and verify they stay in sync.

The updated Mail application is available as a patch download, not as a full
update to OS X Mavericks. Sources say that OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 is already
well into development, but it is unclear if these Mail fixes will be
available as a standalone update or rolled into that upcoming OS X Mavericks
10.9.1 release. Apple asks testers to provide feedback through a dedicated
communication channel, and the company refers to this update as "important."

RE: Apple testing Mail update for OS X Mavericks to fix Gmail, stability, and smart mailbox issues | 9to5Mac

2013-11-01 Thread Jamie Pauls
I think we can safely assume that the accessibility team is still hard at
work. I don't think we'll ever see routine mention of Voiceover in the
mainstream media. It just isn't sexy enough. I wasn't really happy with iOS
7 on my iPhone until 7.0.3 and now the world is round for me again. As
someone who hasn't yet upgraded to Mavericks, perhaps it is easy for me to
say this, but I don't think we should all throw up our hands in despair just
yet. There are plenty of people in the sighted community who are
experiencing quite a bit of heart burn with Mavericks and I doubt that Apple
is oblivious to this fact. It may not be 10.9.1, but I feel quite certain
that future releases of Mavericks will bring improved productivity. I seem
to remember a few complaints about Mountain Lion as well when it was first
released. For the record, I plan to upgrade to Mavericks whenever I can
block out some time to do so.

How about testing it with Voice Over?

Hello Anne and others.
I found that if you choose a format in the export menu it works fine for me.
Just press tab to get away from the unknown elements and you will be able to
proceed through that dialog.

Manually updating iWorks programs in Mavericks

2013-11-01 Thread Daniel K. Gartmann

Hi,

I bought the iWork suite a couple of years ago.

I didn't manage to update Pages just after upgrading my Mac OS to
Mavericks. Does anyone know of a manual way to do this so I don't have
to purchase the apps again through the App store?

Note that I bought them before the App store came to the Mac.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards

Daniel

iPod Touch 5 Being Very Flaky With iTunes WiFi Sync

2013-11-01 Thread Teresa Cochran
hi, all,

This started happening today, so it could be an app store issue. I can go into
Settings, iTunes WiFi sync on my iPod and press the sync button, and it’ll
work, but when I try to do something in iTunes on my Mac, it says “Finding
iPod” for 30 seconds, and then my iPod entry disappears from the iTunes
sidebar. It’s very odd. I have automatic downloads turned on, syncing turned
on, etc. I have done all this with the iPod unplugged. Anyone know what could
be going on, or have the same issue?

Thanks,
Teresa

Re: how to remove email.trojan-350 virus from Mountain Lion

2013-11-01 Thread eric oyen
there are 2 decent (and accessible) anti-virus programs for the mac:
1. clamsav
2. avast

in my opinion, clamsav is the better of the 2.

here is where you can get it:

http://www.clamxav.com/download.php

Re: Pages: exporting to other formats

2013-11-01 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello all,

Here’s the response I got from Accessibility.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello and Thank you for the detailed feedback. It's always nice to have full
and complete descriptions along with steps to reproduce. These unlabeled areas
have been reported to the appropriate people.

In the meantime we can explain the dialog box to allow you to complete the
process. In the Pages File Menu, if you selected Word, then Word is
automatically selected in the export dialog.
If, at that point, you press Enter, then you will be taken to the Save as
Dialog box to choose where you want to save the exported file. The file will
export as a word doc with the default settings of
a) No password required to open the file and
b) Using the .docx format instead of the older .doc ( Word 1997-2003)
compatible format.

If instead you chose PDF in the Export Menu, then the dialog box will default
to PDF as the exported filed type. Pressing Enter will again then take you to
the Save as dialog box with the pre-determined
settings of Good Image quality and no password required to open the file.

If you choose to move within the dialog box, there are 5 tabbed areas: PDF,
Word, Plain Text, ePub, and Pages ’09. These are the 5 Unknown labels you are
hearing. Each has some further text or options associated with each option:

Under PDF, the text reads;
“To Change PDF layout settings, Choose File > Print.”
The PDF options are;

Re: Manually updating iWorks programs in Mavericks

2013-11-01 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Daniel,

You could try contacting Apple to get a code to download the new version of the
iWork suite. Alternatively, install Mountain Lion on an external disc and
install iWork, then upgrade to Mavericks on that disc and you’ll get the new
versions. They’ll then be in your purchase history and you can download them
onto your main HD.

Cheers,

Anne

Amadeus Pro

2013-11-01 Thread The Smiths
Hi

I have just purchased Amadeus Pro and wonder whether you can help me? When I
record with the internal microphone and built-in speakers, it picks up both
my speech and voiceover. If I try to plug in an external microphone, or even
headphones to monitor the recording, it doesn't include voiceover. How can I
make it include my speech and voiceover with an external microphone?

Regards Janine

Re: What Safari Extensions Do You Find Useful with Voiceover

2013-11-01 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Amazon Wish List just lets you add any item to your wish list. It doesn't have
to be on Amazon—it can be anywhere, including, for instance, the Apple Online
Store. I'm not sure how it works, but it seems to know some how when you're
viewing something you can buy, and it let's you add it to your wish list. It
doesn't show up when you're viewing an article, for example. A handy way to
keep track of the things you'd like to buy but can't afford right now, and to
have an answer when people ask you what you want for a birthday/Christmas.

Re: Apple testing Mail update for OS X Mavericks to fix Gmail, stability, and smart mailbox issues | 9to5Mac

2013-11-01 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Thanks for sharing the article. It's good news indeed Apple is on to this. For
the record, I certainly don't remember this many issues with Mountain Lion.
Mountain Lion was a smooth and problem free upgrade for me. It just introduced
cool new features, some VoiceOver improvements and I think perhaps one bug in
Safari. Although I think that Safari bug may have been in 10.8.1. I'm trying to
remain optimistic though and hope everything gets better at some vague point in
the future.

Re: os reinstalled multiple questions

2013-11-01 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi Jean,
I can only answer two of your questions:

For finding your purchases from the app store, press command 4 when you’re in
the app store. That’s where they are. Just so you know, Command 5 is for
updates.

For the voices, go to vo utility with vo f8. I just move down to the speech
category, but you can do a hot key for this too which I don’t know.
If Serena is not listed, go to customise and find her there.

Good luck. Sorry you had all that trouble.

That depends on the situation. In text, such as in a wordprocessor or email,
use option with the left or right arrows. In non-editing text, such as a file
