Hi, Make sure that that you have it set the way you want it in both the Battery and Power Adaptor tabs in the Energy Saver pane. It certainly isn’t recommended, though, to never have your unit go to sleep while using the battery as it will drain much faster. The entering of a password after Sleep setting is in the Security pane of System Prefs. Apple also recommends you use this setting, especially if you have iCloud Keychain syncing turned on.
