Hi Jonathan,

This is great. Please let us know when it is released. I'll purchase it as
soon as it is released. This is a needed service, and a read I very much look
forward to.

Re: question about time readout for Macbook battery

2013-06-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I think it would be even better if those numbers were read out as hours and
minutes, rather than just numbers. So, for instance, 90%, not charging, 3 hours
and 10 minutes remaining, or 50%, charging, 1 hour until charged.

Re: Problem hanging up my iPhone

2013-06-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI all,

I'm using a case. In fact, now you mention it, I've probably been having these
problems since I got my new JuicePack case. I also use a bluetooth headset from
time to time. It's the Bose bluetooth 2 earpiece thing. I seem to have the
problem when not using the bluetooth earpiece as well though.

Thanks, Tim, for the tip. I've used that sometimes, as it also prevents
VoiceOver from talking over the person to whom I'm talking when I get an
incoming message or email. I'll start using it more often now though as you
point out it's much easier than locking the screen which, by the way, I seem to
need to do several times throughout a call.

I might try using my iPhone without its case for a couple of days and see how
that goes. Knowing the way the world works though I'll probably drop and break
it on one of these days.

VoiceOver Incorrectly Announcing Call Recipient on iPhone

2013-06-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi list,

I've noticed recently VoiceOver will incorrectly announce the person I'm
calling on my iPhone. Whoever I call, it will tell me I'm calling my
girlfriend's iPhone. She was at the top of my favourites list and I thought
this might have something to do with it. I tried moving her, however, and the
problem persisted. Whoever I would call it says I'm calling her.

Also, when the call is in progress, I can swipe left or right and I seem to
move through two or three recent calls, one of them always being my
girlfriend's iPHone. I tried to test this a little more just now but everything
seems to be working fine at the moment. I'm guessing it's a temperamental
thing. I'm sure the problem will raise it's ugly head again, and when it does,
I'll take some more notes. But, in the meantime, if anyone has any ideas or
info about this I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,
Nic

Re: bluetooth headsets

2013-06-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi list,

does anyone on here use a bluetooth headset with the Mac? I seem to hear a fair
bit about bluetooth headsets with VoiceOver, but I'm not sure if this is just
with iOS devices or on the Mac as well. I have never had any luck with
bluetooth headsets on the Mac. I have some bluetooth headsets, including the
Bose bluetooth 2 earpiece, which work fantastically with iOS devices. However,
I just tried these the other day yet again with my Mac, this time my MacBook
Air, and ran into problems again.

When I first pair them they work fine. If, however, I turn them off and then on
again, I don't get any VoiceOver sound. I need to turn VoiceOver off and on
again before I can hear VoiceOver through the headset. Similarly, when the Mac
first boots up I can't hear any VoiceOver sound. I need to log in through
memory of the key presses and then turn VoiceOver off and on again.

I'd love to get the Aftershokz Bluez and the Bose AEW2 if they worked with
VoiceOver on the Mac.

Thoughts? Feelings? Suggestions?

Cheers,
Nic

If you have a built-in GPS receiver such as is the case with the iPhone, you

Re: Twitterrific and Twitter Etiquette

Hello Jonathan,

Great to hear about your forthcoming book, one which I will buy. You are right
about the availability of a lot of articles on the Net that address this topic,
but I have found nothing suitable that explains all of the facets of Twitter
systematically.

Though you have probably thought about this already, a similar book dealing
with Facebook from a blindness perspective would also be well worth purchasing!

Kindest regards,

Alex,

Can I just ask, as I may have missed this. My MacBook Air already gives me this
data.

I perform a VO MM and arrow to the battery level, there if my Air is charging I
here that it is on mains power and x many hours/minutes until full, likewise,
if I am operating on battery power I here Battery power time remaining x many
hours and minutes.

What does your script do differently?

Re: question about time readout for Macbook battery

2013-06-03 Thread Alex Hall
The script is part of a series of scripts that will let you speak a bunch of
data with one keystroke. So yes, you could vo-m-m, then vo-arrow (a tedious
task if you have a lot of apps in the menu extras area) until you find your
battery, then escape to return to where you were... Or you could assign this
script to a keystroke, then press the keystroke and hear your battery
information.

As to hours and minutes, remember that all these scripts are built around
templates. If you want a normal time readout, you'd type
$hours:$minutes
but if you want a more verbose method, you can just change your template to
$hours hours, $minutes minutes
and that'll do it. I'll try to add a keyword for "until full" or "remaining".
Ideally, I'd like to support simple if statements in templates, but I don't
know if that will be done anytime soon, if at all. Still, I'll work on it.

Alex,
Your late night expressions are sensational.
That made perfect sense to me.
Thanks for the distention between boot camp, not right for this

preferable.
I dare say as with everything computer people have their personal

Does apple have a favorite? A virtual tool they recommend or include in
their offerings? If not just how is this done?

Thanks again Alex,

Re: A Virtual structure review?

2013-06-03 Thread Alex Hall
Apple does not, but blind people do. Parallels and Virtualbox are both mostly
to totally inaccessible, so everyone I know uses VMWare Fusion. As to which is
better (a vm or bootcamp), it depends. VMs take up resources, so your Mac has,
say, half the ram it usually has and less of the processor. Also, there can be
some odd keyboard problems that cause trouble for screen readers, and it is
sometimes necessary to turn off Voiceover while in a vm, then turn it on to use
the mac. The flip side, though, is that bootcamp requires you to restart the
computer to boot into the OS you want, so you can't use both at the same time
and you can't do fancy things like clone your windows to copy it to another
computer, which you can do with a vm. However, since bootcamp lets Windows run
natively, there are no keyboard oddities and the booted OS, whichever it is,
can use the full resources of the computer. Oh, one more point: a vm can be set
to grow as necessary, taking up little room on the hard drive so long as there
is little on it. However, a bootcamp setup requires you to portion off a
section of your hard drive dedicated to Windows, which, if you over-estimate
your disk space needs, can lead to wasted space you could be using on the Mac
side of things.

Re: Blind Mice Movies Remembering Playback Position

2013-06-03 Thread -

Someone asked about:

"Any ideas how to get one of these files to remember your playback
position. I would think you would be able to."

They are mp3 format. I download them, put them on a flash drive and
listen on the nls player. Position like any file is kept, as are
navigation functions and bookmarks.

The question, though, is if this can be done when playing the movies in iTunes?
Not everyone is an NLS member, and you can't be at all if you're not in the

Re: VoiceOver Incorrectly Announcing Call Recipient on iPhone

2013-06-03 Thread Scott Berry
I haven't seen this issue. Just out of curiosity are you running the
most current 6.1.4 version of the softgware?

On 6/3/13 2:41, Nicholas Parsons wrote:

Cheers,
Nic

a program that allows me to create new folders on the iphone and Ipad

2013-06-03 Thread Scott Berry

Hey everyone,

What is a good app to allow me to have good control over creating and
editing folders and other control over tasks like uploading different
types of documents to my Iphone. I do have Pages and Number already for
my word processor but I'll also take other ideas on this as well ifthere
are other apps that people feel can do better or have better accessibility.

Re: question about time readout for Macbook battery

2013-06-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Cool. That sounds good. I just didn't know if we would have to type anything
else to indicate it was a string of text or whatever. Sounds like it will be
pretty simple. As for the remaining or to charged, it would be great, but
totally not necessary. To be honest, what I mostly care about is the
percentage. I find the time estimates can vary so much they're not really worth
relying on. I have a fairly good idea just from monitoring the percentage
status.

Frustrating Problem with QuickNav

2013-06-03 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

I'm curious to see if anyone else has this unbelievably frustrating problem
with QuickNav, where it just completely stops working. You can be using it fine
and then all of the sudden you can't even toggle it on or off with the arrows,
and the only way to get QuickNav to start working again is to hit command F5
and toggle VO off and on. This is starting to once again happen all the time to
me, and I'm sure it is yet another issue with VO. It is frustrating because you
can be in the middle of something, and then you have to do a VO reset and start
all over again. To answer a question which I am sure is coming, I did a clean
install of mountain lion in January, and I was hoping this would be one of the
issues that would have fixed, but it hasn't. Thanks.

Re: Frustrating Problem with QuickNav

2013-06-03 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Brian,

I've had instances when I cannot activate QuickNav. I don't have to turn VO
off and on to fix this. My belief is that if an activity is in progress, one
cannot toggle QuickNav on and off. I say this because sometimes I hear a busy
indicator spoken by VO. Just a theory.

Hey Les, I don't think any activities were running when it happened this

then stopped working the next. I toggled VO off and on and it was working again.

Re: Seeing Eye GPS APP

2013-06-03 Thread Cheree Heppe
Cheree Heppe here:
If the seeing eye app requires an external gps receiver, wouldn't that defeat
the purpose of using it with modern technologies such as the i-devices? Why
would an app with such pre-release hype tye itself to legacy tech?
There is a commercially available app called waze, that's w a z e, that
incorporates user feedback in real time and, so far, offers driving directions
only. This app would be great if a pedestrian mode came on line.
It will be interesting to see how the seeing eye app develops.
It seems to be working backwards to return to niche apps specially designed for
limited user bases when so much is in place now.

Re: Seeing Eye GPS APP

2013-06-03 Thread Alex Hall
Not at all. The app will work with gps on phones and cellular-enabled iPads.
You only need a receiver if you have a wifi-only device, and even then the app
won't work right if it does not cache maps locally. Any server-based gps app,
as many of them are, requires a constant data connection to work, and if the
Sendero app does not cache maps it, too, will need such a connection.

Audio highjack pro and recording.

Hello,

I'm trying to record both the microphone input, and VoiceOver with audio
highjack pro. Unfortunately, I can only get it to record either or, not both at
the same time, which is what I need to do. Does anyone know of any solutions to
this issue without having to spend any money on a mixer of some type?

Hi Esther and Interested Others,

Well, I ordered this product before midnight eastern time last evening. I just
received my receipt and did not receive the discount. I used the link in the
e-mail I received to report a problem and hope this discount will be honored.

Re: diverting messages to specific mailbox

2013-06-03 Thread Traci
Hello, funny this topic has come up. I was just trying to create this exact
rule via my Mac.

I could not get the messages to move to the mailbox. I'm guessing the problem
was I wasn't using a complete from address. I wanted all messages from
facebookmail.com to skip the inbox and go to a Facebook mailbox. I created the
mailbox just fine via my Mac, but I needed to go over to gmail to create the
filter.

BTW, I was having a heck of a time with the gmail website. I ended up finding
the direct link to the basic html site.
mail.google.com/mail/h/

That should work. I'm definitely bookmarking that one. :)

Re: diverting messages to specific mailbox

2013-06-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

This should have been totally workable using rules in Mail on the Mac by
choosing these options respectively in the Criteria area:

• "From", "Contains" and entering facebookmail in the Edit field.

I agree that GMail is less than friendly at getting around. It's not
impossible by any means but not particularly easy either.

Later...

Hi,

No, because from what I know, you can only record one session at a time, and
making a session for VoiceOver itself isn't possible.
I want to record my own voice, plus VoiceOver at the same time.

Re: Blind Mice Movies Remembering Playback Position

2013-06-03 Thread -

The nls player does mp3, just as do scores of other such commercial
products universally. Maintaining position when shut off is ubiquitous in
them.

I did not read the original request as limited to itunes but one of how
access could be achieved wwhile retaining position..

The question, though, is if this can be done when playing the movies in iTunes?
Not everyone is an NLS member, and you can't be at all if you're not in the
United States.

They are mp3 format. I download them, put them on a flash drive and listen on
the nls player. Position like any file is kept, as are navigation functions
and bookmarks.

Standard BT GPS recievers with iDevices -was- Re: Seeing Eye GPS APP

2013-06-03 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi Mike, can you clarify your comment about the external receivers not working
with iDevices?

Obviously the Dual Electronics XGPS and Garmin GLO both work quite nicely with
the iDevices and they are standard units. What did you mean to say?

Thanks a bunch and have a great day!

Smiles,

Cara :)

Re: After shocks blue tooth headset.

2013-06-03 Thread Phil Halton
Yes, I use them. Actually I don't use them much, but I bought them and they
work quite well. I just don't have a need for bluetooth headsets anymore and
so they're sitting unused on my shelf.

You wear them with the band behind the head and they come over the ears and
rest on the bone in front of the ear. Kind of like wearing glasses
backwards.

As I say they work fine and connect easily to the iPhone, I just don't need
them as I thought I would.

If interested, I would sell them to you at a discount, say $50 U.S.
I assume you are in the U.S.?

Beta testers needed for accessible Mud Client

Hello

My name is Tyler and I'm an apple developer. I've been making a MUD
client (as I've never been satisfied with the ones available for mac). The
client has regular expression support as well as the standard aliases triggers
timers and variables. If you'd be interested in beta testing the client please
let me know.

Wonder how much those receivers are. Are they bluetooth? I have several
bluetooth receivers that do not work, the holux 1000, the qstarz 818,
and the iblue 737. These use mtk chip sets which are quite accurate.
Each receiver costs around $20

The receivers are standard, and Mike, I bet when you bought some or all of

it didn't cost me 20 bucks. I haven't checked the prices of the two that Cara

Re: Audio highjack pro and recording.

2013-06-03 Thread Ricardo Walker
Yes,

you are correct. Unfortunately, if using later versions of audio hijack,
Voiceover users can not record another source, as well as the mic, on a single
file. What I do is use a hijack script that will start recording all currently
hijacked sessions simultaneously. Then, I import both files into iTunes and
export so now its all in 1 file.

Can you tell me, then, if there is a delay? I'm thinking about getting these,
as I do a lot of walking with my phone as a gps and would love wireless,
non-blocking headphones. I've heard that bluetooth has a delay, though, and am

Annoying to the point of making you switch back to wired headphones? Thanks.

Re: Standard BT GPS recievers with iDevices -was- Re: Seeing Eye GPS APP

2013-06-03 Thread Alex Hall
Here's the thing: to work with iOS, a bluetooth receiver has to be certified by
Apple. Some are, and most aren't which is why some work and some don't. A quick
google search should provide a list of compatible receivers. Again, though, if
the Sendero app does not cache maps, this is all moot since a data connection
will also be required.

Re: A Virtual structure review?

2013-06-03 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi Alex,
Again terrific answers.
So if I understand this, it is sort of like a house.
bootcamp requires you to basically pick up your keys go outside and
stand in the yard for a while before you can do a task.
where the virtual structure like emware fusion simple lets you open
the desk
for that extra pad of paper so to speak?
The down side as you explain to vm is possible keyboard problems. Still
if you are using whatever speech program you have for windows or Linux,
you would
want to turn voiceover off regardless would you not?

seems less confusing for whatever program you are running in virtual mode.
How complicated is the emware fusion setup to accomplish?
I suppose it is free? it strikes me that boot camp may be more trouble
then it is worth since
one loses the swift ease of just doing the task you want to do.

And more than likely those tasks will be fewer and fewer over time.

Thanks again,
Karen

say, half the ram it usually has and less of the processor.

Really confused about VueScan

2013-06-03 Thread Chris Gilland
OK, I'm really confused about Vuescan. I'm seriously thinking about getting
the Pro version, but will the version for the Mac... notice, I did not say
for I O S, I'm speaking of the version specifically for OSX, will it perform
OCR recognition? I hear that I will have to probably use it in conjunction
with something like fine Reader in order to take the scanned document, and
have it be recognized. I just want to be sure I'm getting the best bang for
my buck. $99 is a bit steap for Fine Reader. I'll do it, but only if it's
my only option. I'm aware of Docuscan, and do use it, but what I don't like
about Docuscan is the fact that it only seems to scan one page at a time.
So, say for example, that I want to scan a book. I don't want to destroy
the book and rip the spine apart just to scan the thing. I like being able
to do like I did in the windows days, with Openbook, or K1000, where I could
lay both pages face down on the scanner bed, hit scan, and then allow it to
scan two paged mode. With Docuscan, it's not seeming to recognize that
there are two pages separated by a spine, and scan each one individually, so
yeah, that's the only real objection I have to using Docuscan. On the other
hand though, Between Fine Reader, and! Vuescan, that's gonna be nearly $200
by the time it's all said and done.

this is why I'm just wondering if there may be another better sollution that
would definitely beyond a doubt give me that two page scanning ability, and
obviously, that would be accessible.

Chris.

Re: A Virtual structure review?

2013-06-03 Thread Alex Hall
Well, so long as no windows keystrokes are also VO keystrokes, you don't really
need to turn it off. Plus, most VM managers have a special key to toggle
between giving the virtual OS the keyboard and giving the Mac the keyboard, so
as long as the virtual OS has it and you don't hit that key, you're fine.

I love the explanation of the house, I'm going to have to borrow that! Yes, the
setup is tedious, and yes, I now find myself seldom using Windows and wishing
I'd just spent the cash for a VM in the first place. It took about a year, but
I'm now so used to the mac and the integration it has with my iPhone that I
don't boot Windows except when I want to play an audio game. In fact, I'm
buying VMWare Fusion for my business Mac, instead of going the bootcamp route
on that one like I did my personal mac a couple years ago. I've never done
this, so can't speak to the ease of setup, but I will let you all know once i
do it. Still, I hear the process is easy, aside from Windows installations
being inaccessible of course, so no big deal there.

I also have this problem. I don't think I have any activities running when this
happens. Similarly, in Safari, sometimes single letter navigation doesn't work.
VoiceOver will tell me there's no headings found even when I know there are
headings on the page. Sometimes using the down arrow will work when the single
letter navigation will not.

Also, sometimes in a text field, VoiceOver will act is if QuickNav is turned on
even though it isn't. A down arrow will move me by word, for instance, rather
than going directly to the next line. I often have to toggle QuickNav on and
off a few times, and press the control and option keys separately a few times,
to get this to work.

Right now, frankly, I don't know of a better pairing option then VUe Scan and
Abby Fine reader. You want serious OCR? Than Abby Fine Reader's really the
best way to get that now for the Mac. VUE Scan will do OCR without that,
however, be aware that the results are often not as clean and, it will not do

Hi guys
We talked about this a long time ago, but has anybody used iPal? I checked it
out at a convention, but it's expensive, and I don't need that type of expense.
I would've I do a lot of scanning.

Right now, frankly, I don't know of a better pairing option then VUe Scan and
Abby Fine reader. You want serious OCR? Than Abby Fine Reader's really the
best way to get that now for the Mac. VUE Scan will do OCR without that,
however, be aware that the results are often not as clean and, it will not do
automatic page image rotation like Abby will.

Can you tell me, then, if there is a delay? I'm thinking about getting

You wear them with the band behind the head and they come over the ears
and rest on the bone in front of the ear. Kind of like wearing glasses
backwards.

As I say they work fine and connect easily to the iPhone, I just don't
need them as I thought I would.

If interested, I would sell them to you at a discount, say $50 U.S.

Re: Standard BT GPS recievers with iDevices -was- Re: Seeing Eye GPS APP

2013-06-03 Thread Mary Otten
NOel,
I think you hit the nail on the head. You'd have less battery drain if you used
an external receiver, and you'd theoretically have better accuracy. But you'd
also have to carry an extra little device. And if you're happy with the iPhone
and no extra receiver, and battery drain hasn't been a problem, why bother? If
you do go the external gps route, you will have to get one of those receivers
that Apple has approved, such as the two that Cara mentioned.

Switch open programs to the left and right

2013-06-03 Thread Terje Strømberg
Hi

I read in a Norwegian forum that you can use Shift - Command - Tab to go left
in open programs, and if you release the Shift key while still using Command +
Tab you move to the right.

Pressing Shift - Command + Tab, you move to the left again. This may be good
only on standard usb with numeric keys.

Take care

 Hello.

Just wishing to know if anyone has used the new After shoks Bluetooth
headsets? My ears are too small for an conventional bluetooth headset so
would like to know what people think and how one would put it on.

 Thanks.

 Kawal.

So wait… What should one use for scanning?

2013-06-03 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I thought Docuscan was the best for scanning. Now, though, I'm hearing about
Prizmo, bbyy Fine Reader, VuScan... Which is the best? I don't scan books, but
the option to do so in the future would be nice. I know Docuscan syncs your
files, but wouldn't Prizmo do that? So which is best, in your opinion? Thanks.

Have a great day,

Re: So wait… What should one use for scanning?

2013-06-03 Thread Henry D. Hollithron
Good Day:

Frankly, I prefer Abby Fine Reader express and use DocuScan only for
very casual scanning. Of course, I am somewhat biased, since I study multiple
languages, and DocuScan only recognizes English, but, in my experience, even in
English, Abby Fine Reader does best with, for instance, scanned PDFs. I tried
Prismo on a PDF that I recognized with Abby Fine Reader, and the results, while
not terrible, were not at the same level. To be fair, I haven't done to much
with Prismo. As for VuScan, it, from what I understand, provides a unified
interface for various scanners, but does not actually perform recognition.
Still, others say it is the easiest program to use for efficiently scanning a
large number of pages. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about VuScan.

HTH:

download sound on mac

2013-06-03 Thread jean parker
All:
Since you are all so creative and helpful, here is my question of the day.
Is there a way to have the mac play a sound when a download is finished so you
don't have to check the status every time?
