Is I Tunes broken?
Hi All. Since I updated Itunes, plug my I Phone in, Itunes is not opening. It was fixed in the last update but I think Apple have broken it again! Is this so for anyone else? Re: Chess clock, was, Re: Excell macros in numbers
Hi there, The two clocks must be linked, meaning when you are timing a game, you must be able to stop one clock and have the other run with one keystroke. That is why I believe apple script is the way to go, for you can have it integrate with voiceover. For example, Starting the clock for white, use right option +1. For the black clock, right option + 2. For pausing both clocks, right option + 3. For reading time remaining on the white clock, right option + 4. Black time remaining is then right option + 5. For different clock settings, which should be a dialogue, you should use right option + 6. I know that apple script is powerful, so I cannot see why this can't be done. The only issue is that I have no idea where to start. Re: High Traffic List
Hi guys personally, I like using the cloud for high-traffic list. That way, I can set the iPhone or the Mac, for that matter, to show message by conversation. Then, it's a simple matter for me to manage list traffic. That way, everything syncs with no trouble at all. Re: Chess clock, was, Re: Excell macros in numbers
Okay, so when the white clock starts, the black automatically stops, right? I'm actually not sure a script can do this, since it would have to sit in the background constantly. Calling a script with the keyboard commander (or any commander for that matter) starts the script, so there would be no way to, say, pause a clock since each keypress would start the script over again. I think you'd have to have an actual app for this purpose, perhaps with scripts to control it, but I doubt a script in itself will work here. Can any scripting experts tell me if I'm wrong? Guide, filtering gmail in different inboxes
Hi Since i messed up the last forwarded messages, i try again. Hi Other may fill in and add details or correct. No problem. In my opinion a filter option is a great tool to keep order in our inbox. Noticed that some have 3000 - 4000 emails after 3 days without checking the email. I like many others are using gmail. A very good email client. Accesible. Filtering using Label and filter. You can use the Mail account built in IOS with gmail inside Mail IOS. If you make a new Label or a Map(this is the same i.e..Label is an map in your mailbox list under inbox, sent, deleted etc). If you don't have an gmail account you ca register one first on google.com Don't remember exactly how, but it is pretty straight forward and not dangerous. Chose IMAP if it is an option between IMAP or POP. IMAP synchronize email between iPhone, iPod, Mac and iPad. If you want to use the built in Mail program in IOS you register first on google.com then go to Settings > Mail > add Account. Find gmail in the list.. If memory serves, you only have to set username and password inside the built in IOS MAIL IF you already have signed an account on google.com Making a Label or Map. 1. Log in to gmail. 2. Go to Settings > Label. Settings are in the upper right corner. A window pops up and you find the Label knob.Above the inbox there are also an link called make a filter and after above the inbox. Opening this, the same window opens. 3. Find the text box. Type the name viphone for the Label or Map(it is the same). Hit setup knob. Now you have a Label or Map in your list under Mailbox i.e. inbox, sent, all e-post etc. Make a filter rule. It is easy. Gmail is accessible and straight forward in this case at least. 1. Find the knob Filter in the same window above the table in a list above the table. Hit filter. Now we want to filter viph...@googlegroups.com to go into the Label or Map you made. 2. Find the knob "make a new filter". A new window with a table opens. Set a filter. Make search criteria. 3. Find the text field "from". Do not type anything here - leave this field empty. 4. Tab to "to" field Here you type viph...@googlegroups.com. 5. Tab to subject. Leave this field empty. 6. Tab to "cotain these words". Leave this field empty. 7. Tab to "do not contain". Leave this field empty. 8. Tab to have attachment. Leave this empty. 9. Before you tab to next step, be aware of that the only field you enter any text or mark is in the field "to". Tab to the knob "next step" A new window containing an headline called "make a filter" a table called something lile chose an action or command for this filter. 10. Tab to jump over the inbox. Place a check mark here. Very important. 11. Tab to mark it with a star. Leave this empty. 12. Tab to use the label. Make a check mark here. Very important. 13. Tab once to a know with a drop down list.Find the Label or Map called "viphone and hit it. Important: check that the Label viphone are chosen. 14. Tab to "delete it". Leave this field empty. 15. Tab to "do also use this filter on the conversations below. Leave this field empty. Very important that this field is empty. 16. Tab to "make filter". Finished. Now all the e-post sent to viph...@googlegroups.com will be sent to the label or map called viphone. This Label will reside in the last list under your inbox, sendt e-mail, delete etc. If it do not work, you have entered wrong address i.e. email address, period. It works. If you do exactly as described above. You will receive exactly the same 3000 emails as before, but the will be in the label viphone. You have therefore more space in your inbox for non list emails. You can do these steps for any list or from any sender. You can test the other options and delete those filters which do not works. Let us think about 8000 thousand emails. You can have 4 Labels or Maps containing 2000 in each. And only have 70 emails in your inbox with more private subjects ore none email list post. Shortcut for Sound Preferences and Settings?
Hi, all, I have a Mac Mini, and since it doesn't have a microphone jack, I've been switching back and forth between using my USB headset for system sound when Skype is loaded, and using my headphone jack/speakers. I'm wondering if there's a way to get to these settings quickly so I don't have to open system preferences, then sound. Of course, I could just keep the sounds dialog open, but I'm curious if there might be a way to show this in the status menu volume control settings, or something similar? Re: Is I Tunes broken?
Hi Its working here. Last time, earlier version of iTunes synchronizing did not work. I tested different connections and ended up in the bluetooth section. I changed the name of the mac computer what bluetooth devices will recognize or look for. Its not logical that this bluetooth name should have something to do with usb synchronizing, but i believe it was the last thing i messed with before it started to work last time. inaccessible third party program
All: This is my first time posting to this list but I have very much enjoyed all the postings thus far. I am a new Mac user having left Windows and Jaws. I need to use a third party program for a job function. I installed the program but it gives no Voiceover feedback. Since I am new to this, I don't know if there are things I need to change first before contacting the developer. A sighted person has looked at it with me and based on his feedback, I know the program itself is working properly. So I don't know where to even begin and thought you might give some useful suggestions to try. Re: Shortcut for Sound Preferences and Settings?
Hi Teresa, You can bring up your system sound settings using the keyboard shortcut Fn+Option+F10, or substitute any of the other media keys for controlling sound for F10 (e.g. F11 or F12, where Fn+F11 mutes, Fn+F11 decreases volume, and Fn+F12 increases volume). I'm assuming that your keyboard preferences are set with "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" checked. The general rule is that you can get quick access to the preferences settings menu for a related F-key control by pressing the Option key together with the shortcut combination you'd use. So adding a press of the Option key to any volume-related F-key shortcut will bring up the sound preferences settings menu. Similarly, adding a press of the Option key to any brightness-related F-key shortcut will bring up the display preferences settings menu, which contains a slider for setting brightness. On my 13" MacBook AIr there are controls for raising and lowering the brightness of the backlit keyboard keys with the F5 and F6 keys, so pressing Option+Fn+F5 or F6 will let me bring up the keyboard preferences settings menu. That won't work on laptop models without backlit keyboards, like the 11" MacBook Air, and I don't think it will work with your Mac Mini. Also, if I'm giving instructions to someone who isn't using VoiceOnver the shortcut keys are Option+F10, F11, or F12 (without the Fn key press) to bring up the sound preferences settings menu, and Option+F1 or F2 to bring up the display preferences settings menu. A second tip, if you want to adjust volume or brightness in finer grain increments, hold down the Option+Shift keys as well. So for lowering volume with the media keys, this is Fn+Option+Shift+F11, and for raising the volume this is Fn+Option+Shift+F12. Now, an easier way to switch your audio devices without having to bring up your system sound preferences settings is to get a free app named Audio Switcher. This sits in your status menubar, so you navigate there with either Control+F8 or VO+m+m, and then switch devices from its menu. I'll point you to the MacUpdate page: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26433/audio-switcher You can download from there, but you should also check the link to the developer's web page to read the documentation. For people who remember using SoundSource, a freebie from Rogue Amoeba that worked accessibly up through Leopard to let you switch your audio devices, Audio Switcher is like that. (SoundSource isn't compatible with Mountain Lion). HTH. Re: inaccessible third party program
There is nothing you can do in any settings to get vo to work with an app. If the developer has not set things up correctly, the app won't work, and that's that. Apple makes it easy to figure out if an app will work or not: just try it, as you have. There are no Jaws or review cursors to try, no special modes, no access bridge, none of that, which is quite nice actually. I'd contact the developer and explain what Voiceover is and why you need the program to work with VO. Re: Shortcut for Sound Preferences and Settings?
One thing to remember is that all those amazing controls only work on Apple keyboards. If, like me, you are cheap and didn't spring for the Apple keyboard and have a mini or other mac without a built-in keyboard, you can't access any of this. Yes, bluetooth Apple keyboard. If you use a bluetooth or usb keyboard not made by Apple, you're out of luck. Mine is a $10 keyboard from Wal-Mart that has served me perfectly for over a year, but Apple didn't make it so I don't have the shortcut keys. Hi Esther and Alex, Thanks for the great info. I have a generic standard keyboard with separate buttons for volume and mute. I just tried the option key with this and it brought up my sound preferences. I tried it with the volume buttons and the mute button and all with the option key gave the same result. This is something I probably wouldn't have thought to try if not for both your messages. Thanks much. Teresa On May 22, 2013, at 10:33 AM, Alex Hall wrote: > Yes, bluetooth Apple keyboard. Hi again True there's no settings that you can change to make an application work with voiceover, but since you are a new Mac user, you may not have done everything that you can do to make it work. Ah I am having one of those I hate mac days. Everything was working fine than the mailbox I had moved into my favorites and all of its contents had vanished. I of course recreated it and am now once again having the problem of moving it back into favorites as the method I used before which I believe was the VO shift space bar and then the same on favorites isn't moving it I am in full screen with quick nag off and tried it both ways with VO tacking on and off, am I forgetting a step. inaccessible third party program
All: Thank you for all of the responses. You are correct that in many ways it is actually easier that it either works or it doesn't. It is also possible that some setting is not quite right. The program is one that allows voice communications over the internet. It has a similar function to Skype but is proprietary. I would like to know more about which settings to check. I would also like to know how to direct the developer to make the necessary changes. All help is much appreciated. Re: inaccessible third party program
Hi Jean I personally don't use Skype, but several people on this list do, both on the Mac and on the iPhone. Although I know you will want to use this program instead at work, have you thought about putting Skype on your Mac so that you could check it out Since we know it's accessible? That would give you practice in using a program that for sure is accessible, and it may give you some ideas with this one, especially if you also get in touch with the developer. Even Movie Player on my Vinux system plays it fine, and VLC, though not by any means my prefered player in Linux plays it fine as well. I think even Flip4Mac Pro played it at correct volume. I can't faddum this at all! So here's the situation I'm facing. I have an MP4 video file of Rescue 9 1 1 which I downloaded. due to legality reasons, I'm not gonna reveal from where, but the bottom line is, if I play the file in VLC, I can crank the level way up and get it to almost a comfortable level, but if I bring up the video on either ITunes, Quicktime, Quicklook, or my Apple TV 3rd generation and try playing it, the picture quality is perfectly fine, but the audio level is extremely! and I do mean, extremely! quiet! Even turning off Itune's audio enhancer isn't helping. No, I do not have sound check enabled. It's totally weird! as I can crank it way up in vlc, and it sounds great! but if I put it through Itunes, even turned all the way up, it's only about literally! 35 to 40 percent as loud as it was in VLC. Re: inaccessible third party program
Aple could not make it simpler to add accessibility. If the app is written in something other than Objective-C, you may have a problem, but anything that uses the native Mac APIs and frameworks can easily be made accessible. I don't have links on hand, but a google search for "accessibility programming objective-c" or similar should yield plenty of resources. Re: Shortcut for Sound Preferences and Settings?
The line in jack is the microphone jack. Macs do not support unpowered microphones - you either need a powered one, or a USB sound card to use these. It's annoying, but I read somewhere that the reason has to do with the reliability and sound quality of powered mics - after all, Macs are generally aimed at artists and other people who would appreciate the difference, or at least they used to be. Re: Shortcut for Sound Preferences and Settings?
Hi, Yes. There is a shortcut. Depending on how you have the Function keys set up on your Mac, pressing FN, option F11 or F12 will take you directly into sound preferences. You might not have to add in the FN key, if you have your function keys set up to act as hardware keys. You would just press option F11 or F12. hth Ricardo Walker rica...@appletothecore.info Twitter:@apple2thecore www.appletothecore.info On May 22, 2013, at 8:52 PM, Teresa Cochran wrote: > I have an early 2009 Mac Mini, which only has line-in and headphone jacks > near the top left in the back. > > Thanks, > Teresa > On May 22, 2013, at 4:55 PM, shane christenson wrote: > >> Hi Theresa.
