Google Accessibility

2013-05-18 Thread jshandra72

Hey Listers,

I am asking for your assistance. I have started a petition on Change .Org for
Google Accessibility. I started this petition because Google declared to the
world they were dedicated to Accessibility. However; their actions do not
reflect this statement. Of course browsers and email are accessible. This is a
requirement by law. That's where the dedication ends. I'm including some
examples.

The first example is Google +. If you have ever looked at the app; there are
many links and buttons which aren't clearly labeled. The useability is pretty
much non existent.

For those who have tried an Android device; its not Google that provides the
majority of accessibility. It's 3rd party developers and apps. You could spend
a whole day trying to find an adequate way to get a task done. Of course; this
is because you must find work arounds. I don't know why any blind individual
would choose Android at this point. Its not like Apple software which just
works out of the box.

The last example is the new Hangouts app. It falls into the same category as
Google +. Links and buttons aren't clearly labeled. The useability again is
lacking.

Please take a moment to sign the petition. Tell Google to live up to the
promise of accessibility in their products. More importantly; tell them the
disabled community is not a second -class society.
Thank you for your help!

some questions

2013-05-18 Thread Devin Prater
Hi all. First of all, does anyone know how to simply check the status of a
microphone to see if its actually working without having to start an app? I
have a logitech USB headset microphone, and I think the mic may be broken, but
I'm not sure.
secondly, what is the best youtube client out there for mac? I have like 12 or
so dollars in iTunes so I can spend a little money if necessary.

Re: Google Accessibility

2013-05-18 Thread Pete Nalda
You have very valid points on 1 and 3, but for the sake of being on topic in
this list. Your argument about devices should NOT be mentioned in your
petition. Here, you're preaching to the choir, but publicly, you're starting a
war, and your arguments are weak. We should leave that subject out. Going back
to point #1, Google+ is also not very accessible on iOS devices, and I've
stated that many times, on Google+, by the way. On your petition, you might
also add, that google's search page should be made stretch-zoomable on iOS as
well. If we can strike out the Device parts, I'll gladly sign.

Re: Google Accessibility

2013-05-18 Thread Alex Hall
I think point 2 should stay. It is not device-specific, but rather a general
point that many accessibility features have to be downloaded separately on
Android in general. There is no way to say that without people knowing you are
talking about using Android devices. Perhaps the bit about not knowing why
anyone would choose android should be removed, but other than that I see where
the OP is coming from. I'd sign this, but they want my full street address and
city/state... I'm not sure I want to make that public!

Re: Boot Camp

2013-05-18 Thread Chris Blouch
The other nice thing about VMWare is you don't have to reboot your Mac
into 'windows mode' and reboot again to get back to your mac. VMWare is
just another app you run when you need to do some Windows stuff and then
you quit it. Bootcamp also wants you to partition your hard drive into
Mac and Windows sections which might be confusing for some to figure
out. With VMWare the windows disk drive is simulated through a big file
on your hard drive and it grows only as large as the amount of stuff you
store on windows. So that file will still be many GB of space, but you
don't have to guess ahead of time like when you partition.

is Vmware Fusion can fully automate the installation using its own

Re: Boot Camp

2013-05-18 Thread Kliphton
Another feature I like with vmware that is often overlooked, is copy and
pasting between the 2 devices. You can put something on your clip board on the
windows side, and paste it to the mac side, and the same goes for the mac side,
you can copy somethig to the mac clip board, and paste it in windows.

Re: Google Accessibility

2013-05-18 Thread Michael Babcock
At least there is accessibility on android, and you don't have to pay $1200 to
receive accessibility on android. I think number two should be removed
personally, unless you plan to go soon Microsoft, Gateway, Dell,
Hewlett-Packard, etc. because they don't include accessibility features in
their operating system that is preinstalled. If someone asked me which mobile
phone platform I would suggest for a blind or visually impaired users, my
response would be "if you wanted to work, right out-of-the-box choose iOS. If
you want something to tinker with, choosing android". They both have
accessibility, and, I think a lot of blind or visually impaired individuals get
frustrated with android, because it is a learning curve. So, again I personally
think number two is inappropriate for this particular situation. In addition,
there are alternatives to Google hangout, why is Google responsible for being
100% accessible? When other companies are not 100% accessible, and 95% of the
features can be accessed. And again, as obvious that Google hangouts isn't 100%
accessible on iOS, it is apparent that iOS in that sense is no better than
android because from what I remember, Google plus was actually usable on
android.

Re: Google Accessibility

2013-05-18 Thread Karen Lewellen
Actually, given how much access is an individual thing, why is 100% the
measure for anyone? What you think is accessible not not apply to
another person even if they have the same label. People choose the
device that works for them. Some
want a touch screen, some want keys like those with a blackberry device.
there are many reasons why a person uniquely scoring differently on an
eye test will choose an android device.
Honestly, I keep wondering why companies like cell phone providers are not
required to include the third party software on the device, if they
publicly represent the device as accessible as a part of their marketing
/ sales effort. it is like putting something on the menu but not serving
the food.

Back to google.
Personally? and I have been on the accessibility list of theirs for some
time now, I think google is simply confused.
First, they are building based on stereotypes and generalizations, not the
reality of how differently people use tools. This is not their fault, the
generalization starts with others who benefit from thinking all those
with the label of blindness or any other disability are just the same.
They might not even consider ios because someone is telling them no one
uses them...or they find one individual with the blindness label and think
hey it works for them it works for all!
Second, they have decided in advance that accessibility is hard, kept simple
it is not.
third, and this applies to any company, you are not making it financially
worth their while.
There are people from all professional backgrounds who experience
disabilities. Accessibility BTW applies to more than those experiencing
sight loss.
However no one, say no institution where disabilities studies is a program
, or any consumer organization
has bothered to gather the market numbers.

even if one lives on some form of social assistance, it is still money.
Is it not time to treat this like a paying market of customers instead of a
feel good or legal mandate?

I mean even the federal government is far from 100% accessible.
Hey apple is making tons of money including access as a seamless aspect of
their products, prove to other companies they can make money and it might
just be a simple sell.

If all the songs in the playlist are mp3 then when you go to burn the CD
it will ask if you want an Audio CD or MP3 CD. So if you have m4a files
you'll need to convert those to mp3 first. If you don't have the Import
Settings in Preferences set to MP3 you'll need to go there and make your
choices for bitrate and stuff. After that you can pick all your m4a
files and then choose Create New Version from the file menu and then
pick Create MP3 Version. Then with all the mp3s in a playlist you should
be ready to make your mp3 CD.

Switching to VMWare from bootcamp

2013-05-18 Thread Phil Halton
I assume the first things to do for the switch is to
1) de-authorize any software licenses on the windows bootcamp side, like jaws,
MS-Office etc. Also to save any data I want to keep.

2) from the Mac side, eliminate the bootcamp partition via the bootcamp utility

3) purchase and install VMWare latest and greatest and read up on its operation
and use.

I'm hoping that the single license retail copy of windows7 I used for the
bootcamp installation, which I eliminated, will now transfer over and authorize
the copy of windows in VMWare. That is, will microsoft have a fit thinking that
I'm somehow trying to use a single license on more than one installation?

Is there anything I have to do to de-authorize windows7 before wiping the
partition so that it'll be usable in VMWare?

I tried using a trial version a while back and had problems, and ditched it
without giving it a fair shake. But, I know people are using it with great
success and I expect I'll be able to work out any problems as well with the
help of the list.

Actually there is a way in Vmware to either import the bootcamp
partition and create a virtual machine out of it, or create a virtual
machine which boots directly to the Bootcamp partition. In my guide on
setting up Bootcamp without sighted assistance at

I show you how to import the bootcamp partition and create a virtual

Actually, fusion will allow you to use your boot camp copy of windows in a
virtual machine, so you may not have to go through all of that, however,
creating a new virtual machine will offer you a few advantages. It's one file,
so it's very easy to back up. If something happens to your copy of windows,
just restore a backed up version. Not sure about the authorization for windows,
but if it's been more than 4 months since you activated it in boot camp, I
think it will work, not totally sure though. I use fusion here and it works
well.

Dragging and Dropping a mailbox to Favorites

2013-05-18 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

I know that has been covered before, and I have read what I could
find, but have had no luck. I am trying to drag and drop a mailbox
into my favorites in mac mail. I have tried using the keyboard keys VO
comma, and have of course gotten the mailbox may be hidden message. I
tried doing a command option H to hide everything, doesn't work and
have even tried using the trackpad and setting the mark and move
command with a command flick right and still get the cannot move
mailbox as it is blocked by something that is hidden. Does anyone know
how I might be able to solve this as I have seen that some people have
been able to move mailboxes to their favorite bar. Thanks.

to the google labs enable page (and standard view html is useless on safari
with voiceover). anyone happen to have a solution that works?

also, anyone happen to have access to a contact page specifically for
accessibility issues with google products?

Re: using keyboard

2013-05-18 Thread Chris Blouch
When you say 'regular' do you mean a USB keyboard or a regular
bluetooth? I haven't tried it but there were lots of messages on this
list talking about hooking bluetooth keyboards to iOS devices. There is
no USB port on iOS devices but that's not to say somebody hasn't come up
with some kind of dongle which will allow you to do that. Probably not
worth the cost compared to just getting a bluetooth keyboard.

Hi Jurgen,

Well, I suppose that's a good thing. At least it means it's not a software
issue. it's funny, I've seen others post about this before, but I've never had
the issue till these last few weeks. I can't figure out what would be causing
it, since it wasn't timed to an upgrade or anything.

Re: Anyone else having "mail busy" issues when they wake their Mac up?

2013-05-18 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I'm not 100% sure of this but, if your using iMap, could you be getting the VO
busy because, Mail is trying to load a ton of messages? Especially if its
adding your all messages folder. Boy how I had that folder by the way. haha.

Hi,

How about drag and drop the old fashioned way? I just tried that, and it
worked for me. This is done with VO command shift spacebar.

Re: Anyone else having "mail busy" issues when they wake their Mac up?

2013-05-18 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Ricardo,

I am using IMAP, and you could certainly be right, though I can't imagine that
it's trying to load any more messages now than it was three weeks ago.

You know, this is the first time that I've looked at the Archive folder. How
on earth does stuff end up there, anyway. When I look at the list of messages,
I see no rhyme or reason behind what is stored there and what isn't. Anyway,
it's got 900+ messages in it, so maybe I'll try deleting some of them and see
if that helps.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Dragging and Dropping a mailbox to Favorites

2013-05-18 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Ricardo,

Still no luck here. Just to make sure I am doing this properly. I went to the
mailbox I want to put into favorites. I clicked VO command shift spacebar. VO
says mouse down on, then I hear the scratching noise as if the mailbox is being
dragged. Then I tried both going to the favorites bar and also interacting with
in it and pressing VO command shift space bar, but can't seem to get the
mailbox into favorites. Where exactly are you dropping the mailbox in the
favorites bar? Thanks

Re: Dragging and Dropping a mailbox to Favorites

2013-05-18 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

first, I interact with the mailbox list, find the mailbox I want, and press VO
command shift spacebar. Then, I navigate to the favorites bar but, I didn't
interact with it. I dropped it right there with VO shift command spacebar again.

Mail on the MacBook Air

2013-05-18 Thread Katey Glass
Hello all,

I'm fairly new to the Mac and am having a hard time reading threaded
conversations in email. I'm not sure how to open the threaded message. If I
get a single message I can do a VO J and get to the message content, I can do
this on a threaded message as well, but, don't know how to get from one
conversation to the next.

I know this is probably a very basic question, but I'd greatly appreciate your
help.

Many thanks,

2013-05-18 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Ricardo,

Hilarious, I was going to email that I was doing exactly what you said and it
wasn't working, and then I said let me try one more thing. I turned cursor
tracking off, and amazingly for some reason that worked. Of course, don't ask
me to try that again, but I got the mailbox into my favorites that I wanted so
I could use a command 5 to get to it, and it worked. Thanks so much for all the
help and suggestions. Not sure why the cursor tracking was affecting it.

Hi Jürgen,

This is odd because it works perfectly for me. I'm sure we must be able to get
it to work for you too.

For me, the best way to get mailboxes from my mailbox list into the favourites
bar is to use the VO-Period and VO-SHIFT-Period commands.

Are you able to describe the steps you've tried and where you have problems? If
you here that something may be hidden or blocked, have you tried pressing the
VO-SHIFT-F2 command to bring the window to the front?

Cheers

Hi Katey,

When you're on the threaded conversation in the messages list, press Command-O
to open the message. To move to another message in that conversation, press
VO-SHIFT-UP ARROW to stop interacting, then move left or right with VO-Left or
VO-Right until you get to the other message you want to read, then interact
with VO-SHIFT-DOWN ARROW.

Best,

You can also keep quick nav off, and choose to expand/collapse conversations
with left and right arrow, respectively.
then you just vo+J to read the message text, vo+J to the message list, and up
or down to go through the conversation as necessary.
Good luck!
