Chris,
Command enter is perfect. This works really well. Thanks so much. I don't know
how one finds out about all these great keyboard shortcuts. I suspect that's a
mac one, not a VO one. Thanks anyway.

emulating control click

2013-03-26 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux
Hi all,

I'm digging into file maker pro for my information systems course, and wanted
to know if anyone here can emulate a control mouse click?

It seems fairly straight forward, but it's not.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello all
you do not need to label graphics on the mac at all. There is a custom
labels feature but this is for web elements or other controls whose
label is not accessible or even present according to Vo.

Hi there
Basically, you should be okay now. The only thing you need now is to
get your end email:. I found it to be a pretty easy process.
You might try this. Press command and thespacebar. You should hear
voiceover say spotlight. Type in mail. Press enter. You will probably
get the message about setting it up. I can't remember exactly what
from there but I think you can follow the prompts. If you get into
trouble type command q to quit in any Macintosh program.

Re: emulating control click

2013-03-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Yuma,

What do you mean by emulating a Control-Click? You can do a Control-Click by
bringing the mouse to where you want to do this and holding down the Control
key while clicking with trackpad or mouse. Also, VO-Shift-m should do the same
thing but doesn't always work.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi again the Anita
Spotlight is a search program that searches your computer and you can she's
just search the web as well. It is very fast, and I have found it faster then
searching in windows. To get there, you press command space and the. Then type
in the word or phrase you want search for on your computer. It can be a
filename or text in there.

Re: Wireless Keyboards.

2013-03-26 Thread Chris Blouch
Main problem I've had with using Windows keyboards on the Mac has not
been connecting them but that the option and command keys get flipped.
Normally from left to right on laptops it is function, control, option
(alt), command but on windows keyboards they probably won't have the
Function key and the command/option keys switch places. I think there is
a way to remap those keys so the go back to their normal places but I
eventually got tired of it and went with an Apple keyboard. To be clear,
non-laptop Apple keyboards also lack the function key since that is
usually for doing things like change the speaker volume or dim the
screen. Speaking of which, you can get a lot more battery life out of
your laptop if you turn the brightness all the way down by hitting F1
about 16 times.

Yes there is a way to remap them if this is the case. Go to System properties

There is a button called modifier keys press that and under the command and

Hi there!
One that might be effected is when you open iTunes and hold the right option
key down that would give you the window to choose which library you would like
to use!
That also was a problem setting up a commander for iTunes with just the right
option key!
Sometimes when you went to open iTunes with your shortcut the choose library
window would open!
Instead of iTunes itself!

There are some uses as have been mentioned but at least in my case they are so
rare that I have keyboard commander set for both option keys and if I require

This suits me but won't be suitable for some people as we all have different

windows keyboards they probably won't have the Function key and the

It's next to the USB ports on a Mac Book Pro to the left of them if you

GarageBand help with recording more than one track with software instruments

2013-03-26 Thread Jessica Carter
> Hi All,
Recording one track goes well, but when adding another track, somehow the first
track ends up being accidentally recorded over.
I hit new track, and give it a name. Then I go into the browser and pick an
instrument.
Then go over to the layout area and interact with the tracks. Find the one to
work on, and stop interacting with the tracks.
i must be leaving out a step or not doing something correctly, because the same
thing keeps happening, with the previous track being recorded over.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Have a good one, all.

Help with RSS and Twitter feeds

2013-03-26 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

It seems Twitter can't leave well enough alone, and I am surprised I
can't find the answer by searching for it. It seems my RSS Google
Reader stopped loading my Twitter feeds on March 21. This happened
once before as Twitter changed it's API and I had to go through and
resubscribe to the feeds through my RSS reader. I wanted to see if
anyone else found the solution and the new URL that you need to use to
get certain Twitter feeds in an RSS reader. Thanks

On a related note I heard that Google is killing Google Reader. Got to
love Google killing the one thing I use of theirs besides Gamil. Has
anyone found an accessible RSS subscription service to use in place of
Google Reader? Thanks

Re: Transfering Files.

2013-03-26 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

An SD card or a USB drive, or external drive -- any of these are without doubt
the easiest way. Since e-mail is usually either through Pop3 or, more common
these days by Imap, the e-mails are carried over in most cases. I had all of
my documents, etc. backed up to a thumb drive (also called a USB drive) and SD
card, so all I had to do was copy them over, and it was really very easy. The
msot difficult part way installing VMWare Fusion to run Windows and the
programs associated with the Windows side, which you probably won't have to
worry about.

Thanks,

Harry

Re: Getting Started.

Hello,

The one feature I have often seen in Windows clients and is not present in
Mail, although I dearly wish it were ,is the ability to schedule a message to
send later. This is useful if you are up at eight at night, three in the
morning, etc. and want to have an e-mail schedule to send at 8:30 a.m., or have
an e-mail send to someone when you know they will be in their office and likely
to see it, etc.

Thanks,

Re: GarageBand help with recording more than one track with software instruments

2013-03-26 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hello,

It is not necessary to interact with the arrange layout area. You can just use
the up/down arrows to move from track to track. Most of the time, Voiceover
will not announce what track you are on. I guess if you have like 25 tracks,
this could be an issue but, I have found that most people using Garageband
don't have that many tracks in a given project. Honestly, I hardly ever
interact with the arrange layout area unless I need to manipulate a region, or,
adjust panning or volume level for a track. If you haven't recorded anything
on the track yet, you can just play the instrument to make sure your on the
correct track. or, solo the track with the letter S to see what has been
recorded on the track so far.

Night Owl Twitter Client Keyboard Shortcut Help

Hey all,

Sorry if this has been covered. I just notice Night Owl, pardon my
spelling Yourufiroo changed all of the keyboard shortcuts, so strange
as now I have to turn the caps lock on to use any of them. Is there
any way around this or a way to set your own defaults? I looked in the
preferences and couldn't find anything and tried setting one of my own
shortcuts in system information for the program but that didn't work
either. Anyone figure anything out? Thanks

Re: emulating control click

2013-03-26 Thread Chris Gilland
Ann,

the issue is, if you don't have a stationary mouse, like a trackpad, or a
magic/mighty mouse etc, the issue is when you go to put your hand on the mouse,
to then click it, just the ever so slightest of movement, could accidentally
take you off the item you need to control click. Frankly, it sounds like I'm
making it harder than I really am, but trust me. Try it. You'll see it
becomes extremely annoying trying to keep the thing totally still while
clicking.

Again though, as I said, if you have a full keyboard with a numpad, then let me
know, as I may have a perfectly ideal sollution.

Chris.

  Hello Yuma,

What do you mean by emulating a Control-Click? You can do a Control-Click by
bringing the mouse to where you want to do this and holding down the Control
key while clicking with trackpad or mouse. Also, VO-Shift-m should do the same
thing but doesn't always work.

  Cheers,

  Anne

Re: Keyboard Commander

2013-03-26 Thread Mark Baxter
I might just add here that simple F8 (or Function F8, depending) will open
Itunes, so there should not need to be a reason to use up a shortcut key on it
with Commander, and that would also obviate the library opening confusion.

elypsis is 3 periods back to back.

So, dot dot dot, hope that answers your question. Hint, that dot dot dot

I hope this does not sound too elementary. On both my mac & ios devices, I
hear voiceover say elypsis. What does it mean? Is there any way to turn it

Hi there!
One that might be effected is when you open iTunes and hold the right
option key down that would give you the window to choose which library
you would like to use!
That also was a problem setting up a commander for iTunes with just the
right option key!
Sometimes when you went to open iTunes with your shortcut the choose
library window would open!

Instead of iTunes itself!

Hello Pam,

When a menu item ends with an ellipsis, it means that by selecting that
option, a dialogue box will open. So it is in fact informative.

Sorry if this has been covered. I just notice Night Owl, pardon my

as now I have to turn the caps lock on to use any of them. Is there
any way around this or a way to set your own defaults? I looked in the

shortcuts in system information for the program but that didn't work

RE: Thunderbolt.

2013-03-26 Thread Jesus Garcia
It is a small square looking port, if your mac book pro is anything like
mine it will be on the left side of the machine moving from front to back
you will have an external jack for headphones or for external speakers, I
also think you may have an external microphone jack then you will have the
SD card slot, followed by two USB ports then followed by the thunder bolt
port.

There is also the Migration Assistant that is found within the Utilities folder

  Hi Anita
I had to get my extra memory separate. Admittedly, I did this about a year
after I had my map, but I upgraded my MacBook Pro so that I had 8 GB. I found
that my cat numbers program works better now That I did that. I was told that
the only time Apple puts in the memory is if you buy your computer on line and
you get it at the same time. I had to go to Micro Center and have the memory
installed. I also bought a Variz well.

Is upgradeable memory a standard option, or does it need to be a separate

Mailing Labels Suggestions.

2013-03-26 Thread Emilio Hernandez
Hello everyone,

I find that the standard 10 X 1/2 envelope margins need to be adjusted because
the sent from address is roughly an inch low.
This got me thinking…so I am curious what mailing labels are users enjoying
when printing out address labels?
This would need to be something I could use for both address sections of the
envelope because I have some cases where the non-standard 9 x 1/2 by 11 manilla
envelopes will not fit into my label feed.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Re: Link Question.

Hi,

VO-u brings up the Web Router. Use your left and right arrows to access the
various web elements including links. Once you're in the category you wish,
such as Links, you can either arrow up and down the list or enter the first
couple letters of the link you wish to go to. If you have narrowed the list
too far, simply press the Delete/Back Space key to bring the list back to its
full size. Press return and you'll jump to the link you've chosen.

Re: emulating control click

2013-03-26 Thread Esther
Hello Yuma,

Just to add to Anne's comments, Control-Click should always work, while the
software emulation of VO-Shift-m sometimes may not. The only issue you might
run into with Control-Click is if your mouse cursor is not focused in the
correct location. For example, I can point you to some examples of web pages
where the designers have misused the HTML coding to arrange the visual
placement of links. (When you query the size of the VoiceOver cursor, it takes
up a quarter or a third of the width of the web page, even though it's meant to
focus on one or two words, so apart from failing tests of being properly coded,
using VoiceOver to move to the link and Control-Click or VO-Shift-m doesn't
work because you're nowhere near the actual link.)

Similarly, clicking with the trackpad or mouse should always work for "click",
while occasionally emulated clicks with VO-Shift-space do not. Using the mouse
keys equivalent (where you click by pressing the "5" on the numeric keypad or
the "i" key on the embedded numeric keypad position for a laptop) should also
always work as a click. (Of course, turning mouse keys on is a solution for
difficulties in using the keyboard or trackpad, and is separate from your
VoiceOver options.)

HTH. Cheers,
Esther

Main problem I've had with using Windows keyboards on the Mac has
not been connecting them but that the option and command keys get
flipped. Normally from left to right on laptops it is function,
control, option (alt), command but on windows keyboards they
probably won't have the Function key and the command/option keys
switch places. I think there is a way to remap those keys so the
go back to their normal places but I eventually got tired of it
and went with an Apple keyboard. To be clear, non-laptop Apple
keyboards also lack the function key since that is usually for
doing things like change the speaker volume or dim the screen.
Speaking of which, you can get a lot more battery life out of your
laptop if you turn the brightness all the way down by hitting F1
about 16 times.

Re: Elypsis

2013-03-26 Thread Chris Blouch
I think it's more like "continues." If I were quoting some speech I
might have "Four score and seven years ago…" with the ellipsis to let
you know there is more. Likewise a menubar item like "Preferences…" has
the ellipsis to let you know that you're not going to get immediate
action because there is more interaction to be presented in a dialog.

When a menu item ends with an ellipsis, it means that by selecting that option,
a dialogue box will open. So it is in fact informative.

Re: Elypsis

2013-03-26 Thread Esther
Hi,

In writing, an ellipsis is used as an "an intentional omission". The
detailed text can be omitted either for reasons similar to the one Pam
gives, where the writer doesn't want to go on listing details, or
because the content of the quoted text is familiar, and the writer
doesn't want to quote it in its entirety, such as CB's example in
giving the opening words of the Gettysburg address. It can have the
sense that Chris uses, of there being more content that follows (which
for reasons of length are not described). In written essays,
articles, or reviews, you might use an ellipsis where you're quoting a
source, but are omitting parts that are secondary to the main point
being made.

You can't turn this feature off in VoiceOver, because it's giving you
information that is part of the menu options, but you can always press
the Control key to keep VoiceOver from announcing the whole phrase.

converting system report files

2013-03-26 Thread Tammy
Hi,

Is there a way to save a system report file as something other then the spx
file that it defaults to? I’m trying to save it as an html file, but when I
changed the extention it gave me a message about how I can’t save it that way.
But windows won’t read the file at all.

Thanks,

Tammy

Re: Opening Web Sites.

2013-03-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
Anita,

I suggest that you take some time with the Keyboard Practice option within
VoiceOver. Press VO-k to start Keyboard Help then press the various keys
around the keyboard and VO will announce what key you've pressed. This will
tell you where things like the cmd (command) key are, the Option key, other
modifiers as well as function keys. In fact, Keyboard Help can also assist you
with becoming familiar with some basic VoiceOver commands. If you hold down
the VO keys (Control and Option) then press, for example, the letter "l", Vo
will announce "Read by Line". Therefore, you can learn that VO-l will read the
text one line at a time. Press other keys while the VO keys are down to learn
their functions as well. Press ESC (Escape) to get out of Keyboard Help.

Another thing to note that may help you some, is that the cmd (command) key or
the combination of command and option keys are used primarily within the MacOS
as keyboard shortcuts and really have nothing to do with VO. Any sighted user
can use these same key combinations to perform the desired action whether VO is
on or off.

HTH.

Re: Night Owl Twitter Client Keyboard Shortcut Help

2013-03-26 Thread Brian Fischler
I believe the dev changed it in the latest update, unless I some how
did something I am not aware of. For example it used to be to compose
a new tweet you just hit command N now it is command capital N, so if
you hit command N with the caps lock off nothing will happen even if
you try command shift N nothing happens you have to have caps lock on
and hit command N to compose the tweet. Maybe I did something by
accident as I figured the boards would be all over this change. Any
help is greatly appreciated

Re: The Rotor Option.

2013-03-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

You must have the TrackPad commander active to access the Rotor controls. Try
turning it on by holding down the VO keys then twisting clockwise (to the
right) with two fingers on your Trackpad. Holding down the VO keys and
twisting counter-clockwise (to the left) will turn the Trackpad commander off.
When the Trackpad Commander is active, do a two finger twist clockwise to
activate the Rotor then swipe up or down with one finger to change controls
just like within iOS.

Hey, I just deleted the program and reinstalled it so now it is

capital letters and the menu was even reading them that way, not sure
what I did but everything is working fine now.

Re: The Rotor Option.

2013-03-26 Thread Anne Robertson
The rotor option is also available in Quick Nav. Just press the left and up
arrows together or the right and up arrows and with every press, you'll get
another option for controlling the function of the up and down arrows. These
options vary according to the situation. So, in a text document, you'll have
the text navigation options such as word, sentence, paragraph, etc. In Safari,
you'll have links, headings, form controls, etc.

Cheers,

Anne
