questions about nvalt v2.1

2013-03-15 Thread William Windels
Hello,
I have some questions about nvalt 2.1.

It's interesting for me since you can very easily write notes and find them
back and, you can make a link in files to other files you have made with nvalt.

It seems very accessible and there are a lot off hotkeys but , voiceover is
doing strange.

Going to the beginning or end of a line with quicknav off and
command+left/right arrow, seems not to work as expected.
It seems not always to work for activation a link. I happens when I press the
internal link, I am editing the link.

Next to this 2 frustrating bugs, the program seems accessible..

Any comments about this bugs, workarounds or other possibilities are very
welcome.

Kind regards,
William Windels

Re: Opinion on the Focus Blue and any other display.

2013-03-15 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Kawal,

I use the Focus 40 Blue, and I'm quite satisfied with it.

Every Braille display and notetaker I've had I've cleaned myself, using an
alcohol wipe or a microfiber cloth with alcohol.

Re: Mail messages are in folder, but the text is not being read

2013-03-15 Thread Christopher Kchao
Can you be more specific in terms of what feedback you're actually getting from
VO? Upon hitting return on a message, there should be a "message content" table
that you're already interacting with, and pressing VO + right arrow should get
you to the intended text. It's a bit difficult to direct you without knowing
what voiceover is doing in favor of what you actually want.

Voiceover is simply saying text, and then the message is empty. Somebody sided
also said that the information is not appearing on the screen. It appears to be
there, but nothing is showing.

Re: Mail messages are in folder, but the text is not being read

2013-03-15 Thread Esther
Hi Christine,

You probably need to rebuild one or more mailboxes. The best source
of information about this kind of problem, and a host of other tips
for working efficiently in mail, is the "Take Control of Apple Mail in
Mountain Lion" guide by Joe Kissell, which I strongly recommend
buying:
http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/mountain-lion-apple-mail

Here's the relevant section from the book:

Fix Mailbox Problems
Most of the time, Mail works as you expect it to, correctly displaying
all the messages you’ve filed in any mailbox when you select that
mailbox. If your mailboxes begin misbehaving, though—not showing
messages you know they contain or taking an extremely long time to
show their contents, for example, you can try some easy tricks to fix
them.
If your envelope index—a special database that Mail uses to track
which messages are in which mailboxes—and the other files that Mail
uses to catalog messages become severely damaged, Mail may exhibit any
of several symptoms, including:
• Missing messages
• Incorrect message counts, in which the number of unread messages
shown next to the mailbox name in the sidebar differs from the number
of unread messages you see inside the mailbox
• An empty mailbox, even though you know it contains messages
• Failure to move messages into a mailbox (manually or using rules)
135
• Incorrect or missing results when searching by message headers
(From, To, or Subject)
If you suspect that a mailbox contains errors, the standard cure-all
is to rebuild it. To do this, select the mailbox (or more than one)
and choose Mailbox > Rebuild.
If that doesn’t solve the problem, quit Mail, navigate to ~/Library/
Mail/V2/MailData and drag the files Envelope Index, Envelope Index-
shm, and Envelope Index-wal to the Trash. When you launch Mail again,
it’ll tell you that you need to “reimport” all your messages (just as
it may have done when you upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion). Let it
do so—it’s recreating your envelope index from scratch, but don’t
worry, you won’t lose any data, such as labels or message status—and
when it finishes, your mailboxes should behave correctly.

I would also make sure that I had a complete current backup of all
relevant mail library files, which the book also describes, and which
includes
• ~/Library/Mail: This folder contains all your mailboxes, rules, junk
mail settings, and most of the other data Mail uses.
• ~/Library/Keychains: This folder contains all your keychains, which
store your usernames and passwords.
• ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook: This folder contains your
Contacts entries and your Previous Recipients list.
• ~/Library/Preferences: This folder contains your preference files,
among which is the one Mail uses.

Alternatively, you can reference the Apple Knowledge Base support
document on Rebuilding Mailboxes for Mountain Lion:
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11811

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Opinion on the Focus Blue and any other display.

2013-03-15 Thread Traci
Hello,

I've been using the Focus 14 blue for a few Months now. This is my 1st braille
display experience, and so far I quite enjoy it.

I like the way the keys are laid out. Dots 7-1 on the left, dots 4-8 on the
right. They are set is in a fan shape, very comfortable to type on. The
spacebar is just below the 14 braille cells, good placement for your thumb. On
the front edge of the display, just in front of the spacebar are 2 shift
buttons, again quite handy for your thumbs.

There are several more buttons than what I have gone into. :)

Interesting descussion on cleaning the braille cells. Using a bit of alcohol
is safe?

I understand you have to use the right kind of alcohol. You need I understand,
isopropyl alcohol at 90% or higher. You don't want to much water in it. You can
get it in grocery stores.

And, you must insure that you use very small amounts, with a soft cloth that

Cannot get MacBook Pro out of recovery mode, and that may be the least of my problems ...

2013-03-15 Thread Jessica Carter
Hi all,
Accidentally got MacBook Pro into safe mode. Then I was able to put it into
recovery mode, but it will not boot up from either the cd or the hard drive
partition where the recovery disk is.
I have run the verify disk and verify disk permissions. It's odd, because the
message that comes back is that everything is ok, but something is definitely
wrong. After not being able to start up from either the dvd or partition, a
repair disk permissions and repair disk was run.

I have thought about reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling everything.
But that would be a last resort option, as I have a lot of music and GarageBand
stuff on the Mac.
Oddly enough, I was going to backup everything, but this mess happened before
the backup could take place. :(
Any help with thiss issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Re: Cannot get MacBook Pro out of recovery mode, and that may be the least of my problems ...

2013-03-15 Thread Georgina Joyce

Hello Jessica,

I'm no expert on Mac's but I've played around with GNU Linux a lot. I
don't understand what you mean that the DVD doesn't work. Can you boot
from the DVD drive? Or is your DVD disk damaged and the machine can't
read it. If you have the option of booting from a USB or DVD drive. I'd
grab myself a copy of GRML or other talking GNU LINux distro. Then grab
a external drive. Boot into talking Linux then mount the external drive
and copy all files or image your Macbook drive. Then see about
formatting and starting again.

That's the independent way. But here in the UK, we have the genius bar
which I'd make an appointment and ask the experts what your options were.

Is it an older machine?
What version of OS X is it?
Are there any known hardware issues?
What may have caused this problem?

Good luck.

Gena

using bootcamp inside win7 to restart the mac

2013-03-15 Thread William Windels
Hello,

Are there some tricks to set osx as boot disc for the next time from inside
win7?
I have win7 installed with bootcamp and osx 10.8.
On windows I can use nvda or window eyes8.

With the option bootdisc in osx, I can easily setup the bootcamp partition to
load after reboot. But, when I want to reboot in mac after using win7, It seems
more difficult. In the start menu of win7, I type bootcamp and can find a
couple of things but not the possibility to reboot directly in mac.

My workaround for now is to shutdown win7 by pressing alt+f4 until I have the
restart option.
Then , when The mac reboots, I press command+r to boot in recovery-mode and
there I can change again the boot disc.

But, this seems a unnecessary long way to me.

thx for your help,
Kind regards,

So try that.

Cannot get MacBook Pro out of recover mode ...

2013-03-15 Thread Jessica Carter
> Hi Georgina,
Whoa, Linux? Never played around with that, but maybe will give it a go
sometime. I have heard lots of good things about it.
What I ended up doing was creating a copy of everything on an external hard
drive, and then reinstalled Leopard on the Mac. Currently Mountain Lion is
downloading, and if the migration assistant works, I will use that to reload
everything back onto the Mac.
Never had to do this before, and it was kind of scary. A friend helped out, as
I did not know where to start.

For some reason the DVD drive was not reading the disk, and that's why I
installed OsX on the external hard drive.

The computer is about 3.5 years old, running 10.8.2. There does not seem to be
any hardware issues regarding this matter, except for getting the computer into
safe mode, and putting it into recovery mode, after that.

Have a good one.

Re: Reverse Panning, Was Opinion on the Focus Blue and any other display.

2013-03-15 Thread Teresa Cochran
Actually, if you go into VO utility with VO-f8, then go to the Braille section,
select the layout tab. Press the assign commands button, and there you will be
able to reverse panning. I reversed it long ago, and really like it, although
occasionally I've considered changing it again, since the iOS thingies don't
support reverse panning, and I am constantly pressing wrong buttons going back
and forth between computer and iThingie. :)

Re: Cannot get MacBook Pro out of recovery mode, and that may be the least of my problems ...

2013-03-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I understand from another message that you have already began reformatting and
reinstalling your HD so this may be moot. When in Recovery mode, did you
attempt to Quit the Recovery app? When you do this, it should ask you to pick
a Startup Disk. If your Startup Disk is fine, it will show up as an available
Startup system from which you can simply select it then press the Restart
button. If your HD does not show up as a valid Startup Disk, then it may be
that it has lost its blessing. The blessing process tells the computer which
System folder on your Mac has all the proper requirements to allow for booting.
One thing to try in this situation is to go up to the Utilities menu when in
Recovery mode, choose Terminal from that menu then enter the following in the
Terminal window:

sudo bless -folder /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/CoreServices -setOF

Press return then you'll need to enter your Admin password. Quit Terminal then
Quit the Recovery app and see if your Macintosh HD is now available as a
Startup Disk. If so, life is good and your computer should start up normally.
If you still have problems, something more drastic has occurred and you may
need to either re-install and migrate or restore from a backup.

HTH.

Re: Opinion on the Focus Blue and any other display.

2013-03-15 Thread erik burggraaf
you can make your own reverse panning you know?

Just go into the braille hotkeys and switch the two panning buttons and their
functions. if you need to switch between standard and reverse panning, it's a
bit clunky, but you could save the configuration files one for standard and one
for reverse and then just load the one you need at any particular time.

For that matter, you can do this with any braille display not only the focus.
All the reverse panning feature really is is a shortcut to the actual settings
to do it in jaws come to that. There's no magic involved.

Re: Opinion on the Focus Blue and any other display.

2013-03-15 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Erik,

OK, I've had a couple of glasses of wine, so apologies in advance if I'm being
dense.

I'm currently working with an Alva, and want to change the behavior of some of
the panning keys when using it with an i-device. Is this possible?
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Opinion on the Focus Blue and any other display.

2013-03-15 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello.

Thank you everyone for responding to my questions. I have some more.

If one wants to clean the cells on the display, is there something you have to
lift to get at lifting the cells up to clean? I am no expert on alcohol as I've
never so much poured any in a glass as I do not drink so does anyone know if
you can get any kind of solution (like you can get to clean your LED screen
with)? so that you spray it on the cloth to clean? Also, how long does the
battery last if you use constantly? I am very much decided on getting the
Focus Blue now, thanks to all you great people. I like these lists very much
and appreciate everyone's opinions.

Kawal.

Yeah you can. Go into the more options menu beside the search for stations

controls for headphones and other output types. Interact with whatever slider
