Hi,

Just to add, you might have to use the FN key plus shift F10 to bring up the

Either that or do what I had to do, and download Sharp keys... just google
for it... and install that on the Windows side, then assign a hotkey mapping
the application's key to something else. I'd never be without sharp keys on
my windows setup on the mac!

Possibility of File Transporter voiceover Accessible?

2013-02-12 Thread Emilio Hernandez
Hello everyone,

Lately some buzz in the mac ecosystem is about File Transporter, which is a
personal cloud storage system.
This sounds very interested and the price seems fair-enough for the product.
My question is because of the moderately priced product what is the likelihood
that the software being voiceover compatible?

Welcome any feedback or thoughts about this topic.

Re: Possibility of File Transporter voiceover Accessible?

2013-02-12 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

in my experience, the price of an app is no indicator of accessibility at all.
I've bought apps for a buck that worked wonderfully with Voiceover, and apps
for $30 that were completely inaccessible. I recommend getting in contact with
the developers if possible and asking if there is a demo or, if it would be
possible for you to even test the service/app and report your findings to them
in regards to accessibility.

Accessible means to fill out forms on the mac

2013-02-12 Thread ppowells09
Hi folks,
I receive forms from my state periodically to re- determine my eligibility for
state funds. Does anyone know of an accessible means to reliably fill out the
paperwork on the computer, printed, and sign it? I can print it, I can sign it.
However filling out the forms is a major issue. I cannot read snail mail. To
my knowledge, Microsoft office, is not accessible on the Mac. Not sure if their
version of PDF, will work with the forms. Please help?

Hi Pam
I have some unfortunate news here. This issue of editing good old PDF forms is
an issue we have talked about before and will no doubt talk again until it is
resolved. Unless you put Windows on your Mac and download Adobe Acrobat Reader
to your computer, there is not yet a good way to do this on the Mac if you're
blind.

At someone's suggestion, I put PDFpen on my Mac, but it's partially
inaccessible. You might as well join some of the rest of us in squawking about
this.

Or I guess our workaround would be to partition your drive, boot your system as
windows, download jaws for Windows or window eyes, and fill out the forms that
way. Just another thought.

Re: Accessible means to fill out forms on the mac

2013-02-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Actually, I was reading some documentation the other day and it mentioned that
Preview works for editable PDFs. Open your document in Preview, select Edit
from within the ToolBar, then select the TextTool from within the Edit ToolBar
and you should be able to fill out pdf forms. I tried it on a form I had here
and it appeared to work fine. I have heard others on this list complain loudly
about Preview but it works fine for me. I usually press cmd-2 to put it into
"Single Page" mode and it works much better for me that way.

I would think you have to be careful about using an OCR program or a text
program to edit a file that was done as a PDF previously. I've been told it can
mess up the format, and sometimes that is not allowed by some of these
governmental organizations such as the IRS for example.

Re: Accessible means to fill out forms on the mac

2013-02-12 Thread ppowells09
Thank you for all of the good suggestions. I have a question with reference to
the type of form. Are there forms that will not lend themselves to be filled
out on the computer regardless of whether one has adobe acrobat or not? I have
heard, there are some government forms that are coated in such a way that will
not permit one to fill them out on the computer. Is this true? Once filled out,
I can sign them. I just can't see to read them.

Hi,

Actually, I was reading some documentation the other day and it mentioned that
Preview works for editable PDFs. Open your document in Preview, select Edit
from within the ToolBar, then select the TextTool from within the Edit ToolBar

and it appeared to work fine. I have heard others on this list complain loudly
about Preview but it works fine for me. I usually press cmd-2 to put it into
"Single Page" mode and it works much better for me that way.

Re: Accessible means to fill out forms on the mac

2013-02-12 Thread Eugenia Firth
Yes, my doctor office once gave me a PDF form that all you could do was print
out the thing and then fill it in by hand. Go figure. The least they could have
done was make it so it could be filled in on the computer, even if you couldn't
save it out. I have seen some state forms that let you fill in the information
on the computer, but then you have to print it without saving. Whatever the
author determines, I guess, is what you can do. The other thing is, sometimes
they are inaccessible until you go into the accessibility options to fix it.
Sometimes doesn't work for me.

2013-02-12 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi again Tim.
After your post, I tried to edit a copy of a 1040 form that I filed for 2011.
It should work since as I know, I didn't do something that would make it read
only. I did the edit toolbar which I din't know about until you said. I
interacted with it, and found the text toolbar, finally, and checked it. Then I
had done command 2 like you said. I interacted with the text thinking I needed
to if I was going to make it work. Nothing. I still can't do it. Can you figure
out what I'm doing wrong?

to all time capsule owners

2013-02-12 Thread Kliphton
Does anyone know how to port forward with the time capsule? I have a
network attached storage that is capable of being some cloud storage without
a monthly fee, and I need it to be online all the time, so I can access it
from my I-devices. I have goggled this, and found nothing, I have asked in
communities and no concrete answer. So does anyone who owns a time capsule
know? This was so much easier when I owned a Linksys AKA cisco router.

Editing text

2013-02-12 Thread Georgina Joyce

Hello All,

I'm struggling to have fluent cursor tracking. Whether it's the mail
app, pages or safari's search field. It seems VO is not reporting the
cursor position correctly. As there are several ways of using VO i.e. VO
cursor locked to cursor, locked to mouse etc. How do I get the best
cursor tracking when editing text?

Thanks.

in. If navigating to the right, the cursor is located to the right of the last
character or word spoken by Voiceover. If moving to the left, the cursor is
located to the left of the last character or word spoken.

Craig's list app?

2013-02-12 Thread Christina C.
Hi,

Which Craig's List app do you recommend that is very VO friendly. I have the
free version of Craig's List Pro. It used to be much more accessible and now I
find it quite cumbersome and I keep getting lost and having to ask for sighted
assistance.

Thanks,
Christina C.

Hi Chris.

You are wright, plist has been changed to binary files.
Thank you. I will try that, but you know, I am not good at working in terminal.

If anybody should know a program, that can be used, I still would be interested.

Can we use bbedit?

Re: Editing .plist files.

2013-02-12 Thread Chris Blouch
There used to be a standalone property list editor app that came as part
of xcode but it seems that got merged into the main app a while ago. You
can still open a plist file within Xcode and use their hierarchical
editor, which seems to work pretty well with voiceover. Just have to
remember to use VO backslash to expand/collapse tree nodes.

OT: selling my mac.

2013-02-12 Thread Chris Bruinenberg
Hi all,
I'm sorry to be writing this today. For work and school which i use my
mac for most of this just isn't working out for me.
I need to do heavy formatting with papers and complex pdf files for my classes.
My question for anybody on this list is:
How much do you feel is a reasonable asking price for a macbook pro 13
inch 2012 model.
2.5 core i5 processor
8 gb ram
500 gb hard drive
Box and case to go on the mac.
A copy of vmware fusion.
I'd even throw in a copy of windows 7 professional.
Thanks and sorry but feel free to contact me off list.
Thank you.
Chris
PS: thanks to everybody for all of your tips and help.

Re: Editing text

2013-02-12 Thread Eugenia Firth
 Hi there
The cursor behavior in VoiceOver can be changed if you want to behave like
Windows. I haven't done it myself; I just got used to it. If you want to change
it, first go to the VoiceOver Utility with VO F8. You will need the FN key
maybe if you have a laptop and haven't changed the behavior of this key. Then
go down arrow until you hear Verbosity. Press the tab key. It will probably say
Speech. Press right arrow twice until you hear VoiceOver say Text. Press space
bar to choose it. Then press the tab key three times until you hear the choice
that says "Speak text to the right of the cursor".

I hope this helps and is not confusing. This will make VoiceOver speak during
deletions like you're used to in Windows.
I just tried this, and I just decided I like it better the way the default is.
I'm not used to it any more, so I think I'll change it back.

Regards,
Gigi

Yes. Cmd-left/right moves to the start or end of the line, up/down to the top
or bottom of the edit field. Option-left/right moves by word, up/down by
paragraph. Add shift to select by the movement instead of just moving by it.

I'm struggling to have fluent cursor tracking. Whether it's the mail app,

locked to cursor, locked to mouse etc. How do I get the best cursor
 tracking when editing text?

 Thanks.

Re: gMail won't download new messages

2013-02-12 Thread kari johns
The account is online, I've already checked that. The only thing that isn't
rite as far as I can see is the get new mail button. It's dimmed like it's
downloading the mail, but never actually does it.
And if the account was off line I shouldn't be able to send mail, which I can,
I just can'd receive new mail. I'm completely stumped

Re: Accessible means to fill out forms on the mac

2013-02-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I did have to use VO-shift-space to activate the text area within the pdf
document. Sorry, I forgot to mention that part in my first post. VO-space
wouldn't do anything but the simulated mouse-click VO-shift-space activated the
text area for me.

Hope it works for you.

searching for stations in radium

2013-02-12 Thread Daniel Miller
Hello,

I just downloaded the trial or Radium version 3, and am stumped on how to
search for station. From what it seems, this app doesn't seem as accessible as
people are making it out to be.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Re: messages app question

2013-02-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
hi,

Your phone number is added automatically if you've set up iMessage and/or
FaceTime on your iPhone. Once set up on the iPhone, it will sync with your
Apple ID on all devices set up for iMessages and FaceTime with that same Apple
ID. As your phone number is not showing up, then I'm guessing that, for some
reason,, your iPhone is not set up properly with iMessage or FaceTime. Try the
following on your iPhone:

• Go into Settings.
• Open Messages panel.
• Make sure iMessage is turned on.
• Back to Settings.
• Open your faceTime panel.
• Double-tap on the Apple ID item.
• You'll need to enter your Apple ID password here to gain access to these
settings.
• There will be a list of eMails and/or phone numbers associated with your
Apple ID.
• VO will say "Selected" then the eMail or phone number if it is active for
FaceTime.
• If VO does not say "Selected", then double-tap on the eMail or phone number
to activate it.
• Double-tap on any you wish to deselect if they are selected in error.

The FaceTime and iMessage numbers are related and thus by modifying these
settings from within the FaceTime settings, your iMessage settings should also
have similar settings.

HTH.

Remote Control for a DVR

2013-02-12 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Yes, I know not a mac question, but just wwanted to check if anyone
here knew of a good remote control that might have voice navigation to
control a Timw Warner DVR, and if not Time Warner, if anyone has found
a good remote control to use with a DVR. I have been a long time Tivo
user and my Tivo is crapping out, so I am switching to a Time Warner
DVR, neither the Tivo nor the Time Warner DVR have any kind of
accessibility options, and I still remember the Tivo DVR remote from
when I could still see, but switching to a Time Warner DVR which I
have never used I have no clue how to work the DVR or remote. I was
thinking if I could find a remote control that speaks to me maybe it
would help with working the DVR. Any ideas or suggestions is greatly
appreciated. The Time Warner Iphone app is surprisingly completely
accessible, and I am able to set programs to record but it doesn't
have a remote control option in the app for playback, so while it is
great that I can set programs with no way to playback anything it kind
of defeats the purpose.
