In iOS, if you hear the sound, you can just double tap to dismiss the
suggestion. If you wish to accept the suggestion, just press space. To review
the suggestions, as Alex said you just need to swipe down.

Re: Importing favorites in to safari

2013-02-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I exported my favourites to Dropbox, and then imported that file from Dropbox
into Safari. It's really quite easy. There should be an export menu in Firefox,
probably in the file or bookmarks menu. Follow the instructions to save the
file wherever you want; on a flash disc, for example. And then choose import
from the file menu in Safari and then simply brows to the exported file from
Firefox and select it. Safari will do the rest.

I do suggest once you have imported those favourites/bookmarks, you copy them
into your Bookmarks Menu in Safari. That way you can access them from the
Bookmarks Menu in the Menu Bar in Safari.

Re: Question about bookmarks

2013-02-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hmm, that's odd. I get Open, Open in New Window, Open in New Tab, Rename
Bookmark…, Edit Address, Copy and Delete. Not sure why this is so. If you
VO-Left Arrow from the bookmark, do you get its address? A work around might be
for you to copy that address, press Command-L to move to the address bar, and
paste it in, then press enter.

If you're in that table view, there should be two tables. IN the left most
table there should be a folder called Bookmarks Menu. Select this, and then
paste your bookmarks into the right most table. I would not put all my
bookmarks in the other folder, Bookmarks Bar, if I were you. I keep Bookmarks
Bar just for the nine bookmarks I use most often. Then you can easily switch
between these using Command and numbers one through nine.

QuickTime plugging Apple Mail problem.

2013-02-03 Thread Danny Noonan
I've asked once before but thought I'd ask one more time as this issue is
getting worse. Several times a day, mail will crash telling me there's a
problem with the quicktime mail plugging and restart mail.

Is this a known issue? Any solutions round or is there a way I can attempt to
track down where why how and the like?

Many thanks.

2013-02-03 Thread Chris Moore
lol so it is not just me then Riccardo, I am finding the same problems with
Numbers. Shame really, as it could be quite a nice app.

If MS Office was accessible, I would buy it within a heart beat. Most of my
work resolves around using MS Office on Windows, but for everything else, I try
to use my Mac instead, as I much prefer the Mac.

I love Microsoft Word, Excel, and even don't mind Outlook, I have also now
started using Access. Power point is a bit hit and miss with me. The thought
of being able to run these apps on my Mac would mean I could quite happily give
my employer my Windows laptop back.

that's what their employers insist upon. Making MS Office would make the Mac

VoiceOver slow to appear after sleep

2013-02-03 Thread Phil Halton
Sometimes after my iMac has been asleep, usually overnight, VoiceOver will not
come up talking right away after I press a key and the system wakes up.
Sometimes it takes several minutes.
In fact, its not only
VO, but system sounds as well that are tardy after a wake up.

I've also noticed the same problem with the AppleTV, but my only real concern
is with the Mac. Any ideas about this?

Re: mac application prismo is half price in Mac app store

2013-02-03 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Esther,

Thanks for the link to the demo. As John indicated, it's hard to figure out
how to perform an actual scan. I did interact with the toolbar and was able to
configure settings, but that's as far as I've gotten.

Re: o. t.: Microsoft Office for Mac! Important: read and leave comments!

2013-02-03 Thread Keith Watson
It depends on the form that you get. Some of the forms have complex tables and
elements that text edit don't handle very well. Sure you can get the gist of
the letter but there are elements that are add to the docs in order for them to
be 508 compliant per SSA requirements. And text edit does not read those
changes. Believe me I have tested and read hundreds of thousands of documents
over the past 3 years.

Re: mac application prismo is half price in Mac app store

2013-02-03 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

I have in fact godt prizmo to work, but I would recommend to do the scanning
with vuescan, and do the OCR with prizmo.

I bought it a wile ago on a macupdate desktop offer.

The Ocr is very good. In fact I got better results with some cookbooks than in
finereader 11. But I have an a3 scanner, and the prizmo for mac can still not
use a3 format, that will hopefully be fixed soon, it can still not split
doubble pages, that will also be fixed.and there should also be some VoiceOver
improvements.
Send a mail for the developer, so that they know, that we would like to use
their app, and would like some improvements.

Best regards Annie.

Hello,

My friend Mike Malarsie has recorded a new tutorial on his How To Be Blind

Hi.

I agree with you Christer.

Here in Denmark it is exactly the same situation.

A very important thing will be to make tables and all text areas accessible. We
are having major problems with tables on the mac as VoiceOver users, they are
not accessible in any application. To make ms office accessible will be 1 of
the most important steps forward for mac users.

Best regards Annie.

Re: Question about bookmarks

2013-02-03 Thread Rachel Feinberg
Greetings:

Is there a way to move bookmarks from the bookmarks bar to the main bookmarks
menu? I wasn't aware that the bar was only for those favorites you wanted to
access often. And i'd like to move them to the regular menu, below the bar.
Thanks,

Re: Question about bookmarks

2013-02-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Try going up to the Bookmarks menu, select Show All Bookmarks, then you're able
to Cut and Paste items from one area to the other. There will be two Tables,
one that lists your categories like Bookmark Menu, Bookmark Bar etc and another
that lists the contents of the selected category. Simply highlight the
category, navigate to the table of its contents, and Cut what you want moved to
another Bookmark location. Next, go over and highlight the category where you
wish it to reside and Paste it into there.

HTH.

Re: Using time capsule to play movies?

2013-02-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I believe that it may be technically possible but not extremely practical. You
would need to probably partition your TC so that the backups were on a separate
partition then set your Mac to automatically mount the other partition where
your iTunes content is stored. Then when you started iTunes, it would access
its Library from that network drive. I think that performance would be
compromised and other inconsistencies may occur. Why not simply use the Home
Sharing feature built-in to iTunes so that all users with the same AppleID in
your house could access that Library?

I can no longer use Spotlight search. When I press command space, nothing

Re: My Spotlight is out

2013-02-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The VO-m three times is no longer available as a Spotlight shortcut. The
cmd-space is a built-in function of the Mac so you shouldn't need to create it
yourself. Not entirely sure why yours is not working but you could just use
cmd-f (Find) when in the Finder which accesses the same engine I believe.

Re: auto corrections in mail messages and while typing

2013-02-03 Thread Alex Hall
Where on the word are you? Also, are you possibly mistaking the "misspelled
word" sound for the "suggestions available" sound? The former is the sort of
ratchet sound, the latter a higher, shorter tone. Finally, do you have "correct
spelling as I type" enabled in system preferences and in the application? I had
it on in system preferences, but for the longest time it would not work in
Mail. I finally found that I had to go into the edit menu, then the spelling
and grammar submenu, and turn on the option in there.

Re: Using time capsule to play movies?

2013-02-03 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Tim,

We already have home-sharing turned on. We were thinking that it would be cool
to store our movies on a drive that connects wirelessly to my MBA. but I
suppose if we have to use a standard portable drive, that isn't the end of the
world. But it does raise another question or two. Can I set up iTunes so that
only the movies in my library are stored on a portable drive? And if I do
that, will iTunes be messed up when that drive isn't connected?
Thanks,
Donna

Just to add some. My wife has it. I can access most menus but none of the

Reminder that BrailleTouch goes up in price tomorrow

2013-02-03 Thread Alex Hall
I know this is a bit off topic for this list, but many of us have iOS devices
on here. Don't forget that today is the last day to get BrailleTouch for $15;
tomorrow it goes up to $20. If you are on the fence about upgrading, consider
taking the plunge today, since that same plunge tomorrow will be $5 more. If
you haven't yet tried out the app, please do so; it is really amazing, and free
to try. What your $15 (or $20) gets you is the ability to use the text you
write for emails, messages, tweets, or copying to the clipboard to paste into
any app.

you want untethered, and believe me when I say that untethered is the way to
go. Otherwise you will be depending on a tethered jailbreak, and it means
you have to connect your phone to the computer and run software when it
reboots. Additionally, there has been a very difficult time of it from the
hackers on getting it working right. So, the good news is that if you wait
for the long-awaited untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1, it's a good chance it
will be made available this Sunday. Now, to address some of the other things
which came up in this thread.
>>>
>>> If you have a new iPhone and it came with iOS 6, you can't downgrade.
This is because of Apple signing each firmware installation for your phone.
I don't understand the specifics, but if you Google for shsh blobs, it will
give a better description for it. I have been able to downgrade in the past
before, but that was because I had saved my shsh blobs from a prior iOS
version.
>>>
>>> The question I see come up often is if jailbreaking is worth it. I mean,
you lose Apple tech support, and supposedly void your warranty if you have
one. If you find that you need to have your device serviced, then you can
restore and go back to the current iOS and it will be unjailbroken. Of
course you will lose your settings and jailbreak apps, but that's a risk you
take when you go for the jailbreak path. I just realized I didn't answer my
own question on if jailbreaking is right or not. Like with all things in
life, it depends on the user and whether said user wants to trade in the
warranty for certain conveniences. Or even more importantly, it highly
depends on whether jailbreaking will enhance the user experience for the
specific user.
>>>
>>> I'll give an example, if you have been using the iPhone unjailbroken and
it's met your needs, or you are really concerned about tech support from
Apple and/or warranty service, then jailbreaking isn't for you. If you
aren't concerned about their tech support or warranty, but you don't need
the enhancements that jailbreaking provides, then again, jailbreaking may
not be for you. I teach new users how to use the iPhone and even though I'm
a huge jailbreak fan, I don't recommend it to my clients unless they ask
about it first, and only if they feel they really need it.
>>>
>>> I could go on and on about all the cool things you can do extra with a
jailbroken iPhone, but the list would be too long. Suffice it to say that
even though I'm using iOS 5.1.1 still on my 4S, I'm enjoying most of the iOS
6 features due to some sort of jailbreak enhancement. The one feature I will
mention here is probably 80% of the reason why I jailbreak in the first
place. I'm a Google Voice user, and I have totally integrated my Google
Voice number so that even tapping on phone numbers in text messages or web
pages or apps, will use my GV number to call the tapped number. Furthermore,
sending and receiving text messages using my Google Voice number is seamless
and can be done through the messages app. These are things you cannot do
unless you jailbreak.
>>>

come out, but if it doesn't, I'll be sticking with iOS 5.1.1 for a bit
longer.

Skype help needed

2013-02-03 Thread Bill Holton
Hi.
Had Skype working fine yesterday on my Mac Mini with a desk mike and my
speakers.
Today I tried adding a usb headset, and everything went downhill.
I have Skype set to use the usb headset in the call speakers pop up box, and
the volume is set to 75%. I have ringers set to use all devices.
Now, when I make the Skype test call, I hear the begin call blurp in the
headset, but then it's silence everywhere, no ringing, no voice, until the
call ends and I get the call end sound. If I try to now put the speaker
back to the Mini's external speakers, again silence.
Any help with what I may have done wrong greatly appreciated.

Hi Bill,

If possible, with the USB headset plugged in, go to system preferences, to the
sound category. Change the sfx tab, input, and output tabs, to all use your

Gifting a book in iTunes

2013-02-03 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

I've just tried to buy an audiobook for a friend in iTunes 11. Previously I had
no problems going into the actions menu when finding a book I wished to buy for
somebody and choosing buying it as a gift. A new dialogue would open which
would allow you to do so. However, now this has turned out to be difficult.
Firstly, I had to try and activate the button a few times before it allowed me
to see the dialogue. Having done so once, I wanted to buy another book. No way
could I activate that button. Strangely though, when I examined the screen
carefully with Voiceover, I found at the right edge of the screen/page the date
on which I'd like the gift delivered. This is indeed a part of the dialogue
page where you fill in all the necessary details for the gift. But I could not
find any other elements of that dialogue. Has anyone else noticed this strange
behaviour? I must have spent nearly an hour trying to accomplish the purchase
of the gift but to no avail.

Andrew

anyone store the movies in their iTunes library on a portable hard drive?

2013-02-03 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I have two questions re the storing of movies in the iTunes library.

1. Is it possible to store them on a portable hard drive?

2. If the answer to No. 1 is yes, if the drive is not connected to your Mac,
does that mess up your iTunes library?

Thanks for any thoughts or experiences anyone can share.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: buying ipad mini, will it be ok?

2013-02-03 Thread Alex Hall
That depends on what you want it for. The iPhone5 supports the phone things,
like messaging and phone calls, and is pocket-sized. The iPad Mini is larger,
and cannot do phone calls or texts, plus rumor has it that a new one will be
out pretty soon. So, if it is a phone you want, go with the iPhone, else wait a
month or two and see what the next-generation Mini looks like.

2013-02-03 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi.

Yes, you can store them on a portable drive, but the drive does need to be
connected in order for iTunes to access them, otherwise they'll just be stubs
in your library that aren't able to be played.

Re: anyone store the movies in their iTunes library on a portable hard drive?

2013-02-03 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi,

thanks. I figured the drive would need to be connected in order to access the
movies. What I meant by my second question is, if the drive is not connected,
is iTunes rendered unusable, i.e. can I play music or access other content that
does reside on my computer?

Also, how do you configure iTunes to tell it that your movies are on a remote
drive?
Cheers,
Donna

It would work with time machine. Your portable drive would show there. You

OK, now I'm confused. Are you saying I don't have to tell iTunes too look for

Re: buying ipad mini, will it be ok?

2013-02-03 Thread Alex Hall
Yes it can, but you'd need then to get a cellular iPad, plus the app you use
may charge you to have a phone number which landlines or other cell phones can
call. Also, you cannot hold the iPad up to your ear, so if you are out and
about you'd need to use the speaker/microphone in the iPad or carry a headset
of some kind. I'm still not sure what your goal with the device would be, so I
cannot give you better advice.

Re: anyone store the movies in their iTunes library on a portable hard drive?

2013-02-03 Thread J.P.
No, it would automatically show the backup drive. You would interact with both
drives for your specific setup. You would decide what you want where. Most
portable drives are very user friendly to understand. Just remember to keep
extra backup of portable, in case of fail.

Re: anyone store the movies in their iTunes library on a portable hard drive?

2013-02-03 Thread Phil Halton
I have my iTunes library on an external drive and I have several movies
contained therein.

If you disconnect the external drive, and then start iTunes, I believe you
will be prompted for the location of a library for iTunes to use.

drive?

Hi all,

I have two questions re the storing of movies in the iTunes library.

1. Is it possible to store them on a portable hard drive?

2. If the answer to No. 1 is yes, if the drive is not connected to your
Mac, does that mess up your iTunes library?

Thanks for any thoughts or experiences anyone can share.
Cheers,

Re: anyone store the movies in their iTunes library on a portable hard drive?

2013-02-03 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

yes. You would. You would first need to go into iTunes preferences and under
advanced, uncheck that option to copy added media to your iTunes folder. After
that, you just add your movies to iTunes from your external drive like you
would anything else. But, instead of copying the movies to your internal
drive, or where ever your iTunes media folder happens to be located, iTunes
will play the content directly from the external drive.

Where's the mic on an iMac?

2013-02-03 Thread Phil Halton
I'm trying to record a voicemail message from my iPhone into GarageBand on the
iMac. I've decided the quick and easy way to do this is just to hold the
iPhone, with speakerphone on, up to the builtin mic.

Its a late 2011 21.5 iMac. I assume the mic is in the center of the top edge of
the screen, am I close?

My little experiments tell me I am, but I just want to hear from someone else
on this.\

Also, is it possible to use the mic on the iPhone earbuds to record? How would
i set things up to do that?

Thanks for any help

Thanks. Problem turned out to be with Audio Hijack Pro. I had bought a

it was taking the audio from Skype and noa allowing it to come through to
me. I restarted the Mini, and now all is working fine. Only problem is
now, the skype.mp3 files won't play in iTunes, I have to move them into my
dropbox and onto my Win machine to play them.

Re: Jailbreak iPhone 4S

2013-02-03 Thread Michael Babcock
Please read this entire message to the ends, to find a link to get more
information. Apparently, the date of Super Bowl being when iOS 6.1 jailbreak
will be out, was slightly incorrect. The website below explains that it is 91%
of the way complete, and the next step is to be released. According to the
Twitter, linked out the website below, they will be releasing at sometime
tomorrow. Therefore, I hope this helps a little bit of people.
For those of you interested in the jailbreaking process, my suggestion would be
to monitor this website, as this is the website to the developers. Therefore,
you would CS soon as it is available if you monitor this site, or follow the
individuals on Twitter.

Hello Krysti, I may have some information for you. Also, Mauricio, the

Anyway, jailbreaking iOS 6.0 or 6.01 is not really possible right now if
you want untethered, and believe me when I say that untethered is the way
to go. Otherwise you will be depending on a tethered jailbreak, and it
means you have to connect your phone to the computer and run software when
it reboots. Additionally, there has been a very difficult time of it from
the hackers on getting it working right. So, the good news is that if you
wait for the long-awaited untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1, it's a good
chance it will be made available this Sunday. Now, to address some of the
other things which came up in this thread.

If you have a new iPhone and it came with iOS 6, you can't downgrade. This
is because of Apple signing each firmware installation for your phone. I
don't understand the specifics, but if you Google for shsh blobs, it will
give a better description for it. I have been able to downgrade in the
past before, but that was because I had saved my shsh blobs from a prior

The question I see come up often is if jailbreaking is worth it. I mean,
you lose Apple tech support, and supposedly void your warranty if you have
one. If you find that you need to have your device serviced, then you can
restore and go back to the current iOS and it will be unjailbroken. Of
course you will lose your settings and jailbreak apps, but that's a risk
you take when you go for the jailbreak path. I just realized I didn't
answer my own question on if jailbreaking is right or not. Like with all
things in life, it depends on the user and whether said user wants to
trade in the warranty for certain conveniences. Or even more importantly,
it highly depends on whether jailbreaking will enhance the user experience
 for the specific user.

I teach new users how to use the iPhone and even though
I'm a huge jailbreak fan, I don't recommend it to my clients unless they
ask about it first, and only if they feel they really need it.

I could go on and on about all the cool things you can do extra with a
jailbroken iPhone, but the list would be too long. Suffice it to say that
even though I'm using iOS 5.1.1 still on my 4S, I'm enjoying most of the
iOS 6 features due to some sort of jailbreak enhancement. The one feature

Have you set up your account on other devices? I'm wondering if you do not

Re: o. t.: Microsoft Office for Mac! Important: read and leave comments!

2013-02-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
"The only question I have: How interested might Microsoft be to make the Mac
more attractive to blind users?"

I don't think Sara would have joined this thread if Microsoft were not
interested in making MS Office for Mac accessible.

However, I agree with you that making the Mac a viable alternative to Windows
for blind people would not seem a likely incentive for Microsoft. Hence I am a
little puzzled why so many people seem to be posting about this issue, rather
than about what in particular Sara and her team at Microsoft could do to make
Microsoft Office for Mac more accessible.

Personally, I'm already using a Mac, as I guess are most people on this list.
Making MS Office for Mac accessible would make me a loyal purchaser of MS
Office for Mac, which I am not currently. I would likely continue to still use
Windows in some capacity as I do now given work requirements and better support
for reading PDFs.

Making my macbook go to sleep

2013-02-03 Thread Jed Barton
Hey guys,
Forgive me for so many questions. How do I make it so wheni close the lid
on my macbook, it doesn't go to sleep?
This is kind of annoying as I'll keep it closed most of the time as I use an
external keyboard?

Thanks,
Jed

Apple mail and retreiving mail

2013-02-03 Thread Jed Barton
Hey guys,
I am having some difficulty retreiving my email using apple mail. I'm using
gmail, and it's not working. I enabled imap. I can send email with no
problem, yet when I go to retreive it, no go, but yet it isn't giving me any
errors.
I can send myself a message and it shows up on my phone, but my mac doesn't
get it, any ideas?

Thanks,
Jed

Hi Jed.
I think there is no way of doing this.
I will look around the settings a bit more.

Re: Apple mail and retreiving mail

2013-02-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Tid Bits Publishers produce a great series of books on how to use Mac OS X.
It's called the Take Control series. In particular, they have a new Take
Control of Apple Mail in Mountain Lion book. It goes through how to set up Mail
in great detail. At first I thought it was silly getting a whole book on
something so simple, but I'm so glad I bought it. It's been a great help and I
only regret not buying it earlier. It's only 10 or 15 dollars.

You can access Take Control of Apple Mail along with many other titles from
http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/catalog-accessible

Best of luck.

Re: Is skype accessible

2013-02-03 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Yes, it's accessible.

• To the right of the tool bar there should be a table. Interact
with this table and use the VoiceOver keys (control and option together) along
with the up and down arrows to select contacts.
• Stop interacting with the table and then navigate with
control-option right arrow and you can choose between all contacts, skype
contacts, online contacts, address book contacts, Facebook contacts etc.
• Then if you control-option right arrow some more you'll come to
another table. Before this there will be a contacts view mode radio group. I
recommend you interact with this radio group and select list as your view mode.
Then stop interacting with the contacts view mode radio group and navigate to
the table to the right.
• This should contain all the contacts of the type you have
selected (e.g. Skype, Facebook, Online etc).
• Navigate to the contact you want to interact with and then
press control-option-shift-m, to bring up the context menu. From here you can
choose to call or instant message.

Best of luck.
