 Hi all,
I was reading through some of Apple's developer documentation and I
stumbled across a way to assign hotkeys to buttons in dialogs. For
instance, if a dialog comes up asking you to "save", "don't save", or
"cancel", you might hit cmd-d to activate "don't save". This is
similar to Windows' scheme of letting you press alt with a key to
activate a button in most dialogs. Ever since I started using the mac,
the absence of these access keys has bugged me, as they are such
time-savers, particularly in dialogs with a lot of buttons to tab or
vo-arrow through. However, having discovered that it is possible, at
least programmatically, to implement access keys, I have to wonder if
these keys are available, but simply not announced by Voiceover? Is
there a setting that will let vo speak the keys, much like NVDA or
Jaws on Windows will say something like "save button, alt plus s"? Or
is the case simply that, while access keys are possible, no one uses
 them? Thanks.

Re: getting to deleted items folder

2013-01-23 Thread Danny Noonan
if you want your trash folder accessible via a command number keystroke, you
can add it to your favourites bar. Interact with your mailbox list, arrow to
the folder you wish to add, mark for dragging with vo , then stop interacting,
vo left arrow to favourites bar, interact, vo left/right arrow to the spot you
want it to be, after the 3rd folder name and it will be fourth with command 4
etc. Now, drop the folder with vo . and fingers crossed, it'll be in your
favourites bar.

Some people, myself included have a problem rearranging folder order or
removing folders from the favourite bar since MountainLion but 99% of the time,
adding them works well.

Hope this helps.

Okay, I have figured out how to create a distribution list. But what I'm
wondering is, if someone has more than 1 email address, how do I tell it to
only send to 1? Or does it pick the first address listed? Thanks.

Do you know of the "Quick Search" option in VoiceOver? If it's selected
you can use one of the CMD keys + the first letter of anything and VO
brings you to the next entry with this first letter. Means for dialogue

You can use it to jump by first letter navigation to VoiceOver elements on the

No problem, even if you found the "new group" option, it would be hard to know

Preview Question!

2013-01-23 Thread jshandra72

Hey guys,
I have sort of a strange question. I need to quickly sign some legal
documents. I know that Preview has a signature option in preferences. Will I be
able to use signature capture on my own, or will I need sighted help? I'm not
sure how accessible that feature is. Thanks for your assistance. Unfortunately
I don't have FineReader at the ready right now.
Best, J. P.

2013-01-23 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I did it by going to Google. You know how at the end of messages it gives you
links for changing options. I had to look around for it, and it's been a while
since I did it. But, you can change the email address yourself. I did this so I
could send this list to the Cloud. Now I can better manage the traffic because
I don't get duplicate emails.

Actually, I would have figured to copy/paste, seeing that is how you would copy

Open contacts, then go to file, new, new group. Give it a name, and
you'll be in the groups table. Arrow up to "all contacts", and find the contact
you want in your group in the contacts table (optionally using the search
field). Hit cmd-c on the contact, then go back to the groups table, move to the
group you want, and, right on the group name, cmd-v. Repeat the process for all
the contacts you want. I haven't tried this one, but I imagine multiple
selections will also work just fine.

Managing List Subscriptions [was Re: To the Moderator of this list]

2013-01-23 Thread Esther
Hello Laura, Rafael, J.P., Kimsan, Gigi, and Others

You can manage both the type of your subscriptions (No Email, Email, Digest
Email, or Unsubscribe to permanently leave the list) and the email address(es)
that you use for all your Google Group list memberships by going to the
following URL, which is the page for "Manage My Memberships"

http://groups.google.com/groups/mysubs?hl=en_US&pli=1

This page lets you select the email address used to receive list posts as well
as your subscription type option from pop up menus for each list you subscribe
to under Google Groups. However, this only lets you select the email address
you use from among the valid (posting) email addresses that are already
associated with your account. If you want your subscription to go to a new
email address, navigate to the link on the above page for "My Google account"
to Change your email address, nickname, or password. VO-Space on that link to
navigate to the "Account Overview" page. Then use item chooser menu (VO-I),
type in "Email", and navigate to the section with the Email information for
your account. You can activate the "Edit" link immediately following "Email"
to make general changes to your account, including adding any Email addresses
you want to under the "Change your associated Email addresses" heading by
typing in additional Email addresses into the text box for "Add a new alternate
Email" and then pressing the "Save" button. Alternatively, if you simply want
to change the primary email for the account, on the "Account Overview" page you
can navigate directly to the "Edit" link immediately following the "Primary
email address" info and activate that link.

For more details and answers to related specific questions, check the following
list posts that were found from a search of this list's archives:
• Re: The New Google Groups Site and viewing/changing membership options?
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg64431.html
• Re: Changing list email address and subscription options [was Re: How to stop
receiving mail from the list without unsubscribing?]
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg67853.html

These posts explain various other questions that came up, like reminding users
that if you're prompted to log in with an email address and password, the email
address you use is the one you used to create your Google Account -- it need
not be your current email address. Also, the above procedure of adding email
addresses associated with your account assumes that you have not created
multiple Google Accounts by multiple unsubscribes and creations of new Google
Accounts. You only ever need to modify one account to manage your
subscriptions, and you cannot add multiple email addresses that are already
associated with different Google Accounts that you have forgotten about. If
you do add new Email addresses from the "Account Overview" page, you can
navigate back to the "Manage My Memberships" page and change the pop up menu
buttons for which address is used to receive mail subscriptions. And you can
post to the list using Email addresses from any of the addresses that you have
added, and which appear in the pop-up menu.

If you want to read up or down the linked threads at the Mail Archive for this
list, use Control+p to read previous posts in the thread, and Control+n to read
the next post in the thread. (These shortcut keys are for Safari).

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Pages Question

2013-01-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Kimsan,

To adjust the line spacing in Pages, open the Inspector (Cmd-Option-i) and
select the Text button. Then Select the Text tab and navigate right to Color &
Alignment, then navigate down to Line. Go down to the next line and once right
where you can type in the figure 2 for double spacing.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Grabbing a web site?

2013-01-23 Thread Chris Blouch
I don't know of a Safari plugin but if you have MacPorts installed you
get the open source wget tool and then use it in terminal to grab a
bunch of pages and store them on your hard drive:

wget -mcrpk -o process.log http://www.abcd.com

Parameters:

O - output of the process is written to a file instead of the display.
In this case I logged everything to process.log

M - Mirror - copies timestamps and recursion
C - Continues a partly-downloaded transfer. Probably not as big an issue
on a good connection
R - Recursion, but this might not have been needed with the M. Figured
it didn't hurt.

P - Download any page dependencies like CSS, images etc.
K - Convert all links to relative URLs so it doesn't keep trying to link
off to the original site or path

It will crawl every link of every page and store it all in your current
folder. Then you can webshare that folder to make your own mini version
of the site or just open the top level file in Safari. The latter method
may not always work since modern sites use javascript ajax stuff to suck
in piecesparts from a web server which is not what is happening when you
just open a file directly from your hard drive.

It would have been easy, if we could use office for mac for filling in tables

Is there any ways, that we can fill in tables of the docx format retaining the

Mac mini ram and hd questions

2013-01-23 Thread Mary Otten
I was certain that I had read somewhere that you could have two drives in a mac
Mini, 2012 model. But on the Apple site, the build to order options don't allow
for that. Am I nuts? Or is this a possible after market add on? I know there
aren't many of those. Also curious about peoples' experiences with ram. I'm
thinking of the 8 gb upgrade, although there is a 16-gb for 200 dollars more
than the 8. I want to run Windows and Mac os, because I still need MS Word and
still use k1000. Hence the interest in two drives. I don't do any real big deal
processing things on the Mac or Windows, for that matter. But if I had a vm
running and email up and software speech and scanning program etc, would the 8
gb suffice? I'd hate to buy an IMac, because I don't need the display nor
another keyboard nor a mouse, so it just seems kind of wasteful; hence my
interest in another mini. The one I have now is a bit over 3 years old and
still going strong, but it runs sl, and I'm starting to have issues, like not
being able to use the nightly webkit builds anymore, and I suspect that the web
issues are only going to get worse, not better.

RE: Mac mini ram and had questions

2013-01-23 Thread Kliphton
It depends on what you want, and how much your trying to spend. You can get
a 2012 mac mini, with 2 drives in it for a pretty good price. Now it
depends if you want them to be your standard HD, or you want SSD's. I know
for a fact you can get either one. 8GB of ram is plenty to handle fusion
and mountain lion for what you want to do. So answer the above questions,
and I will point you in the right direction. My email is

Subject: Mac mini ram and hd questions

I was certain that I had read somewhere that you could have two drives in a
mac Mini, 2012 model. But on the Apple site, the build to order options
don't allow for that. Am I nuts? Or is this a possible after market add on?
I know there aren't many of those. Also curious about peoples' experiences
with ram. I'm thinking of the 8 gb upgrade, although there is a 16-gb for
200 dollars more than the 8. I want to run Windows and Mac os, because I
still need MS Word and still use k1000. Hence the interest in two drives. I
don't do any real big deal processing things on the Mac or Windows, for that
matter. But if I had a vm running and email up and software speech and
scanning program etc, would the 8 gb suffice? I'd hate to buy an IMac,
because I don't need the display nor another keyboard nor a mouse, so it
just seems kind of wasteful; hence my interest in another mini. The one I
have now is a bit over 3 years old and still going strong, but it runs sl,
and I'm starting to have issues, like not being able to use the nightly
webkit builds anymore, and I suspect that the web issues are only going to
get worse, not better.

2013-01-23 Thread John Panarese
I don't know if you can buy it up front. I thought there was an option for
that. I added a second SSD drive after the fact. However, I thought you could
choose a second drive when you are selecting your drive options. Maybe, you
have to buy the model with two drives now.

Re: Mac mini ram and hd questions

2013-01-23 Thread Mary Otten
Well, maybe I missed it somehow, but when I was configuring a mini yesterday, I
only saw one option to pick a drive, and there are 3 options. I also didn't see
where it said whether the conventional hard drive portion of the fusion drive
for the Mini would be the 5400 rpm or whether it is upgraded to 7200 rpm. I'm
kind of disappointed that the standard drive is still 5400. I'd like to get an
ssd and a conventional 7200 rpm drive for a total of 2 drives, but didn't see
that option. I'm keeping this on list rather than write directly, because I
figure it could be of use to others.

Sinking apps from my iPhone to the mac.

2013-01-23 Thread Danny Noonan
I'm reseting my iPhone and starting from scratch as I've had corrupted backups
for a couple of years and can't handle the issues any more.

I've backed up all the apps to iTunes, have my podcast list in OPML in an email
but want to be sure all my contacts are properly sinked with the mac. Is there
any way I can check, any settings that should be set or something? I really
don't want to lose my contacts if at all possible.

Many thanks for any info or even other suggestions on how to make the
rebuilding of the iPhone safer or go more smoothly.

Re: Mac mini ram and hd questions

2013-01-23 Thread John Panarese
I bought an SSD drive from Crucial and saved about $200 from what it would
have cost for 512 GB configured in the Mini. I already had a 500 GB SATI
drive, and you can buy a kit for installing the second drive from ifixit.com
for about $69. I had a sighted friend do the work, as I was not going to try
anything that deep. However, there is a nice video on youtube that walks one
through the process.

I believe that the people who have configured the Mac Mini with 2 hard
drives ordered the Mac mini with OS X Server model ($999). This model
has options to upgrade the two hard drives.

2013-01-23 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi Danny
I'm relatively new at this myself. But if you have iCloud turned on on your
phone and mac, , and have contacts checked in there it should work absolutely
fine. I recently restored my iPad from scratch, and once I turned iCloud on in
settings, the contacts all came back from the cloud onto my iPad. I've had the
occasional issue with multiple contacts being generated, but they are easy to
delete, and I have not lost anything. iCloud is just under settings.
Good luck.

Re: Mac mini ram and hd questions

2013-01-23 Thread Mary Otten
John,
The ssd offered by Apple is only 256. No 512GB for the Mini. At least, I didn't
see it yesterday when I was looking. I'm sure it would be big bucks. The 256gb
one is 300 bucks more than the stock configuration which is a 1500-gb or -tb,
forget which, 5400rpm conventional drive. I like the sound of the fusion
drive; seems to make a lot of sense but not sure how it would play out with a
system running a vm and Windows.

Lots of good food for thought in the responses here.

Re: Sinking apps from my iPhone to the mac.

2013-01-23 Thread Danny Noonan
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, it's when I restore from iCloud or from a
backup on my mac that is the problem. As the os is corrupted on my phone,
restoring from a backup just puts the corruption straight back onto my phone
again.

I literally have to start over and set the phone up as new.

Kind regards,

just select which groups I want to go onto my iPhone in the iPhone area in

RE: Mac mini ram and hd questions

2013-01-23 Thread Kliphton
I have a company that I had build my mini the way I wanted. And they back it
with a 3 year worentee, pretty much build it the way you want. I got a 2012
mac mini, with 2 SSD's, stripped in to 1, for 1TB of hard drive space, 2.6
GHZ quad core processor, and 16 gigs of ram. But they will configure it
anyway you want them to. The name of the company is called "retail proof"
There number is
(717) 673-8245
And the email address is
sa...@retailproof.com

Great customer service, and will even over night it for you, of course that
costs a little more. Have had mine for almost 2 months now, and I have no
complaints! If you decide to call them, tell them Kliph sent you.

Well, maybe I missed it somehow, but when I was configuring a mini
yesterday, I only saw one option to pick a drive, and there are 3 options. I
also didn't see where it said whether the conventional hard drive portion of
the fusion drive for the Mini would be the 5400 rpm or whether it is
upgraded to 7200 rpm. I'm kind of disappointed that the standard drive is
still 5400. I'd like to get an ssd and a conventional 7200 rpm drive for a
total of 2 drives, but didn't see that option. I'm keeping this on list
rather than write directly, because I figure it could be of use to others.

Hi again!
I've set up groups in contacts on my Mac but if you open your contacts on your
Mac then you can see which contacts you have in there and see if any are
missing and just add them yourself then you can get them back onto your iPhone
from there! :]

Re: Sinking apps from my iPhone to the mac.

2013-01-23 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Danny
As I understand it, syncing contacts with iCloud is different from
restoring from a previous back up.
I think there is a difference between restoring from a previous backup, which
you are not wanting to do, versus simply syncing your contacts from the cloud
once the iPhone has been set up from scratch.
I set up my iPad from scratch ie. I did not restore from a previous backup.
Once I set it up as a new iphone with my Apple ID, and turned iCloud on, the
contacts appeared back on the phone. This has nothing to do with the IOS being
corrupt.

Syncing and restoring from previous backups are different things. I'm sure
somebody else can explain it better than me.

Re: Sinking apps from my iPhone to the mac.

2013-01-23 Thread Danny Noonan
We're both thinking of the same thing in different ways. I'll be making sure
all my contacts are on my mac, then when I set my phone up again, I'll be
copying them back onto the phone. I was thinking through iTunes but as you
mentioned, they will sink up via iCloud as well so that could be a good option
too. I guess I was stuck thinking of iCloud as a backup method when I use it
all the time as a sinking tool.

Thanks.

Re: Sinking apps from my iPhone to the mac.

2013-01-23 Thread Esther
Hello Danny,

Lisette and Colin have pretty much covered this issue, but I'll mention one
apparent difference when you do your sync of Contacts from iCloud instead of
from iTunes: under iOS 6 if you created any email groups for your contacts the
groups will be synced to your iPhone if you sync via iTunes, and they will not
be on your iPhone if you sync your contacts via iCloud. This has annoyed
several people -- especially PC users who do not have access to a Mac to sync
their contacts via iTunes.

But they are correct that your sync of Contacts should not be corrupted.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

 Hi Danny
I'm relatively new at this myself. But if you have iCloud turned on on
your phone and mac, , and have contacts checked in there it should work
absolutely fine. I recently restored my iPad from scratch, and once I
turned iCloud on in settings, the contacts all came back from the cloud
onto my iPad. I've had the occasional issue with multiple contacts being
generated, but they are easy to delete, and I have not lost anything.
 iCloud is just under settings.
 Good luck.

Re: Grabbing a web site?

2013-01-23 Thread Esther
Hello Bill,

I agree with Chris that I would use wget from Terminal to grab a web
site and its dependent pages as you requested. However, if you want
to look for a GUI based solution, you might try explore a free app
that you can get from the Mac App store named SiteSucker. This
question came up on the mac-access list, and most of the responses
were to use wget or curl from the Terminal. But the poster was asking
on behalf of a friend, who didn't feel comfortable using Terminal.
You can read my post about SiteSucker and another app named Maria in
the Mail Archive post at:
• Re: download managers.
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access%40mac-access.net/msg12870.html

This post gives the links to SiteSucker, and a few comments about
trying it. If you read two more posts down the thread (using Control-
n to go to the next to posts) you can read the statement about Maria.
I'm afraid we didn't spend very much time on this topic, since the
person who posed the question had already suggested to his friend that
the best way was to use wget, and the other people responding about
alternatives basically also agreed that wget was what they would
recommend. And since the friend in question was not a list member,
and the questions were being relayed at second hand, there was not
much incentive to investigate in more detail .

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Thanks. I have them in groups on my phone thanks to an old app that was once vo

groups on the mac and putting them on via iTunes then.

I greatly appreciate all the help from the list on this and every other topic.

Have a wonderful week all.

Re: Sinking apps from my iPhone to the mac.

2013-01-23 Thread Esther
Hi Danny,

I'll correct my earlier statement: if you want to preserve your email groups,
you can still sync them from iCloud. However, they have to be set up under
your contacts on your Mac computer. And the way to display the email group
contacts is, to say the least, unintuitive. I did an iCloud sync of my
contacts to my iPhone 5, and I though these did not come across. But under iOS
6, when you navigate to the "Groups" screen on your iPhone you get a listing of
groups by name, along with an announcement of whether the group is "selected".
Double tapping any of these groups only changes the designation from between
"selected" or not (i.e., no additional VoiceOver status announcement). Under
iOS 5, when you double tapped on a group, the address book entries associated
with that group were displayed. In order to display the contacts of a group
under iOS 6, you need to go through the list of groups, double tapping, so that
only one group is announced as "selected". Then, double tap the "Done" button
in the top right corner. That will display the address book listing of the
selected group (or groups). If you have more than one group selected, then
double tapping the "Done" button displays the merged results of your selected
groups. Since one of the entries is always "All Contacts", if that group is
selected and you double tap "Done", it will seem as though there is no
individual display of groups.

Once again, the groups have to be created under contacts on your Mac. But you
can do an iCloud Sync (if you have a Mac computer), and get your contacts
organized in email groups to your iPhone. I just thought the iCloud sync
wasn't working because I couldn't see the individual groups. I only got an
upgraded iPhone 5 in December, and my iPhone 4 was kept on iOS 5 because the
person who would be using it after me wanted to keep Google Maps.

Also, don't have both iTunes sync and iCloud sync enabled for your contacts if
you want to avoid duplicates.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

As I understand it, syncing contacts with iCloud is different from
restoring from a previous back up.
I think there is a difference between restoring from a previous backup,
which you are not wanting to do, versus simply syncing your contacts from
the cloud once the iPhone has been set up from scratch.
I set up my iPad from scratch ie. I did not restore from a previous
backup. Once I set it up as a new iphone with my Apple ID, and turned
iCloud on, the contacts appeared back on the phone. This has nothing to do
 with the IOS being corrupt.

Syncing and restoring from previous backups are different things. I'm sure
somebody else can explain it better than me.
