Re: Fed up with everything being busy busy busy

2012-12-03 Thread Oriol Gómez
Here's the thing, VoiceOver is kind of strange in that sense. I don't
understand why vo can't work with programs just like other screen
readers do, I mean we have 4 processor cores or 2 or even more for
something. You alt tab on the mac and it's still busy busy busy busy
because a program is doing something on the computer. I find it highly
frustrating.

Deleting audible books in iTunes for Donna

2012-12-03 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Donna,

I'm sure you have tried this already, but how about going to the audio books
folder under home/music/itunes/media/audiobooks? Just a thought. I was able to
successfully delete audible books this way. I hope this helps. I havne't tried
the way you have with Itunes yet. Have a great day.

using trackpad on Macbook

2012-12-03 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has some tips on using the trackpad. I shop at a chain
store here in Spain. TO add things to the basket, you have to click it with the
trackpad not the keyboard. So, never having used the trackpad, I am unsure how
to accomplish clicks and focusing it where I need it. Is it similar to the
iphone? Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
kindly.

Sincerely,
Allison

Re: using trackpad on Macbook

2012-12-03 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

In VO Utility, you can adjust the delay of VoiceOver speaking when the mouse
pointer is moved. I have mine set to no delay, so the moment I move over
something with my finger, VoiceOver speaks it, and I find that very helpful.

I have just done a search through the VO Utility, and I am sorry to say that I
do not remember where this option is, now. If anyone else has a clue, they
should feel free to chime in.

I hope this is helpful, however. Sometimes, also, I find it helpful to first
route the mouse pointer to the VoiceOver curser with VO-command-F5 before
finding my place with the trackpad, as it gets me more or less where I need to
be.

Thanks,

Harry

Hi Alex. If you don't like Safari's approach to browsing the internet, perhaps
you should try Chrome. Chromevox has been updated significantly so you can use
up and down arrow keys like in Windows. In regards to your comment about
replying to an email in Mail and getting the "busy" message, I am not
reproducing this. I use mail in it's classic view that it had in Snow Leopard
with headers turned off with no problems at all.

Hi Allison,

That's my next step. :) But you've always been able to delete them from within

thanks for the suggestion.

Re: VoiceOver stops interacting with HTML content on its own and the full screen mode also keeps getting disabled frequently

2012-12-03 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Rahul. When I used Safari in Lion in full screen, I noticed similar
problems. Voiceover would only jump to the first visible heading that it saw
and navigating was difficult all in all. I was hoping that Apple would fix
these issues but I see they haven't. You might want to send this to Apple
Accessibility so that they know of these issues and in the meantime don't run
Safari in full screen.

Re: using trackpad on Macbook

2012-12-03 Thread Alex Hall
Don't forget that vo can simulate a mouse click, which is usually sufficient.
Get vo to what you have to click, then hit vo-cmd-f5 to route the mouse to that
spot. Finlly, hit vo-shift-space to click once and see if that does the trick.
If not, just use the routing command and physically click the mouse. Harry's
suggestion of setting the mouse cursor delay is good as well as it lets you
make sure you don't move the pointer if the simulated click fails to work.

Re: Fed up with everything being busy busy busy

I am not experiencing these busy busy busy problems. Once in a while, a
particular program will hang and go busy but in most of those cases, it is
stuck doing something like trying to get new mail or like yesterday when I
accidentally told the bookmarks menu to open all 47 bookmarks in separate tabs.
That brought my Mac down to its knees till I killed the process. All and all,
my Mac has performed pretty well even with only 2 GB of RAM.

First, I use standard view, and second, I have a grand total of 2gb of ram to
work with. I know I need more, but I'm saving up for a macbook so I
don't want to sink any money into this mini if I don't have to. My point with
that example, though, was that you have to know how the mac works and know all
the tricks to be sure you know what to do when something strange happens.

Re: Deleting audible books in iTunes for Donna

2012-12-03 Thread Steve Holmes
I would also think it better to delete from within iTunes because iTunes does
maintain an internal catalog of your content and that would get out of sync if
you pull out files from under it by other means. I'm not sure if iTunes has a
way to clean itself up or not.

Re: helping a blind friend get technology

2012-12-03 Thread Alex Hall
I don't have a idfferent mac (yet) so can't say for sure. What I can say is
that 2gb is not enough; if you do get the mini, which allows the user to
upgrade the ram, I'd go for the cheapest option and then pick up 8gb of ram,
which can be had for around $40, and pop it in in place of the default ram. I
don't know if that would solve my problems, but I do know that switching to
applications I haven't used in a while takes a long time as they load into ram
from the hard drive, and that big apps like xCode or Garageband take forever to
load. An ssd (solid-state drive) would definitely help too, but ram is the far
cheaper upgrade option at this point.

Re: Apple TV help

2012-12-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

How about I explain a little detail about the Apple TV to clarify:

1. There's no need to connect your Apple TV directly with a USB cable other
than to restore it.
2. Your Apple TV connects either wirelessly via WIFI or with an ethernet cable
in order for it to access content from your computer. There is no way to add
content to this model of Apple TV as it simply accesses all its content from
your Mac's iTunes Library. It has no internal storage at all other than what
is used for the OS.

If your Apple TV 2 does, for whatever reason, require a restore, follow these
steps:

• Unplug all cables fromt he unit.
• Connect a Micro USB-B cable to the Apple TV and the other end to your Mac.
• In iTunes, you should now be able to click the Restore.
• Let it do its Restore and subsequent updates.
• After this has completed, disconnect the USB cable and connect your power and
HDMI connection to your TV.
• Setup your Apple TV including connection to your WIFI or ethernet network and
connection to your Macs iTunes Library.

HTH.

Later...

I experienced this "busy busy busy" thing a while back on a new iMac running

repair from the recovery partition as suggested and there hasn't been a

I am not experiencing these busy busy busy problems. Once in a while, a
particular program will hang and go busy but in most of those cases, it is
stuck doing something like trying to get new mail or like yesterday when I
accidentally told the bookmarks menu to open all 47 bookmarks in separate
tabs. That brought my Mac down to its knees till I killed the process. All
and all, my Mac has performed pretty well even with only 2 GB of RAM.

Screen reader demographics - Was Re: helping a blind friend get technology

2012-12-03 Thread Chris Blouch
For those interested, the WebAIM folks every so often do some survey
research on screen readers. IN amongst the piles of stats is the Primary
Screen Reader breakdown:

http://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey4/#primary

Unsurprisingly, for desktops, Jaws is the leader with 49% but NVDA is #2
with nearly 14%. Voiceover is #5 with 9%. Of course some of this is the
nature of the marketplace where Windows is the dominant platform so
Windows screen readers make up the lion's share of the users. Wikimedia
stats have OSX as 8.5% of the market:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems

In the analysis section of WebAIM's report they note that Jaws has been
sinking from 66% in 2009 and 59% in 2010 but it would seem that many of
those jumped to NVDA as it has risen from just 2.9% in 2009. Of course
there's lots of other interesting data in there but for mobile screen
readers Voicover is way ahead in the #1 spot with 49% followed by Nuance
Talks with 18%

These, in fact, are very sad news for the blind as I understand.
Apple's software continues to be accessible (there is no doubt about
it) but usability is getting worse lately for us.

There is another serious issue in Itunes 11: When you do hundreds of
interactings (those that are needed to navigate the list of tracks of
an album) and then move your Voice Over cursor up and down, you may
want to press Enter in a particular song to play it. If you do, you'll
probably end up listening another song, just the one which has
keyboard focus. I think this should now happen if, like I do, you have
cursor tracking enabled. The only way to play the song that you want
is simply using the arrow keys (instead of the VO commands) to move
through the grid containing the songs of an album. Have you
experienced that?

Re: captcha solving service for the mac.

2012-12-03 Thread Chris Blouch
If you poke through the history on this thread you can find some of my
previous background on captchas but I can give you a short summary of
their purpose here. Basically companies need a way to figure out if you
a person or a computer to ensure you're not some bad actor trying to
create a bunch of bogus accounts for spamming and the like. This is
usually done via a puzzle that is 'easy' for people and 'hard' for
computers to solve. There are two flaws with this. One is that as the
algorithms have become more sophisticated the definition of 'easy' has
moved to 'hard' while only becoming 'harder' for algorithms. This is an
arms race and eventually the puzzles will become too difficult and/or
the algorithms will have too high a success rate to make it useful
anymore. We're starting to reach that point. The second flaw is that you
can hire a mechanical turk service that will farm out whatever tasks you
need done to real people for little money. So the accessible captcha
plugins/services do this for a legitimate reason but that also means bad
actors can do the same thing. In other words, any captcha solution that
costs more than a few cents won't be worth it since the bad guys can
just hire real people to solve them, especially if they protect valuable
content/data. I've actually evaluated a number of captcha solutions and
so far none have worked any better than the garbled audio or swirly
images. Either the puzzle was too hard for people or it was easy for the
algorithm/script. I can elaborate more but suffice it to say, this is a
tough nut to crack.

Subject: captcha solving service for the mac.

Hi guys

Isn't the real question here not about whether captcha solving
services should be free, but why people are allowed to use
inaccessible captchas on their sites in the first place? Personally, I
am sick of the rotten things and don't know how people get away with
using them and their unintelligible so-called audio equivalents.

Perhaps if the cost of captcha solving fell on the heads of those who
included these barriers to accessibility and not to people who can't
see or hear them, they would pretty soon find other solutions that
everyone could use on an equal basis.

I have never had the "need" to use captchas sufficiently explained to
me. There always seem to be other ways of achieving whatever result
the proprietor of the site thinks captchas supply.

Adrienne

(Safari, I'm looking at you and your lack of a flat representation). I
know this is a mac list, and I'm not saying the mac is bad, but when you
can get a reasonably good Windows laptop for $300, or the basic mac laptop
for $1000, and where money is an issue... well, you see where I'm coming
 from I hope.

Audio internet recorder for Windows 7 in Bootcamp

2012-12-03 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi,

sometimes I need to record sounds from Internetexplorer in Windows 7 installed
in Bootcamp on my MacBook Air 2010. On PCs I use Total Recorder for this and it
works just fine. I installed Total Recorder in Windows on my MacBook Air but it
seems not to work in this environment. Windows crashed totally and I had to
recover it completely. To use Audio Hijack in the Mac partition is also not
possible because I need the function on web sides with a flash player and so I
have to use the Internetexplorer.

So can someone recommend a piece of software that works like Total Recorder and
works in Windows 7 in Bootcamp?

Thanks and all the best
Jürgen

If you interact with it and click it with the VO mouse click, and you have the
ClicktoPlugin extension, you can use shortcut keys, such as space for play and
pause, arrow keys for skipping backward and forward, and F for full screen.
Netflix uses it.

Re: Clicking

2012-12-03 Thread Rodney Haynie
It was always my understanding that it was there to help hide how many
keystrokes you type for your password. I do not know why it works like
this one one computer, and does not have the constant clicking on
another.

But with the extra clicking, it is harder for someone else within ear
shot to tell how many keypresses you made to enter your password.

Take care.

If you look in the view menu and hit enter on, show Side bar, you do have
a source list visible. You then can use control-option-j to jump from the
source list to other areas and back. You can also use the VoiceOver web
navigation commands as well, such as VO-command-j or even option-tab.

My suggestion is look at the menus and experiment a bit before you jump to
conclusions. It's certainly different, but I would not call it
"perverted" in the least. Be patient and explore and tinker. We all have
to learn it and find techniques and tips to pass along to one another.

Re: Deleting audible books in iTunes for Donna

2012-12-03 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Okay, maybe I'm missing something here; maybe you want to do something more
than I am thinking but I'm having no problems deleting audible books from
iTunes. I did this on a Mac so if you are talking about iTunes in Windows maybe
this won't help.

i chose books from the pop-up. At first I then chose audiobooks from the radio
buttons but when I interacted I had some trouble making sure I only had one
book selected. Not wanting to accidentally delete all audibooks I then chose
"list" from the radio buttons. But later I was also able to select with the
audiobooks radio button chosen.

In both cases, I did vo-shift-m which brought up a context menu. One of the
choices was "delete". I was asked if I really wanted to delete. In the case of
doing it from "list" only one part of an audiobook was selected but when
deleting using the audiobooks radio button all parts of a book were chosen so
that's why when using the audiobooks radio button and deleting a book with more
than one part you'll be asked if you want to delete the selected audiobooks. I
confirmed that I wanted to delete and was asked if I wanted to keep the files
or move them to trash. I made my choice and the book was deleted.

Hth.

A lot of blind people are stuck with whatever their employer wnts to do.

Re: Audio internet recorder for Windows 7 in Bootcamp

2012-12-03 Thread Chris Blouch
Might be worth trying to do it with a virtual machine. Then the Windows
audio is just another Mac app making sound which you can then record
with your favorite mac audio recorder. In other words, try to move the
problem into the Mac domain and you'll probably be able to solve it easier.

So can someone recommend a piece of software that works like Total Recorder and

Re: how to use external microphone in MacBook Pro? + cheap mixer? where?

2012-12-03 Thread Chris Blouch
Depending on your definition of cheap, you can get a new mackie 402-VLZ3
for about $100

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/mackie-402-vlz3-compact-audio-mixer

Two XLRs with preamps and a stereo 1/4" input, so it's sort of a
three-channel mixer but one of them is stereo. There are 1/4" inputs on
the XLR channels as well along with a separate "Tape In" which is a pair
of RCAs. Just the thing for a nice vocal mic and a few other inputs.
Does have phantom power if you're into condenser mics.

Hi, Alex,

You can go into Mail prefs and choose the "viewing" tab. There's a drop-down

iTunes 11: iCloud button and other issues.

2012-12-03 Thread Daniel Miller
Hello,

Hello,

I just spoke to Apples accessibility department. I let them know of various
iTunes 11 issues, including asking about what that button that simply says
'iCloud' is. They told me it's not really a button you can click, that's
just showing you that you have things stored in iCloud that are available
for download. Can anyone that doesn't have anything stored there confirm
that that's indeed the case?

Also, I reported the issue with VoiceOver not consistently reading the rows
in the artist and albums view for some of you, and they're going to get back
to me by Wednesday with more answers.

I have all headers shown so I can quickly see to whom a message is addressed if

those headers are not in the message text. If I understand you right, this

Hi all. Just wondering if there's any way Max MSP can be made accessible

Re: Deleting audible books in iTunes for Donna

2012-12-03 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Can you explain specifically what happens when you do vo-shift-m? And I know
this is going to sound obvious, but are you interacting with the books table? I
ask that only because at one point I couldn't do vo-shift-m and realized that
while it said the book was selected I wasn't interacting. There has to be a
reason why this is happening and hopefully somebody can get to the bottom of
it. But it can't be that iTunes has been changed not to allow deletion of
audible books or nobody would be able to do it, which I know may not seem very
encouraging at this point. Also, did you try the list radio button instead of
the audiobooks radio button?

2012-12-03 Thread Taylor Scott
I have the exact 180 problem. lol
I'm Using a mac too, when deleting 1 book, (Using the delete key) it
deletes every book from the mac.
Before, I would just open the book I wish to delete, do cmd + A to
select all, then tap the backspace key to delete.
Doing the same steps, all books are sent to the trash. :(
I'm also experencing other weird iTunes11 issues though.

Re: Deleting audible books in iTunes for Donna

2012-12-03 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I wonder if it's because you are not using the list radio button and therefore
all or none of the books are being selected instead of the one you wanted. In
fact, the two of you with opposite problems could both possibly be experiencing
a selection problem. I know that I was having a problem selecting just one
book, or at least being sure I was selecting just one book, when I selected the
audiobooks radio button; when I switched to the "list" radio button I was able
to select one book and know I had done that and then when I switched back to
the audiobooks radio button again the problem I had experienced there was gone.
Just remember that you don't have to choose to send the books to the trash; you
chan choose to keep the files and then go into finder and check that everything
is okay and send them to the trash yourself.

you have a particular radio button selected? I'm assuming your library popup is
on music probably.

Hi, Cheryl. At the moment, I was viewing by Artists, but changed it to Songs.
Until now, the column browser options menu in didn't come up. Thanks.

I like it too, granted, the album grid is a little weird, but, I usually use
song view anyway, I think this interface is much less cluttered than the old 1
and I can get to things a little bit faster.

OK, so I navigate over to Albums and do VO-Space. then I arrow over
to the list of albums, and VO-arrow down to the one I want. I press
VO-Space, and VO says "Album Details. I interact with that, and VO
over to where it says Album tracks. I interact again. There's
obviously a grid there, but all I hear is "Blank, Text".
 Cheers,
 Donna

Yes, it's a lot of interacting, but if you visually think about

I think that's the way it works by default. If you answer a video chat
request Skype will wake up the camera.
