Numbers reports "busy" when working with long spreadsheet

2012-11-18 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

I've searched the archives of googlegroups for the answer but failed to find
one.

My spreadsheet is now over 100 rows long and it is growing. Increasingly,
Numbers has become extremely sluggish, so much so that it is driving me mad.
The constant "busy busy" message, the sluggishness with which I can move from
cell to cell is making me think that I won't be able to use Numbers any more
for the purpose of working with long spreadsheet tables. Is there another
solution? Does anyone else experience the same issue? I've switched off
autocomplete text in cells and it has initially improved the issue but the
longer my spreadsheet becomes, the more impossible it is to use Numbers. I've
tried Tables application but it is even worse so I have to ditch it. Also, with
my spreadsheet having so many rows, it takes ages to arrow up and down the
columns to get to the end of the table in order to enter more data. Adn And
again, when arrowing up and down, Numbers is very slow and eventually Voiceover
gets stuck on one particular cell and keeps repeating its content over and over
again unless I arrow up and down very very slowly.

I'd welcome any suggestions. I'd be reluctant to have to install Fusion but if
this is the only option, I may have to. But then I'd have to buy Ms Office
which is very expensive.

In case it helps, I run Mountain Lion on Macbook Air, 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2
Duo, 4GB RAM, 256 GB solid drive. Does Numbers perform better on newer
machines? I understand I can't add more RAM to my macbook air. It's late 2010
and I have the maximum RAM possible.

Many thanks for any suggestions

Andrew

Re: Numbers reports "busy" when working with long spreadsheet

2012-11-18 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, I've got a 2011 core i5 macbook pro with 8 gb ram and an ssd and all the
issues you reported.
i can sort of get around with the find feature some times, but not always.
IWork hasn't been updated since snow leopard. I'm wondering if it's partly a
compatibility issue with new operating systems.

i tried tables but it will only import excel files. I'm not really very happy
with the way it imported them either. I'll try it again now and see if i can
force it into submission.

Re: Numbers reports "busy" when working with long spreadsheet

2012-11-18 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Andrew,

I tried to duplicate this with a spreadsheet with over 220 rows but did not get
the same result. Granted, your sheet may be more complicated than mine with
more formulas and calculations. Have you tried turning Cursor Tracking off
(fn-VO-shift-f3 when navigating through the sheet? When using this method, you
will need to do an extra step to bring focus back together but it does make the
navigation experience smoother.

With Cursor Tracking Off, there are two basic methods to navigate:

1. Navigate up or down, right or left either with VO keys down (lock them down
with VO-semi-colon if you wish) then bring things back together with
fn-VO-cmd-f4.

2. Use up/down and right/left arrows to navigate around then toggle Cursor
Tracking back on to bring focus back together. You'll need to navigate one
cell away then back again to force the focus together.

Having Cursor Tracking off also allows the fast movement to the end of your
spreadsheet without causing things to go busy.

See if this helps you at all.

Later...

Facebook on the Mac

2012-11-18 Thread Richard Ring
Greetings all,
I am attempting to do something I never thought I'd do, that is, set up a
facebook account. I'm trying this on my Mac book Pro running Mountain Lion with
all updates applied. One thing the page has is a combo box (rather than a popup
button) that you're supposed to use to search for friends. I can't see a way to
use this control. Is anyone using Facebook on the Mac? Not some special Mac
app, just their web site. I'm sorry to clutter the list with this, as it is
rather fundamental in nature. I can't use Facebook, and when people search for
me, they get errors. I don't know how much information one has to add to have a
full fledged account, but aparently, I don't.
Growl.

Highlight the file or folder, and press your enter key. This is the key to keys

hello there,

from my understanding, you completed your account, but is having issues with
that search box which is annoying, correct?
well. here's the deal with that:
it will not read you what you're typing, but it will actually search, so say,
if you type mauricio almeida and either press enter or press the search button,
it will search for mauricio almeida.
then you can just use vo u and navigate through headings to find results.

hope this helps,

When you're focused on the file or folder, hit your return key. This will

Highlight the file or folder, and press your enter key. This is the key to
keys to the Right of the letter L. This will bring you into an edit field,
where you can simply type the new name of the file or folder. Simply
pressing enter again will rename the file or folder. I hope this helps.

Re: Numbers reports "busy" when working with long spreadsheet

2012-11-18 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
Ever since we went to Mountain lion, I have had problems with numbers slowing
down big time on large files. I have Faillone the one thing that helps a
little. I turned the mouse follows voiceover cursor off. I had it on, And I
have found that it makes a difference. Maybe I should see what happens if I
turn cursor tracking off as well, and see if that makes it even better.

2012-11-18 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I don't know if this'll help or not, but there is a way to enter data into
numbers with TextEdit. I do this a fair amount. You can do this by putting
carriage returns to separate the Rose, and separate columns with the . So let's
say we have three columns and four rows that we want to make entries for. After
you get into TextEdit typing in the first entry for column one. Press the tab
key and type in the entry for column 2, press the again type the entry and
for column 3. Then press the carriage return to go back to column 1 keep doing
this and two you have all your data put it. Then select all your text, copy to
the clipboard, and going to numbers. Put your cursor where you want To start
putting in your data. Press option down arrow to add in the number of rows
you're going to meet. Then making sure your cursor is in the right starting
position paste what you just got from TextEdit. Right now, Numbers doesn't seem
to be having problems with pasted text. I have only had problems when I try to
type it in. I hope this helps

Re: Numbers reports "busy" when working with long spreadsheet

2012-11-18 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I just thought of something else, but some other person on this list is going
to have to help you to do it if my ideas any good. Would it be possible to put
lion or Snow Leopard also on your Mac so that you could run your numbers
program on one of them instead? In my case, I could go to the App Store and
download again Lion. I don't think you have to pay again to do that. If I
continue to have problems with numbers and it gets worse, I may have to do that
myself.

Re: Numbers reports "busy" when working with long spreadsheet

2012-11-18 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, I'm revisiting tables. I think I might buy it. It's tediously slow, but
I can press command shift A and bring up a go to range dialog which is similar
to the one in excel. Then I can type the cell I want to visit, even if it's 80
or 100 rows down the table and I will eventually get there. I turned on the
accessibility features in tables but I'm not sure they make a difference.

I'm really clammering here. I've relied on spreadsheeting to run my business
for 3 years and since open office is now pooched, there hasn't been a single
decent solution for mac.

I'm planning to buy tables just for the convenience of jumping to a cell by
co-ordinates which I can't off hand see how to accomplish in numbers.

Unable to install Adobe Flash Player

2012-11-18 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

Whenever I try to install the latest update of Flash Player, I get an
error stating that the install failed.
I checked in the console and got the following error :"Installer:
CoreAnimation: warning, deleted thread with uncommitted
CATransaction; set CA_DEBUG_TRANSACTIONS=1 in environment to log
backtraces."

I don't have a clue about what this means; I can barely make out that
it is in English. :)
So, any suggestions, please?

Mail Busy ...

2012-11-18 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I have 16GB of RAM and still frequently get Mail busy messages. The RAM upgrade
did help reduce iTunes busy and Safari busy messages, however.

If you're thinking of upgrading your RAM, which I generally think is a good
idea, I'd recommend monitoring your RAM use with Activity Monitor app which can
be found in the utilities folder. Check how much free memory you have when
first loading Mac OS X, and then whenever you're running programs that seem to
be running slowly, or when you have lots of apps and windows open, and then
after Mac OS X has been running for a while but no apps or windows (except for
the desktop and background programs) are running. If you find your system is
running slowly when you have little or no free RAM, I guess that's a good
indication that you could use an upgrade. If, however, you're not using your
current RAM to it's full capacity, then you probably don't need to upgrade.

Perhaps try pressing command-backspace? If that doesn't work, try Command-X.

Re: Facebook on the Mac

2012-11-18 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Richard. Another site to use Facebook is m.facebook.com. I find it far more
accessible than the regular Facebook site and that combo box you speak of to
search for contacts isn't there. A normal edit box is there. You may find it a
little inaccessible but there is a remedy to that. Go to your Safari
preferences with command comma and in the toolbar, select the advanced button.
Then select the option, show develop menu in menubar. Check that and close the
preferences. Then activate the menu bar with VO+M and go to the new develop
menu. Go down to the user agent submenu and press the right arrow. At this
point, I recommend Firefox 11 for Mac so press F and you'll hear that. Press
enter and there you go. The mobile facebook site is accessible. HTH.

Having a small issue with Voxer

2012-11-18 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Does anyone know with the Voxer ap for the IPhone how to clear messages out
of your chat list? I used to could symply double tap on the message, then
double tap in the upper right corner of the screen to open the chat settings
for that conversation, then in there could find delete chat. Now, the only
things I see are to block, which I obviously don't wanna do, I can mark all
as read, or can delete all messages within the individual chat. With the
latest update, I'm not finding any way at all to actually delete the whole
chat entirely after I either compose it, or after someone else voxers me.
It's kind of aggervating, as I have a lot of people who's chat I've gotten
opened over time, seeing that I'm a huge Voxer fan.

Re: Mail Busy ...

2012-11-18 Thread Anne Robertson
I hardly ever get Mail busy messages. I have a MacBook Air running Mountain
Lion with 4 gb of RAM and a 128 gb SSD. I have 8 mail accounts and tens of
thousands of messages distributed among around 100 or so mailboxes. I have Mail
in classic view without the preview pane.

I did a clean install of Mountain Lion, importing my data from a Time Machine
backup. I regularly repair permissions and reinitialise the PRAM every couple
of weeks or so.

I normally have between three and six apps running but with only a window or
two each.

Cheers,

Numbers reports "busy" when working with long spreadsheet

2012-11-18 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear tim, Erik and Gigi,

Thank you for such prompt responses.

Tim, I've tried working with the cursor tracking off. Things have improved
somewhat for which I'm grateful but the second method you've described seems to
be slightly better. Navigating with Vo+arrow does not seem to work very well at
all. It's easier to work with just arrow keys having untethered cursor tracking
which I have on by default. I'm not sure whether mouse cursor following
voiceover cursor has any significance or not. Even with your method, my Macbook
air seems to run very hot as soon as I start working in Numbers. Also, when
entering text, Voiceover says busy. It is however an improvement, uncoupling
cursor tracking. The odd thing is that I can jump to the first cell of my
spreadsheet with vo+command+fn+left arrow and then by take keyboard cursor to
voiceover cursor with vo+command+f4 and then turning cursor tracking on. But
when I want to do the opposite, i.e. go to the end of my spreadsheet, things
get impossible. I am placed below the end of the last data entry but I cannot
seem to be able to navigate up the rows of entries, only within the row, i.e.
to the side, and then the fan kicks in like mad again.

Thanks again, my friends, for trying. I don't quite know what the answer for
the future is. It is beginning to worry me exceedingly. I need to use a
spreadsheet programme to calculate various bits of information as well as keep
related records. So I have two tables going, both of which will ultimately have
to be around 150 row long.

Erik is reconsidering Tables application. I have had great hopes for it.
Indeed, initially the developer was very sympathetic but with Mountain Lion
Tables app has become less responsive. It has an impressive ability to jump to
the beginning of row and end of row, top and bottom of column, jump to a
particular cell, selecting a number of cells etc. But it has become so sluggish
that I cannot use it with the long spreadsheets I have. It's a great shame.

With best wishes

Andrew

So, can someone show me how to actually add something to Passbook? I see
that the Apple store is one of the apps which it supports. I most certainly
do have the Apple Store app on my phone. Are you kidding me? If you've not
tried it, you should. It works fantasticly! I do have a coupon for the
Apple Store. No no, not the ITunes store. I mean specifically the Ajpple
Store. I'd love to put it in my Passbook if someone who may be a bit more
familiar can teach me how to.

Hi,

It's a place for storing passes, like airport passes and movie and
starbucks
cards etc. It's very accessible but you have to download the apps that
work

with it by going to the link that says appstore in the passbook app. I'm
never used it myself but I've heard it works well and you never have to
worry about losing or forgetting cards again.

So, ever since I upgraded to I O S 6, I've seen this thing on my home
screen
called Passbook. So what exactly is this thing, and does it work well
with

Voiceover? Unless I'm just stupid, it doesn't seem to be very accessible.
It looks like something for keeping your personal data like credit cards
etc. I can't seem though to figure it out.

Thank you kindly,

You can only put it in from an email, if you bought it digitally within the
last week or so. I'm not sure you can add physical paper coupons to passbook

Thank you kindly,

Re: Bookmark bar in Safari

Hi.
Thanks for the help, but I think I am still missing something. I found the
table, which has listings for history, bookmarks bar and bookmarks menu. But
no matter how I interact with these listings I do not get the second table
you mentioned.
I would also like to delete a few of the bookmarks in my bookmarks menu, but
again, I cannot find any way to do this.
Thanks.

Re: 1Password

Hello,
After installing the appstore version, you should only have to point the app
to your dropBox 1password file and all should work.

Hi everyone,
I have a trial version of 1Password and want to purchase the app from the
App store. I have entered quite a bit of information into the trial
version. What is the best way to upgrade to a full license

? I do sink with Dropbox with the 1Password iOS app on my iPhone.
I'm not sure if I should delete the app from my Mac before purchasing from
the App store or will the app be upgraded to a full license if I leave the
trial version of 1Password on my Mac without deleting.

Thanks for suggestions.

Re: Mail Busy ...

Hello Max,

The PRAM is the Parameter RAM. You reinitialise it by shutting down the
computer, then holding down the Command, Option, letter R and letter P keys and
pressing the Power key. Keep the four keys held down until you've heard the
start up chime four times, then release them.

Cheers,

Anne
