I hardly ever get Mail busy messages. I have a MacBook Air running Mountain Lion with 4 gb of RAM and a 128 gb SSD. I have 8 mail accounts and tens of thousands of messages distributed among around 100 or so mailboxes. I have Mail in classic view without the preview pane.
I did a clean install of Mountain Lion, importing my data from a Time Machine backup. I regularly repair permissions and reinitialise the PRAM every couple of weeks or so. I normally have between three and six apps running but with only a window or two each.
