Re: Barcode scanner?

2012-11-05 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Gail
Welcome to the list yourself. I meant to Seeing Eye twice since we were in
class together. My current dog, Elana, is
9 Years old now. How have you been these days?

I recognized your email immediately.
My dog was real sick last August, she had liver problems. However, after going
into a critical care place, she got better. It appears that it hasn't hurt her
at all, but she has to eat special food. She is on a diet called GD which
stands for geriatric diet. I didn't know they made one of those.
I had heard of everything else like heart diet kidney diet et cetera.
Please let me Know how things are going for you these days.
My current dog, by the way, is a Labrador/golden cross. She could pass for
yellow lab.
Some people however, think that she is a golden retriever. Go figure. My vet
however thought that she was a purebred lab until I told him otherwise.

Try pressing control-f to bring up the app. It runs in the menu bar so
that's probably why you can't see it.

I do not find it hard to use on Windows. But you may want to contact
them and ask them to make their site more accessible. sometimes a
request will go a long way.

On 11/4/2012 08:51 PM, Christopher-Mark Gilland wrote:

got an unauthorized page when I tried to go to the link they provided
to direct me to my downloads. When I clicked the link to reset my
password, nothing at all happened. Finally, I wound up having to
manually go to the link they gave me in the initial e-mail to reset
the password. Once I reset it to something I knew, I got no
confirmation on the page that it was successful. I just had to trust
it worked. Finally, once I started downloading the zip file of my

which for a 100 something odd meg file, is utterly crap! I should be

God help me!, if the interface to input my license isn't accessible.
We'll find out.

I listened to a few. Personally I find them a bit choppy and not
as smooth as the voices you can get with the mac by default.
Still, synthesized speech is one of the most subjective things in
the blindness community, so to each their own, I say.

On a practical note, I had trouble getting the sound files to
play. I had to interact with the link for the sample, then
vo-right to the actual link (not the image), route the mouse with
vo-cmd-f5, and click with vo-shift-space. Sometimes I could just
right click and select download file, but that didn't work much of
the time.

Cereproc. Well, for those of you that wish there were more
alternatives besides Nuance, Cepstral, and Acapela, these same
Cereproc voices for the Android are also available for the Mac. I
went to their website to see how good these voices sound and, in
my opinion, they beat both Nuance and Acapela. They are really
good! As a matter of fact, if I can't, ahem, find a torrent for
them, I'm thinking of buying a few of them. The price is pretty
affordable, about $42 US. I don't know how much that converts to
in Canadian dollars, but I really like them and want to get them.
So thanks Mike for introducing me to these voices. To see how
well these voices sound, go to http://www.cereproc.com/en/osxvoices

Re: using the braille pen 12

2012-11-05 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Chenelle.
one thing you will probably need to become familiar with on the
braille pen is the rotor commands. These come in handy if you ever
need to edit what you've typed. This is because the only way to
advance the cursor with the Braille Pen is to move the rotor. space
with dots 2-3 and space with dots 5-6 will cycle you through the
different options that you can navigate by. Then, to move to the next
element that the rotor is set to, such as the next character, press
psace with dot 6. Space with dot 3 will move you to the previous
character. To select something (the same as the double tap on the
touch screen), press space with dots 3-6.

Hope this helps,
Scott

These sound very good. Is there an option to purchase more than one voice at a

Re: Picking the brains of you Mac veterans

2012-11-05 Thread Mike Arrigo
If that's a power PC laptop, 10.5 is as far as it will go. Starting
with snow leppard, it only works on Intel processors. Yes, voiceover
has come a long way since then. Actually, I think snow leppard was the
biggest set of improvements. That's when the track pad commander, table
reading, web spots, and probably several other features were introduced
that I'm foregetting at the moment.

Original message:
I got a new power adaptor and a new battery and this puppy is running
like a champ with Leopard. I'm wondering if it is upgradable to Snowy.
I'll have to check that tomorrow on the Apple Support pages. How far
VoiceOver has come since 10.5 is utterly amazing. It puts things into
perspective for sure. For those of you who complain about what's wrong
with Mountain Lion, try working with Leopard and see how much Apple
accessibility has done with the product since then.

Yes it is really cool how some of these older Macs just keep slugging

Re: Infovox iVox adds genuine children's voices to OS X

2012-11-05 Thread Esther
Hi All,

You can find samples of the new voices at the Assistiveware Infovox
product page for demoing voices:
http://www.assistiveware.com/product/infovox-ivox/voices

The fastest way to navigate to the links for the new child voices is
to use item chooser (VO-I) and type in "boy" or "girl". Alternatively,
you can navigate to "English - American English" and find the new
voices for "Josh (boy)" and "Ella (girl)", and then navigate to
"English - British English" and find "Rosie (girl)" and "Harry
(boy)". Just VO-Space on the links to play the samples.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

mac restarted again...

2012-11-05 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I have been in windows since Thursday. I booted back into osx yesterday and
things were fine. I left this morning for a couple hours and came back to find
my mac had, once again, restarted itself. I did the power cord trick suggested
last week and had no problems until now, though, as I said, I was in windows
for a few days. This isn't looking good... To remind you all, it's a 2011 Mini
with 2gb ram in a cool room. I have no Apple Care, and the nearest Apple store
is about two and a half hours away.

Keep reparing your permissions until it shows no errors.
You restart your ram by holding down: p, r, command and option right after you
hear the start up chime. Keep holding those keys until the chime has heard the
third time, and release the keys and it will boot up.

Re: mac restarted again...

2012-11-05 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Well, if Windows doesn't reboot and still stayed up and useable, one would
think it would be a software or setting problem on your Mac side rather than a
power supply problem. But I seem to remember that you've checked all your
settings and maybe you reinstalled the Mac side too but I don't remember that
for sure. The only thing I can think of, short of taking it somewhere, would be
to completely reinstall everything - Mac, Windows, etc. and reinstall it all.
But I know that's not a welcome suggestion given that one still has to have
help to install Windows from a sighted person. Is there anything that you use
or have plugged in when using the Mac side that you don't for the Windows side?
Of course, it could be something on your logic board; I don't know if that
would also affect both sides or not.

still no luck with Audible.com

2012-11-05 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Tried Betos suggestion of uninstalling and reinstalling the Audible App, but
still am not able to sign in to the mobile store? Beto, what exactly did you
do? Do you have the latest version of the app? I ask because now you cannot
enter the store directly from the app, so I'm confused about why uninstalling
would fix the problem. Appreciate any thought/experiences anyone can pass
along.
Best,

Re: mac restarted again...

2012-11-05 Thread Alex Hall
I'm about to reset the PRam, so we'll see if that helps. As to your questions,
I have not reinstalled anything, and there is nothing different (in hardware)
when I run windows. Besides, I have it set to not come on after a power
failure, so if it were a power problem it would just shut down and not restart
with a problem report. Of course I'd rather not reinstall everything
(*shudders*) but if the problem persists I may have to. At least it wouldn't
cost me anything.

Re: External Blu Ray DVD/CD CDR or CDRW

2012-11-05 Thread Marc Rocheleau
So um... no one has any recommendations at all? I don't mean to be a
pest about it but I really need this for my iMac and have no clue
where to start. As mentioned in previous messages, I am looking for an
optical drive with Blu ray and CD read/write capability. I am assuming
any device that can read/write blue ray can do normal DVDs just fine
too?

Any help would still be grately appreciated.

You can't get to the Audible store from the mobile ap.

Remember that your Audible signin is now your Amazon.com signin.

Right, the problem isn't that I'm not using the correct sign-in info, it's that
I can't access the fields to enter my username and password.

[Maccessibility] Infovox iVox adds genuine children’s voices to OS X

2012-11-05 Thread Maccessibility
Title: [Maccessibility] Infovox iVox adds genuine children’s voices to OS X
Maccessibility has posted a new item, 'Infovox iVox adds genuine children’s voices to OS X'

Amsterdam, November 5, 2012 – Today AssistiveWare® and Acapela Group announced the release of Infovox iVox 3.1, which brings the first four genuine, natural-sounding children’s voices to Mac OS X. In addition, the update adds three new male voices. These voices work with any Mac application, including Apple’s VoiceOver, TextEdit, Preview, Safari, Adobe’s [...]

Re: Infovox iVox adds genuine children's voices to OS X

2012-11-05 Thread Esther
Hi All,

Just to add to the previous post, you can also hear samples of the new
U.S. Micah voice and the new Australian Tyler voice if you navigate
through the other entries at the Infovox sample voices page. However,
the background for developing more children's voice offerings that
appear in this version 3.1 Infovox release is Assistiveware's work
with providing voices for autistic children and other children with
speech disabilities. This is another instance where iOS devices and
apps have provided more portable and far more affordable solutions to
individuals with disabilities. Here are the (shortened) links to the
earlier development page (that includes other links to the voices with
different speech samples):
• A groundbreaking project: two authentic British children's voices
http://bitly.com/L0gk9t
• A groundbreaking project part two: two authentic American children's
voices

Re: External Blu Ray DVD/CD CDR or CDRW

2012-11-05 Thread Esther
Hello Marc,

I don't use Blu-ray drives on my Mac, but if I were looking for such a
drive and wanted to ensure compatibility with my Mac, I'd check Other
World Computing, and either buy directly from them, or check what
standard products in this category they offer. You should not assume
that external burners will automatically be recognized in your Mac
applications in the same manner that native drives are. OWC has a
history of checking out and supporting these functions on the Mac. A
Google search of "owc bluray" brought up this link:
http://eshop.macsales.com/search/external+blu+ray

You can probably follow up with direct queries to OWC. And there are
likely list users who use DVD and Bluray devices who can help you more
with specifics.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: still no luck with Audible.com

2012-11-05 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Okay, i've done this just now and will tell you what to do step by step.

1. Go to audible.com.
2. Tap "visit the mobile store
3. Tap the sign in to audible link.
4. If you see a "return to webpage" link or button, tap that. If instead you
see an address with signin.htm on the end but don't see form fields for your
username and password, tap reload. i'm giving both instructions because it
seems to vary. I'm sure there are reasons for the variance but don't have time
to sort that out now.
5. Now you should see the form fields and should be able to sign in. I did this
successfully.

If this still doesn't work for you, email and explain what you are seeing on
the page and what step youare on and I'll try to clarify.

Are you saying you can't sign in to the store or the app? To get to the

Hi all,

Tried Betos suggestion of uninstalling and reinstalling the Audible App, but
still am not able to sign in to the mobile store? Beto, what exactly did
you do? Do you have the latest version of the app? I ask because now you
cannot enter the store directly from the app, so I'm confused about why
uninstalling would fix the problem. Appreciate any thought/experiences

Re: Infovox iVox adds genuine children's voices to OS X

2012-11-05 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I haven't had the chipmunk bug. I use Heather and Ryan constantly and really
like them. I've also used some of the Spanish and British voices. In fact, I
almost never use any of the Apple voices; even have the login screen set up for
an infovox voice.

You could do the startup option under system preferences.

without passing through router?

2012-11-05 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi,

Just wondering if it is possible to connect 2 macs on a wired network directly
with a cable. THe router is very far away from both to be close to the dsl plug
on the wall. I thought that just connecting with a cable should do it since I
did this with pc for migration assistent.
If it is indeed possible, how do I make sure the connection works and is it
slower than passing through a router?

Thanks for your help.

Best,

Ioana

Blueray drive suggestions for Marc

2012-11-05 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Marc,

I'm sorry I can't be of more help. I once had a DVD/CD reader/writer. I can't
remember the name of it. But it wasn't blueray. My best advice is to try a site
called:
http://www.newegg.com

Here is the page with the blueray drives on Newegg.com:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=17595&IsNodeId=1&Description=blueray
 drives&name=External CD / DVD / Blu-Ray Drives&Order=BESTMATCH I would
recommend if you have the budget for it the LG which is the first one on that
page. My father-in-law has an LG DVD recorder, and it's awesome. Not the same
as this one, because his is a video to DVD recorder, but it's amazing. I have
been a customer of NewEgg's for years and have always been happy with the
service. I am not affiliated with this company in any way, in the interest of
full disclosure and honesty. I hope this helps you.

Musically,
Allison

Harry, this is genius. This worked perfectly. I still don't know why Safari

To show the develop menu in the menu bar, go to the Preferences dialog from the
Safari menu. Select the Advanced tab and you will find the option to show the

Re: boot camp

2012-11-05 Thread Alex Hall
You might want to look at the Refit boot manager. Using this, I am able to
simply press the power button without holding down anything, then press m for
mac or w for windows a second after I hear the startup chime. I had sighted
help installing this, and it was over a year ago so I don't remember the exact
procedure, but google should be able to tell you more than you need to know.

RE: boot camp

2012-11-05 Thread Missy Hoppe
That sounds overly complicated to me. You can go into system preferences and
set which os you want to boot into by default.
If you want a different one, hold down the option key while powering on your
machine. Then, hold down the option key for
about 10-15 seconds. You will be in a list of things you can boot from. All you
need to do, assuming your set-up is fairly
basic, is arrow to the 1 you want. For example, if you boot into windows by
default, you'd left arrow once to boot from your
main mac OSX drive. Right arrow once would take you to the recovery partician.
If you boot by default into OSX, pressing
right arrow once will let you boot into windows, and pressing right arrow twice
will take you to the recovery partician.
One final note: after making your selection, you need to press enter. This
method should work great, but to set whichever
mode you want to be your default, system preferences and then startup disc
would be your best bet.
Good luck, and I hope this helps!
Missy

Touch keyboard on iPad not working

2012-11-05 Thread David Hole
Hi folks.

I know there are lots of knowledge in here, and I hope there are
someone here who can help me out with the following issue.
I have a friend who have an iPad 3rd gen, wich she updated to iOS6.
After the update, she couldn't write mail, since when she doubletapped
on the text field in the body of the mail, the keyboard popped up, but
it was greyed out.
This only happens when writing mail, and when VoiceOver is turned
on.Any ideas of what that could be, and how this can be solved?

Thanks in advance.

Re: boot camp

2012-11-05 Thread Alex Hall
I'm not sure how Refit is complicated. Pressing one button seems much more
straightforward than holding a key for fifteen seconds, arrowing and not being
able to be sure which drive you are on, and pressing enter. The setup process
was not complicated, as I recall; I mostly had a sighted person help because it
was only my second day with a mac and I was not sure what I was doing with it.
I still have the refit dmg if you can't find it.

Voiceover Jumping Around in Contacts on iPhone 3GS

2012-11-05 Thread Harry Hogue
Hi everyone,

I just wondered if anyone else noticed VoiceOver jumping around in the contact
on the iPhone? It started happening the other day, and after updating to IOS 6
it still seems to happen. The letter before each group of contacts beginning
with that name will jump. For example, it might say J, then give a namelike
Centurylink, for example. I think it sorts the names by looking at the last
name, even though it lists them first name/last name, since under the "Y's" it
has names of people starting with both B and S with the last names starting
with Y. It's confusing and doesn't make much sense to me. I'm not sure what I
might have done to cause this random behavior.

Thanks,

Harry

a little stuck updating Infovox

2012-11-05 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Okay,

Like, I don't get it. I opened the Infovox Ivoice manager figuring I could
update from there. No such luck. All the items in the menus seemed to be
grayed out. I guess maybe I needed to log in first, but, forgot my password.
So, when I went on the site to request a new password, the page came back and
told me that my e-mail address was not recognized. I'm honestly about to
remove all this because it seems to me like updating this here is more trouble
than it's worth.

Re: a little stuck updating Infovox

2012-11-05 Thread Cheryl Homiak
No the greyed-out stuff is because you are in a preliminary window which gives
you a link to the website and explains something about the voice manager. I
think if you uncheck open at startup you won't get that window the next time
you open the voice manager. But for now, close that window and you will be in
the voices manager. Then in the menus go to check for updates. You'll get a
warning that the voices manager is running and needs to quit for the update
(not exact words). This morning i just did continue and I don't think it
updated. This afternoon I actually quit the manager and then it updated. You
have to watch with this program though because at least in my experience there
were some alert windows that came up and I didn't see them until I used my
window chooser to check.

The reason it worked for you without any problem was that you didn't have that

Re: boot camp

2012-11-05 Thread Phil Halton
yes, you can go to preferences/startup disk and in the scroll area, select
bootcamp as the startup disk. Then follow the prompts to reboot. Windows
will boot without having to choose it from the list of OS. Then, if while in
windows, you want to reboot into MAC OS X, select that option from the
bootcamp entry in the system tray. OSX will boot without choosing from the
OS list.

New Voices Giving Me Demo Messages

2012-11-05 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi guys. I just installed the new Infovox Ivox voice Will a while ago and for
some reason, here and there I keep getting the message "This is an evaluation
version of Acapela Group's Text To Speech synthesizer." I am on the internet
which is one of the requirements of any demo voice so I don't know why I keep
getting this nag message. This happens with both Voiceover and Growl. I'm
currently using him with Chromevox, Google's screen reader and the nag message
doesn't happen there so I don't get why I'm getting it with anything else. I'm
using Infovox Ivox 3.1 on a Macbook running OS X Mountain Lion. Thanks.

Re: all well with Infovox update.

2012-11-05 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Well, this is kind of strange. I downloaded Ella and started the demo. I was
promptly warned that the demo voices require an Internet connection and to make
sure I'm connected to the internet when the voice is being used. That's all
very good and well! But what if your Internet goes down, unbeknowns to you,
while running the demo? In the past, if a trial period ran out or for some
reason you reinstalled on your computer and didn't have the license in on a
voice, it would repeat its introductory sentences and I think maybe say
something about not being installed ad infinitum while you tried to manage to
navigate to voiceover utility and change the voice. That wouldn't be very
pleasant if that's the way it still works so I don't know if I want to use a
demo voice and be stuck trying to fix a problem. It used to be that the demos
had a time limit but you weren't required to be connected to the Internet to
use them if I recall correctly.

Re: Touch keyboard on iPad not working

2012-11-05 Thread Lisette Wesseling
I've had this happen when a bluetooth keyboard is also paired with the iPad.
You can't have both a bluetooth keyboard connected and also use the onscreen
keyboard. I have sometimes forgotten my bluetooth keyboard is connected so I
know how easy that is to do.
This may not be the problem but it's worth having your friend check no other
external keyboard is connected.

Re: New Voices Giving Me Demo Messages

2012-11-05 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Did you reboot after installing? When i first installed Ella and Will, when I
tried to change to their voices in voiceover utility, they would speak their
introduction and then revert to Alex, whom I don't have set to do anything. i
decided I had to reboot and since doing that I can change to either of the demo
voices with no problem and so far I haven't gotten any of the nag messages. I
do not have growl on my computer.

mac restarted again, despite all the fixes

2012-11-05 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I was at my desk, reading a book on my apex, when I heard my mac give the
startup chime. It had restarted, just hours after the last time this happened
(sometime around 10:00 this morning, and it's now about 7:30). I have repaired
disk permissions, and there were no errors. I have reset my PRam. I have pulled
out the power cord for the recommended time. As I said before, when I am in
windows this does not happen, which tells me this is probably not a hardware
problem with the Mini. If there's anything else I can try, please let me know.
Yes, re-installing OSX may have to happen, but I'm hoping for a less drastic
solution that does not involve wiping my drive before I resort to that step,
especially as I have no one whom I would trust to help with a bootcamp/windows
install at the moment. If I did have to reformat, I'd probably forego windows
for a while, but I would want it back eventually simply to play audio games.
Fusion or Virtualbox may be coming to a mac near me relatively soon... Anyway,
thanks for your continued suggestions.

Have a great day,

Re: mac restarted again...

2012-11-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It doesn't seem like a hardware issue to me if you had Windows running without
any similar issues. Therefore, I believe that taking it to an Apple Store
would be a waste financially. My nearest Apple Store is about a 5 hour drive
so its not usually in the cards for us either.

It does, then, sound like a software issue. I do suggest, though, for
troubleshooting purposes that you install the OS onto an external HD. This
problem seems to happen quite often so maybe if you let the Mini run off the
external OS all night and check on it in the morning to see if it has
restarted. If you leave it logged in when you go to bed, and have it set to
not log in automatically, then it will be sitting at the login screen if it
restarted itself overnight.

Give that a try then we can go from there.

Good to know, that makes this easier. What happens to my user data, such as

format the osx partition and reinstall everything?

Okay, I'll put ml on a thumb drive and see what happens. I've never done this

Re: mac restarted again, despite all the fixes

2012-11-05 Thread Cheryl Homiak
The only thing is: if you want to do a restore instead of a clean install, even
of just the Mac side, you want to be sure that whatever is causing the problem
just doesn't get reinstalled or set again. So if it were me, I would lean to
erasing the Mac partition and clean installing instead of any kind of restore.
Then you can maybe troubleshoot what causes the problem if it starts happening
again.

I had a weird issue with mail and i did a clean install and it fixed it all.
I always would recognmend doing a clean install when doing a large update aka

infovox nag messages and new voices

2012-11-05 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I just got a nag message. They must be occasional reminders.

I like Ella but she can't keep up with my typing like Heather and Ryan can and
she sounds like she's kind of going to have throat strain from trying to
enunciate clearly. It's something in her pitch; I may have to play with it a
little bit. Glad I haven't bought yet; I like Will so far but I don't know if
i'll come to like him as well as Heather and Ryan. If I keep Ella, she won't be
my default voice.

Re: question about hotspots

2012-11-05 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi Anne,

Did I understand correctly that for you hotspots are remembered within the
application? I find on my mac that, if I set a hotspot in one app and then
change apps, it returns me to the first app. To have 10 hotspots in each app I
have to save them in activities.

Thanks for clarifying this for me.

Re: mac restarted again, despite all the fixes

2012-11-05 Thread Alex Hall
Good point. Once I get my Carbonite transferred over to the mac I'll feel
better about all this. As you both said, a clean install makes the most sense
for troubleshooting purposes, so, if it comes to that, I'll do it. Now I'm
waiting for ML to download from the app store, and am searching for an 8gb
drive of some kind. I wonder, though, Once I make this bootable drive, how do I
work it? The articles I've found seem to indicate that one can boot it or
install the os from it, and I want to make sure I do the former and not the
latter.

I downloaded an app called Lion Disk Maker but have not run it yet as it
requires the ML installer and a suitable drive. Is this Super Duper program
free or paid?

Please help with extracting audio from AVI file

2012-11-05 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi all,

I have a .avi file and would like to just extract the audio part.
I tried opening it in Amadeus light or in garage band and get an error that
quicktime cannot play it. VLC can and I found some kind of export setting there
but don't quite understand how it works. Even if I did though I am not sure
what encoding settings to choose to be able to extract audio.

Thanks for your help.

Ioana

Please check out my cd on www.ioanagandrabur.com on iTunes and most online

Re: infovox nag messages and new voices

2012-11-05 Thread Traci
Since rebooting, I haven't received the nag msg. I actually hadn't received it
with Josh, but was getting it with Will.

I'm really enjoying Will. Josh is fun to have around, but he wouldn't be my
default. Kind of like having Charlie Brown speaking my computer. :)

Traci, Lol, and none of them can pronounce Traci.
