Unlabeled Buttons in Newsrack?

2012-10-06 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

There are a number of unlabeled buttons in the Newsrack newsreader. Does anyone
know what they are?

Thanks,
Teresa

Re: Boot Camp and 10.8.2

2012-10-06 Thread Phil Halton
Harry, I'm pretty sure you'll have to actually "install" windows during the
bootcamp process. Having it as a VMWare machine won't work for you there. I
went through the whole bootcamp thing yesterday and it worked great. Now,
I'm thinking of going the VMWare route. Can you tell me if it is easy to
install windows via VMWare without sighted assistance?

Is VO up and talking through the process?

Hi, that's good to know that it doesn't cost money. I don't regret using
VMware Fusion, since times call for having both operating systems running at
the same time, but it's nice to know that this alternative option is also
available. if I have Windows already installed via a virtual machine, would
I have to reinstall it, do you know?

Thanks.

You can read the installation and setup pdf for bootcamp to get familiar
with the steps involved. And, for the windows7 install, I found a
detailed, step-by-step guide for installing windows7 on Black Viper's
website

www.blackviper.com

search his site for windows 7 install.

I'll no doubt be crowing about my new windows7 machine, or asking
frantically for help and advice, depending whether it goes well or badly
tomorrow.

P.S. if you want a microsoft word document of the bootcamp setup and
installation guide I can send it to you via email - contact me offlist
for that doc.

Subject: Boot Camp and 10.8.2

Hi all,

I was wondering how hard it is to install Boot Camp, if it costs money,
and if it is worth it if i already ache VMware Fusion. Waht are the
advantages/disadvantages? would it make the Windows side of my computer
faster/more efficient to be running without the Mac portion running at
the same time, for example? I know others ahve provided instructions, so
I could search for those threads, if instructions were provided about the
best way to search the mail archives, as I don't know.

Also, my other question has to do with 10.8.2. I wondered, since I know
some of you ahve had issues with Voiceover in 10.8.2, owudl yo urecommend
I upgrade from 10.8.1? I am really wanting to improve my Spanish skills,
but my Voiceover defaults to English each time I restart to English even
though my system in in Spanish. I would install 10.8.2 in Spanish to
avoid this, but don't want to make VoiceOver unreliable if 10.8.2 is
still pretty buggy.

Thanks for any help, and I hope this is all clear, being unrelated as
both portiosn of the post are.

Regards,

harry

Re: Boot Camp and 10.8.2

2012-10-06 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Did you have sighted assistance while going through the boot camp thingie
yesterday? My guess is that you got to a point in the windows installation
where it came time to do the actual install of windows and you needed sighted
help because no windows audio drivers were loaded yet. Is that pretty much
right?

I ain't done it myself, but, many have. I believe it to be completely possible
because of the way it works.  Voice Over won't guide you through the process;
but, still, it can be done. My advice, however, is not to listen to me but to
others who have actually done it.

So What Are the New Features In Mail?

2012-10-06 Thread Teresa Cochran
I just updated OS X and noticed that the Mail app seems to want to reconfigure
itself. It also indicates that there are "new features". Anyone discovered what
these are? By the way, I haven't noticed any major changes to the interface.

Thanks,

RE: Boot Camp and 10.8.2

2012-10-06 Thread Tommy Craig
If you already have Windows installed via bootcamp, you can then install VM
Fussion and just point to the boot camp partition as your virtual machine.
You don't have to reinstall Windows. Unfortunately this does not work the
other way around. You can not use a virtual machine that has already been
set up on a boot camp partition.

Okay. Here's a tip. Drop Box will not present itself as a download; Rather,
you will notice a button on the page that says "install" that you press. this

Re: Boot Camp and 10.8.2

2012-10-06 Thread Mauricio Almeida
hello phil,

when I did it was pretty straight forward, but there is a detail to watch out.

if you install it and use quick install, which is what I did, there will be a
loint when you will press the finish button.
This does to mean your windows is installed, so if you take the cd out right
there you're messed up and will need to start it all again.
after you press the finish button, ask a sighted person to peer at your screen
to tell you when it is actually done.
the only thing they will actually do though is install your first screen reader
on windows. as far os installing vmware will do it all.

thanks

Re: Boot Camp and 10.8.2

2012-10-06 Thread Phil Halton
Ray, Yes, I had sighted assistance.

I found a fairly tech competent person who had a few hours to kill and it took
us 2 hours from start to finish.

That's from the time I started bootcamp assistant, through the actual windows7
install, the install of apple support drivers, and finally installing jaws12.
There's just no way around the need for sighted assistance in my opinion, but
hey, sighted people aren't so bad ;-)

Did you have sighted assistance while going through the boot camp thingie
yesterday? My guess is that you got to a point in the windows installation
where it came time to do the actual install of windows and you needed sighted
help because no windows audio drivers were loaded yet. Is that pretty much
right?

I ain't done it myself, but, many have. I believe it to be completely
possible because of the way it works. Voice Over won't guide you through the
process; but, still, it can be done. My advice, however, is not to listen to
me but to others who have actually done it.

  The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!

search his site for windows 7 install.

Hi all,

I was wondering how hard it is to install Boot Camp, if it costs money,
and if it is worth it if i already ache VMware Fusion. Waht are the
advantages/disadvantages? would it make the Windows side of my computer
faster/more efficient to be running without the Mac portion running at the same
time, for example? I know others ahve provided instructions, so I could search
for those threads, if instructions were provided about the best way to search
the mail archives, as I don't know.

Also, my other question has to do with 10.8.2. I wondered, since I
know some of you ahve had issues with Voiceover in 10.8.2, owudl yo urecommend
I upgrade from 10.8.1? I am really wanting to improve my Spanish skills, but
my Voiceover defaults to English each time I restart to English even though my
system in in Spanish. I would install 10.8.2 in Spanish to avoid this, but
don't want to make VoiceOver unreliable if 10.8.2 is still pretty buggy.

Thanks for any help, and I hope this is all clear, being unrelated as

If you already have Windows installed via bootcamp, you can then install
VM

Fussion and just point to the boot camp partition as your virtual machine.
You don't have to reinstall Windows. Unfortunately this does not work the
other way around. You can not use a virtual machine that has already been
set up on a boot camp partition.

I haven't gotten around to upgrading to Fussion 5 yet but I haven't heard
anyone complaining about it. I've always downloaded it straight from the
VMWare website which can be a bit confusing. I'm not sure if it is available
in the app store.

They also have a thirty day free trial available if your interested.

very odd thing in mail

2012-10-06 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I was again working with a friend on his mac, and we started to tackle mail.
Since his wife uses the computer more often, they set him up a smart mailbox to
capture all his messages, but mail is primarily under her account. I suggested
making him his own account on the mac, so that we can set up mail to work
normally, remove the favorites bar in safari, let him add only his own
favorites, and all that.

Now, the oddity. In my own mail, I hear something like this as I move through
my inbox:
unread button, sender name, subject, timestamp
However, in my friend's smart mailbox, vo read things much more like a table:
blank, blank, blank, unread, sender name, subject, timestamp
and, if you interacted with the table, you could vo-left/right through these
items, something I can't do in my own mail program. Is this strange behavior
normal and my mail program is the oddity, or is it something to do with the
smart mailbox? Once I get his mail set up in a fresh account on the mac, will
it behave like that smart mailbox or like my own? I'd rather it be like mine,
as I found his setup far too verbose and confusing (things read differently
depending on if he interacted or not, and he's still new to the mac, so I'd
rather not have to deal with details like that). Any suggestions would be
helpful. Thanks.

Have a great day,

Re: PDFpen for iPhone is inaccessible

2012-10-06 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there guys
I got my sided husband to download PDFpen so that he could test it. Well, he's
got a nice piece of software on his iPhone it's going to work just fine.
Unfortunately, PDFpen is using double tap to get into the document to be chosen
for editing. VoiceOver won't let us do it no matter what we do. The other thing
is, you can't choose the fields to be edited with voiceover. It makes that
sound that it makes for graphics, and I thought it was, until my husband
pointed out that no it wasn't. So, I have no idea why you can't select data
fields. And I'm truly disgusted we can't do it. Well, I guess we can write
those guys again.

Re: Boot Camp and 10.8.2

2012-10-06 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I'm not so nonchalant and forgiving about it. I can do the Apple part without
sighted assistance; I can install on my Mac and install on linux on my own. But
i can't install Windows by myself?! I do plan to bootcamp Windows 7 eventually
but right now I am in the process of installing it in vmware fusion, soley
because Windows is the one system I use that doesn't allow me to install it on
my own. i would prefer my choices to be really my choices, not ones forced on
me by the inaccessibility of a system! But I am thankful that at least vmware
does allow me to install Windows independently! At least it allowed me to
install xp independently and I'm about to find out about Windows 7. And despite
my unhappiness with the inaccessibility of the install, I really am looking
forward to learning Windows 7 now that I've decided to finally leave xp behind!

 Harry,

I'm installing windows7 via bootcamp tommorrow morning. It looks quite
straightforward, but sighted assistance is required for the windows
install portion of the process as there is no screen reader support at
 that point.

You can read the installation and setup pdf for bootcamp to get familiar
with the steps involved. And, for the windows7 install, I found a
detailed, step-by-step guide for installing windows7 on Black Viper's
 website

 www.blackviper.com

search his site for windows 7 install.

I'll no doubt be crowing about my new windows7 machine, or asking
frantically for help and advice, depending whether it goes well or badly
 tomorrow.

P.S. if you want a microsoft word document of the bootcamp setup and
installation guide I can send it to you via email - contact me offlist for
 that doc.

Re: newbie tip: vo-u in webpages

2012-10-06 Thread Lisette Wesseling
HI Alex
Just to add to your explanation of the web rotar: if you set single key
navigation to on, you don't even have to press vo-u. You can just press h for
heading, and be immediately in the heading part of the rotar where you can
repeat the h to move by headings, or use down arrow if you prefer. L is for
links, b for buttons etc. I always use single key navigation that way and never
the vo-u method now and it's really excellent. Sometimes I will press h and
then flick up and down on my track pad by headings which I have just set using
the h.
You probably knew about this already but just in case you didn't I thought you
might like to play with it.

Re: macbook licensing

2012-10-06 Thread Alex Hall
I ran into this with an older mac. It came with 10.6, but the owner upgraded it
to 10.7 some months before selling it. As it does not have a recovery
partition, and as the previous owner's iCloud downloaded the Lion update, I
have no way to re-install Lion should I ever need to. I would make sure your
mac has a recovery partition with ML already on it (as in no iCloud required),
or throw in a thumb drive configured to act as a recovery drive. Google can
give you more details, but you basically want to make sure the new owner has
full access to a copy of ML so that your iCloud is not needed to re-download
it. Other than that, do a clean install and you should be all set.

Discovered something in Safari

2012-10-06 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys.
I just discovered something while downloading books from BARD. Maybe some of
you guys knew about this, but I sure didn't. Maybe somebody else here didn't
know either.

I had a problem downloading three of my books while on BARD. I had to go ahead
and quit Safari, erase the old zip files, find the books again, and start over.
I've never had this happen before, but their computer must have been having a
problem.

I had gotten my sighted husband to check the download progress because ours
truly hadn't figured out how. He left the room, and I decided to try something.
After pressing option command l and getting the list, I then got desperate and
interacted with the title of one of them. And lo, when I pressed VO right
arrow, there was the progress indicator. I ended up fixing my problem, so all's
well.

I also have just discovered, at least in Bard, that the return key is working
instead of control option space on those links. This is definitely better than
what has been happening with that command lately. Did it get changed or
something?

Gigi

Re: newbie tip: vo-u in webpages

2012-10-06 Thread Alex Hall
Thanks. I did know about that and I use it a lot, but it requires quicknav,
which I tend to avoid when possible. Also, sometimes quicknav keys fump you out
of the page, particularly form fields when they jump you to the location/search
box. The vo-u command is more concise, faster to navigate, and will not move
you to some other part of the screen. Of course, I do use single-key navigation
a good deal, but the above annoyances have made me use the dedicated rotor
keystroke more and more, especially on google.

Re: selecting multiple items not in order?

2012-10-06 Thread Alex Hall
I've never done this, but isn't there something about disabling cursor tracking
in there somewhere? I'm not sure, but I thought people had talked about it in
the past. Also, as a hint, vo-f6 will speak all the selected items so you can
confirm what you selected before doing anything with the items.

Re: Discovered something in Safari

2012-10-06 Thread Alex Hall
Yes, that new cmd-option=l keystroke is really handy, I just wish the items
were in a table instead of each item being a group that requires even more
interaction. Also, the enter key seems random, and I have no idea if it's a vo
thing, an osx thing, or a web coding thing on the part of the website being
used at the time. I avoid it and use vo-space (made easier since I mapped caps
lock to the vo keys) or the quicknav command.

Re: boot camp

2012-10-06 Thread Alex Hall
I don't have a link, but I did this on my mac mini 2012 with a thumb drive and
a quick trip into the windows command line (of course, the windows pac must
also have a cd drive). Just google something like "set up bootcamp with no cd
drive" and you should find plenty of help. You could also get a usb disk drive,
something you might find handy not just for this but for the occasional cd or
dvd you find yourself needing to play for whatever reason.

Re: Discovered something in Safari

2012-10-06 Thread Alex Hall
Right, that's what I mean. Instead of each row being a group with which you
must again interact, I wish it would just be a proper table, with file name in
the first column, download status in the second, and so on, so you need only
interact with the table to start exploring. Right now, you interact with the
table, find the item you want, interact again, then move left or right until
you find the information. Putting downloads into a table, and not these groups,
just seems a more efficient way of doing things, from a vo perspective anyway.

Hi Lisette,
Can you please explain how to set single key navigation to on?
It might have done previously, but I am just new here, thank you.

HI Alex
Just to add to your explanation of the web rotar: if you set single key
navigation to on, you don't even have to press vo-u. You can just press h
for heading, and be immediately in the heading part of the rotar where you
can repeat the h to move by headings, or use down arrow if you prefer. L is
for links, b for buttons etc. I always use single key navigation that way
and never the vo-u method now and it's really excellent. Sometimes I will
press h and then flick up and down on my track pad by headings which I have
just set using the h.
You probably knew about this already but just in case you didn't I thought
you might like to play with it.

This time it's the web rotor, available in any "html content" item. When
vo is focused in one of these, press vo-u to bring up the web rotor. Left
and right arrows will move you through the different items available (you
can set which ones you see in the vo utility under web). Each time you
left/right arrow to a category, vo tells you how many of that item are on
the page. You then use up and down arrows to move through the list of that
item. For instance, you might do a google search, then bring up the web
rotor and arrow to headings. Use up and down arrows in the headings list
to move through your search results. Pressing space or vo-space on any
item will jump you to it, but will not open it, even if it is a link. So,
if you are arrowing along and find a link in the rotor list, press space
on it and vo will jump to it. You must vo-space again to actually open the
link.

This looks like a really neat tool and one I will certainly be using more
now that I know about it. As always, if I have made any errors, please
correct me so we don't have bad information getting spread around.

enabling single key navigation (was newbie tip: vo-u in webpages)

2012-10-06 Thread Alex Hall
1. With vo on, press vo-f8 to open the vo utility.
2. Select commanders from the table, or press cmd-8. Select the Quicknav tab
from the tabs that appear.
3. Find and check the "enable single key navigation on webpages" checkbox, then
cmd-q to close the utility.

I don't have a link, but I did this on my mac mini 2012 with a thumb drive
and a quick trip into the windows command line (of course, the windows pac
must also have a cd drive). Just google something like "set up bootcamp with
no cd drive" and you should find plenty of help. You could also get a usb
disk drive, something you might find handy not just for this but for the
occasional cd or dvd you find yourself needing to play for whatever reason.

Victor Reader Stream and vmware fusion

2012-10-06 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I hope this isn't too far offtopic but I saw posts on this topic from 2010 when
I googled so I'm hoping maybe somebody has figured this out since then. i've
had this problem with every Stream I've had - one for my daughter and two for
me! i can connect my Stream just fine in Mac OS, but I cannot connect it in
Windows Xp and now in Windows 7 in vmware fusion though they do connect on a
Windows pc. Vmware recognizes the Stream by name and asks where I want to
connect it but after I choose, it never actually connects as far as Windows is
concerned. I rarely really need to connect the Stream directly, only if I had a
new Stream and had to activate it in Audible or maybe if I ever wanted to use
Humanware Companion. But it drives me crazy! I have other devices that connect
in Windows with vmware but just not the Stream. It's one of the few reasons why
I am considering doing bootcamp eventually though it's not the biggest reason.
I called Humanware about this once and was just vaguely told that they had
heard of it happening with some computer setups. Does anybody have any ideas
about what to do about this? it isn't crucial most of the time, but I'd sure
like to solve it. A tech person from Audible got on my computer when I was
running vmware with xp and he couldn't figure it out either.

stop current song and start new one in iTunes?

2012-10-06 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I finally did it: I added all my music to my library. It looks quite useful
right now, though there are over 100 songs that are in some way "unknown",
which will take me a long time to label. Anyway, question: when I play a song
and then move through more items and fine a new one I want to play while the
previous one is still playing, how can I do this? Space only pauses and plays
the previous track, it won't start playing the new one. I see nothing in the
controls menu for this. Do I have to manually search out the stop button? I'd
rather not, as it is nowhere near my music list. Thanks.

Really, your best bet is to google it and read through some of the guides you
will find for doing this. They make it simple, though you will need sighted
help for some of it (the windows side, of course).

Re: Victor Reader Stream and vmware fusion

2012-10-06 Thread John Sanfilippo
I can certainly understand why you'd want to just connect your Victor Reader
Stream, rather than removing the SD card and either putting it directly into a
slot if available on the computer, or inserting the card into a card reader,
but I've always just done this because I understood that the Victor is rather
slow and other card readers are much faster. I wonder if that might change the
situation for you.

me! i can connect my Stream just fine in Mac OS, but I cannot connect it in
Windows Xp and now in Windows 7 in vmware fusion though they do connect on a

Re: Victor Reader Stream and vmware fusion

2012-10-06 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Of course, I usually just use the sd card too. As i pointed out, though, you
can't do that when initially activating a new Stream in audible.com and you
can't do that with the Companion. Neither of these are things I do often but I
would like to be able to do them when necessary.
Thanks much for responding.

selecting multiple items not in order?

2012-10-06 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Use the control-option-command-space keystroke. I typically need to press it
once to get started and then press it once on each item I wish to select. If
you wish to deselect an item you have selected, simply press the same
keystroke, control-option-command-space on the item again. You can use VO-F6 to
check which items are selected before you copy, cut etc.

fan running all the time

2012-10-06 Thread Eric Oyen
hello folks.

I seem to be running into a problem where the fan on my macbook is running all
the time. the unit also seems to be running a lot warmer since I installed
lion. This machine is just 1 revision behind what would be supported for
mountain lion, so I cannot go there. anyway, does anyone know what is causing
this?

Re: fan running all the time

2012-10-06 Thread Pam Francis
Hi Eric,
It could be just as simple as cleaning the vents. I am no tech, but that is
what I would try first.Do you have any kind of applecare with the machine? If
so, they may be able to help you diagnose your issue.

Re: fan running all the time

2012-10-06 Thread Eric Oyen
already checked that. vent is clean (even had someone with working eyes check
it). this problem only appeared AFTER upgrading to lion. the unit was running
cooler under snow leopard and never demonstrated this problem before the
upgrade (less than 2 days ago).
