Re: bootcamp

2012-09-26 Thread Chris Bruinenberg
Not stupid at all.
Go to system tray and boootcamp and you can choose which you'd like to use as
default.
You can hold down option when starting up your computer. Then arrow to which
you would like to use.

Re: Calibres ebook-converter

2012-09-26 Thread sandi sørensen
hi, i am not sure you can convert a whole library at a time but
single converts, no problem.
Usually i do that from the terminal. an example would look something like this.
cp file from its start location too the location where you ahve the
app laying, on my box it is /Applications/calibre.app/Contents/MacOs.
so the actual command line in the terminal would be: cp file.epub
/Applications/calibre.app/Contents/MacOS.
after that change too the right folder, location.
cd /Applications/calibre.app/Contents/MacOS.
okay last, but not least convert the file from one format, for me that
might be text files.
./ebook-convert file.epub .txt
after that copy the textfile or just read it as you would usually do
with textedit.
Congrats, you are now set to read as much as you want.

importing activities? Can this be done?

2012-09-26 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello.
I just took delivery of a brand new MacBook Air yesterday afternoon. When I
exported my VO prefs from my old Mac, and then imported them in to my new one
everything imported properly accept for activities.
Does anyone know if activities are supposed to be exported when one exports
VO's preferences? If yes, shouldn't they be imported when one chooses to import
preferences?
Thanks for any answers. I'm feeling like this is a small bug that I should
report to Apple Accessibility.
Thanks again for any feedback.

Re: bootcamp

Hi,

Yes, this is one way from the windows side but, you can also press the option
key at start up, as soon as you here the chime. This will bring you into the
boot menu. Pressing the right arrow once, and pressing enter should boot you
into windows.

Also, the Refit boot manager lets me press m for mac or w for windows, which is
easier than arrowing. You can also set a default OS I believe.

Facebook and the messages app

2012-09-26 Thread William Windels
Hello all,
I am trying to chat on Facebook with the built in messages app in 10.8.2 and it
works.
The only thing I would like to have is that the incoming messages should be
spoken to me.

IN the message centre, I have set announcements on , not batches but, the
incoming text is not poping up like the agenda is doing when a appointment
arrives.

Is it possible to read out automatically the incoming messages of Facebook /
twitter with the message app?

kind regards,
William Windels

Re: Mail has no windows.

2012-09-26 Thread Steve Holmes
The only time I've ever seen this is when that is the correct situation and
there are really no windows open. You can get this by pressing Command-W one
too many times; like close the message and then pressing it again while in the
message list. You can end up in "no man's land" so to speak. I just close and
re-open mail if I accidentally do this and I'm put right back where I was in
the message list; I don't lose my place. I would say there is no bug here.

The thing I don't like about this business of cross posting is that these lists

2012-09-26 Thread Kimsan
Hello everyone:
So, option key held down was what I gfound on google and what was said here.
However, something strange happened last night and I hope I did not screw
anything up.
I held down the option key when booting up the mac and next thing I know, it
was installing mac lion. Huh?
I just thought by holding option key down while rebooting it would
automatically boot me into the other os I had and was not aware of the right
arrow after pressing option.
So, did I lose the windows 7? That would suck after everything I went
through with that mac machine yesterday. Lol.
How would I know if the windows 7 is still on there because it really
through me a loop that mac lion was being installed.
Thanks.

Re: Mail has no windows.

2012-09-26 Thread Cheryl Homiak
If you aren't getting busy signals and it's just that you accidentally closed
your window, in Mail you can do cmd-option-n to open a new window; in fact, I
often do this just when I want to go back and forth between two mailboxes for
some reason quickly and repeatedly though of course I can also do this with
favorites. In safari, if you have no windows but nothing is actually wrong,
cmd-n will open a window.

Getting mad is completely understandable; we all do that from time to time but
getting help is a lot more productive than getting mad.

You can also use Command plse the number keys to bring up different windows.

Command+1 will open the inbox.

command +2 will open the sent window
and command +4 will open the drafts.

You can use these to get your windows back when you have closed them
accidentally.

I like this new change. I use a pin lock on my phone, and it's fine. I think
the phone, even though it's a 4S seems a little faster in some areas. Why
they had to turn my volume down that I liked the way it was, even though I
updated over the air, I don't know. What I had to do to raise it was to move
my finger randomly around the screen as I pressed the side volume buttons.

This morning, September 22, I updated the I O S of my I-devices from
5.xxx to I O S 6. I used wifi.

At the end of the update process, the prompt instructed me to type in my
ICloud password. When I attempted to do this, neither of the IOS
devices' screens would respond to taps to engage the shift or
numbers/symbols levels. This meant that I had to skip this process.

I phoned Apple. Their service offers an automated, interactive tool
which I attempted to use. Things went well until the auto-service wanted
my serial number. It placed me in wait mode while I looked up my serial
number. Unfortunately, the wait mode employed music to keep the line
active. The music masked out VoiceOver prompts. The assumption in wait
mode seemed to exclude auditory feedback as a mode to acquire and
transfer info. The designers didn't think that a VoiceOver user would
have to hear spoken prompts over the music.

A solution could involve a choice at the point where the wait screen came
on saying something like selecting whether to hear the music or a soft,
intermittent tone. The tone would keep the line active and would not
significantly block VoiceOver feedback while a VoiceOver user searched
the device for data or info.

I asked for an agent and got a woman who could not get her head around
the Voice Over connection at first. Apparently, apple is still training
their people to think in separate but equal mode, where VoiceOver becomes
the province of a specialized cadre who only deal with this ever so
special application. Sounds a lot like JAWS and Freedom Scientific's way
of handling things, doesn't it? I, for one, have walked in greener
pastures and don't want that non-productive, isolating thinking
circulating in an Apple mindset or tech environment.

I got escalated to what the woman called a senior person. He didn't get
disability access well. He kept saying that the odd, high-pitched tone
the VoiceOver voice now uses when the screen locks is so that blind
people who are totally blind can understand that the screen is locked.
When I cleared it up by explaining that I am totally blind and don't need
to have incompetence flouted as accessibility in the name of me being
blind, he then said that the voice went into this high-pitched,
exaggerated tonal mode for the lock screen notification because some
blind people put their screens on vibrate and this signals them. I said
that when the screen is on vibrate, the voice doesn't signal.

I think he wasn't as senior as he claimed. But he did know enough to
show me how to check the Settings/ICloud area. It seems that my problem
is fixed somehow re ICloud enrollment or upgrade, or whatever.

Have any others experienced this dramatically different lock screen tone
change when the screens of the I-devices lock? I'm using the Karen
voice, I think that's her designation.

Cheree Heppe

2012-09-26 Thread Kimsan
Hi Again,

I was reading through this tutorial that someone posted many moons ago and I
was reading the commands and gestures section and most of these didn't sound
familiar to me, not because I am not a full time mac user but the dozens of
times I have used this machine, I don't remember these keystrokes. Now my
question is with every upgrade do the keystrokes change as in version 10 3
or what ever, the same will work in 10.7?

Re: Database Application for the Mac

2012-09-26 Thread Esther
Hi Harry,

A number of VO users reported being quite happy with Bento and rated
this app very highly prior to updating to Mountain Lion, but
apparently after updating they are getting "Bento
busy, Bento ready" messages. I've only read detailed discussions
about Bento on the mac-access list, so you could try doing a Mail
Archive search for that list's archived content if you want to read
more about this, or else joint that list. A lot of these issues seem
to be specific to running this software under Mountain Lion, and this
may be true of the recent App Store reviews (by non-VoiceOver users),
too. Some users only reported encountering problems after updating --
they had no problems running the very same version of the software
before updating to Mountain Lion, and were also pleased by the ability
to sync information using the Bento iOS apps.

Just something to keep in mind when you perform your evaluations.
Since you're running Mountain Lion you'll want to know abut the
specific performance under this OS. Also, improvements in behavior
may only come with more ML specific experience on the part of
developers.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

password after screen saver or sleep.

2012-09-26 Thread Nektarios Mallas
Hi list.
I reinstalled my OS and applications completely from scratch, and now every
time my mac goes to screen saver or sleep, after I come back, it asks me for my
admin password.
I remember I did it once, but for the life of me, I can't remember now how I
dsabled this. I don't need to enter password every time this happens.
How do I do that?

Thanks.

Nektarios.

selling my mac

2012-09-26 Thread Chris Bruinenberg
Hi all.
So i'm thinking of selling my macbook pro.
The only reason i want to sell it is because i want a lighter laptop for at
college.
I will be commuting for several hours a day and will need a lighter computer.
My question is, since i purchased the upgrade for the laptop, will i have to
transfer the mountain lion upgrade?
If somebody were to ever restore it.
Also, if anybody is interested please feel free to contact me.

Thanks.

Re: Mail has no windows.

2012-09-26 Thread Cheryl Homiak
What kind of computer are you using? Could you accidentally be hitting
something on the trackpad? Or is there any way the command key is getting hit
somehow when you type a w? There has to be an explanation of some kind even if
I haven't hit on it. If you were getting busy signals or something crashed I
could understand it but for you to get "no windows" in two different
applications when typing may suggest that something is being accidentally
engaged.

Re: Instapaper Toolbar Bookmark

2012-09-26 Thread Esther
Hi Emilio,

The easiest way to put an Instapaper bookmarklet onto your Safari
toolbar is to create the bookmark on your Mac, and then sync it to
Safari on your iOS device. I should add that I found that the process
of creating the Instapaper bookmarklet on your iPhone or iPad as
described at the Instapaper site is also accessible, but it takes more
steps to do. Start at the Instapaper extras web page:
http://www.instapaper.com/extras

Whenever you encounter instructions to drag and drop a bookmark to
your Safari toolbar, simply use the contextual menu (VO-Shift-M) with
the option to "Copy Link". Create a bookmark of the current page with
the Command-D shortcut, and save it to the "Bookmarks Bar" in the pop
up menu, with a name of your choice (e.g. "Read Later"). Then,
navigate to that bookmark in the "Show All Bookmarks" page (brought up
with Command-Option-B), use the "Edit Address" option of the
contextual menu, and paste the link you copied into the address field.
This works for javascript bookmarklets (such as the Instapaper
Bookmarklet, or Google Translation bookmarklets), as well as regular
bookmarks. If you have these as one of the first 9 entries in the
Bookmarks bar, you can just use Command+1 for the first bookmark,
Command+2 of the second and so forth. Using this shortcut will also
run javascript bookmarklets.

If you want to read step-by-step directions, I wrote these out in a
mac-access list post at the end of last year. Here's the link to this
post at the Mail Archive site:
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access%40mac-access.net/msg05153.html

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

deleting emails in mac mail

2012-09-26 Thread Kimsan
Hi,

Still working on this new combo set up in bootcamp, I am wondering on the
mac book pro when wanting to delete an email message, how is this done?

Where the delete key is normally on my windows machines, instead of a delete
key, it's an eject key.

Along those same lines, how do I delete an email using mac mail.

Thanks.

with your devices, so anything you do on your iOS device should appear on
your mac and vice versa. You can also back up to, and restore from, dropbox

Where the delete key is normally on my windows machines, instead of a delete
key, it's an eject key.

Along those same lines, how do I delete an email using mac mail.

Thanks.

Re: mac-access list

2012-09-26 Thread Esther
Hi Estelita,

The subscription information for the mac-access list may be found at:
http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/mac-access

That list, like the macvisionaries list, is also archived at the
secondary Mail Archive site, so even if you are not subscribed to the
mac-access list, you can read its posts and search for content by
going to its web page at the Mail Archive site:
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/
Typing in search terms into the text box and pressing "return" will
display links to posts matching your search terms, much like doing a
google search.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Onscreen Keyboard with iPad 3 and iOS 6

2012-09-26 Thread Timothy Hornik
Greeting everyone,

I am having issues with the onscreen keyboard on my iPad 3 running iOS6. I have
not noticed this before as I generally use a bluetooth keyboard, but the on
screen keyboard is not working at all when I have the bluetooth one disabled.
It does not matter if I am using split or regular keyboard styles, Voice Over
reads the key my finger is touching and makes the correct clikcing noise, but
nothing is being typed. Any ideas?

I am not having the issue with my updated 3GS running iOS 6, just the iPad 3.
Could it be software related?
Thank you for your assistance,

Hi.

I have got it to work. Is it really true that you can only do 1 file at a time

Do I need to move my files into calibre, or can I do the cd command to another
folder and then do the convertion?

Selecting to End of Line in Safari Edit Fields

2012-09-26 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi,

Recently I've noticed that the command shift right arrow and command shift left
arrow keystrokes to select to the end of the line and beginning of the line
respectively are not working properly in text edit fields in Safari. I've only
noticed this since upgrading to Mountain Lion, probably only since the 8.2
upgrade. When I press command shift right arrow from within a text edit field
in Safari the VoiceOver curser seems to jump somewhere random on the page. It
behaves very strangely. The option shift arrow keystrokes work fine, however.

Is anyone else having this problem? Or is it just me? If it's just me perhaps I
should try reinstalling Mountain Lion or something. If other people are having
this issue maybe we can report it to Apple accessibility.

Cheers,
Nic

Trouble Interacting with the HTML Area in Messages

2012-09-26 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI,

Just today I started having a problem with the Messages app. I'm running the
latest version of Mountain Lion.

When I first start messaging someone, I'm able to interact with the HTML
conversation area fine. However, after carrying on the conversation for
sometime, VoiceOver suddenly refuses to interact with the HTML area.

The only solution I've found for this so far is to quit Messages and re open
it. This works for a short time and then I am unable to interact again.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Cheers,
Nic

HTH. Cheers,

Re: When might we expect a Voiceover Improvement in 10.8

2012-09-26 Thread Steve Holmes
When it comes to automatic interaction with HTML content, it has always worked
even up through the update to 10.8.2 on my Mac mini. Unfortunately this
morning was the first time I started having some issues with this working
properly. I recall recycling VO off and back on and then it has been working
fine ever since. I will say though, be sure and wait for the page to load
before trying to navigate the page. I often hear ticks while the page is
loading (which is normal because it sometimes takes a while to finish loading)
and finally hear the focus change sound. The only thing I have spoken is the
page statistics; I don't use any automatic reading of the text. After all
that, VO automatically interacts with the page content as I discussed above.

I just completed bootcamp. I needed assistance for one step and that was

I don't have a pimping system like others on here but I don't find it to run
slow.
As far as switching back and forth, I just held the option key down once I
heard the music, I have a little vision, so I saw the different drives and
new to press right arrow once, then press enter and windows will load.

Re: selling my mac

2012-09-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Chris,

I have an 11-inch MacBook Air and it's so light and small I can carry it in a
large handbag. It's true that it has no superdrive built in, but you can buy a
separate external superdrive for it which is also small and light.

I've had this MBA for 16 months now and am delighted with it.

I've been using Macs for 16 years and this MBA is my favourite so far,
supplanting the 12-inch PowerBook that was my previous favourite.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: shortcut keys for vo

2012-09-26 Thread Steve Holmes
The best way to review current VO key assignments is to do VO-H twice and you
will be in the Commands menu with 14 sub menus. Just drill down into all of
these and you will see all possible VO commands and what keys are assigned to
them. there are even some commands which are probably less often used which do
not have keys assigned.

Re: Database Application for the Mac

2012-09-26 Thread Steve Holmes
Another thing I discovered to be on the mac is PostgreSQL which is a very
powerful SQL oriented database. I discovered the related binaries to be
available from the terminal but the server isn't running by default. I intend
to investigate this further in the near future. Only thing here is you would
probably need to run queries from the shell. This might be too big a tool for
your simple needs. From what you described, you would probably only be using a
single table and perhaps the previously recommended packages would suit you
fine.
