Re: finder frustrations

2012-08-07 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Alex,

Just a thought on this. How do you open your folders and subfolders generally?
I always make sure that my subfolders are collapsed and I always open them with
command+down arrow so that I am sure that I am within the folder I want.
Therefore, when I start typing the first few letters of a file, I won't ever
leave the folder. However, if your subfolder is expanded with right arrow key
press, it is possible that you are searching within more than one folder.
Voiceover announces to me whether a folder is expanded or collapsed. I'm still
on lion though.

Hope this helps.

Hi Alex!
I suppose you are using arrows to open the folders!
OK when you get to that folder instead of using arrow open with Command+O
and you should have only that folder open and not end up somewhere else!

In terms of accessibility? no, just as hard work as ever. Still too many
things to interact and Numbers still does not read out ranges correctly etc.

The amount of interacting you have to do drives me nuts. I wonder if Google
search would be as popular if you had to do 6 mouse clicks to get through a
series of web pages before you could actually reach the search box? That is a
lot of hoops to jump through just to perform a basic task. Welcome to iWork!

2012-08-07 Thread William Windels
Hello, Alex and others,
I simply use column view as my default view.
With that view, I press (vo)right arrow to open a folder and (vo)left to close.
When I open/close folders on that way, only the contents of that folder is
available.
Whhen I want more details of a file/folder, , I switch to the list view with
command+2 and back to column view with command+3.

Hope this helps,

Re: how to drag the dmg image?

2012-08-07 Thread Andrew Lamanche
I have accomplished this by downloading and running a free application called
Lion Diskmaker 2rc2.app. They welcome donations but you are not obliged to pay.

Once you paste this application into your application folder, open it. It will
locate your .dmg file and will ask you on which drive you wish to create a
bootable image. Choose your drive or partition, and job done. First time I did
it, the application actually informed me that it had completed the task. But
next time, it just hung there. I had to force quit it but when I tested the
usb flash drive by booting from it, it worked fine.
You should be able to find the relevant web page in Google.

Good luck.

Re: Mac and startup repair or equivalent

2012-08-07 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Yes, if you run Lion or Mountain Lion, you can start your computer from the
hidden recovery partition.

Shut down your computer.
Power it back on and immediately hold down command+r keys. The computer should
boot from the recovery partition.
Note! Give it some good while because at this stage you have no speech.
Then activate Voiceover with command+f5. You will gett a different voice here
so don't panic.
You will be placed on the table of available applications/functions. Interact.
At the bottom of the list you will find disk utility application. Stop
interacting with the table and move right to press go button if I remember
correctly.
Disk utility will be launched. From there you can repair permissions, and
verify disk. If there is a problem, you will be given a chance to repair it.

Hope this helps

Questions

2012-08-07 Thread Gavin Grundlingh
Hi all,

Long time no speak. I have a couple of questions regarding YoruFukurou and
booting from an external DVD drive.

1. Are there any shortcuts to follow or unfollow users in YoruFukurou? Unless
I'm thinking of a different application, I should be able to use
Command-Option-O to follow and Command-Option-U to unfollow, but those don't
seem to do anything. Also, is there a way to follow or unfollow a user by
entering a user ID?

2. I have an external USB DVD drive. It's an LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-E10L. I
wanted to boot from a Windows install disk, but I keep getting a black screen
with a flashing cursor. I have tried disks for Windows XP Professional, Windows
Vista Ultimate and Windows 7 Ultimate, and the same happens with each of them.
Is the Mac unable to boot from certain drives? I've used this DVD drive on
other computers and it works just fine. I can't use my Mac's internal drive
because it keeps ejecting disks, so I can't verify that the DVD's I'm trying to
use will work natively. I'm including the details from System Information below
incase it'll be of any help:

  Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

You can follow someone by inputting their user ID with command+u. Then a table
will come up containing their tweets. To quickly get to the user menu where
following/unfollowing is possible, once their timeline is up, or you're focused
on a tweet of their's, press command+option+apostrophe.
Then you can vo+space on the menu, and you'll have all those options.

Re: finder frustrations

2012-08-07 Thread Alex Hall
Thanks all. Yes, I use right arrow to open, but I'll try cmd-o (or cmd-down, as
I think it does the same thing) from now on and see if that makes a difference.
I'll also play with the different views to see if one works better.

Hi,

I prefer the column view myself. List view talks too much for me. Most of the
time, I don't need to know the date the file or folder was created.

ML Safari and tables

2012-08-07 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Hi All,

Since installing ML and the latest Safari build, my business internet banking
has failed to work correctly.

I'm not sure if this is the bank and the way its site is built, or the new
latest Safari build.

Basically, in SL and Lion, I used to be able to configure payments by setting
the date etc, then tab through a table of payees and select the ones I wish to
pay.

Now the tab key jumps the entire list of check boxes and leaps to the end
continue button. I can do nothing to work with that table.

If I use the item chooser etc that finds the items, but, pressing return on the
item leaps right to the continue button.

Using the VO right arrow from the date area also jumps the hole lot.

Any thoughts, has anyone else experienced this with HSBC banking online, or,
any other site that did work OK with SL and Lion, but not ML.

thanks for any thoughts and ideas.

Re: ML Safari and tables

2012-08-07 Thread Chris Blouch
In Safari Preferences Advanced tab there is a checkbox (at least on OSX
10.7) to press tab to highlight each item on a web page. Otherwise I
think tab only navigates between form elements. Maybe you had this on
before and it got turned off in the upgrade.

Re: ML Safari and tables

2012-08-07 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
that might make sense if the issue was only when using the tab key.

but, I also cannot navigate into the table by using the Voice Over right arrow
command, in other words, Voice Over skips the entire table no matter what I do.

Interestingly though, Voice Over knows the table is there, and even its
content, as I can use the Item Chooser to see whats there.

Re: ML Safari and tables

2012-08-07 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi Neil.

Occasionally I use HSBC Internet Banking (However not tried it in ML) yet.
When doing it with Lion, when getting to the tables for interactions or if to
transfer money or to pay a payee, I'd do vo down arrow to go down rather than
across as at times that worked. I've not had too much luck with HSBC internet
banking but haven't tried it in ML yet. The website works better under Jaws as
they designed it with jaws in mind. Mind you I tried Fast Balance (an
application for the I phone) as it's separate to Business Banking and when I
spoke to the Internet Team about this they said they were working on a fix as
it was not accessible yet with Voice Over but they would not give me a date to
when it would be fixed.

Kawal.

Re: finder frustrations

2012-08-07 Thread Alex Hall
I just did a quick test. In column view (cmd-3), you can still right arrow on a
folder to open it, and left arrow to close it, but typing letters searches that
folder first, which list view seems not to do. Also, you have to left arrow a
few times to close in list view, but column view you only need to do it once. I
almost never care about additional file info, and if I need it I have cmd-i, so
I think column view will be my default from now on as it seems to work better.
That said, how do I set it to be my default, or will it remember my preference
once I hit cmd-3?

I suppose you are using arrows to open the folders!
OK when you get to that folder instead of using arrow open with Command+O
and you should have only that folder open and not end up somewhere else!

Re: Preview versus skim?

Hi. i normally open a file in skim or preview and interact with the text. I
then do a command a to select everything and command c to copy. I then paste
it in to a text editor. Pressing command shift t in itext express and text

 Hi Chris,

It's actually possible to merge PDF files with Preview if you can drag and

Re: copying album artwork file

Checking that box worked. Thanks :)

As far as I can tell the album artwork is just like the album cover. It shows
up on my touch while playing.

You connect the ethernet cable to one of the ports on the router (if you
also have a modem, make sure the chord is not going into the port set
aside for the modem) and the other end into the iMac. I've not tried it
personally, but the mac should then automatically find the connection and
start using it, prompting for a password if you have one set but otherwise
 operating normally.

Re: After installing ML my mailboxes are MIA

2012-08-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

In order for the Contextual menu to be populated with such Mailboxes, the
parent box needs to be expanded in the Mailboxes list. That is, when you
navigate down the list of boxes in the Mailboxes list, after the Trash and Junk
items, VO should read the title of your various Inboxes again. This is the
parent folder for all sub-folders attached to the given mailbox. Expand that
folder and all mailboxes will be visible in both the Mailboxes list and in the
Contextual menus.

Re: finder frustrations

2012-08-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

To make column View your Default, open a window in the finder (like Macintosh
HD), press cmd-3 to make sure you're in column View, press cmd-j to bring up
the View options and check the box to always open in Column View.

Another way to attack this is to set your Finder to always open folders in a
new window. go to the Desktop, press cmd-comma to bring up the Finder
Preferences and check the box to have the Finder always open folders in a new
window. Years ago this used to be the default but it was changed a couple of
cats ago.

Re: messages app for chatting with Facebook friends?

2012-08-07 Thread Brandon Olivares
You can do it with Messages.

Add an account and select Jabber as the type.

Make sure you know your usernae from Facebook. Not your e-mail address, but the
username you probably selected at some point. For instance, if I go to
www.facebook.com/Brandon.Olivares, my profile will come up, so my username is
Brandon.Olivares.

After you find that username, enter usern...@chat.facebook.com in the username
field of the account settings, replacing username with your Facebook username.
Enter your password into the password field.

Now you should be set.

Hi Neil.

Occasionally I use HSBC Internet Banking (However not tried it in ML) yet.
When doing it with Lion, when getting to the tables for interactions or if
to transfer money or to pay a payee, I'd do vo down arrow to go down rather
than across as at times that worked. I've not had too much luck with HSBC
internet banking but haven't tried it in ML yet. The website works better
under Jaws as they designed it with jaws in mind. Mind you I tried Fast
Balance (an application for the I phone) as it's separate to Business
Banking and when I spoke to the Internet Team about this they said they were
working on a fix as it was not accessible yet with Voice Over but they would
not give me a date to when it would be fixed.

Kawal.

I believe that, as long as you have a text box for the results to be plugged
into, it works. I've used it in Mail, TextEdit, Skype and Messages. I don't
see why you couldn't use it anywhere there's an edit box.

It should, and you can use the mic in your Macbook Air or whatever, or an

help needed with hardware test on most recent macbook air (2012)

2012-08-07 Thread William Windels
Hello,
I don't know if this is asked before but how can I do a hardwaretest on my
macbook air?
I taught it was command+d after you reboot the system and you hear the
startsound of the mac.
(on the same time you do command+r for recovery mode).
When I do this, my macbook air seems to boot normally.
I suppose voiceover is available in the hardwaretest module?
If not, can we do the test our self by pressing some hotkeys and view the
results after rebooting in a kind of log file?

Thx a lot for your suggestions

Re: another scanning products question

2012-08-07 Thread erik burggraaf
Eyepal is a camera on a monopod. It stands about 10 in tall. There are two
arms at the bottom. One is 8.5 IN. The other is 11 in. These are the
measurements of standard A4 paper. Set up on a desk it looks not half bad.
Folded up it looks like something some amateur knocked together out of old pipe.

It plugs in USB to the computer..

It's accurate and fast. Unfortunately the software is windows based running in
x-windows. As such, it leaves quite a lot to be desired at this point.

Still, for speed, accuracy, and convenience, no other mac solution comes close
right now. Then again, the nearest competitor is only about a quarter the
price of the eyepal. Well, maybe half if you buy the hovercam and docuscan.
Still, half price or better is enough, especially for advanced users who don't
mind tweaking, to ignore or workaround the shortcomings of the less expensive
products.

I make use of setting webspots and sweet spots on the pages I go to a
lot, as I find this makes navigating a page much faster. Anyway, all
of my webspots have been reversed in mountain lion. what I mean is to
scroll down from the top to the bottom of the page in previous
versions I would hit VO Command right bracket to go to the next web
spot to the right, and VO command left bracket to go to the next web
spot to the left. Simple. In Mountain it is completely reverse which
is one of the most annoying thing as when I click VO command righ
bracket it takes me to the next web spot to the left and VO command
left bracket to the next web spot to the right. This makes no sense
what so ever, and I am wondering if it is a setting that I have set
incorrectly for navigating a page. I tried turning scrolling from
normal to not clicking normal and this did nothing. This setting was
under the Track pad. I don't even have a mouse connected, so maybe the
setting is in that menu, as I can't even access the mouse menu since
my system doesn't detect a mouse. Has anyone else experienced this? I
am so used to where all of my web spots are set this is so
frustrating. I even tried removing my web spots on a page and
resetting them, but this didn't change the directions. It would make
sense you click right and you go right you click left and you go left,
but not in Mountain Lion. Would appreciate any help. Thanks

nope. Keep in mind, Garageband is Apples consumer music creating app.
You'd have to bump up to logic Pro to do that.

Re: Problem with Safari and Interacting with Pages in Mountain Lion

2012-08-07 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey ann and Tim,

All of my settings were properly set, I have reported the issue to
Apple, and they have responded as they were able to recreate the issue
so I guess it will go on to the list of things theu will hopefully be
fixing. I was not able to fix the problem by restarting, but I did
toggle Voiceover off and then on with Command F5 and now everything is
working fine. Just wanted to post this in case someone else has the
issue and hopefully if this happens again toggling off and on will
fix. amazing how much nicer it is to browse without first having to
interact with the page.

Hi Mary,

I am writing this to you using dictation. It is absolutely necessary to put in
the punctuation. Also, you will need to say " newline "When you want to enter a
newline Character.

Well this is an example of what it looks like when you don't send punctuation
just as the run off and on and on and it looks like this and that's what you
have to say the punctuation I hope that helps

Of this, is what it looks like when you do say the punctuation. Because, of
course, it changes the entire look of the text, as you can see.

Solution to Multiple Messages in Mail.app and a question about VIP's

2012-08-07 Thread Harry Hogue
Hi, guys,

For those of you, like me, who use Gmail to access your mail and the Apple Mail
client to read your mail, if you want philters on your messages, or even if you
don't , you may occasionally find that messages are duplicated because of
Gmail's folder system (which they call labels). I found an article just now
that explained how to clear up this confusion, and have successfully applied it.

I don't know if there is an accessible version of gmail.com, but I went into
settings and clicked on the labels tab (it took me some time to play with it to
figure out how to get there) and unchecked everything concerned with "Show in
iMap list." This way all I have is a single folder in Mail.app which says,
"Gmail," where all my messages are. With this in mind, I am now going to go
and recreate my Mac Visionaries rule with a mailbox in Mail, and hopefully this
will clarify things. I have no idea how that will affect things -- if messages
may be missed because they are then not pulled to the mail client because of
being tagged as "important," etc. and therefore may not appear in my filtered
list of messages, but it is definitely worth a try, and I wanted to pass this
tip along to others. In other words, if it helps clear up some confusion, all
the better. I was getting very tired of duplicate messages. They are probably
still on Gmail's server, which I would prefer they not be -- so maybe I should
uncheck or just remove some of the labels all together. I'm not sure, and if
anyone has thoughts on this, I'm open to hearing them.

In the meantime, I'm off to create a rule which will hopefully keep me more
organized.

On another note, is anyone familiar with the new VIP feature in Mail and how
that might work with VoiceOver? As I understand it, it is a way to be notified
of an incoming message form a particular person, and I suppose the notification
arrives via notification center?

All the best,

Harry

So Why on Earth Does Mission Control Just Pop Up Unexpectedly With That Weird Noise?

This is happening a few times a day, in Mail, in Safari, while searching in

Re: So Why on Earth Does Mission Control Just Pop Up Unexpectedly With That Weird Noise?

2012-08-07 Thread Veronica Elsea
Christine, it's because the command to get into Mission control is
control-down-arrow. All it takes is to hit the control key to shut up
speech, then hit the down-arrow a little too soon and there you are.
Mission control is supposed to be a place where you can look at all of
the different applications you have opened.
If you go into system preferences and find the keyboard section, then
choose the keyboard shortcuts tab, you can get rid of this shortcut and
this annoyance will go away. As I remember the dialog was a bit twiddly
fiddly for me when I did this, but I was much more of a beginner than I
am now, which is a slightly more advanced beginner. Hahahaha! But when
I'm on my macbook soon, I'll take another look at that dialog in case
you have more questions about making sure you get rid of the right
shortcut. Also, I think control-left-arrow opens the dash board. Hope
this helps as a start, at least.

Mission Controls' preferences are in System Preferences under Apple. I don't
see a way to disable it, but maybe you can identify what command, or keyboard

Getting Mission Control out of the way.

2012-08-07 Thread Veronica Elsea

Hi Christine and everyone.
Okay, I'm on the MacBook now so I thought I'd share what I did to get
rid of Mission Control's annoying unwanted appearances.

1. go into system preferences.
2. Interact with preference panes scroll area.
3. VO-right-arrow to the keyboard button. Note: You will pass by
Mission control, which does contain some keyboard options. But these are
for keyboard commands while you're in Mission control, so they're not
what we're after at the moment.
4. Select keyboard and VO-right-arrow to the keyboard shortcuts tab and
select it. Note: You'll pass by the keyboard tab on the way to the
keyboard shortcuts tab.

5. VO-right-arrow till you hear "shortcut categories table.
6. On mine, Mission control was the first item in the table. If it
isn't for you, up and down arrow till you find mission control.
7. Then VO-right-arrow past a vertical splitter, then you'll find
mission control shortcuts table.
8. Here's where it got interesting for me. If you don't interact with
the shortcuts table, you can up and down arrow, hearing checkboxes which
are either checked or unchecked. But of course, you can't change the
state of the checkboxes. Once you interact, you can uncheck these boxes,
you just can't tell what you're unchecking. So I just kept tabbing and
shift-tabbing back and forth, being careful that I didn't get myself
into a strange table and uncheck some big thing somewhere. But
when you're not interacting with the shortcuts table, you will see
things like application windows, control-down-arrow. If you count from
the top, knowing which one this is, just interact, uncheck that box and
your life will be so much more peaceful.
9. If you stop interacting with the shortcuts table, you can
VO-right-arrow to the place where you can decide how the tab key
behaves. Or you can just close with Command-W and enjoy your Mac life.
Anyway, there may be an easier path, but I hope this made sense and did
some good.

Can I just ask, what does everyone use Control up and or down arrow to do?
Mission Control has come up only very seldom with me, usually because of a typo

Kevin,

I know there is an iPhone app called "Voice Changer" that will do this, but I
can't imagine any legitimate job position which would require this as an
initial part of the interview process. That sounds very fishy to me. however,
please check out that app, which is mentioned as a way to have fun with your

I hope this helps.

Safari questions with ML

2012-08-07 Thread Veronica Elsea
Hi everyone!
First, I thought I'd respond to the discussion on tables. The one I encounter
is on my bank's web site. I can find the table and VO-right-arrow through each
item. When I'm on the first column of a row, the VO-R command also reads the
whole row to me. I can't figure out how to bop straight down a column though.
But at least the information is all there.
And I so appreciate those of you who reported the apparent bug here. I was
beginning to think I was losing my mind. I just can't seem to quite figure out
where I land and when I need to interact and when I don't. I don't remember
having this issue in Lion but granted, I only used it a little bit because I
was waiting for Mountain Lion before really getting going on this Macbook.
The other thing I've apparently lost track of is how to quickly do a google
search. I have figured out that if I open Safari and just stay on the tool bar,
I can type a url or a search term. I then VO-right-arrow to the html content
area where I interact. But it sure seemed to me that there was a keystroke or
something that went easily into that google search. But I just can't find it
anywhere.
But boy I'd sure love a good tutorial and demo of really using Safari in ML. I
did create an activity which turns on Quick Nav when I go into Safari, and I
was afraid that this was what was messing up my browsing experience.
So I will await further news and see how far I get in the meantime. But thanks
so much to all of you who are so on top of all of this stuff. I look forward to
doing my part to pay forward. In the meantime, I'm open to all Safari
suggestions. Thanks.

Re: Getting Mission Control out of the way.

2012-08-07 Thread Veronica Elsea
Mark, it comes up when you hit the control key to silence VO, as in starting to
read the subject, date and all the info for an email message. If you then hit
the down-arrow too quickly, intending to go to the next message, bingo! You've
opened Mission control. I did this a lot in the early days of learning this
keyboard. In trying to type something like VO-down-arrow, all you have to do is
slightly miss a finger press and hey look! There it is again.
In my case, since it was something I knew I'd never want, I sure couldn't see
tripping over the thing, no matter how infrequently it happened.
So that's my story. Have fun.

Hi. I recommend Trillion for Facebook Chat because it also monitors news feeds

Hi Veronica,

Well, thanks for this. I've inadvertently activated Mission Control and am
glad to get rid of it. I had two keystrokes to deal with, Control-Up and
Control-Down Arrow. I could uncheck the boxes without interacting, so not sure
why you had to do so, but the end result was the same for both of us, that's
what counts. Thanks again.

Re: Getting Mission Control out of the way.

2012-08-07 Thread Teresa Cochran
Before I disabled the Mission Control keystroke, it would come up every time I
used VO-up-arrow, which contains the control-up-arrow keystroke. That's
probably what's happening in a lot of cases.

Setting activities

2012-08-07 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi folks,
I'm not having much luck setting up an activity for Safari. All I want is that
when Safari starts, quicknav be turned on and turned off again when I leave
Safari.
I've gone into VO Utility with vo f8.
I've chosen activity which is the last row in the table.
I've entered Safari in the first row of the activities table. I've checked the
"additional settings to include" checkbox.
I've checked quick nav.

And yet quick nav doesn't turn on when I go into Safari. Should any of the
other boxes be checked? I checked keyboard also, but this makes no difference.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks for your help.

Lisette

Hi,

did you actually pick the activity to be used with Safari? You didn't mention
that step in your message.
