Page up? Page down?
Hi all, Just a short, little question: In the VO help keyboard commands for navigating around documents, I seethe command for Page up is VO Page up, and for page down, the command is VO Page Down. My problem is that there are no Page up or Page down keys on my MBP like on a regular or full-sized keyboard. What keys or keyboard commands do I use for page up and page down on my MBP? Hi Johny Page up is fn shift up arrow, page down is fn shift down arrow. With the vo keys. A bit of a fist full in my view but that's what it is. The keyboard helper announces them if you want to practice getting it right. On a Mac laptop, Page up is FN-up arrow, page down is FN-down arrow. Home is FN-left arrow and End is FN-right arrow. Lisette, the VO command VO-Shift-Page up is either Go left one page or Previous paragraph depending on the situation. The VO page up command is VO-Page up. Re-setting Vo in Safari
Hi again folks, I am having such a time at navigating around web pages in Safari. It may be perhaps because I messed around too much with the Vo settings trying to figure out a way that works best for me on how to get around web pages Well I have been playing around and changing things so much over the last year that I'm afraid that I have gotten too far away from the original Safari/VO setup that I need help getting back to where I first got my MBP. Is there a way to re-set my BO / Safari relationship back to when things were brand new? Perhaps then I will be able to better learn how to navigate Safari more proficiently. Hope I was at least somewhat clear in what I am asking. Thanks for posting your always helpful suggestions and instructions. Re: Re-setting Vo in Safari
Dear Johnny, Open Voiceover utility with vo+f8. Then with vo+m, go to your menu bar and move to the right to find "file". Then down arrow to open the menu. If you arrow down the options you have there, you will find a few choices for resetting various preferences of Voiceover. I've not done it myself - have had no need for it, but it seems fairly close to what you want. Notice that under the same "file' menu item, you have an option to export your setup preferences into a file and save it where you wish on your hard drive so that you may import them again if something goes wrong and you want to get back to the best setup you had. Navigating in Safari takes a lot of learning but you will get there. Hope this helps. Re: OCR with iOS devices with the VueScan app and wireless scanner
Very fool, I'd just like to point out though that if you run into one of these crappy touch screen printers, you can hack in using the web interface. My limitted experience with the hp web interfaces has been good over all. You just need to look in the manual or get some one at the store to tell you the printer's default network name. You don't even really need the ip addewss, althought that's not hard to get either especially with a modern mac or win7 computer. Best, ERIK burggraafEbony ConsultingI am currently on the road and staying in touch on my handheld. Esther wrote: Hi All, I use the Prizmo app with my iPhone 4's camera to OCR text. However, recently I've been using a wireless scanner on my network that I control with an iOS app named VueScan Mobile to send scans to the camera roll on my iPhone or iPad, and then using OCR apps like Prizmo or TextGrabber that can import images from the camera roll to OCR. This works pretty nicely when I'm at my home network and want to get an OCR of a simple text document without going go my computer. Now the gotcha is that the all-in-one printer/scanner/copier that I'm using for this is the HP Photosmart D110a, which is one of the first iOS AirPrint enabled printers. And I have to say that I think this is a terrible printer to set up from the point of view of accessibility, since it uses a touch screen with no tactile features or audio feedback to select options and input the IP address information. On the other hand, once it is set up (which you cannot do without sighted assistance), you can work with this wirelessly as well as through a USB connection. I'm using this printer because it was free with a MacBook Air purchase that was made last year. I think that Apple has discontinued the free or $99 reimbursement printer program since then. If you want to check whether this app will work with your wireless printer, you can check the listed supported printers at the developer's "VueScan Mobile" web page at: http://www.hamrick.com/mob.html Alternatively, you can download the free version of the VueScan Mobile app, which does not have support for the high resolution option that is needed for OCR, but which will otherwise work. In any case, this HP D110a printer, along with a number of other HP, Canon, and Epson wireless printers, is automatically detected when you start up the VueScan Mobile iOS app. There's a very simple "VueScan Mobile" screen with an "Options" button and a "Scan" button at the bottom of the page. The "Options" button lets you select the scanner (in case there is more than one on your network), choose the resolution (which you want to be "high" for OCR), select the scan mode ("text" for OCR, but also settings for black and white or color photo), and an "append" switch button that can be set to "on" for multipage documents. So to access the setup options, I would do a four finger tap on the bottom half of the screen to go to the last element -- the "Scan" button -- and flick left to the "Options" button and double tap. (These two buttons are just above the "Home" button, but you have to move up and to the left to get to the "Options" button, or up and to the right from the "Home" button to get to the "Scan" button directly by touch.) There is one unlabeled button in the top right corner of the "VueScan Mobile" screen, which is an info button to access the "About" screen with the version number and an option to "Email Problem Report". I use the two finger double tap and hold to label this as "Info". After the triple tone a "Label Element" window should appear that lets you type in your custom label in the text field. Flick right the "Save" button and double tap to save your label. Once you have set up your options, double tap the "Scan" button. It takes maybe 20 seconds for the scan to complete. You won't hear anything announced until the scan is finished, when you'll hear "1 of 1". However, if you do a two-finger flick up read all, you'll get an announcement "in progress" at the end. I just wait now until I hear the "1 of 1". The page with the scanned results has a "Save" button in the top right, which has options for "Camera Roll", "Send Email…", "Print", and "Other…" To OCR the page, you want to choose "Camera Roll", so you can open the jpeg image in an OCR app that lets you select inputs from your camera roll images. The other options will send an email with your image as an attachment, bring up a printer options menu if you have an AirPrint enabled printer on your network, or open the image in another app that is capable of accepting either the PDF or jpeg output. On my devices this defaults to iBooks, but this would simply store an image version of the contents in that app. There are a few other buttons on the scanned output screen. There is a "Scan" button in the top left corner to allow you to return to the "VueScan Mobile" screen for more scanning. At the bottom of the scr
Re: Unity Mode in VMWARE
When in unity each of your Windows apps seems to just be another Mac app when you command-tab through your open applications. In addition to your launched Windows apps you should find VMWare Fusion as one of the running apps. Switch to that. Where I got stuck is you have to tell it which VM you want to work with. In the Virtual Machine Library window there is a tool bar followed by a scroll area. If you interact with the scroll area you'll find all your virtual machines. The tricky bit was that I couldn't easily select the machine and until it was selected the View menu items were dimmed out. Space, enter, VO-space all failed to select. I ended up doing VO-shift-space to select the machine and them I could doa VO-m to get to the view menu and then pick single window or hit control+command+u. I don't usually run Unity but I don't recall it being this hard to turn it off before. Is there an actualy date for Mountain Lion yet?
Hello everyone, I am not sure what is normal for Apple when it comes to releasing new operating systems but do they release the date before hand or do they wait till the ad of? Re: Is there an actualy date for Mountain Lion yet?
All Apple has said so far is sometime in July. They released a near final version to developers so the public version should only be a couple weeks, especially since there are only a couple weeks left in July :) CB On 7/10/12 11:31 AM, Blinkin wrote: Hello everyone, I am not sure what is normal for Apple when it comes to releasing new operating systems but do they release the date before hand or do they wait till the ad of? Best Way to Navigate This Group With Voiceover
Hey all, I apologize if this has already been discussed, but I am finding it almost impossible to navigate Google Groups with Voiceover, and would love to hear what people find is the best way? I have signed up to receive emails in the forums but still find that very hard to get through everything and lose focus a lot. When attempting to navigate the threads on the website there is nothing listed under headings and auto webspots pulls up very little. In the email forum recap the rotor only offers me characters, words, and navigation. Am I missing something here? Also how do you respond to a post in the forum as none of the links seem to be clickable through the daily email. Thanks, and I assume this topic has been brought up before so if someone can just point me in the right direction to a topic that has discussed this I would really appreciate it. Nature Sounds App and my External Hard Drive
Hi, everybody, I just had a really quick question. I regularly used, and sometimes still use, the Vision Australia podcasts for learning various aspects of the Mac. He mentions on there that he has a nature sounds app (with instrumental music, fountains, birds, etc). it's extremely pleasant and relaxing, as he demonstrated the way to adjust the Mac volume separate from the VoiceOver volume. My completely frivolous question is, does anyone know of this app or one like it? And on a completely unrelated note, my external hard drive may simply be dead. It was unable to partition because it "could not unmount," and when it does try and copy files it will get part of the way through then say there was an error and the problem may be temporary, but I can try a repair. The repair failed for whatever reason, a few times. The latest error I got was that it could not write to a block of the drive or something like that. I'm really not sure what to do about it. I bought it back in November. I always thought it was just a problem with VoiceOver, but now I suspect it's more a problem with the drive itself. it's a Western Digital 5000gb Mypassport. I did notice my computer tries to about half lock up when I click on the partition tab, though. I thought it was just Voiceover hanging, but of course I couldn't really explain that to the tech support guy. He thought it might be a faulty USB connection. Curious, curious. I was going to try starting my computer up with the STartup disk, as I read on one of the Mac Support pages, but that never seemed to work to get Voiceover running. That is, I would hold down "c" with the CD in, but the computer would go straight to the login screen. I would hold down shift, I think it is, and I'm sure it worked, because it never went to the login screen (that is, VO never came on), but I was also never able to get VO running. I read that if partitioning won't work the normal way that sometimes it will work from the startup disk, as if you were going to partition your hard drive, but instead choosing the external drive. Again, the two subject lines are completely unrelated. I've tried to be as clear and concise as possible; it really is a confusing/frustrating issue. Thanks so much, guys. Re: Re-setting Vo in Safari
As regards new OS installation, if you choose to migrate your settings from the previous version of your OS which you can do via the migration assistant application from either your time machine backup or another mac computer, then your Voiceover settings will be important too. If, however, you choose to do a clean installation which erases your hard drive, then you will have to configure your Voiceover again unless, of course, you copy the exported Voiceover settings onto a usb pen drive and import them from there. Your exported Voiceover settings file is like another file which you can choose to export to a folder or drive of your choosing. You are right about this list: we have all learnt from each other, and I have certainly been generously supported through my tribulations with Voiceover and the mac OS when I switched from Windows. Keeping an Application in the Background

Re: Firefox on the Mac
I will add that the reason your student has been told to use Firefox with Blackboard is probably because of compatibility with the Blackboard system. Ideally, most university websites and related services (e.g. Blackboard) will use Internet Explorer, which I am almost certain has very little support for VoiceOver. Re: Firefox on the Mac
Hi, I use Safari or Google Chrome on the Mac to access blackboard, both of these are fine and there are no issues. I was of the understanding that Firefox does not yet work other than a beyta version on the map, although I am looking forward to the day when it does properly. For blackboard it is probably best to use Safari for now, as although chrome is good, it's not totally there yet. Though chrome is probably second to Firefox currently. But please someone correct me if Firefox is fully available and accessible, because I would like to use Firefox myself if it is usable now. Hi, Command control u gets you into unity mode. I don't know if it's a toggle, but try that first. If it doesn't help, command control s takes you into single window mode. Then if that fails, command control enter toggles between windows taking up the screen, or being a tiny window inside the fusion interface. Hth, Paul. iMap mail
Hello, I have a ton of questions and concerns. I want to switch my google blindmaclover mail account from pop to iMap. I went to the website and iMap and Pop are both enabled. However, for the past three years I have been using POP through apple mail. 1. I went over to the google mail website and noticed that all of my e-mails that I deleted via apple mail are still on google. Which is the priority account, google, or apple mail? What I mean is if I start an iMap account for blindmaclover in apple mail, will all of those thousands of e-mails transfer over to my computer? I want to switch to iMap so that I can use my mac and iDevices and they will all match. Currently I do not use the mail app on my iDevices because using POP just isn't practical for me because they don't "sync." 2. Is there a book or anything to help me and walk me through this process. I have sooo many questions and concerns. I've heard of the take control books but I've never purchased any and I do not know if he has a book on google mail and apple products. 3. What about all of the e-mails I already have on my Mac, I do not want to loose all the saved messages I have? 4. What about rules, I have rules set up in apple mail, do I have to set those up in google instead? Thanks and I apologize for my ignorance on this issue. I understand that you all don't have the time to hold my hand and walk me through this but maybe there is a resource someone can pass along to me. Thanks so very much, Christina, who is wondering if I should just start from scratch with a brand new google mail address. :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. airport express and profiles
Dear listers, I have an airport express, and I love it. One thing I would like to do though, is have profiles. The express manual says that it can be done. To create a profile, I should first select my airport express in the list, on the main screen of the airport utility on the mac. I do this by interacting with the airport express group inside airport utility, finding my airport express and hitting vo space on it. Then, I should find an option to create or manage profiles, inside the base stations pull down menu heading. But when I open the base station menu, using vo m for the menu bar, going right to the base station menu and then examining it downlwards, I don't find these options. Just show passwords, which is dimmed, and restore to factory defaults. What am I doing wrong here? I would like to create profiles inside my airport express, because at home I use it to airplay music, having the airport express join an already existing wifi network, while at work, I need the airport express to act as an access point. All I do there, is leave its music line out jack alone, plug the airport express into the wall, insert the rj 45 network cable into it, and then have it create a secure network for myself and my laptop. So at home it joins another network, and at work it creates one, which are totally different settings. I'm sort of tired of reprogramming the airport express every night, now that I've used it so nicely and found out how well it serves. But this is getting frustrating. Resetting it to factory defaults, and at home, reinstating my home setup, and before going to bed for the day after, reprogramming it back to the work setup. How do you guys deal with profiles? I cannot find how to create a profile inside the airport express, nor how to switch from one to the other. Hope to hear from you if you know how to setup and use airport express profiles. Adding to this, I think it better now that own companies make there products accessible in this case web browsers. Rather than waiting and depending on special scripts to built for the programme. I too will look forward to firefox becoming accessible on the Mac. Apparently there biggest bug at present is the annoying yes I guess people can guess it… the wonderful "BUSY MESSAGES!" Re: Is there an actualy date for Mountain Lion yet?
Hi guys. As far as I and many others following the topic have seen, is that the final version will be released around 2 weeks after the Golden Master has been released. This happened this night (norwegian time). So my bet is that if all goes well, we'll have it around 15:00 GMT+1 (norwegian time again), wich was the case with Lion. -David On Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 5:46 PM, Chris Blouch wrote: > All Apple has said so far is sometime in July. Re: airport express and profiles
Hi, I believe that the interface has changed with the new Airport Utility so this needs to be done differently. Try this: • Open Airport Utility. • Press VO-space on the Airport Express you wish to create the Profile for. • Press the Edit button so that the various configuration tabs appear. • Go up to the File menu and choose Export. • Save the exported config file in a convenient place like on your Desktop. • When you're at your other location, set it up appropriately and do the same thing. Once you have the two config files, you can Import them as you need them, although you'll need to restart after each import. HTH. Later... Not hearing, "Selected header cell" in Numbers
Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out how I can avoid hearing, "selected header cell," in Numbers when moving from row to row and column to column. I want to make a foreign language glossary for my different translations, but that is extra information that I don't really need. Intermediate verbosity doesn't change it at all, and low verbosity says, "header cell, with nothing else, which may or may not be alright; I've not figured that out yet. And also, since I use a Braille display, I assume there's a good way not to clutter the Braille display with unnecessary information? Just want to report a new version of VLC Media Player 2.0.2 is out for Mac OSX
Hi all, as of today, July 10th 2012 in my case I was informed of a new update to VLC Media Player for my Mac. It said in the HTML window that it addresses a number of updates since 2.x came out. For me it fixed the issue where if I highlight a set of track from bottom to top and issued the open command it now plays in the correct order. From top to bottom e.g. like an Audio CD in a CD Player. So if that's one bug I wonder what else has been fixed. Just wanted to send this out in case you haven't check for updates recently for that app or of course if your happy with what you got then by all means, just ignore this message! Re: Not hearing, "Selected header cell" in Numbers
Hi Harry. Please be aware that the default in Numbers is one header column and one row header. Therefore, as a precaution, you might want to insert one column on the left in column a and a row at the top before you take out your headers and change it to no headers. I'm afraid if you don't do that first, then you might accidentally erase your top row and the first column. Then after you have taken out the headers, you can erase the extra row and column you put in as a precaution.
