Re: searching mail
Hi. Let's see if I can explain how it works, because it's a bit tricky to explain: After you've entered a name of a person in the search field in the toolbar, you can use the up and down arrows to choose where you wanna search. You can choose between the body text, the from field and the subject field. Please note that when you've chosen one of these categories, you can't spell what you've writen by using the arrow keys. The text you've written will be shown as a group. The reason for that is because you can make multiple groups. Let's take an example to clear up any confusion my explanation might give: You can find this mail by doing the following: Copy my name to your clipboard because of the danish letter in my name: Søren Jensen Go to your inbox and find the search field in the toolbar Paste in my name, press the down arrow to VOiceover says: From: Søren Jensen, popup button press return and then press the spacebar to make a new search category. Type this subject: Searching mail, and then press the down arrow again until you come to: subject and press the return key again. Now you have these two categories which you can read by pressing the left and right arrow keys. Now, back to your question on how to search in mails in your trash folder: When you've typed in the name of the person you wanna search for, chosen that you wanna search in the from field and then pressed the return key, stop interacting with the toolbar and then move the VO cursor right to the favorite group. I'm sorry if I got that item wrong in english since my system is currently in danish. Interact with this group and there you can choose what folder you wanna see the search results from. I hope my explanation was understandable and helpful. Please let me know if there's something you don't understand or if you have more questions. Copying a disk
Hi I want to make an identical copy of a disk. I understand I need to use the disk utility app in order tocreate a disk image on my hard drive, and then burn that onto a blank disk. In Disk Utility, do I just go into new/image? Or do I use open/image? Any steps gratefully received? I assume the app is accessible. It certainly looked pretty standard when I opened it up just now. Daniel is quite correct. There is no way of navigating menus on a DVD using a Mac. The version FS has is; as I understand it, not much good at all. the issue is this. choppy VO on apple tv
I wasn't sure which list to send this to, since it concerns an A tv, not a Mac or a Phone. I'm just wondering if there has ever been found a solution to the problem of VO being very choppy when used on the apple tv. I've tried this with the remote that comes with the a tv first gen and also with the remote app that works on my iPhone. And the choppy speech is really a problem. I recall some people having the problem earlier. It seemed to get a little better for me, but I haven't been using the A tv much lately except in its role as a substitute for an airport express playing music through the speakers attached to the system where the a tv is. But this morning I decided I wanted to watch something on netflix, and I found the speech was so choppy that it really made navigation difficult. Any hints on how to solve this would be really appreciated. It seemed worse when using the remote app, but since I have issues getting the little remote to do what I want, I'm apparently not pointing it precisely correctly, I was really hoping to make the remote app work so as to ditch that finicky remote. Creating Documents on an iPod
Hello, First of all, thank you for all the good information I have gained while lurking on this list. I bought a Macbook Pro a few weeks ago and am gradually getting used to it. I know I will have a lot of questions for you about that soon. I also have an iPod touch which I bought at the end of last year but I have never done much with it due to lack of time. Thanks to the friendly people at my local Apple Store that has now been upgraded to IOS 5 and I have managed to make my way through the setup procedure. I also bought a Bluetooth keyboard which has now made entering textmuch easier. Now to my question, or rather questions. I will be going on holiday in Scotland shortly and thought of taking the iPod and keyboard with me to keep a simple diary. I will not need all the functionality of the Macbook so this seemed a lighter and more compact choice. Are there any accessible equivalents to Text Edit that run on the iPod? I also see that there is a version of Pages for IOS devices. Would this be a good choice? Are there other programs you would suggest? Also, is it straightforward to transfer the documents back to the Macbook? I presume I would use iTunes but I have not really got to grips with that yet. I would greatly appreciate your comments and look forward to receiving them. Re: Creating Documents on an iPod
Hi, yes, you would use iTunes to transfer your documents created in pages to your Mac with iTunes. May I suggest trying the Notes app that came on your touch? This might meet your needs, and you wouldn't need to pay the $10 for the pages app. Especially saince you said you just want to keep a simple diary. copying files to certain folders.
hi all. As ive mentioned, i've been using mac only for a week so far so excuse me, if this question is stupid. I tried to copy an audio book to my digital audio book player one night and it failed. The folder I was copyiing kept appearing in the root (main) folder of the memory card. I tried to navigate on the folder I wanted to and expand it and interact with it but nothing helped. I also tried dragging the file into that folder. My question is, How I can copy that file or folder in to certain folder? Re: Upgrading a macbook pro from late 2010
Hi, You need a philips double 0 screw driver to open the bottom of your Macbook. There are 10 screws I believe. As to the type of RAM, 1066 or 1067MHZ DDR 3. When you open up the Macbook, you will find that the RAM is stacked 1 upon another. There are a lever to each side of the RAM. You pull these apart gentely, and the RAM will pop up. hth Ricardo Walker rica...@appletothecore.info Twitter:@apple2thecore www.appletothecore.info On Jun 24, 2012, at 5:56 PM, David Hole wrote: > Hi guys, and thanks for answering. > > Do you know wich RAM i have to use, or how I can find it out? > Wich kind of screw drivers do I need for a RAM upgrade? > > -David > > CJ Daniel wrote: >> David, >> >> I, recently, upgraded the RAM in my 2008 MBP by myself, with a little >> sighted assistant from my 17-year-old. Hi Mary I don't know, but I had something like this happen with a CD player and a tv. The CD player with the speakers was flakey, but the tv, on the same speakers worked fine. It sounds like you're gettting warmer. Maybe it's that cable thing that connects to the Apple TV. The dictation is tied to Siri, so if there are problems with the SIRI server, it will effect dictation. At least, this has been my experience. Re: choppy VO on apple tv
Wow. I'm at a loss for words. That's really weird. I never have experienced that problem. What speed're you running the speech, slow, normal, fast, or fastest? What if you turn off Voiceover, then turn it back on. Does that help? How long have you had that Apple TV remote? I wonder if your battery's going dead in the thing. The fact you don't seem to have the issue with the remote app... ok, I know that app doesn't work that greatly, but still, the point is, you said, corr3ect me if I'm mistaking, that you don't have that issue there... that really makes me a bit intrigued. You're exactly right on all accounts. Yes, you would use ITunes to transfer, and yes, Pages works wonderfully! Chris. - Original Message - From: "Christopher Edwards" To: Sent: Sunday, June 24, 2012 4:19 PM Subject: Creating Documents on an iPod Hello, First of all, thank you for all the good information I have gained while lurking on this list. Re: choppy VO on apple tv
Stupdi questions but... Let's forget a minute about the receiver. What about the h d m i chord, could it be at falt? What if you play a regular DVD, or blue ray disc, or play something from your tv cable box, or vcr, or playstation/xbox if you all have one, etc etc. basically, something that doesn't get fed through the Apple TV, but, still that takes the TV to use. I ask this as maybe the HDMI cord came loose from the Apple TV or the TV itself, or maybe one of your red-white-yellow chords going to the receiver are lose on the TV side, although if other things from the TV are playing fine, then that probably isn't likely. Could the speakers be at falt? Check the alegator clips on the back of the receiver and be sure the wire hasn't fallen a ways out. Make sure they're pushed deep in the whole and clamped down tightly with the clip. What type of TV have you got? That, too may clue us in a bit. I mean, ok, Panasonic Plasma, or whatever, but specifically do you know the model? Finally, and God forbid this is the case, but if you feel the apple TV square box itself, does it feel warm/hot to the touch? I wonder if you got a processor/memory leakage somewhere. What firmware version are you running on the thing, and what generation Apple TV are we working with here? No, I have the issue with the remote app and the apple remote, so it isn't a problem with the apple remote. Re: Trouble with dictation
Gigi, I can't really say much about if this happens now, seeing I'm a dev on I O S 6, so thus am on N D A, but I can! legally say this: in I O S 5, which is the most current firmware readily available for the public, which I'm quite sure is what you have, I had this problem a fair amount, yes. Remember that even though dictation is not a part of Seri persey, it is actually ran through the same proxy server that Seri uses. With this said, basically in a more basic meaning... if the server is busy that Seri uses, which often times, it is, remember, Seri is? still in public beta... then dictation also isn't gonna work. Here's a little trick, if you don't wanna restart your IPhone that you can try that sometimes helps. This isn't exactly documented, and it's nothing I shouldn't be telling you. Why this works, I'm unfortunately not allowed to disclose but i can! at least tell you sometimes and actually, often times, it does. When this happens, go to settings, then go to general, and finally, Seri. You'll notice that you have 3 options. always, which is probably where it's now at, handset only, or off. If you switch it to handset only for about 5 seconds, then switch it back to always, then try using Seri, or dictation, either or, it should start to work again. Again, I'm not authorized to explain to you why this works, and I know it's kind a cock eyed. Trust me though, if you knew the reason, you'd understand. Subscribing to the viphone list [was Re: Viphone list]
Hi Stacey, I think it is possible for you to subscribe to the viphone list without having Google account by having the list owner or moderator add you directly to the subscription list. I'll dig up a recent post by Raul Gallego on this subject and append it. However, I don't think that you have control over your subscription that way -- if you want to stop receiving list mail probably your only option is to unsubscribe, and then to try to start subscribing as though you were a completely new user again, with the same waiting period if there's a backlog on approving new user subscriptions. As Kawal explained, when you create a Google account, you do not need to also create a gmail account for mail. Also, if you have multiple email accounts, you can choose which of these accounts you want to be associated with receiving the list email posts, or change your email address if your current one terminates, and you can manage your subscriptions (no mail, digest format, etc.) from your Google account. Creating a Google account does require negotiating a Captcha, but you only have to do it once. There is an audio Captcha option on the web page, but I find those pretty bad, too, although it was manageable. I'll add that the default page you are linked to if you choose to create an account from the page where you are prompted to log in to the viphone list now makes it appear as though you have to create a gmail account when you create your Google account. You don't need to do this, and you also don't need to supply your phone or SMS number to activate your account, despite being encouraged to do so for "security" purposes. Here's the URL to use to create a new account without also creating a gmail account: https://accounts.google.com/newaccount?hl=en You need to supply your current email address and the password you wish to create for your account, retyped to verify it. And apparently you must now supply your date of birth (so they can verify you are over 13). That email address is being used as your unique login for your Google account. If you need to change your email address for receiving mail at a later time, or add another email account that you'd prefer to use for your subscription instead, you'll also be able to manage this yourself within your Google account. Make sure to check the box for accepting the terms of service before you press the "Create my account" button. Once you've created your account, return to the viphone list page: http://groups.google.com/group/viphone Use the link for "Apply for group membership" and sign in with your Google account login (which is the non-gmail email address you used to create the account) and password. I'd add a note saying that you were previously a member of the list, which they'll be able to verify. Re: Creative Writing Apps?
Hi CJ, You might want to take a look at Scrivener, which has had several posts in the archives from people who have used this app. Here's a link to a review that Austin Seraphin posted on his blog: http://behindthecurtain.us/2011/09/07/scrivener/ Also, the Literature and Latte site that makes scrivener has a 30-day free trial download page: http://www.literatureandlatte.com/trial.php They now have a Windows version of Scrivener, too. And I think they also offer an education discount, but you may have to supply additional information. HTH.
