Re: Accessible Fruitmachine is published

2012-05-15 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi there.
This is a really good game, and this comes from someone who is very, very picky
when it comes to apps and games. I don't care so much for swiping down or
shaking the phone to start, but if you add it, please make it a togglable
option so that we can play however we want. What i would really love to see
though is either an online score board or game center implementation so we can
see how we do in comparison to others.
On a totally different and somewhat off-topic note, Jonathans game ilustrates
perfectly how one can make a mainstream gps program more accessible. How, you
wonder. Well, there is apparently a way for an app to communicate and send
specific info directly to Voiceover that in its turn can speak that same info
to us. Imagine then Navigon, Tomtom or another gps solution send data about
streets, upcoming and current taken from the map, and there may be other things
that could be sent dynamically to VO without having to be recorded by a
built-in voice and the best thing of all, sighted people wouldn't need to know
the blind specific features were there. With an "if", "else" statement in the
code, you could query if Voiceover is on, and if it is, enable the blind
specific features and if not, use it as a normal gps app.
Sorry for this deviation, now back to normal broadcast.
/Krister

Hi,

It sounds like others have given good advice.

As my wife will attest, I'm not good at casino games, have lost many shirts
there .

That's why I love this game :)

Re: Accessible Fruitmachine is published

2012-05-15 Thread Jonathan Chacón
Hello Krister,

I will add Game center support for version 1.5. I have to develop some modules
before. Thanks for your opinion and, please, post a review in the App store.
The reviews in the App store encourages me to develop more accessible apps.

Well, about your ideas for a GPS app, I know all documentation about
accessibility API for iOS and you are right about the process for linking
VoiceOver with a visual interface.
I could develop an accessible GPS for iPhone but I haven't enough resources for
that project. I have no geopositional database, enough time and enough money
for the project.
An accessible GPS app is a giant project for an only and lonely developer

I can only develop in my free time that's why I can't develop apps full time.
If you can offer me a position in Tom tom company for solving accessibility
bugs i will thank you. LOL

I am happy you enjoy the game. If you have more suggestions, please, send me an
e-Mail with them.

Regards
Jonathan Chacón

VMWare Fusion and Lion 10.7.4

2012-05-15 Thread Paul Hunt
Hello everyone. Last night I upgraded from Lion 10.7.3 to Lion 10.7.4. I
currently run VM Ware Fusion 3.1.3 because I would have to pay to upgrade to
the next version.
Now, When I start up VM Ware Fusion I get the following error messages.

Unable to retrieve Kernel Zone Sizes.
Failed to Initialize Monitor Device.
Cannot find a valid Peer process to connect to.

Have any of you been able to recover from these errors?
Do you have contact information for Technical support contacts for VMWare? Are
there any resources that document the fix for this problem?

Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

I hope you have a nice day.

OK, I don't mean to be rude, but I don't get this. downloaded the game last

you get three of the same fruit? Is that all there is to it, or am I missing
something?

Re: VMWare Fusion and Lion 10.7.4

2012-05-15 Thread Braille
The easiest method is to update your VM to the next version. Choose check
update on the menu bar and it will find the next version.
HOpe this works.

something to share: air print activator

2012-05-15 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi listers,

I'm glad I can share something back, now that I received so much good help over
time from this list.

You can print from your iphone. I think you will have seen this already. You
sometimes find an action button, for example while viewing a document from
within mail etc, and then you have the print button. However, this does not
work with normal printers, except with eleven or so dedicated models, because
of an Apple restriction.

Well, no more. Yesterday I printed off several documents from my phone, to a
normal, non supported airprint printer. And it works like a charm. What you
need is an iphone, a mac, and a printer attached to the mac. As long as you
share the printer on your mac, the iphone can see it if you want.

There's a program for Lion and sn, called airprint activator. Just google it.
If you happen to find airprint hactivator, so with an h at the start, then that
is the older version and there is a newer one out there, without the h, called
airprint activator, with an ay, as in alpha, at the start. This little utility
is free, and it does not want to alter system files in any way, so installing
it won't ask your admin password on the mac. It only adds one or 2 lines to
some config file, I forgot where that is, but it is documented if you're
curious.

Once you find airprint activator on google, download it. You will then have a
dmg. You don't need to copy stuff out of there. Just open the dmg, set it to
list mode if yu want, and then run the airprint activator installer app. Then
close your disk image, and eject it from your desktop.

>From now on, you will have a new item inside system preferences for
>airprinting. What I did not do right the first time, was enable AirPrint
>activation. It's 2 labels with a toggle button in between. From what follows
>later on the screen, you can see if this switch is then on or off. Once you
>turn the switch to on, it works. If you have not already done so, share your
>printer. It will then appear in a grayed out table inside the preference pane
>for airprint activator, so you know which printer is being advertised on your
>local lan wifi. The table of advertised printers is gray because the utility
>itself decides if you have your printer shared correctly. If so, it appears in
>the table. If not, then sharing is the problem. So you cannot add or delete
>printers from the airprin utility yourself.

Now to print from your phone, leave your mac running and have your printer
turned on. From the phone, find a print button for some document. Hit it, and a
new little dialog comes up, where the first button lets you choose to which
printer to print. Double tap it and choose your, mac connected shared printer
on the phone. You will return to the print dialog in the phone, where ok will
send the document over wifi to your shared mac printer.

Not a revolution, but handy to know and have. I donated immediately after I
found the program to work so well. In our household, it is a much appreciated
little tool.

Hth,
Paul.

Re: Accessible Fruitmachine is published

2012-05-15 Thread Jonathan Chacón
Hello Donna,

the game is the classic slot machine which you can find in at any casino.
Your target is get the highest score.

there are three reels which start to spin when you press the start button. The
reels will stop after some seconds. If you have good luck, you will get a good
combination of symbols in the reels.

well, you can find a help button at left botton corner of all views in the
game. The help function gives you information about each moment of the game

if you have any suggestion or any question, please, send me an e-Mail

I agree that shake-to-start would help.

Also, I am experiencing an error where VO is sometimes interrupted when

Hi Jonathan,

thanks for responding. So, I guess this is my question. Last night, for
example, there were a couple of times when I had two of the same fruit. Is
there any way to just spin the wheel that doesn't match? In other words, is
there any player involvement other than just pushing the start button? I read
the help section, but didn't find an answer to this.

 well,

You can read help about the game using the button at left bottom corner of
 the screen.

This game depends on your lucky. Press the start button and cross your
 fingers for a good combination.

You can play longer or shorter plays changing the number of turns for a
play. See the settings button at right bottom of the screen.

when you get an special combination of symbols, for example: the two same
symbols in a turn or an special combination of symbols you can access for
a new kind of game. Use the help button for learning about it.

 I hope it help you

Re: Changing the way files are listed

2012-05-15 Thread Steve Holmes
For me, the finder has always sorted my files by ascending order by name. You
might use VO-Comma to open finder preferencees and look for any sorting
options. Also, look in the View menu from the menu bar while in the finder.
there you should be able to check the default view and possibly the sort option
there also. I'm in mail right now so can't look immediately at the finder
options to confirm these. Anyway, this will give you the opportunity to
explore around your system a bit more.

Steve,
Thanks,
I'll do that.
I really like the mac. Once I catch on to something with it, it's really simple.
I love that.

Re: Accessible Fruitmachine is published

Hi
Yes you can spin only one wheel. As soon as 2 of the same symbol comes up,
there pops up some buttons labeled "block left reel", "hold center reel" and
"hold right reel". Find the reels that have the same symbol and press
corresponding buttons then press the start button and only one reel will spin.
Hope this helps.

This is a really good game, and this comes from someone who is very, very

togglable option so that we can play however we want. What i would really

On a totally different and somewhat off-topic note, Jonathans game
ilustrates perfectly how one can make a mainstream gps program more
accessible. How, you wonder. Well, there is apparently a way for an app to
communicate and send specific info directly to Voiceover that in its turn
can speak that same info to us. Imagine then Navigon, Tomtom or another
gps solution send data about streets, upcoming and current taken from the
map, and there may be other things that could be sent dynamically to VO
without having to be recorded by a built-in voice and the best thing of
all, sighted people wouldn't need to know the blind specific features were
there. With an "if", "else" statement in the code, you could query if
Voiceover is on, and if it is, enable the blind specific features and if
not, use it as a normal gps app.
Sorry for this deviation, now back to normal broadcast.

Hello Paul.

I can't help with all your questions but, if you go to VMVMWARE.com, log in
with your current customer number or user ID making sure that you select the
appropriate country, you can then go to the support section and log your
support needs.

Take care, hope that helps.

Re: VMWare Fusion and Lion 10.7.4

2012-05-15 Thread Chris Blouch
As far as I know 3.1.3 is the latest version before you have to pay to
upgrade to the 4.x series. From what I've gathered, official support for
OSX Lion only started with 4.x so you won't get much love from VMWare
about issues with 3.1.3 not working. 3.1.3 was released May 31, 2011 and
3.0 in general came out in October 2009, so it's had a good run. The
fact that Fusion 3 still worked on a version of OSX that wasn't even
released until July 2011 was pretty surprising. There were a number of
deals in the $30 range to upgrade from 3 to 4 last year but by now all
those are pretty much over. Best I could find were in the $45 range with
free shipping. B&H Photo has it for $43:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=vmware+fusion+4&N=0&InitialSearch=yes

Unless somebody is running a special, that's probably about the cheapest
out there. There were a lot of complaints about the lack of an upgrade
price in the VMWare Fusion forums but in the end they said it was still
cheaper than Parallels which has had more paid upgrades over the same
period of time. Of course Parallels doesn't work with voiceover so
that's not even an option.

Re: Boot Camp and Voiceover

2012-05-15 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi,

I am not aware of any way to do that, but I can tell you how I access the
Windows partition on my Mac.
Basically, when I hold down the option key and start my Mac, 2 options appear
on the screen.
One is to go into the Mac OS partition and the other is for the Windows
partition.
By default, your arrow is on the Mac option, so if you just move right with the
right arrow key and hit return, you'll be able to access the Windows partition.

upgrade to the 4.x series. From what I've gathered, official support for OSX
Lion only started with 4.x so you won't get much love from VMWare about

3.0 in general came out in October 2009, so it's had a good run. The fact
that Fusion 3 still worked on a version of OSX that wasn't even released

$30 range to upgrade from 3 to 4 last year but by now all those are pretty
much over. Best I could find were in the $45 range with free shipping. B&H

Re: Shortwave?

2012-05-15 Thread Chris Blouch
Ahh, but there are so many frequencies and what you get is highly
dependent on where your receiver is. So it's not quite like somebody
just plugging in their FM radio to a streaming audio server for each
city. Well, I guess it could be done that way but shortwave is such a
small niche I don't think they could make that commercially viable. In
poking around it seemed like anything that would have a sufficient
audiance to be worth streaming the shortwave for already had live audio
streaming from the broadcaster (BBC, VOA etc). That said, if you google
around for streaming shortwave radio there are a number if individual
sites that have made web interfaces to the audio of their shortwave rig.

You mean actually picking up and tuning in shortwave radio on your
phone? I suspect that isn't possible because the antennas in your phone
are designed for the wifi and GSM frequency ranges, not shortwave. Also,
other than some really high-end digital tuners, most shortwave gear is
set up to 'tune' a particular subset of the shortwave radio frequency
range with a physical variable capacitor while the wifi and mobile
voice/data radio stuff is set to fixed frequencies. If they can't bake
in an FM tuner, I doubt they could do the more niche shortwave. Maybe
there is a re-broadcaster that streams something but other than the
current time and a few other common frequencies part of the fun of
shortwave was to see what you could pick up on a bounce from around the
world. The internet kind of took away the novelty of that phenomenon.

time machine question solved but have a new variation on it please

I understand it is possible to share drive for time machine backup and use

What is the best way to share a drive? IS there a way to have some wired

Re: Boot Camp and Voiceover

2012-05-15 Thread Megan Bening
Rahul is right. You really don't need Voiceover in the Bootcamp menu.
All you need to do is:
1. While holding down your options key, power on your Mac. Continuue
holding down your options key for about 8 seconds after you hear the
chime (this is probably a bit long, but I like to do it just to be
sure).
3. You have three options here. From left to right: Mac partician,
Windows partician, recovery partician. By default, you're arrow is on
the Mac partician. Press the right arrow, then Enter. Now wait for
Windows to boot up, and you're all set.
I'm sorry if I made this sound a lot more complicated than it really
is. It's really very easy, once you get the hang of it.

version I go to trash and find it there. Then I can delete the app from phone
and put back the older version and reinstall it.

Hope this makes sense.

Best,

Ioana

Re: rss detection?

2012-05-15 Thread Thierry Renoux
Hello,

In order to see rss feeds on a page, you need to go to the address bar with cmd
l and interact with it, go pass the address and you will find several buttons
such as the "show reader" button. If rss feeds are available you will find a
"show rss" option.

You can hook up the external HD to an Apple Extreme Base Station or Time

The accessibility of Zello?

2012-05-15 Thread Mike Busboom
Hello to all of you,

Has anyone ever used a communications App called Zello and if so, is the iPhone
version accessible? When I went to zello.com, I noticed that several elements
on the page couldn't be read with Safari, and this caused me to wonder about
whether or not it would even be worth my while to download Zello for the iPhone.

My best to everyone,

Mike

Hi,

Yes, Zello is very heavily used in the blind community of VoiceOver users.

I think they have made a few VoiceOver tweaks, and are working with
Serotek to make the Windows application more accessible.

VoiceOver not always reading greeting correctly.

2012-05-15 Thread Veronica Elsea

Hi everyone!
I just started noticing this little annoyance in the last couple of
weeks. In the VoiceOver utility, I have chosen my own text for the
greeting after log in. My computer says Hello Veronica. I am here for
you! Okay, I like a bit of personality in my machines! Well,
for some reason, lately, more often than not, it just says VoiceOver
on. Until the last week and a half or so, it always spoke my little
creation, but now, most of the time it does not. Every once in
awhile, it will read it properly. I don't see anything that I could
have accidentally changed in the general tab of the VO utility, so
I'm curious as to what may have changed. Any ideas?

Thanks.

 Hi.

The reason for that is because your language rotor is set to "standard"
instead the language you're using. This tells Voiceover to use the
standard language which will change if websites are coded in different

Lenses for the iPod Touch

2012-05-15 Thread Nancy M

When the iPod V4 (Touch) was released, the contrast resolution of the video
system was good enough that it could be used for UPC and EAN bar code
scanning with Digit-Eyes. Sadly, with the release of the later versions
of iOS 4, this changed and we found that it had it become impossible to
scan any but the very largest codes.

One of our customers observed that it was possible to scan with the iPod
when she used a magnifying glass, which set us to the task of evaluating
iPod lenses and which got some surprising results.
We got a set of three lenses online in a set: a 180-degree fish-eye lens,
a macro lens and a wide-angle lens and we've tested with them extensively.

Our customer was right -- a lens can greatly improve the capture on your
iPod Touch.

modifying keys such as PrintScreen or Scroll Lock

2012-05-15 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
I recently attached an external USB keyboard to my MBP15 running Snow Leopard.
(It's the real cool clicky "buckling spring," keyboard [thanks for the
recommendation, CG]), and it has keys such as PrintScreen and Scroll Lock, and
that third one whose name, for the life of me, escapes me at the moment.
Anyway, they don't have a purpose in OSX, so is there a way I can make them
into shortcut keys? Commander doesn't list them.

Re: language

2012-05-15 Thread Nancy M
Try settings -> general -> international

You will find the settings for language, voice control, keyboards, regional
format, etc.

Note that it is common (and, at least technically, correct) for voicing
browsers to use the language declaration in the HTML page.

Otherwise, the browser will voice the page with the wrong accents.

Re: language

2012-05-15 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Ok, to recap,

I am interested in finding a setting on mac that would allow vo to change
language according to coding of web page. iPhone does this well if you are on
standard language in rotor. If you select a specific language it ignores coding.
Is there any equivalent setting on mac that anyone can think of? I did not find
anything in vo utility and even less in language tab of system preferences.

Thanks,

Ioana

Weird Lag Issues with Chrome

2012-05-15 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey guys. Does anyone know if Chrome got a new update. Because now when I use
Chromevox, the sounds and the speech lag very much. Like when I navigate
through links or go to a list box, I don't get speech or sounds until after 2-4
seconds. Has anyone else noticed this?

RE: something to share: air print activator

2012-05-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Paul,

Thank you for a most excellent tip. This will greatly benefit those, like
me, who do not have an Apple approved air-printer.

Most Sincerely,

Subject: something to share: air print activator

Hi listers,

I'm glad I can share something back, now that I received so much good help
over time from this list.

You can print from your iphone. I think you will have seen this already. You
sometimes find an action button, for example while viewing a document from
within mail etc, and then you have the print button. However, this does not
work with normal printers, except with eleven or so dedicated models,
because of an Apple restriction.

Just google
it. If you happen to find airprint hactivator, so with an h at the start,
then that is the older version and there is a newer one out there, without
the h, called airprint activator, with an ay, as in alpha, at the start.
This little utility is free, and it does not want to alter system files in
any way, so installing it won't ask your admin password on the mac. It only
adds one or 2 lines to some config file, I forgot where that is, but it is
documented if you're curious.

Once you find airprint activator on google, download it. You will then have
a dmg. You don't need to copy stuff out of there. Just open the dmg, set it
to list mode if yu want, and then run the airprint activator installer app.
Then close your disk image, and eject it from your desktop.

If you have not already done so, share your
printer. It will then appear in a grayed out table inside the preference
pane for airprint activator, so you know which printer is being advertised
on your local lan wifi. The table of advertised printers is gray because the
utility itself decides if you have your printer shared correctly. If so, it
appears in the table. If not, then sharing is the problem. So you cannot add
or delete printers from the airprin utility yourself.

Now to print from your phone, leave your mac running and have your printer
turned on. From the phone, find a print button for some document. Hit it,
and a new little dialog comes up, where the first button lets you choose to
which printer to print. Double tap it and choose your, mac connected shared
printer on the phone. You will return to the print dialog in the phone,
where ok will send the document over wifi to your shared mac printer.

Not a revolution, but handy to know and have. I donated immediately after I
found the program to work so well. In our household, it is a much
appreciated little tool.

Hth,
Paul.

Import a group of mp3 files into ITunes and treat them as an album

Re: Import a group of mp3 files into ITunes and treat them as an album

2012-05-15 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
First, put them in a folder with a distinctive name. Then, give all the
lectures a sequential that is distinctive, such as "plant lecture 01," "plant
lecture 02 ..." through "plant lecture 10," or whatever.

Assuming you have Itunes set to import into its library selected songs you open
in the finder, navigate to the lectures folder, use Command A to select them
all, then Command O to open them. This should import them all into the Itunes
music library.

Then, open Itunes. Use Command Option F to get to the search box, and type in
"plant lecture." Press Tab (NOT return). You should land in the music table,
and cursoring up or down will show you all songs in your Itunes library with
the words "plant lecture," in them.

Assuming you've got them all in the music table, use Command A to select them
all again, then press command I to open the Information dialog. Select the
"information," tab from the group of four. Then, simply tab through and fill
out the fields; artist, album, whatever.

This should do it. HTH. HITS

Re: Import a group of mp3 files into ITunes and treat them as an album

2012-05-15 Thread Jane
You can also Add to iTunes from within iTunes, and then go down to the Recently
Added playlist. Jump down to the bottom and you'll find the most recently
added stuff. Select the ones you want to change, and do those steps with
command-i. Or you can create a new playlist, and then work with that playlist.
That's what I did when I ended up with 198 files I needed to put together into
a single album and in just the right order.

Re: VoiceOver not always reading greeting correctly.

2012-05-15 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Veronica.
Well, I guess it's broken; no biggy but now I can't get the greeting to go back
to the default. I decided to do what you did. I typed in a new greeting and
checked the box for having the greeting spoken. It keeps unchecking itself when
I go back in and look. Now if I turn VoiceOver off and turn it back on, I get
the tutorial. I should have left well alone. That's what I get for playing
around here.

a lot. I added 198 files, and the list was well over 1,000. Later, it had
shrunk back down to 764.

Re: Import a group of mp3 files into ITunes and treat them as an album

2012-05-15 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I would open iTunes and arrow down to your recently added playlist. Then press
command O and add that folder to iTunes. These will then show up in the
recently added playlist. select the files with shift and the up/down arrow
then press command I to bring up the get info dialog. In here, select the info
tab. Now fill in the album field with the title you want and press return.
Now, you can simply type in that album title in the search field in iTunes and
those tracks will show up.in

Hi,

Yup.

I made one little change. I sorted my recently added playlist to have the most
recently added be at the top and not the bottom of the list. This makes
getting to the tracks even easier.

Please Help Me With Getting An App Accessible

2012-05-15 Thread BBS
Hey guys. I found a cool app in the App store called Menuweather. It
does what Imap weather radio does on the Iphone, and that's announce
severe weather alerts, current conditions, and so on. There is one
problem. The app isn't accessible at all. Download the app and see what
I mean. Then review the app like I have and request that it gets the
Voiceover treatment. It really disgusts me that developers don't care
to realize that there are blind users like us that can use these apps
too. BTW, it uses Growl to announce these things.

Baffling Music situation

2012-05-15 Thread Traci
Hey all,

I have this weird song issue. I have a song bought from Amazon MP3, and at
some point I must have deleted it off my Mac. The weird part is it is still on
my iPod and iPhone. iTunes tells me that it can't find the song and it
couldn't be transferred, but when I go to either device, the song is there to
play.

I've tried to transfer it back to the Mac, but this doesn't seem possible.

So then I thought, maybe I can find it via my time machine back up. I'm
finding this challenging and the experience sends my MBA's fan super charged.
:)

Any guidance and explanation is welcome. Why is the song staying on my
devices? I figured the Mac would delete it off. Any tips on speeding up
searching via my Time Machine back up?

Thanks,
Traci

Re: Import a group of mp3 files into ITunes and treat them as an album

2012-05-15 Thread Esther
Hi Paul, Ricardo, Jane, Mark, and Others,
Just a few quick comments to add to these instructions. For Jane's question,
the "Recently Added" smart playlist by default matches two rules:
1) Date added in the last 2 weeks
2) Kind is not podcast

In addition, as Ricardo noted, once you navigate to the "Recently Added" smart
playlist and use the context menu to "edit smart playlist" you can check the
box to limit the number of items in the smart playlist and fill in a number.

The items appear in the order they were added. Jane's idea of creating a
regular playlist of these items is also a good one. You can either do this as
Ricardo suggested, by checking the box and specifying number of items in the
smart playlist, then move to songs table for the playlist (e.g., with VO-J)
doing a Command-A to select all, then do a Command-Shift-N to create a new
playlist from your selection and assign a name to the playlist. Now you can
work with these items separately within their own playlist and reorder them, if
necessary, without disturbing the "Recently Added" smart playlist when you make
editing changes.

I'll just add that for almost anything you want to do in iTunes, there's likely
to be an AppleScript at Doug Adams' "AppleScripts for iTunes" web site. So if
you want to turn your playlist into an "Album" with the tracks numbered in the
order they appear in your playlist, there's an "Albumize Selection" AppleScript:
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=albumizeselection
Bring up Links in your web rotor and type in "download" to locate the "Click to
download this script" link. You can also find the PDF description link just
beside it (either as the next entry in the Links chooser menu, or if you
navigated to the "Click to download this script" link, just flick, right arrow
(in QuickNav mode), or VO-Right arrow to it.)

This AppleScript re-numbers the tracks in the album into playlist order, and
optionally enters a new Album name for each track. The zip file downloads with
instructions about how to use the AppleScript. (Place it in your account's
Library/Scripts folder. Use Command-Shift-H in Finder to go to your home
folder, then use Command-Shift-G to "Go to folder" and type into the text
field, "Library", without quotation marks, and press return. Then create a
"Scripts" folder (without quotation marks) from the file menu or with
Command-Shift-N if this is the first time you are using AppleScripts. Navigate
to the Scripts folder, and copy the AppleScript here. This will show up as an
option in a new Scripts menu on your iTunes menu bar. Select your playlist,
and choose this option from the Scripts menu on the iTunes menu bar to run the
AppleScript.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
