Re: ColorVisor, color identifier for iPhone

Hi Rafael,

thanks for your suggestion. However, OCR is some quite complex staff, which I
am not experienced in.
Anyway, there are some OCR apps on the App Store (e.g. PERFECT OCR), although I
do not know about their accessibility.

Greetings

a learning curve but I've had great success with it and I have no sight at all.

undimmed item

2012-05-02 Thread Pam Mathers
Hi. I have a question. How do you undim an item. Somehow or other, whenever
I go to safari, it will let me type in the webb address, but when I press
enter, it will not allow me to enterin to anything. When I press the foreward
button and back button it says that both items are dimmed. I think that is why
I can't get in to any webb pages on safari, no matter which one I go to. Does
anyone know how to fix the problem. Thanks.

2012-05-02 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello.

I am cross posting just in case I miss some people who have braille displays.

I was completing a survey which Mike sent using my I phone 4S using my braille

it would not happen until I tapped my I Phone screen.

Would all braille users do the same and tell me if they have this problem
please?

Dear All,

It is with pleasure that I would like to announce that following a good few
months of work, the first steps towards my latest project have been now
finalised.

Today, The Open Eyes Foundation takes its first steps onto the International
stage, it is our aim that this organisation, which is the first of its kind,
will revolutionise our communities lives for the better.

It is important to remember that the Foundation is still very much in its
infancy, but, you can gleam much about our intentions and objectives by reading
the few pages of text that we have already published.

Very shortly we shall begin excepting memberships from individuals from around
the world, we are hoping to be truly representative of all of our members, to
act as one in bringing about change for all.

We will be looking for certain members to take on core roles within our
Organisation, and as such, during the sign up process you will be invited to
outline any attributes which may prove of benefit to the Foundation.

Membership is not yet possible, although we hope to be able to start accepting
members within the next few weeks.

In the mean time, you are very welcome to follow us on Twitter;

Twitter ID: @TheOEF

or, simply book mark our official site and check back every week or so to see
when this process begins.

This is an exciting time within our community, and it is my desire to see us,
people from within our community, begin to take the initiative and shape our
future into something we all can be proud of.

Kind regards.

Advice on switching from PC

2012-05-02 Thread Will_C
Hi all! New to the group, but have been lurking and reading for a
while and wanted some input on some of my specific questions.

A little about me: I still have a fair bit of usable vision left,
though my eyes get tired quickly and thus I use a combination of
Zoomtext (with the doc reader) as well as Jaws for longer texts as I
find constantly scrolling back and forth with the magnification very
tiring and disorienting as I have to bump up magnification more and
more. I also used OCR and readers (K1000 traditionally) for school
reading. I’m going to law school in the fall, and so will obviously
be doing a TON of reading and writing, for which I rely entirely upon
my computers.

In the past, I’ve run into issues during research when neither ZT or
JFW could easily interface with the various databases, and I’ll be
working with these even more come September. I’ve hummed and hahhed
about making a switch to Mac after hearing almost nothing negative
about them, and I’ve read and reread discussions on this and other
sites about comparisons between ZT vs Zoom and JFW/NVDA/etc vs
VoiceOver. I’m aware that all these products have their pro’s and
con’s, and while I would love further input or feedback on these
tools, my specific concerns are outlined below.

1. Can anyone provide specific insight on how well Zoom interacts
with advanced word processors and office suites, specifically iWork or
Office for Mac? I’ve heard mixed reviews regarding tracking, font
smoothing, but will have to write long papers and put together
presentations that need to be compatible with other students’ systems
for group assignments.

2. Could anyone offer insights on how VO and/or Zoom might be able to
handle online databases with a variety of html, scanned and .pdf based
documents, hidden frames, and other database programming that I’m just
not familiar with? JFW and ZT often can’t find any text to lock onto
in my previous experience with these databases.

3. What are the best OCR options for the Mac?

Other general comments or recommendations about making or not making a
switch to the Mac for someone who will be doing extensive document-
based research and writing would also be more than welcome.

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback!

Cheers,
Will

accessing Facebook info from command line

2012-05-02 Thread -

Someone wondered:

"I want to build a text-only Facebook client that can be used either
through an HTML interface or a command line interface that can be used
from the terminal. I wish to know if it is possible to access a user's
notifications, messages, request, etc and do small things like post
status updates using c, python, bash scripts, or html. It would be
great if you could point me to an appropriate resource to get started."

Why not use lynx the text based unix/linx browser.

Re: Solved getting icons to read when changing mailboxes.

2012-05-02 Thread Steve Holmes
The interaction thing is probably the most confusing but yet powerful
part of VoiceOver. What I do with my setup in Mail is to interact
with the list of mail boxes which can actually be navigated as a tree
view with expanded and collapsed nodes. Anyway, once I choose the
mail box I want to work with, I just hit tab without uninteracting;
this puts me on the table of messages for that mail box. I then
interact with the table of messages. Now I can move up and down the
list with or without VO keys pressed. the advantage to not using VO
keys while pressing the arrow keys is I can then use the left and
right arrow keys to collaps and expand nodes respectively. I should
have noted while talking about the mail box list that if I use the VO
enhanced arrow keys so I then hear the index levels of the boxes
because the ones at "level 0" cannot be accessed directly. An example
of this would be Inbox; in my case, I have two accounts so I have
Inbox and under that I have my two gmail controled accounts.

I am using the modern view with the message preview pane disabled

Re: web navigation?

2012-05-02 Thread Steve Holmes
I have another question for this subject; I thought I had read that
the modes (DOM or Groups) could be selected for each site you go to
and VO would remember that preference when you go back to a given
site. Did I read this wrong? I do not observe that aspect to be
working on my setup.

The difference I see between DOM and Groups mode is quicker navigation
on those sites where several links are grouped into a single object.
This is especially nice with those navigation links so you don't have
to VO-Right for every single link. But I have also run into
situations where groups are nested within groups which are also nested
in yet another group so I end up having to interact maybe 3 levels
down before I can get to focus on the desired link. So it goes both
ways and I'm glad we have the choice.

As was answered, use the rotor to change to different navigation
levels like Character, Worde, Line, Form field, Heading, and several
others.

Hello,

Not quite sure from your descriptions, but you might just need to expand a
"tree" item. If scanning your list of mailboxes, you hear collapsed then
hitting VO-backslash or an unmodified right-arrow will expand the item so you
can see the enclosed folders.

Re: Question about itunes store

2012-05-02 Thread Steve Holmes
I understand all itunes issues have to be resolved online / email.
When you call Apple support, they will most likely give you the URL or
email address to follow through with. It's stuff like this I wish I
could deal with in person on the phone; generally lots quicker that
way. You might also try obtaining these tracks from an IOS device if
you have one and sync over the cloud. Just a thought to try but if
refunds and stuff like that are involved then you would have to
contact Apple anyway.

Re: Captia solving on the mac.

2012-05-02 Thread Earle
Webvisum can definitely be used on the Mac. It isn't the smoothest process but
it is doable. Earlier in the week there was a blog post stating that the
nightly builds of Firefox now offer voiceover support. I downloaded the
nightly build and I have used webvisum successfully several times. It isn't
very easy to do, but it can be done. I know of a few other people that have
done this as well. There is a lot of work to be done in firefox still. It
definitely isn't ready to be your main browser of choice, but for solving
captious it is fine.

Webvisum can definitely be used on the Mac. It isn't the smoothest process
but it is doable. Earlier in the week there was a blog post stating that
the nightly builds of Firefox now offer voiceover support.

Hmmm, that's not good at all. And, even if Firefox does become accessible on
OS X, Webvism would still need to be made for the OS X platform.

RE: Question about itunes store

2012-05-02 Thread Missy Hoppe
Thanks. Unfortunately, I don't own an IOS device, just my macbook, and I don't
think that having an IToy would solv these
particular problems anyway. I called apple, and she helped me fill out forms
for Itunes store. I think that in future, I'll
ask for the email address I need to contact if I ever have these kinds of
problems again. Still haven't heard back from
Itunes, but it's only been a couple of hours, so I won't worry yet. In the mean
time, I really need to quit buying music
anyway, so this is a good reason to start behaving myself. LOL!

I understand all itunes issues have to be resolved online / email.
When you call Apple support, they will most likely give you the URL or email
address to follow through with. It's stuff like
this I wish I could deal with in person on the phone; generally lots quicker
that way. You might also try obtaining these
tracks from an IOS device if you have one and sync over the cloud. Just a
thought to try but if refunds and stuff like that
are involved then you would have to contact Apple anyway.

Re: Captia solving on the mac.

2012-05-02 Thread Earle
You first have to download the nightly build of firefox. Then go to the
webvisum site and download the webvisum extension. You will have to tab around
to find the install now and restart buttons. I also found I had to hit enter
on those buttons. For some reason vo space wouldn't work.

One of the problems with firefox and vo, is it says busy a lot and it is very
slow. Once you log into erbvisum, vo doesn't report whether the checkbox to
stay logged in is checked or not. Actually, vo doesn't report any checkboxes
correctly in firefox. This is one of the known issues.

To solve a captia you press vo tab to ignore the next keystroke, then press
control-option-6 to tell webvisum to solve the captia. If you forget to press
the ignore next keystroke command, vo tries to move to the web hot spot. Hope
this helps someone. I apologize if the confuses people, but I'm on my way out,

Re: Question about Bootcamp

2012-05-02 Thread Chris Blouch
Just curious whether you could simply use the unix underneath OSX to do
your bidding. I know there are currently 11721 packages ported to osx
under macports.org so maybe you can just run them in the Mac
environment. Just not sure what the key package is in linux that you are
trying to gain access to.

I think so. I use the Refit boot loader (I may have that name wrong)
to boot Mac OS and Windows. I don't see why I couldn't set up another
partition, though. I'm sure google will have plenty of in-depth
articles and tutorials about this. Note that you will need sighted
help to set up some of this, at least I did.

install UBuntu, Vinux, or F123 Linux? preferably either the last two of

I know I could do this in VMWare Fusion, ok, fine, that's fair, but

Webvisum can definitely be used on the Mac. It isn't the smoothest process
but it is doable. Earlier in the week there was a blog post stating that
the nightly builds of Firefox now offer voiceover support.

Hmmm, that's not good at all. And, even if Firefox does become accessible on

Hi Will.
I can't answer all your questions because I am totally blind, so I don't use
any kind of magnification. I understand the cvommand to make text on the Mac
bigger is command plus sign.

I haven't done it, but I guess you know by now that you can put Windows on a
Mac.

I got Abby Fine Reader Express for my Mac. It does a good job of scanning, but
I haven't much time to mess with it much.

I athink you will want Pages for your Mac because you can read and write Word
files with it.

I will say that my iPhone is a better PDF than either my Mac or the Vista
computer in the other room using Jaws. I can and have read PDF files on m y
Mac, but I have found that if I'm just going to read the thing, my iPhone is
better because I can the PDF file into iBooks.

Re: undimmed item

Hi Pam.
Have you tried getting rid of all your windows in Safari with command W or
killing off the history and then quitting Safari and starting over? You might
also try shutting down your computer, and closing all the windows when you shut

Re: help on PDF files

2012-05-02 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there.
Some screen readers like VoiceOver and Jaws don't some PDF files well,
especially any that have columns. Most screen readers are reading from left to
right, and if the author of the Pdf file makes columns, well then they get
mixed up quite often. It sometimes helps to OCR them, maybe. I haven't tried
that particular thing on the Mac because, right now our OCR programs are
designed for the sighted who can unscramble the columns for themselves. In
Windows, Kurzweil 1000 and/or OpenBook can sometimes unscramble the columns,
and sometimes not. That's been my experience, anyway. I used to have this
problem at work with PDF files.

Re: Advice on switching from PC

2012-05-02 Thread Chris Blouch
While I'm sure others can give you more specifics, I should point out
that if you go to the Mac platform you can avail yourself of some safety
nets to enable running Windows apps on the same machine. You don't have
to go 'cold turkey' and if you check the archives for discussions of
VMWare Fusion and BootCamp you'll find out more. Generally VMWare is an
application which has a virtual Intel PC in a window so you can install
Windows, Jaws, Word etc and use it right along side the Mac apps, or set
it full screen to make your mac basically into a temporary Windows box.
The virtualization has some overhead (performance) impact but this
generally works well. BootCamp is more hardcore where you actually
partition your hard drive and make your mac boot into Windows. Turns out
MacBooks are actually some of the faster Windows machines out there when
set up this way. Of course it's a double-edged sword since having the
fallback of your old Windows apps on your mac means you might not put
forth the effort to learn and get comfortable with the new system, but
it's nice to know you don't have to make a mutually exclusive choice.

1. Can anyone provide specific insight on how well Zoom interacts

Office for Mac? I’ve heard mixed reviews regarding tracking, font
smoothing, but will have to write long papers and put together

Other general comments or recommendations about making or not making a

based research and writing would also be more than welcome.

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback!

I agree. Over all, using a real phone is much, much easier. I guess that's why
I have skype, but don't use it regularly. The
only thing I can figure is that maybe using skype as a replacement for a
regular phone is cheaper, especially for long
distance. I honestly don't know, but am tempted to experement with it a bit at
some point.
Also, I just saw the comment about the skype has new windo thing, and have to
agree. That is very frustrating, especially if
there's no easy way to see said new window. I do love, however, that I am able
to set up growl notifications for nearly all
skype events; that's a huge plus.

Yes, it just goes to the website anyway, which is pretty accessible. You have
to sign in with the app, but even when you do, it lives in the status menu by
the clock, and doesn't seem to announce itself easily. It doesn't seem to have
an interface for accessing files, which is still handled by the site.

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-05-02 Thread Doug Lee
Economy: Skype is often cheaper than a phone.

Flexibility: You can change how you listen to and/or talk into a call
more easily with a computer program than with a phone, e.g., switching
between headphones, a wireless headset, a stereo system, etc.

Unification: If you already use Skype to talk to people, it can be
nice to use the same interface to handle phone calls. You can also
conference Skype calls and telephone connections together.

Tracking: When I use Skype for business calls, it's nice that I can
see call length accessibly without special telephone hardware or
software.

avoid some of the hassles of the Windows environment (viruses and security

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-05-02 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey guys, gotta get my 2 cents in on this topic. I don't really care about
where I land when Skype starts. My concern is conferences. When I posted a
thread a few months ago about making a conference, I got an answer that I had
to do all this turning cursor tracking off and routing the VO cursor and some
other crap that I can't remember. Bottom line is, that is too time consuming
and complicated. There's this program in Windows called GW Connect that allows
you to make a conference just by pressing enter or whatever key you have to
press for that. It would be nice if Skype for the Mac were that easy to make
conference calls. BTW, the reason why I don't care where I land in Skype is
because I downloaded a plugin for Adium that allows me to see my Skype contacts
via Adium. So for those of you that are complaining about not seeing your
contact list when you start Skype, perhaps you can try downloading that plugin.
The only catch is you have to have Skype open to use it. You don't have to have
the window open, the program just have to be running.

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-05-02 Thread Steve Holmes
Yes, the economic benefits of using skype or other SIP based phone
services make it worth while.  I also like the idea of flexibility;
especially now that the iPod app for skype is quite accessible now, I
can use skype on my iPod over WIFI now. Where I live right now, all I
have phone wise is a cheapie cel phone which is accessible in its own
right but I don't wanna burn through minutes unnecessarially when I
could use a flat rate over skype or SIP. Plus the audio quality is
better over a VOIP deal than a cell phone.

Hello Steve,

To sort a column, just interact sufficiently to be able to place the VO cursor
on your chosen column and use the VO sort command (VO-vertical line) On my
British keyboard, this is shift on the rightmost key on the home row, the key
in the angle of the Return key. The first time you issue this command it will
sort up the way, and the second time, it sorts down the way.

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-05-02 Thread Earle
It is very easy to stop Skype from saying Skype has new window. Just go into
preferences, then go to notifications and disable all visual alerts. You can
also have Skype tell you when contacts are available by choosing the contacts
available event under notifications. Then just check the box that says speak
text.

Hi there! Thank you so much for starting this topic thread. Hopefully,

When I first got my mac and installed Skype; I believe this was version
5.1 or so, the program always started in the contacts
list. Ever sinve 5.3 or so, when I run the program, it starts me on
something that Voiceover tells me is called Skype Home.
It basicly looks like a facebook clone. Granted, it's not prohibatively
difficult to navigate to a table, interract and find
my contacts list and stop interracting, but I personally feel that this is
something I shouldn't have to do, and it's just
aggravating enough that I avoid using skype as often as possible, and only
run it periodically to check for updates in hopes
that this issue will some day be fixed. I've checked preferences time and
again, and there simply isn't a way to configure
 how the program starts.
To make this even more frustrating, when I ask people about id, they claim
that they don't have this problem. I'd be more
than happy to disconnect skype from facebook if it would fix the problem,
but would rather not if I don't have to. I don't
really understand the point of the favorites thing either, and miss the
simplicity of the first mac version of skype I ever
used. Sorry for the aimless rambling, but I hope it makes sense to
 someone.

 Hi Kevin.

I have been using Skype on the Mac for a long time and when Google had the
program, it worked beautifully with the Mac.
However since Microsoft have bought it, it has not been very good on the
 Mac.

The dial pad is inaccessible. Is there any way of getting Skype for Mac
 fixed?

If there are other issues, feel free any one to say if Kevin is going to
 get this sorted.

 Kawal.

Thanks Anne,

I had no idea VO had its own sourt command. I thought I might have to
figure a way to find the actua column header and click with trackpad
or something. this should be easy enough. Look forward to trying it
out when I get home and play with itunes some more. I'm actually
beginning to dig itunes a bit. that book, "Take Control of iTunes" is
a wonderful resource. I've learned quite a bit on how to pair down
the user interface to be managable and accessible and pleasant to use.

Safari Reader is a normal part of Safari. You press Cmd-Shift-r, wait a second

Oh I know. I've been in there from time to time and mainly used it to
look up something specific. I would have never expected VO to provide
a list sort function. Probably find some other goodies in there when
I go back. I usually go in there for web quick navigation commands
since they vary slightly from those used in Orca or Window-Eyes. I'm
glad that's there for easy reference because there's a lot there to
flat out memorize without actually using all of them.

Thanks again for the tip though.

Just curious whether you could simply use the unix underneath OSX to do

Just not sure what the key package is in linux that you are trying to gain

I think so. I use the Refit boot loader (I may have that name wrong)
to boot Mac OS and Windows. I don't see why I couldn't set up another

Re: accessing Facebook info from command line

2012-05-02 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
This is the exact same thing I po8nted out. The only thing is, even after
granting permissions to all the things by typing

fbcmd addperms

It still wouldn't work when I then did

fbcmd status "Testing."

Frankly, I didn't find this utility was all that great, but that's just me.
Well, and plus, I was doing it under my Linux dedicated server box, not
through the mac.

I don't even know if this thing using mac ports could be ported to the mac.
Interesting thing to ponder though.

Why not use lynx the text based unix/linx browser.

trying to find facetime...

2012-05-02 Thread Eric Oyen
hello everyone.

I am having trouble trying to find/install facetime for the iPhone 3GS. the app
store has listings that contain facetime, but not the actual app. I would also
like to find this app for my OS X Snow Leopard system. anyone have a clue
exactly where this app is?

It's already there, but not an app. Open the phone app, find your desired

Re: No longer able to copy

2012-05-02 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Neither do I. Perhaps we can help if maybe you describe what you did before
and what you're doing now?

1. Download the book.

2. Go to the downloads folder off your home folder.

3. Find the book.

4. When focused on the book, press command+c to copy.

5. Now, navigate to the new location you want to move the book to and use
command+v to paste or shift+command+v to move.

Of course, it goes without saying that you should make sure you are moving the
unzipped version of the book.

As far as FaceTime on a 3GS iPhone goes look in the app store for an app called

Re: trying to find facetime...

2012-05-02 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

There is no FaceTime on the 3GS. Its only on the iPhone 4 and higher, iPad 2
and higher, or the 4th gen iPod touch. Keep in mind, the 3GS doesn't have a
front facing camera so, having video chat would be a little ridiculous. :)

Re: Amazon Cloud Drive

2012-05-02 Thread Kliphton
What exactly are you looking for in accessibility? I've used the app with much
success. The main thing I like about the app, is you can choose where to
download your music, either directly to your itunes library, or a folder of
your choice. I mean why would you want to access them from the app, if you
could have them play and saved directly from your mac. I hear they have a app
for the iPhone in the works. Android already has one. And the other thing is,
if you have files in the mp3 format, you can store them in your amazon cloud,
and it doesn't count against your free storage. If you want a service to back
up your music, why not use itunes match, or google drive seems to be accessible
enough. Me personally, I like sky drive, because I get 25 GB of free storage,
and it has a ios, and mac app even though it is a microsoft product. And both
vo accessible. JMO

Re: Advice on switching from PC

2012-05-02 Thread Kliphton
I made the switch to the mac almost a year ago. And don't regret it one bit!
One tip I will give you is the same one someone gave me and it helped me the
most. It's going to sound simple, but is hard to do and in the long run is the
1 thing that will help you the most. Forget everything you know about windows
when dealing with the mac. Pretend you are knew to a whole new os, as mac and
PC's as well as jaws and voice over are as different as night and day. I went
cold turkey with the mac, sold all my windows pc's, and didn't by a copy for vm
fusion on per pose. Once I learned the mac, and how to survive a little with
voice over. I picked up a copy of vm fusion, and windows home premium. I
still have a few things that windows can do that mac hasn't jumped on the band

I wonder why Apple chose to use that phrase instead of just the word "link",

Well as far as I can tell! there is no way to stop it!

I'm not sure if it can be tamed in the custom verbosity settings in VO
utility!

But it would be nice to have the option to turn it on or off!

Maybe a suggestion to them nice people at Accessibility!

Just about to give up!

2012-05-02 Thread Veronica Elsea
Okay, for the past week I've been writing about mail issues from out
of town. I'm still puzzled about the mailboxes and messages tables
because they don't behave like some of you describe. But now that I
came home, the good old Mail problem reappeared again. I can once
again receive mail, but not send. I know this is a mail bug because
I've now visited two different genious bars and they said they know
of many people who have changed their email from whatever it was to a
G mail account so it won't keep losing track of itself. I'm tired of
recreating accounts and struggling to read subject lines for mail.
I'm about ready to put this thing away until an update comes out. I
so want it to work but I'm really frustrated. I don't think the
losing track of my account server is related to VoiceOver at all, but
the other stuff is, for sure.
I feel so stupid when I read this list and see how much some of you
are doing, yet I can't seem to get the basics out of my way so I can
enjoy the more complex stuff. Okay, I did get Drop box to work. I
found out that the Braille Sense OnHand is supposed to work with Macs
once Mountain Lion comes out. I don't know. Is it not my time? I just
wanted to write and see if there's anyone out there who understands
where I'm at right now. I learned Dos. I'm quite good at Windows. I
didn't have any trouble learning the iPhone. So why is Lion driving
me absolutely insane? Thanks so much.

Re: help on PDF files

2012-05-02 Thread Tim Kilburn
You'll also notice that sometimes the pdf doesn't read at all. This is usually
due to the pdf being a graphic. It could be a simple graphical diagram which
is not going to read by any screenreader or it could be a scanned image of a
textual item. In the latter, even though it appears textual to a sighted
reader, it is still graphic to the computer and thus a graphic image to the
screenreader. Therefore, in order to read it at all, you'd need to use an OCR
app such as ABBYY Fine Reader to translate it into readable format.

Later...

Hey don't give up. I know how you feel. I am very new at the Imac and when I
