Re: Intel Xeon W3530 quad-core processor and internal storage

2012-04-18 Thread Cody Hurst
No, the heatsink and processor will fit together just as they would otherwise.
The six core Mac Pro comes with a W3680 Xeon chip. So, this is nothing new, and
it will fit right from the factory. Nevertheless though, I am used to working
on, and building computers.

Re: Intel Xeon W3530 quad-core processor and internal storage

2012-04-18 Thread Cody Hurst
Processor upgrades are fairly simple. You just have to do reading beforehand.
In this case, all parts will fit together properly with no extra modification
needed. Just today, I installed and SSD hard drive and added 16 gigs of ram my
computer. So I'm used to all of this.

Comstock in the Mac Pro six core. So like I said, nothing new here and no

Re: Intel Xeon W3530 quad-core processor and internal storage

2012-04-18 Thread Lewis Alexander
depending on the CPU installation, the same heat sink and fan can be used, that
is depending on how far the processor upgrade goes. it's an easy job to do as
long as you're careful. I've done this on various macs in my time including
major overhauls, turning a G3 blue and white into a monster system, etc. as
long as you know the firmware limitations and hardware reliances, you're fine.
the key thing is confidence in your ability to do the job and a knowledge of
test and diagnostics.

Re: facebook question, was Re: selecting files using VO.

2012-04-18 Thread Krister Ekstrom
There is an app called Menutab pro for Facebook. It's available from the Mac
App store. It lives in the status menu of the mac, a part that voiceover can't
reach with normal commands, however you can use a shortcut key which by default
is control+f to make the programs window visible. The nice thing with the app
is that it can show either the full or the mobile site so if one don't work for
a particular task, just go to the button that switches mode and press it. The
buttons are fully labeled so there should be no problems finding what the
buttons do.
2 things that are a bit disturbing with the app, and i can't say if this is a
Menutab pro issue or a voiceover one: When in the mobile version, when i read
newsfeeds, every now and again the vo cursor jumps out of the html area and
onto the home button for no apparent reason and when i try to interact with the
html area again vo beeps at me as if there was nothing there, only thing to do
is to use the tab key to get to the html area again. Another thing, and i don't
know if this has to do with the actual site shown in the app is that when i'm
in the mobile version of the facebook site in Menutab, i see the word "search"
but there's no search field and i can't click anything to get a search field
visible. Apart from that, Menutab pro works great.

Can VO be made to read Arabic

Hello all, I am working with someone who has been using a Mac visually and now
needs to use VO. As part of his duties he needs to learn Arabic. Is there any
means of VO reading Arabic? Are there any Arabic synthesizers available and
does anything need to be installed on the Mac. The Mac is a recent US model
IMac.

Re: I'm going to scream, what am I doing wrong!

2012-04-18 Thread Tim Kilburn
Using this method, when you first Interact with the "Message Header Text" area,
navigating with VO-right, it should read the word "From", then the sender's
name, then it will move to the next line and read the word "Subject" and if you
continued, it would read the actual subject then move onto the the next line to
read the Date info. Now, if you navigate left with VO-left, the first thing
that it will read is the last thing it said when going right, then it will move
back through each item.

You need to think of Interacting with as a method of drilling into the the body
to get more and more detailed info. This process makes things quicker to
navigate overall but can confuse you if you're not understanding it or familiar
with the concept. For example, in the case of Mail, if you were just
navigating around the Mail window, you can simply hear about the layout of all
the elements within the Mail window. When you Interact with the "Message
Content" area, you'll get two items, the "Sort" menu item and the "Message
Table". You need to Interact with that Table in order to learn about all the
messages that reside within. Then you can navigate through the messages with
arrow keys or with VO-arrow keys. When you get to the message you wish to read
in full, press return or VO-j if you prefer that method. Now, the message will
be open and VO will read it in full. This is the point where you can Interact
with the Header info inorder to dig deeper into its details.

Hopefully this clears up some layout and logistics for you.

Later...

Re: Selecting files using vo.

2012-04-18 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I just tried it in Mail because I wasn't sure but, its the same process.
Interact with the messages table, navigate to the items you want to select,
press VO command space, press VO up or down to the next message you want to
select and repeat as necessary. You can then press VO F6 to see how many items
you have selected.

Re: Intel Xeon W3530 quad-core processor and internal storage

2012-04-18 Thread Chris Blouch
Yup. I'll be curious to know how it goes. My last attempt at upgrading a
CPU was back in the Sonnet Systems and NewerTechnologies days
(pre-Intel). Today my fleet of Macs is a Mini which I can't upgrade, a
MacBook which I can't upgrade and my old G4 tower, which isn't worth
upgrading. So I hadn't really looked into it much. Used Mac Pro towers
are still pretty expensive which I guess is a testament to how well they
hold up over time and maybe because they are so upgradable. Good luck
with the project!

I would also note that a brand new 1TB drive in the box with warranty etc. is

I wonder, can you use Items Chooser menu to search for "from?" I wonder if
that might be easier, at this point, than navigating to it, until navigation is
more second nature?

That's a good workdaround, but I think they should fix this as soon as
possible. It is necessary that one can rename a file with Voice Over
during the whole process. Right now I will report this to Apple

Re: Disabling the preview pane in Lion mail

2012-04-18 Thread Steve Holmes
Hi Esther and Buddy,

I want to thank you both for the ideas for using mail in the newer
"modern" view and being able to close up the message body pane. It
works great for me now and the read/unread flags don't get changed by
merely going up and down the message list anymore. I think mail on
the Mac may actually become a pleasure to work with now.

OK mutt, better step aside now. Oh, mutt is that other mail

Checkbook vs Checkbook Pro?

2012-04-18 Thread Steve Holmes
I remember someone recommending Checkbook to do Well, checkbook
management on the Mac. When I looked in the app store this morning, I
saw two Checkbook apps there; Checkbook for $14.95 and Checkbook Pro
for $19.95 or so. Does anyone know the difference between them? I may
just go for the cheaper one but wonder if the Pro version has
something I would miss.

Any ideas?

Re: iMovie questions for Mike

2012-04-18 Thread Michael Malarsie
Hey!
Sorry I took so long to write you back.
I also found where it said it creates an audio track. I have never been
able to find it though.
I will do a little messing around with the music to find out how to
loop a track. I know it is possible. I have done it once by accident ha ha.
To merge multiple clips into one I just import them one at a time then
copy and paste them into the project browser. The problem I have found is that
I can't re order them. as you drop new videos into the browser it just puts
them right in the middle of the group. It gets awful messy.
You could put the videos in a folder in a specific order though and
just import the whole folder. That way they will stay in the order you placed
them in. this is all I have found that works.
Hope this helps!!

Re: Numbers, Can it read column and row titles?

2012-04-18 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Becky,

Yes, VO can announce headers. In VoiceOver Utility, Verbosity, announcements,
check the Speak header when navigating across a table row check box.

When navigating along a row, you'll hear the column number, the contents of the
cell and then the header name. You can get both cell coordinates by pressing
VO-Shift-t.

Cheers,

Anne

It is definitely frustrating but once you find that exact thing you have

I'd try going over to the subject once you've interacted then back to the

the mouse to the name you want with vo-command-f5? Just a thought.

How To Import WebBraille Books Into IBooks

2012-04-18 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

I don't usually cross-post, but this seems like an instance in which it would
be beneficial.

I'm going to share with you all the way I've successfully imported WebBraille
books to read in IBooks. There are other methods of reading these on the
IPhone/IPod, but this method will allow you to keep your place in the book when
you need to pause reading. I used TextEdit on the Mac to open the file and
export it to pdf. Check your text-editor's documentation on exporting to pdf if
you're using another OS or editor.

This method will only work with a braille display, and does *not* work with
speech.

I haven't tested it on other brf files, but you might give it a try.

1. Open a brf WebBraille file in TextEdit. If you don't like the uppercase
dot-7 caps appearing for all of the characters, select all the text, go into
the edit menu, choose "transformations" and change to lower case. At this
point, you can check the document with the braille display to see if it is
readable. Use eight-dot Braille, uncontracted.
2. From the file menu in TextEdit, choose "export to pdf". In the save dialog,
you'll be presented with a filename with a pdf extension. Save the file in a
place that's easy to find.
3. In Itunes add the file you just saved to your library. It will appear in
your Books list.
4. Use whichever sync settings you've specified to sync this book to your
IDevice. I usually do this manually, placing the file in my Ipod/books playlist.
5. Open IBooks and find the file in your IBooks library. Change Braille to
eight-dot, uncontracted. Use dots 3- and 6-chord at the page chooser to switch
pages.

Enjoy.

Re: drag and drop

2012-04-18 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Jenny.
I have just forgotten about drag and drop; I'm using the king of the beasts
also. The reason it doesn't always work is that, if you are totally blind like
me,you can't tell if something went off the screen or not when you get ready to
drop it. If it goes off the screen, it won't drop.

Re: I'm going to scream, what am I doing wrong!

2012-04-18 Thread Jennifer Perdue
I can get to the from field in the headers, it's the menu that won't come up
whether I interact with it or not. When I do interact with the headers field
and get the from field, I VO arrow right and get the hide something or another,
I VO left arrow to go back to the from field which I understand should allow me
to get to the menu field but nothing happens.

When I VO right arrow to the field after the from field it says hide, not the
subject.

Am I that inept?

Re: Checkbook vs Checkbook Pro?

2012-04-18 Thread Jennifer Perdue
I'd like to know the same thing.

Though my bank sends me every deposit and withdrawal that is made in my
checking account, also it sends me daily account balances, but sometimes it
forgets to send the balances, and sometimes transactions don't hit the bank
until a few days later.

I'd love to know about an accessible checkbook program for the Mac as well.

Thanks for asking that question.

 Jennifer,

I believe that you missing one Interaction step.

 • If you VO-right and VO reads "Hide", then go left to the Header area
 again.
 • Interact with that Header area and VO-right past the sender's name to
 the Subject.
 • Then VO-left back to when you hear the sender's name again.
 • At this point, press VO-shift-m to bring up the Contextual menu.

What I believe is happening is that you may be misunderstanding the Header
areas. If VO reads "Message Header Group", then know that you're
Interacting with a "Group", therefore you may need to Interact with an
object once again in order to get to the proper level. In this case, the
second Interaction will take you to the "Message Header Text", and
therefore you'll know that you're within the correct area for the steps
 outlined above.

Hope this helps to explain and to save your computer from hurling through
 the air.

 Later...

Tactile screen protectors for the iPhone

2012-04-18 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hey all,

I recently read about tactile screen protectors that are provided by a company
called Speed Dots.
These screen protectors basically provide raised dots in areas where the most
frequently used options like backspace, okay, cancel, etc are located.
They also provide raised dots for all the letters, which makes typing a lot
faster and easier.

So, has anyone here used any of these tactile screen protectors?
Please do share your experience if you have actually used it.

Regards,
Rahul

Re: I'm going to scream, what am I doing wrong!

2012-04-18 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

If you are getting the "Hide" button then you have not Interacted enough. That
is, the "Hide" button is part of the Header Group but it is not within the
Header text. So, when VO reads "From", try Interacting with that area, then
you should hear more details about the sender, the subject and the date.

Hope this helps to explain and to save your computer from hurling through
 the air.

when you press VO-Down Arrow? You should find a horizontal splitter
and not be able to go down any further.

Woo hoo! This explanation finally did the trick for me. Mail is now behaving as
I want it to. Yippee! Thanks for your patience, all of you. Hopefully one day
down the road, I'll be able to do the same for someone else who is new to the
Mac and VoiceOver.
Thanks again.

Hi all,

Maybe this is old news but I could not find this in official apple

When music is playing pressing command option left or right rewind or forwards
the audio.

Ioana

Please check out my cd on www.ioanagandrabur.com on iTunes and most online

2012-04-18 Thread Veronica Elsea
Thanks Ioana! I was just about to ask this question. Do you know if
holding down command-option-right-arrow will make the music scrub
slowly forward, like an old tape recorder? Or do you just tap it once
and it goes a certain distance, etc. Thanks so much.

Re: Checkbook vs Checkbook Pro?

2012-04-18 Thread Brent Harding
Wow, you got it better than most. My oldest account, I get withdrawal and
debit card alerts, but nothing much as far as deposits go. This new place
I'm battling can only send alerts when a bill goes into process, for
low/high balance thresholds, and deposits over a set threshold. To set it up
requires help because of invisible radio buttons and checkboxes. I wanted
them for ATM fee credits and remote check deposit, but not sure how I would
line the check up in the printer to get their complex endorsement that
includes the account number. I don't know, to tell the truth, why they have
24 hour service, when what you need, they have no way to do.

I'd like to know the same thing.

Though my bank sends me every deposit and withdrawal that is made in my
checking account, also it sends me daily account balances, but sometimes
it forgets to send the balances, and sometimes transactions don't hit the
bank until a few days later.

I'd love to know about an accessible checkbook program for the Mac as
well.

Thanks for asking that question.

re: using the mouse.

2012-04-18 Thread Veronica Elsea
Hi everyone! I can't believe I'm doing this. It drives me crazy when there's
just been a discussion on a list about something and then someone writes in and
asks, what was that again? So, tail between legs, ears back, here I go.
I was so excited about mail finally behaving that I accidentally deleted the
message about using the actual mouse. I'd love to be able to wander around the
track pad and get VoiceOver feedback.
Is it that I go into universal access and change the delay there to zero? I
think there's another step I've forgotten though. So please forgive me and I
promise to pay closer attention from now on.
But if someone could resend me that original post, I'd be most grateful. Thanks
so much.

Re: How To Import WebBraille Books Into IBooks

Thanks Theresa, i appreciate this, this method is a lot easier than I was going
through the steps with so if you don't mind I am going to share this with one
of my patrons here at the library. I work with the braille collection here at
the Library for the Blind and also handle technology and alternative reading
methods and this goes right up there with what I do perfectly. Thanks for the
trick and I'll pass this along if you don't mind. I've been using web braille
on Itunes but I've been doing it the hard way using a braille translator, a
book converter, like Stanza, and all that junk, but this makes it easier.

Re: drag and drop

2012-04-18 Thread Scott Howell
You also always have the option of using command-x to cut an item and
command-option-v to move the file to the current location.
1. locate file
2. command-x to cut
3. move to new location
4. command-option-v to move the file to the new location.

Re: equivalent of perky duck equivalent for mac?

2012-04-18 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Ioana.
I have giving some thought to doing this, but haven't yet had the time to play
with it. If you don't have a braille display with input keys, I guess this
won't work.

I suspect it would work if you wanted a braille file 2`o turn on computer
braille and just tyse in grade 2 in TextEdit, and then rename the file to have
a brf extension when you got done. I thought about doing this when I saw that
my brf files qat I originally wrote in grade 2 on the PacMate looked perfectly
fine on the braille display. a
If you don't have a braille display with input keys, I haven't yet come acress
an equivalent to Perky Duck. You know that is a stripped down version of
Duxbury.

hi Mike,

the option you want is in the VoiceOver utility, in the navagation
pain, not in universil access.it's in the section of the pain which
also has options for the VO curser. VO should say, mouse kerser. a
popup button presents you with options, where egnores VO kerser is the
default. hope that helps,

Re: Checkbook vs Checkbook Pro?

2012-04-18 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Hi:
I have Checkbook Pro. The Pro version lets you move entries in to smart
folders, create global account summaries, etc. See the below link.

speakers

2012-04-18 Thread Pam Mathers
Hi. Right now I have an audio cable hooked up to the headphone jack of the
computer and the other end hooked in to the exilary output in my stereo so that
the sound comes through the stereo speaker. The stereo only has two speakers
so if I wanted more of a surround sound, would I beable to buy two extra
speakers and hook them in to the back of the computer and hear those at the
same time I'm hearing the stereo ones. Thanks.

Plex

2012-04-18 Thread Tim Hornik
While looking for different options to set up my Mini as a home Theater, I
came across Plex. Thus far, I managed to set up the home server on the mini
and purchased the iOS app. While I am enjoying the ability to stream my
media to my various devices, a few areas concern me, though.

First involves the fact that the Plex Media Center no longer is accessible.
I thought the Media Center was accessible, at some point based on threads
from other forums from a while back.

Is anyone using either a jailbroken Apple TV (2nd Gen), Roku, or other Plex
friendly device? I read a few discussions from a while back about Roku with
regards to accessibility, but seen that some issues exist between Roku and
the remote feature on the iOS app. I am looking for something that will
allow me to stream media from my mini to other TV's in my house.

I realize that I could solve most of these issues with an Apple TV 3rd Gen,
but would prefer to try figuring out a solution with Plex.

Thank you,
Tim

Re: using the mouse.

2012-04-18 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Veronica,

In VoiceOver Utility, Verbosity category, select the Announcements tab and
check the check box Speak text under mouse after delay. Then set the delay to
zero. When you run one finger over the trackpad, VO will speak what is under
the mouse.

Cheers,

Anne
