Re: Mail Problems, using Lion.

2012-04-14 Thread Scott Howell
Veronica,

Having no idea who your mail provider is or anything along those lines I have a
question or two.
First do you have to use pop? I have not used pop in a very long time so I
cannot comment on whether there is any issues with Apple mail and pop servers.
Is the pop server using standard pop on port 110 or something like APop which
is a secure version of pop. Of course as a side note, pop sends passwords in
the clear and is truly insecure. I forget which port APop sits on.
I'm assuming you have the proper server name such as smtp.example.com, but
assuming all of this have you looked at the Connection DOctor screen to see if
there are any messages and if so did you see any messages that might indicate a
problem with outbound connections?
Sorry I have not been paying close attention to all the threads rolling through
here.

Veronica,

Try to create another user and setup your mail there. If this works then I
would delete and recreate the original user account. I know this seems brute
force and it is, but I don't know enough about plist files to tell you to go
remove the correct one.

Hope this works.

Also, you might create a gmail account and have it pop your email there. Then
use imap on your Mac. This is the way I do it and it works out well for me.

Track pads

2012-04-14 Thread Marc Rocheleau
Hey all,

Okay so my search for Mac info continues...

Basically, this is a simple one. I've heard mentions of track pads
before and, to my understanding at least, it seems like they enable
mouse or touch screen-like navigation? Is this a fair assessment and
if not, what do track pads serve to do? If so, how much can it
substitute for navigation with the keyboard?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Track pads

2012-04-14 Thread Lewis Alexander
trackpad accessibility is basically the emulation of most functions of the
iphone / iPad touch screen interface in terms of functional gestures. needless
to say it's a great system which apple have pioneered with the first versions
of the macbook air and the newer versions of the macbook pro, etc. now it's
common place. other manufacturers like sony, HP and toshiba have taken on this
interface technology to the windows user interface, however from a blind user
aspect, it dos not work with windows based screen readers correctly, if at all.

this is where we mac users have the upper hand.

I LOVE IT!

Mac to PC network -- is it possible?

2012-04-14 Thread Marc Rocheleau
Hi all,

The subject describes my overall question but I'll provide some
details so you have a better idea of what I'm looking at.

Right now I have my computer upstairs in my room. If I got a Mac this
year like I'm planning to, I'll still be living with my parents for
another year and they use our home network to get the internet from my
computer. Their PC is set up in the basement at the opposite end of
the house so they're linked to my internet connection via network
cable and d-link wifi router.

My iPhone, laptop and fiancee's lap top all run the internet off of
wifi thanks to the router as well.

My question is, given all of these factors, can I create a network
with a Mac replacing the main PC hooked up to the internet, which is
what all other devices gain internet access from? Obviously I know my
iPhone and Apple TV will connect but I just want to make sure that A)
Any other non-Apple laptops/products can use the wifi and B) my
parents computer will be able to share the internet connection via
network cable if I'm using a Mac. The wifi signal just doesn't seem to
be strong enough to reach the basement.

One last question, I assume I'd need to buy a new router for the Mac
to create a home network. If so, can someone recommend a router that
works well with Macs?

Thanks in advance! :)

Re: Track pads

2012-04-14 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Marc,

If you buy a Mac laptop, you'll have a built-in trackpad, but if you buy a
desktop Mac, you'll have the option of buying the Magic Trackpad instead of, or
as well as, a mouse. There are no other brands of trackpad that work with a mac.

As for it's limitations, there are a number of navigation commands already
mapped to gestures on the trackpad, but you can add the VO commands you use
most frequently and map them to unused gestures.

It isn't exactly like the iPhone because Mac OS X isn't IOS 5. So, on the Mac,
you have gestures for interacting and stopping the interaction, for instance.

None of this will make sense to you until you have a Mac and learn about the OS.

Using the trackpad with VoiceOver means turning on the trackpad commander which
renders the trackpad inoperable for moving the mouse. However, a simple gesture
turns the trackpad commander off and on, so getting sighted help to fix a
problem is still possible.

I can't give you any comparisons with Windows and its various screen readers as
I've never used Windows.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Previous Recipiants Mail Question

2012-04-14 Thread Teresa Cochran
I think of the previous recipients list as a sort of holding tank of addresses
that have been dealt with in mail. You can then take these and put them in your
address book or delete them. I actually like this feature. When I used to use
Outlook Express in windows, I was a little annoyed to find every single address
I'd replied to in my address book. I don't necessarily want every address in
there.

Re: Track pads, broken

Turn Track Pad commander on by holding down the VO keys and doing a two-finger
rotating gesture, called the rotor, on the track pad. So, hold down the VO
keys and rotate two fingers on the track pad like turning a dial. You'll hear
a really cool bleep and Track Pad Commander will come up--assuming VO is turned
on of course.

My track pad is flaking out. It's clicking when I don't want, and switching me
out of windows randomly. When the computer gets hot, apparently this is worse.
My question, since I'm not really much of a gesture person myself (I'm more
retro old schoool with keyboard shortcuts and so on), how do I turn the track
pad off or disable it, so it doesn't do random cursor weirdness?
Thanks.

That GOD aweful screen!

2012-04-14 Thread Jennifer Perdue
Hi,

I know a couple of people have called to help last week but with some health
problems and the emotional stress of having to retire, and then give up my
guide dog, I just haven't had the strength to deal with a phone conversation.

Please tell me what to do with that horrid screen. It happens every other time
I turn my computer on, and to get it to go away I have to manually turn my
computer off and then turn it back on to get it to go to the desktop.

I know there is a way to get past that screen, someone told me via email a long
time ago, but I can't remember it now.

HELP!

Absolutely. What topic would you like? You can also search Malarsie and
accessibility and Mac and it should bring some up. My series is called How

any real editing done but the other ones have a jingle and titles and stuff.
This link is to a video about basic Voice Over controls on Mac.

Re: Mac to PC network -- is it possible?

2012-04-14 Thread Steve Holmes
Well, you are going to be using a router no matter what so none of your own
computers need to be involved with sharing any internet connections.
I personally recommend Linksys for home routers; most have a decent web
interface for configuration and they have four hardware network ports plus you
can get WIFI on them.
So let the router do all the work and your computers and those of your parents
can just co-exist on this single network. Oh, your mac will work just fine on
a setup like this. My mac mini and linux laptop get on just fine with my
Linksys router here.

A lot of people like the Airport Extreme for use with their Macs but they are
at least twice as expensive but they might support other Apple-centric
features; not sure.

Hi,

hold down the control and option keys then place 2 fingers on the trackpad and
turn them clockwise as if you were turning a dial. Of course, Voiceover needs
to be on first for this to have any effect.

webpages question

2012-04-14 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
Three web-based questions below, I use Google Chrome and Safari
interchangeably, making you aware of that in case your answers are different
depending on the browser I'm using.
1. Is there a way to stop a webpage reverting to the top of the page when it
refreshes? When on the Tesco Grocery site, when I click add to basket it
refreshes the page and then I have to work my way down to where I was.
2. Conversely, is the trackpad gesture to get to the top of a webpage 3-finger
swipe up? I just can't seem to get it to do it ...
3. Finally, is there a way of getting a page to refresh? I have particular
problems with the Mastercard secure code/verified by Visa page which more often
than not refuses to load properly, to cancel or reload the page might mean
losing where I am or even paying twice and I don't want that. What I'm really
looking for is if there is a command like insert-escape for Jaws which will
make sure everything is brought up on the screen. I think this page in
particular is quite difficult to load and often I have to close it and go
through the whole thing again before I can confirm payment and write in my
code-and this often allerts my pushy bank who then decide it's fraud, when in
fact, it's a rubbish page not doing it's job properly.
Thanks all, advice much appreciated.
Kirsten.

Re: Mac to PC network -- is it possible?

2012-04-14 Thread Scott Howell
I would not consider a Linksys router for any reason. In fact if you were to
invest in an Apple router you will get a device that is by far superior in
security than Linksys routers. Linksys use to make some good stuff, but just
not the case any longer. ALthough if you insist on buying a Linksys, I would go
look at OpenWRT or one of the other firmware replacements for Linksys.

Re: Logic pro tips and questions.

2012-04-14 Thread Lewis Alexander
as it's a discussion on here which will cause a few twinges to some here
including myself, I know how you feel about logic.

unfortunately, there's no work arounds at all for logic. as an example, in the
main arrange window, you cannot get track name or header info, nor any
functions regarding recard arm, solo, etc nor it's control of track cursor,
etc. Seriously, I advise abandoning this lost cause in logic and moving to
ProTools 10. it's the only way and I'm sorry to have to say it. There's nothing
else on the market that's voiceover compatible which focuses in multi track
recording, editing, sound design or production needs for the pro audio user
other than pro tools.

My background here is having worked with logic studio 8 and 9. the only way of
using it was as a tape master from a 48 channel digital desk with MMC control.
This meant that voiceover couldn't respond anyway but for my work at the time,
that was the only way for it. so the desk was the only way of tactile access.
through track arming on the fly, record automation from the desk using logic
as a tape and MMC slave, etc.

Re: Adjusting system and VoiceOver volumes independently in Lion.

2012-04-14 Thread Veronica Elsea

Hi there!
Yes, I know about function F11 and F12. But they lowered the volume
for both VoiceOver and system sounds. In this example, they were
separate. And in my original post, I quoted how the demo went and I
was wondering why I didn't see the same behavior on my machine.

Thanks.

Okay, here was the question I was trying to ask when things really
fell apart.
This evening I found the David Woodbridge tutorial on adjusting the
system volume and VoiceOver volume independently. In his example,
he was playing a relax something in the background. When I did it,
I was playing his mp3 tutorial. I then used the
command-option-command left arrow to find volume. I then held down
the modifier keys and moved down to lower the voiceover volume. I
followed his exercise and then started moving back up. In his
example, when he hit 96 per cent, the next thing was system volume
20 per cent. He could then raise, but not lower the system volume.
In my attempt, after 95 per cent was 100 per cent and that was
that. When I use function F11 to lower the system volume, it
lowered VoiceOver as well.
In trying to look around, I can't find any setting that refers to
separating these two volume levels.
I keep having this experience with his tutorials. He says do this
and that will happen. I do this and just hear bink! According to
the about this mac, I have 10.7.3. Where am I going wrong here?

Thanks.

Re: Mail Problems, using Lion.

2012-04-14 Thread Veronica Elsea

Hi everyone!
First, I know I've entered the correct information because it worked
for two weeks. When I got it to work, I had a friend who owns a
server just like the one where my mail is stored create a fake
account for me. That one worked. After creating that account, my real
account started working.
The reason I use pop mail is that on my main windows computer, I'm
using Eudora, which started out as pop a long time ago. I have all my
folders set up on my computer along with way too many messages in my
inbox.
This MacBook air is to be used when I'm traveling or not at my desk.
What I want to do here is to read mail and leave it on the server. So
if I readjust everything, it could work, but it's just a bit more
than I want to do at the moment because Mail busted something.
And I can't imagine what kind of mess I could create as I delete this
account over and over again.
And I'm also sure about the port settings and such because we
couldn't get it to work at the Apple store either. In searching
online I have found a bunch of references to people having problems
with Mail, it working for awhile, losing it again and so on. It sure
is discouraging though.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably end up doing all sorts of
strange things in the near future. I just can't believe how much time
I've wasted on this. Yikes!

I have this happen occasionally with in email. Somebody on this list posted
this hint, and it is been very helpful to me. Press the power key five times

you may have to get back into where you were. However, it should bring

Re: webpages question

2012-04-14 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Depending on how the web page is set up for refreshes, you are probably out of
luck. You might be able to use a "sweet spot" to have focus go where you want.
A sweet spot is a web spot that is set when you indicate to set the same
location as a webspot twice. I have found that in Lion, if one is not on the
browser when the page stops loading, then the various functions to go to
next/previous heading or link do not work... Turning on and off Voice Over
often will help.

In Chrome I suggest you use the chrome vox functions when possible.

Best wishes,

Hi!
you can get a trial version from abby usa. It works for a couple of weeks and
you can try it out. Then I Believe its $99 for a key.

Re: ABBYY Fine reader

2012-04-14 Thread Esther
Hi Johnny, Jim, and Others,

Here's the link to the page where you can get a trial download of ABBYY
Finereader Express:
http://www.abbyy.com/finereader_for_mac/trial/#
You can also just purchase it from the Mac App Store for $99.99 (but there's no
available trial download when you use that site):
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/abbyy-finereader-express/id412310371?mt=12

The price is standard, although I was surprised to see that they dropped the
Mac App Store price to $49.99 on Black Friday (the Friday after Thanksgiving)
last year. It was either just for that day, or possibly the weekend, and I've
never known them to do that before.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: How do you add someone to your address book?

2012-04-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

When in the AddressBook app, press cmd-n to create a new card or go up to the
File menu and select New Card. By default, your cursor should land in the
first name field, enter the first name of the individual you wish to add.
Press tab to go through the various fields for entering information.

HTH.

Re: How do you add someone to your address book?

2012-04-14 Thread Brett C.
You can also add the sender of an email from Mail to your address book. This is
done by highlighting the email and the key combination of command shift Y.

Re: Apple TV, dvd extras & chapters?

2012-04-14 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Ripit will allow you to choose what you want to rip, but the default is to just
rip the movie. It will drop it into iTunes for you if you want.
If you are ripping a tv series, there is a nice check box where you can ask it
to separate the episodes.
I haven't seen this in any other ripping program thus far.
