Cheree Heppe here:

This said most of what I think regarding the impact of Steve Jobs on the Apple

Thank you for articulating your thoughts so eloquently.

It may be time to write Apple's new head to share some of this directly as a

Re: Questions

2011-10-06 Thread David Eagle
I'm not seeing this with my set up. On my Macbook Pro using Lion it
works fine. I plug it in to the USB port, press a cursor routing
button and it works fine. well at least it works in terms of reading
braille; I have had no joy writing with it. The cursor wheels also
work fine for me. Go into the voiceOver utility, to the braille
category, then in braille displays have a look at the settings.
Perhaps change the primary braille display setting to, use all braille
displays. I haven't got my Mac with me where I am at the moment, so I
can't be more specific.

Let me know how you get on.

 Topic: Selecting in safari
 Matt Dierckens Oct 05 08:06AM -0400 ^

 Hey all.
I have important information on a facebook message and I need to select
everything from it. For some reason however, this isn't seeming possible
and I'm frustrated about it. If anyone could give me a hand with this
 please let me know. Thanks.

 Matt

 Alex Hall Oct 05 08:24AM -0400 ^

The way I've found to do it is:
 1. Interact with the text and move to the start of the desired
 selection.
 2. Hit vo-enter.
 3. Use normal commands to move from the start to the end of the
 selection.
 4. Hit vo-enter again, then cmd-c to copy.

There's probably an easier way, but that is all I could find on Google
when I tried selecting the other day.

Hey Matt.
One thing that you might want to try is this.
First, get VO to where the text is you want to copy
Then, press VO shift C to copy the last phrase to the clipboard.
Finally, go to text edit or where ever and paste
Just keep doing that over and over until you have all that you
want. It's

One thing to keep in mind is that when VO reads text in safari,
it's reading

 Hey Matt.
One thing that you might want to try is this.
First, get VO to where the text is you want to copy
Then, press VO shift C to copy the last phrase to the clipboard.
Finally, go to text edit or where ever and paste
Just keep doing that over and over until you have all that you want. It's
kind of annoying way to do it but...
One thing to keep in mind is that when VO reads text in safari, it's
 reading
 paragraph by paragraph.

Hi everyone.
I'm interested in signing up for sendspace but I have a question.
Have any of you used the sendspace wizard for mac? Was or is it accessible with
VoiceOver?
If not, my search for an accessible dropBox alternative continues.
Thanks to all who answer.

Typing echo

2011-10-06 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

I use VoiceOver on my Mac.
So, the problem is that VoiceOver doesn't read anything as I type.
I can read the entire sentence after I've finished typing, but it
doesn't read anything as I type.
In other words, the typing echo function of VoiceOver is not working.
I changed it to 'characters and words', but it's still not reading anything.
So, what should I do?
Please shed some light on this matter.

Cheers,
Rahul

Re: editing html code

2011-10-06 Thread Chris Blouch
Right, you can flip back and forth between the text editor and the
browser. Save in the text editor, Command-Tab to Safari, Command-R to
reload, check your work, command-tab back to the editor. Rinse and
repeat. Other editors like SubEthaEdit have web preview windows in them
so you just command-~ to it but I don't trust these previews and it's
not that hard to flip between apps.

Pottermore

2011-10-06 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

Has anyone here tried using Pottermore with VoiceOver?
For me, it worked well for the first 4 chapters, but now I'm stuck.
So, do let me know if you've tried using the site with VoiceOver.

Cheers,
Rahul

Re: click to flash verses click to plug

2011-10-06 Thread Chris Blouch
Dunno if I would uninstall it. On pages that auto-play Flash because the
page is a destination for some piece of content it might not matter that
Flash is in-accessible. If you un-install Flash you will not be able to
access such pages.

Hello David,

Access to button controls of flash-based content in browsers is not
accessible with VoiceOver, but you can play content that is flash based
(such as YouTube videos). Note that support for playing Flash content no
longer comes as a default with Mac OS X distributions; you have to
separately download this. The original ClickToFlash implementation was a
Safari Browser plug-in that prevented Flash content from automatically
loading. This included annoying advertisements that would take up memory
resources. You could still load flash content if you added the current web
page to your white list (by pressing the Option key and Clicking with a
mouse or trackpad at the same time), or by navigating to the menu and adding
a site. Alternatively, you could enable Flash content to load and display on
the current page without adding to the white list by pressing
Command-Control-F. The point of this was that you only loaded flash content
when you wanted it, and performance was much snappier since you weren't
using up resources for Flash content you didn't want -- like ads.

This later morphed into a Safari Extension option, and then to plug-ins of
various levels of refinement. With the advent of HTML5, which is how YouTube
movies play on iOS devices -- not using Flash -- the ClickToFlash plug-ins
enabled substitution of accessible, HTML5 versions of Flash content on web
pages that offer this option. (The plug-in can do some other things, too,
but this is what Ray wants in order to gain control of the Sample playing
controls on the Audible site.)

Basically, the current information for both the ClickToPlugin and the
ClickToFlash Safari extensions may be found here:
http://hoyois.github.com/safariextensions/clicktoplugin/

More detailed information about setup depends on your operating system.
Here's a link to one of Justin's older posts about setting up the plugin:

Re: First-Time Mac Owner

2011-10-06 Thread Chris Blouch
Didn't notice any followups to this so I thought I'd try to answer one
or two.

2 - If you just ordered your machine it should ship with Lion which is
OSX 10.7. On OSX there is a persistent menu bar across the top of the
screen which is reached via VO-M. The first menu item is always the
Apple menu and under there is always Software Update. That should
default to running every so often all by itself. Software update will
scan all the Apple related stuff installed on your machine, notify you
of updates and download/install them. No need to go and manually
download/install anything.

3 - Depends on your definition of "similar specs". Generally Apple only
sells high-end hardware so if you were to run windows on it via bootcamp
you'll probably find it to be quite fast compared to other windows
laptops. Some reviews in the past have claimed that Apple's laptops are
actually the fastest hardware for running Windows.

5 - What do you mean by using your iPhone as a modem? If you mean
tethering, I thought that was turned off for AT&T, but maybe it's on for
other carriers or in other countries. If it is turned on then I think
your phone just becomes a wifi hotspot which would allow any wifi device
with the right credentials to use your phone's internet connection.

Hi Guys,
I've ordered a MacBook Pro and it should be here on Monday or Tuesday.
This is my very first time owning an Apple computer of any kind, so I
have virtually no experience with using one. Plenty of Googling, as
well as various podcasts from Blind Cool Tech, Blind Geek Zone and
Vision Australia, are the extent of my knowledge. I have a few things
I'd like cleared up, if possible:
1. What happens when you connect a Microsoft keyboard to a Mac? I know
things like the "Command" and "Option" keys are swapped, that "Clear"
is located above "num pad 7" on an Apple keyboard, and that "Fn" is
directly above "Delete", also on an Apple keyboard. But what happens
when a PC keyboard is connected and you press keys like "num lock",
"scroll lock" or "Insert"? Do they perform the functions that the keys
in the same locations on an Apple keyboard would?
2. As far as I know, my machine will be running Snow Leopard. I'm not
sure how up-to-date it'll be, so I downloaded the 10.6.8 update combo
from Apple's site. Will it just install the updates to the software
that are newer than what's on the machine, or will it want to start
all the way from 10.6.0?
3. I've heard that, when running Windows natively on Apple hardware,
it's much faster than running it on a PC with similar specs. Is this
at all true?
4. On a related note, do the Windows drivers for the Mac hardware come
preinstalled somewhere on "Macintosh HD", or are they on the Snow
Leopard installation DVD? Also, does exploring the DVD in Windows
display different contents to what is shown in Snow Leopard? I've
heard people on podcasts say that, in Windows, they had to right-click
the CD drive and select "Show Windows Files", or something to that effect.
5. Will I be able to use my iPhone as a modem in Snow Leopard? I can
do it in Windows and it works beautifully, but only after I've
installed iTunes. Will it "just work" in Snow Leopard, or does it need
some configuring? If it needs configuring, where do I go and what do I
do to get it to work?
I know that's a lot to take in all at once, but I'd like to be as
prepared as I possibly can. Thanks very much in advance for any feedback.

Gavin

That said, I use Fusion as it is much faster to get in and out of for
the occasional Windows app than having to reboot into Windows. Boggy vs.
Snappy is a bit subjective. It could just be raised expectations from
using OSX. On my real Dell WindowsXP box I'm still surprised how boggy
and slow Windows seems compared to working in OSX.

Re: Micrtosoft Word

2011-10-06 Thread Teresa Cochran
Microsoft is not accessible at all in oS X. So that makes the choice less
difficult. I've found Open Office to be marginally usable, Pages more so, and
TextEdit wonderfully usable fore rtf and earlier Word versions.

the history thing. I still experience alerts not spoken automatically when

Mission Control and Spaces in Lion

Hello all,

I've been playing around with creating and using extra desktops/spaces but
can't see how you can remove an empty one. Obviously they don't do any harm -
you can forget they're there - but I'm sure there must be a way to close them
when no longer needed?

Thanks,

Re: The continuing adventures of David eagle and his Apple Mac computer. this time it's about Sendspace.

2011-10-06 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi there,
2 observations to your method.
Firstly after making an alias you can copy and move to desktop but then if you
press command option v it will move the alias there so you don't have to go
back and delete it.
2. YOu can add files and folders to dock by selecting them in finder and
pressing command shift t. To remove from dock activate context menu with vo
shift m and go to options hit right arrow and press return on remove from dock.

Hi,

In my experience I found that you can open and collapse folders like tree views
in list view too.
Also for getting a list of useful navigation commands in finder go to the >go
menu> by pressing vo m and pressing right to go to the go menu. Press down
arrow and you will find a list of interesting commands.

Have fun,

Have trouble with adding mailbox to favorites

2011-10-06 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi all,

Don't know what I am missing but I cannot drag a mailbox to favorites. I get an
error message that the macvisionaries mailbox could not be dragged to that
location.

I know about the podcast bout would really appreciate written steps so I don't
have to download it again.

Also how do I reply to sender of message or add sender to address book?

Thanks very much,

Ioana

Re: Lion Growl no longer free

2011-10-06 Thread Darcy Burnard
Apparently it's still an open source project, and the $2 is to support the
project. According to an article I read on I think Mac World, the source code
is still available from the growl site. So if you know how to build something
from source, you could go that route.

2011-10-06 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

Well, pretty much any audio file will do so its not a question of compatibility
really. You might want to take a look at the offerings from Big fish audio at
http://www.bigfishaudio.com/

You can pretty much use loops from anywhere as long as they are AIFF, MP3 AAC
WAV or Acid WAV.

This is more fun, was Steve Jobs introducing the Macantosh in 1984

2011-10-06 Thread Karen Lewellen
Can a $2500 computer, weighing under twenty pounds and taking up
no more desk space than a piece of paper, change the world?
Improve your life? Foil Orwell's prophecies? Save Apple from the
clutches of IBM?

For your answer, meet Macintosh. Put in a three-and-a-half-inch
disc, plug in the keyboard and the "mouse" - the palm-sized
device that moves a dark pointer around the screen - and flick on
the machine. That act alone may dispel your doubts

If you have had any prior experience with personal computers,
what you might expect to see is some sort of opaque code, called
a "prompt," consisting of phosphorescent green or white letters
on a murky background. What you see with Macintosh is the Finder.
On a pleasant, light background (you can later change the
background to any of a number of patterns, if you like), little
pictures called "icons" appear, representing choices available to
you. A word-processing program might be represented by a pen,
while the program that lets you draw pictures might have a
paintbrush icon. A file would represent stored documents - book
reports, letters, legal briefs and so forth. To
see a particular file, you'd move the mouse, which would, in
