Apparently, Apple does not think I need this feature in the latest version of iCal. (grimace) While there are certainly some very fine third-party applications that will allow me to see only upcoming appointments, I am of the opinion that less is better; therefore, I resist installing such applications unless absolutely necessary. Besides, there is no guaranty that said third-party applications, for which I may have to pay a premium, will be VoiceOver (Apple’s software screen reading solution for the blind and low vision) accessible. Enter the Mac OS X Lion Dashboard of which I am growing quite fond, and all its marvelous, and for the most part free, widgets. It is with such a widget that we can view only upcoming or active appointments. Oh, keep in mind that iCal refers to appointments as events. Let’s get started. 1. Download and install a free Mac OS Dashboard widget called iCal Events. Its description is as follows: iCal Events... Face the day! Always know what's next on your schedule using iCal Events. iCal Events displays upcoming events from multiple iCal calendars in a beautiful, resizable widget for Dashboard. You can see up to two weeks of upcoming events in the same widget without needing to open iCal. 2. After installing the widget, I suggest that you close the web browser used to download the widget. 3. Now go to the Dashboard and see the widget in action. I suggest using the key combination [Option+LeftArrow] to quickly jump to the Dashboard. Please note that you can change the number of days shown in the widget by clicking on the Info button. make a usb boot drive
Hi all, Has anyone been able to create a usb boot drive using the below instructions? Subject: Build your own Lion install USB thumb drive for cheap Date: August 11, 2011 12:00:00 PM PDT Build your own Lion install USB thumb drive for cheap Why pay Apple $69.99 when you can build your own Lion install drive for the App Store purchase price of $29.99 -- plus the cost of an inexpensive thumb drive. Here's how to create a full install on a drive, not just the recovery disk that we recently posted about. You'll need a copy of the OS X Lion installer. If you saved a copy when you first installed Lion, great. If not, you'll need to re-download it from the Mac App Store. To do so, launch the App Store and option-click the Purchases tab. An "Install" button should appear next to Lion. Click it to re-download the installer. You can use this option-click-Purchases trick to re-download any purchase, not just Lion. Once the 3.74-GB installer finishes downloading, go to your Applications folder to find the installer itself. It is called Install Mac OS X Lion. Right-click (or Control-click) the installer and choose Show Package Contents from the contextual pop-up. A new Finder browser window opens, showing the normally hidden material inside the installer bundle. Navigate to Contents > SharedSupport. There you'll find a disk image called InstallESD.dmg. Open a new Finder window with Command-N (File > New Finder Window). Navigate to /Applications/Utilities and launch DiskUtility. Attach a thumb drive to your Mac that is at least 4GB 8GB in size. (Update: some readers say 4GB isn't enough. As you can see, I used a 16GB drive) Prepare it for use by creating a single HFS+ partition. Select the drive (e.g. SanDisk Ultra) in the left hand column. Drives are listed first with their partitions listed after them, each partition indented slightly. With this drive selected, click the Partition tab and choose Partition Layout > 1 Partition. Choose Format > Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click the Options button at the bottom-right of the partition layout. Select GUID Partition Table. Click Apply. Disk Utility asks you to confirm. Click Partition. Wait as it unmounts, partitions, and remounts your disk. Next, select the new partition (Untitled 1 by default). Click the Restore tab. Click Install next to the source field. Drag InstallESD.dmg into the file-open window and click Open. Drag Untitled 1 from the left column to the destination field. Click Restore and agree to Erase the drive and replace it with the contents of InstallESD.dmg. You may have to authenticate as an administrator. Wait. It will take some time for the drive to be written. Once it's done, eject it, label it clearly, and put it away for a rainy day. Meanwhile, go out and spend the $40 you just saved wisely. Direct links for downloading Voices
At last, last Friday I managed to upgrade to Lion via the App Store and wished I had done so earlier coz I am loving every moment of the new experience. However, I seem to have a problem with my network connections here. So I want to download more voices as I liked the sounds of many of them. Is there a direct link I can use to download using a download manager? The problem is that with Software Update utility, I often run into network breaks. In fact, when downloading Lion, I had to take advantage of a trip to some centre where there was wireless network in abundance. So hey if anyone knows how to get a direct link to this, help me. iTunes 10.4.1 is out
Apple has just released iTunes 10.4.1. A lot of the problems with iTunes in Lion seem to have been fixed with this update. Re: iTunes 10.4.1 is out
This version seems lightning fast, I would even say faster than 10.3. The column browser is still read out by VO as the playlist browser though and we still can't read the About iTunes window. need help with software installation
Hi. Figured I would install Flash as my first application, going to need it eventually. Got the link to download the software from youtube, downloaded it. I found the file in my download directory, and I also started the installer. When I start it up I get the usual message, am I sure I want to install. I click open, and I get a checkbox to agree to licensing terms. When I tab down there is an install link, but clicking it either with a double tap of the touch pad, pressing option command space bar or pressing the mouse click hot key I set up doesn't do anything. The Flash installer is in my dock, but I can't seem to get it further. Re: Direct links for downloading Voices
Hey Sunshine. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a direct link to download the Nuance voices. In order to download voices, your only option is to go to VO utilities and under the speech utilities go into the pop up menu button thingy that has all your voices and select customize. From there you can select what voices you want, although each voice is fairly big. Then when you hit the Ok button, software update comes up and says if you want to download these voices. Select ok. Unfortunately this is the only way to download them so if you go back to that place you were at you'll have to do that from there. HTH. Mac Mail Question
Hello again, Well, I kept researching and found another solution to my question. I just found that command option N will open a new mail window in which I can then open another mailbox. Then I can easily switch between the windows to check my inbox and my other mailbox. This works, but if anyone knows how I can change command 2 to do the trick, I'm still interested. There's no need to buy it, you can get a flash drive and make your own. You can use the lion recovery assistant application from apple to do this. Re: Direct links for downloading Voices
There's really no direct way to download these, it uses software update. Re: OpenOffice?
Nice thing about this list is you have a bunch of helpful folk who can do sanity checks when you get stuck. Either you'll get advice on how to do whatever it is that you're having trouble with or at least somebody can verify that something is broken in the same way you noticed. While I played with open office I found some stuff accessible, other parts were not or buggy. My noodling around was not exhaustive by any means and whether those broken things matter to you depends on the task you want to complete. Best test is to try to do some task with the tool and then post here is you get stuck. I did notice that Libre Office came out with a new version August 17th so I'll have to download and check whether the table navigation is working yet. Re: time script
One thing you want to ensure is that you have the "allow VoiceOver to be controlled with applescript" checkbox to be checked. This is in the general section of VoiceOver utility. If this box is checked, the script will use VoiceOver to speak the time. If it isn't, the script will use the say command to do it. There still may be a bit of a pause if you haven't used the script in a while, but it does seem to be a bit faster if that box is checked. I've seen that option in the rotor, yes. I also just assigned it to u/shift-u under single-key navigation in quik nav. It had some trouble at first, but I think it is working properly now. Restarting vo would probably have helped. Unfortunately, you can't define the size of the text chunk to use as the static text size, and I think its definition is far too small.
