Earlier iMacs don't have enough SATA ports unless you want to remove
the DVD writer and use an external one.

As far as the Mini, can't answer.

the mac osx terminal and tinyfugue

2011-07-14 Thread Deedra Waters
My husband and i are looking at the possibilities of getting a mac
mainly do to it's accessibility.

I'm curious to know how well the shell/terminal works with voiceover.
I'd heard that at one time it did not work well.

I'm also curious to find out if anyone has used tinyfugue with a mac. I
already use this under linux and ideally i'd like to use it under a mac
as well though i suspect i'll have to use the terminal to make it run.

Re: Audio Production, was: Re: using a mac full time?

2011-07-14 Thread Gary Readfern-Gray
Oh, well, an MBox is a high quality sound card. Normally, if you
record through the sound card in your Mac you won't get the quality
you need to do really good multi-track recording and mixing.

MBoxes come in different flavours but essentially the cheapest one you
can use is theMini, It has 2 big jack inputs you can use to plug a
guitar or keyboard in, and it also has Phantum power which you'll need
if you've got any condencer Microphones.

The pro also has a midi interface built in but, if you're wanting to
record your keyboard, you can get midi into your computer more cheaply
than having to get the pro.

Before Pro tools 9, the way you got into pro tools was to buy an MBox
which is made by the same people that make Pro tools, Digidesign, and
you got the mbox and the latest version of pro tools. I bought mine
new on Ebay about 15 months ago for around 250 bucks.

If you're thinking about it, You will need an MBox 2, not the mbox 1,
that won't work with pro tools 8.

You'll also ideally need one that was bought with pro tools 8 not 7,
otherwise you'll have to buy the upgrade from Digidesign.

3rdly make sure that it comes with the software and the serial number,
otherwise you won't be able to run PT on your system.

OK, but I really don't wanna buy something not fully knowing not just
 if
it's gonna be accessible but also will it meet all my needs

 for example:

 1. Can I edit audio, cropping things, paste mixing things, adding
 effects,
using pitch correction on my vocal tracks, adding effects like reverb,
panning certain tracks for a better stereo effect, raise or lower
 volume,
identify if I'm clipping on a certain track, etc.

 2. Can I over-dubb, and multi-track onto seperet tracks then
 manipulate
 the
 tracks individually?

 3. Can I record both audio as well as midi?

 4. Can I play back midi?

 5. Say I have a midi file already arranged, can I import it, and then
over-dubb all my vocal tracks, and add pitch correction and effects
 like
 reverb etc. to them?

 6. Can I import an mp3 file, then over-dubb/multi-track whatever else
 on
top of it on a seperet track?

What I mean is to change the function keys so I can use f11 for getting to the
system tray, and f 12 to check the time. Would anyone happen to know how to do
this? Right now, if I want to do either of these things, I have to hold the
function key down, then push the corresponding function key, kind of a hassle.

Hello Kliphton,

Thank you for the answer to how you got your virtual machine to recognize/see
your network attached storage.

To answer your next question, “Yes”; backing up your virtual machine means that
you will not have to reinstall or authorize any Windows software.

Kliphton, keep in mind that, regardless of how it may appear from within
Fusion, your entire virtual machine, complete with all of its settings and
installed software, is nothing but a single file. As such, merely copying the
file to another folder or drive on your Mac constitutes a backup, such as it
is.

I cannot remember where the file is stored but it’s pretty easy to locate using
Finder when you are not running Fusion.

Generally speaking, once I get my virtual machine tweaked just right, I copy
the file to a remote destination; then, should something go wrong on the
virtual machine, I simply copy it back to the appropriate destination and I’m
back in business.

It works kind of like a poor man’s version of Windows Steady-State, one of the
best pieces of software I’ve ever used.

Enjoy,

Mark

Well, instead of interacting with the tool bar with the voice over navigation,
I went to the apple menu and arrowed over to virtual machine menu. Once there
I arrowed down until I came to network adapter sub menu. Once there I made
sure network adapter was connected as well as the network to bridge directly to
my network, if you don’t tell it to bridge directly, and just auto connect, it
will just share the connection with the apple side and not see everything on
your network. By bridging directly it saw my nas storage, as well as my router
and xbox360. It’s pretty easy once you know what you’re doing. I didn’t so
had to ask questions and play around a little bit. Another question I have.
If I back up my VM machine, does that mean I don’t have to activate any of my
software again when I import it? Like office, jaws, and anything else saved
within it? That’s what someone on another list told me.

Mac Super Bundle

2011-07-14 Thread Marc Workman
Hi,

I came across another bundle that some might be interested in. I'll list the
included apps with brief descriptions along with any info I could find after a
quick search of the Mac Visionaries archives. As you will see, there is not
much info in the archives on these apps, or rather, I could not find much. I'm
hoping if anyone has experience with any of these apps he or she will share it.

It includes 10 apps. The unbundled price is $366, and the bundle price is $49.
All apps are Lion compatible or will get compatibility updates after Lion
comes out. This is of course a limited time offer. You need to pick it up by
July 27 if you want it.

For more info, visit
http://macsuperbundle.com/

1. Media iPod to Mac Transfers
iPod file transfer made easy.
No info in archives.

2. Parallels Desktop 6.
Run windows on your Mac without rebooting.
This is the jewel of the bundle, but the archives suggest it is not accessible
with VO. However, most comments refer to version 4, so I wonder if things have
improved in version 6.

3. Food Network Recipe Manager.
The easy-to-use recipe and meal manager.
No info in archives.

4. Money 4.
Keep control of your financial life.
No info in archives.

5. DVD Remaster.
The ultimate DVD re-encoding solution.
I believe this one is accessible. As pointed out by someone on this list, it
was recently on sale in the Mac appstore for $5 from $50, so I snatched it up
but haven't actually played with it much.

6. VirusBarrier X6.
Anti-virus protection reinforced.
A post on the archives says this one is accessible, but it also listed the
price at $9.99 whereas this version is supposed to be $49.95. I don't know if
they are different versions, or if there is a significant discount through the
Mac Appstore.

7. Washing Machine 2.
Protecting you and your Mac.
No info in archives.

8.Yummy FTP.
The fast, flexible, and reliable FTP client.
No info in archives.

9. Inspiration Set.
150 professional templates for Pages.
No info in archives.

10. Font Explosion Volume 2.
Professional fonts for brochures, logos, presentations and more.
No info in archives.

Hope someone finds this useful. I'm often tempted by these bundles, but this
one is less tempting than usual. If it were VM Fusion instead of Parallels, I
would definitely grab it, but I need more info before I get this bundle.

Cheers,

Marc

RE: Network problems

2011-07-14 Thread M. Taylor
Geoff,

I truly don't understand your apparent hostility towards me nor your desire
to publicly insult someone to whom you don't bother to extend the most basic
of courtesies.

Are you incapable of asking me a question without attacking my character?

Geoff, it has been said by those wiser than I, that people tend to view
others as they view themselves; something we should all keep in mind before
we attack those with whom we have never met.

Regardless of the mean-spirited tone of your post, I am certain that you are
a nice person who wishes to help others and this is why I have decided to
pay you the respect you clearly do not think I deserve by both ignoring your
antagonistic remarks and answering your question said answer being the
following:

The reason I responded to Ed, on-list, is so that other list members would
know that a reply was posted. Moreover, it has been my experience that few,
if any, tend to reply to network issues for the reasons stated in the post
to which I am referring. Some members, who receive few or, in some cases,
no replies to a question may take it personally and I, like you, don't want
anyone to feel as though they are being ignored, pre-judged, or attacked.

That is All.

Re: iTunes question?

2011-07-14 Thread Esther
Hi Kliph,

I'll paste in a reply I gave to Neil Barnfather on the viphone list, since
there's no easy way to point you to an archive link or search for that list.
The short answer is that my guess is that consolidating library is either
unnecessary for you, because you're starting out with a fresh installation, or
a bad thing, if you have attached lots of disks from your Windows iTunes days,
and don't let iTunes manage/organize your files.

Consolidating your library in iTunes moves all your files to the iTunes Media
Folder location specified on the Advanced pane of your iTunes Preferences -- in
your case, this is on an externally located disk. You can read more about this
in the iLounge tutorial on "Transferring your iTunes Library" under the heading
"Consolidate: The Right Way".

Here's the URL link to the iLounge Mobile version of the article:
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/mobile/articles/moving-your-itunes-library-to-a-new-hard-drive/
and here's the same link to the full browser iLounge version:
• "Transferring your iTunes Library" by Jesse David Hollington September 21,
2009
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to-a-new-hard-drive/
(The regular ilounge site has lots of images and visual ads, so is a nuisance
to navigate. The easiest way to read its content is to put a link to the mobile
site on your iOS device home page:
http://www.ilounge.com/mobile/

I'll excerpt a bit of the content below. It refers to explanations about how
your iTunes library keeps track of content that are given earlier in the
article:

"What the Consolidate files option actually does is to gather all of the files
listed in your iTunes library into the iTunes Media folder. It does this by
copying any referenced files into the iTunes Media folder, renaming them with
the proper track name, and organizing them into its standard file and folder
structure. This option is at least partly intended to allow you to bring
“referenced” files into the iTunes Media folder from various other locations in
the event that you may have added them to your library with the “Copy Files”
option disabled."

For more information about the iLounge iTunes tutorials, see my reply to
Deborah Armstrong's "I've made my peace with iTunes (mostly)" post from last
week, that gives links to others of these guides:

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg44182.html

Unless you let iTunes organize your library, and keep all your music in the
current default library location, which many if not most users coming from
Windows don't want to do, you don't want to use "consolidate library". This
feature is great if you decide to move all your music to a new external disk,
have added all sorts of folders to your iTunes Library, that reside in lots of
different directories and folders outside your library, and don't want to have
to track each and every one down: you can change the default location for your
iTunes Media folder location on the Advanced pane of your iTunes preferences to
point to that new external drive, and then use the "consolidate library" option
on the menu to move everything to the new location. But if your default
library location is pointing to a location on your hard drive, and you don't
let iTunes manage your library entries (which includes renaming to match the
default file structure iTunes adopts), then iTunes will make copies of all the
files that you have added to your library, but have not let it rename and
manage (because they are not filed under the default location for your iTunes
library), and you will run out of disk space.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi.

No info in archives.

Hope someone finds this useful. I'm often tempted by these bundles, but this
one is less tempting than usual. If it were VM Fusion instead of Parallels, I
would definitely grab it, but I need more info before I get this bundle.

Cheers,

Flash to HTML5; Can it be done?

2011-07-14 Thread Doug Lawlor
Hello list:
I am looking for either a Safari Extension or plugin that will allow me to
convert any flash video to HTML5. I've seem extensions that will let me do this
with Youtube videos but not videos from other sites. I'm taking a course that
has lots of flash videos and am wondering if there is something available that
can do this.

Thanks in advance,

Doug

2011-07-14 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi Doug,

ClickToFlash is an extension that handles several other sites besides youtube.
I'm not sure if it will play the videos on the site you need, but there's
always a chance. ClickToPlugin is by the same author, and includes all of the
features from ClickToFlash and adds the ability to convert silverlight and
windows media content as well. Here is the web site for the both extensions.

watching dVDs on my MBP?

2011-07-14 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I'm sitting here trying to watch a Boston Legal DVd on my Macbook Pro. The
only things I can seem to navigate to are the first episode on the disk, and
the extra material. I've gone into the menu and manually selected subsequent
titles, but to no avail. Something called a controler window opened, and I
tried selecting using the buttons there, but that didn't work either. Lastly,
I tried activating the Trackpad commander, because I thought maybe I could
scroll down that way, but that didn't work either. I'm wondering if others are
able to watch DVDs on the Mac? If the DVD player isn't accessible, is there
some other app people are using? I also tried bringing it into iTunes, but so
far haven't been able to. If you are using the DVD player, how do you navigate
different episodes on a disk?

I appreciate any help.
Best,
Donna

Hi Justin:
I've got Click2Flash installed but it just doesn't do it for this site. If I
get myself on a video using VO I just hear the keyword Flash which gives me no
option to click on it to get any results. The worst thing about these videos is
that they do not play when the page for the video is loaded. This is even
without Click2Flash installed.

Re: Flash to HTML5; Can it be done?

2011-07-14 Thread Justin Ekis
I can't remember if ClickToFlash is set to convert videos to html5 by default
or not, so here's how to check.

Press option+comma for the ClickToFlash preferences. At first I kept pressing
command+comma for safari preferences and wondering where these settings were
supposed to be. A frame will show up at the bottom of the page. Interact with
the frame and press VO+space on html5 replacements. The categories will not
appear as links but doing this still works. Make sure everything is checked.
Now go back to the list of categories and press VO+space on media player. Check
the box to load the media player automatically.

I just thought of another trick to try if ClickToFlash is unable to play your
videos. Some sites have an alternative interface for iOS devices, since they do
not work with flash content. It is possible to have safari tell the site that
you are on iOS.

Press command+comma for safari preferences, and then go to the advanced
settings. Check the box to show the develop menu in the menu bar, and then
close preferences. In the develop menu, go to the user agent sub menu and
choose any of the options to identify as an iOS device. The page will refresh,
and just maybe present some more accessible form of video.

Hope this was more helpful.

Re: Flash to HTML5; Can it be done?

2011-07-14 Thread Chris Blouch
Flash is a tricky thing, videos or otherwise. There has been an ongoing
spat where Adobe has not hooked Flash into Apple's accessibility APIs so
there is no voiceover access to flash widgets. Why this happened is
another topic of discussion but even if they did, the results would be
mixed to poor as it is on Windows today. Most Flash developers just
don't seem to know or care about labeling buttons and other things to
make their widgets accessible. So the shift to html5 instead of flash
can only improve things. Under the hood most flash video players are
pulling a video file and these are often just standard mpeg4, so the
trick is to figure out what that file URL is and pull it into another
accessible player. That's what clicktoflash and the youtube html5
players do. Is the content coming from youtube? Then it should play in
their html5 player. Do you have the actual video files? If so then there
are probably ways to get them converted to something playable.

huge accessability problems when creating and using my apple id anoying!

2011-07-14 Thread Claus Thøgersen

Hi,

I have sent this to the accessability team at Apple. It is really anoying
for a person like me who has been on the net since 1994, to have to use more
than 10 hours and still failing to get my apple id accepted in the app
store!

Hi,

I have now used countless hours on something that should

be a simple task. I want to create my apple ID, actually it is created.
Now I want to transfer some free apps to my Iphone.
Here as you can see in the following mails I run t into strange and
anoying problems, First of all your audio captchas are like most others
useless. There are other options simply to present the user with a simple
problem like "wich word are different from the other out of 5, or what is
two plus two. These accessable alternatives to cpatchas have a name wich I
just cannot find.
So the process of creating an apple id is inaccessabl.e at least for blind
users.

When I want to download an App actually a free app after I used webvisum
to get past the captcha without using the useless audio alternative.
After login on the app store, I am asked to review my setttings for my
apple id. Here something goes wrong because there is a field that the app
store decides is filled out incorrectly maybe more.
Here is again another case of obvious total lack of accessability. I am
told that there is a problems with the fields marked in a certain collour
I cannot remember. Crearly this violates both WCAG 2 and section 508.
Since apple with VO and the Iphone has probably the best reputation for
providing blind people free access to computer hardware, I think these
accessability erros should be corrected. It should not be tasks that take
too many resources to fix.

Hi,
I am just now, trying this out again for, at some point it must be
possible to get through this unnecessary and anoying second check of
information that Apple does already have from the creation of the Apple
ID.
this is w where I get stock all the time:

5) You will see a dialog saying this: "This Apple ID has not yet been
used with the iTunes Store. Please review your account information."
Click Review and follow the onscreen instructions to sign in with the
account. You will need to enter the 3 digit security code from the back
of your credit card when prompted.

There is a number that the system wants and my screenreader JAWS for
Windows using Itunes latest version of Itunes on Windows XP sp3. JFW can
only announce that there is a code I need to input, but nothing about
wich code it is.
I am going to try this out now, on my Windows 7 machine, Using JFW v 12,
and if that does not work on my Mac Mini 10.7 with voiceover.

apple is doing a fantastic job with the free screen reader Voiceover so
it is really a terrible setback for your accessability efforts that it is
so hard almost impossible even for a very skilled screen reader user to
get accesss to apps for my Iphone!
I hope you can address these issues and have them discussed with the
people responsible for the broader accessability efforts at Apple.

Claus

Hello again,

I wanted to send a quick note to see if you are still experiencing any
difficulties with the iTunes Store. Resolving your issue is important to
me, so please don't hesitate to reply if you need any further
assistance.

Sincerely,

Cheryl
Senior iTunes Store/Mac App Store Customer Support
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to assist you.

Hello Claus,

I understand that you have been having some difficulties with purchasing
from the App Store. I realize how eager you must be for a resolution,
Claus, and apologize for the delay in a response to your request. My
name is Cheryl and I will be happy to help in any way that I can.

I have checked our systems and have been unable to locate an existing
iTunes Store account with the email address "c.th...@gmail.com."

It appears, however, that there is an Apple ID called
"c.th...@gmail.com" in Apple's customer database. This means you don't
need to create a new Apple ID, since you can use that Apple ID as your
iTunes Store account name.

Here's how to access the iTunes Store using that Apple ID and its
password:

1) Make sure you're using the latest version of iTunes. It's available
free of charge from the Apple website at:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download

2) Open iTunes.

3) From the Store menu, choose Sign In.

4) Click the Apple radio button, enter your Apple ID and its password,
and click Sign In

Re: roomer has it that lion won't be released today?

2011-07-14 Thread Shen
I was going to say tomorrow, Friday, July 15th.
Apple generally likes to make a big splash when it releases something no matter
what it is.
But Spotify just about took the spotlight away today. So I think it's going to
be next week.
Although I hear the stores in China are closed overnight to load new shipments
of Mac computers. So there's still a good chance Lion will be released tomorrow.

Are you people that impatient and itchy? Lion will be out when it is out. Apple
is not going to speed things up just because we are here talking about it.
Remember the announcement at WWDC is that Lion will be released in July. Today
is July 14th, Apple still has 17 days.
