RE: PDF files

2011-06-29 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
I will give it a try, and thanks for replying to my e-mail. No one else on
this list has replied, so I'm assuming that I'm the only one who has
encountered the problem thus far.

Cordially,
Rafael

Rafaeel,

I have not tried it myself as I haven't got a multi-column document to test it,
and it is just a thought - but try highlighting the content of your document by
pressing command+a and copying it to clipboard and then pasting into TextEdit.

Good luck.

Re: modifying attributes of a track in Amadeus

2011-06-29 Thread Thomas Byskov Dalgaard
Hi Chris!

As far as I know the only way to change the track is to hit the n as in Nancy.
You get no feedback from Voiceover. But you can check the selected track by
hiting shift and space bar. Then you'll only hear the track wihch is selected
for editing.
Hope this helps.

Installing Drivers after installing via Bootcamp?

2011-06-29 Thread James Malone
Hi folks, yesterday I decided to install Windows on my Mac Mini. The
installation itself went smoothly, but my screen will not display when i boot
into Windows. I assume this has to do with my screen drivers. Anyway, that's
not the issue. Seeing as I don't have a screen that a sighted person can read,
how do I install the Windows drivers on to my Mac?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
James

The thing is this. Once you have selected a track for editing, how then do you
move through ony that track for editing? Every time I try it, the curser moves
through both tracks. I know that because I hear the scrubbing in both stereo
channels rather than just the one or the other.

Re: installed ram with no sited asistence!

2011-06-29 Thread
Well, there is a panel on the bottom of your Imac, with three screw, once you
undo those, it's pretty much smooth sailing, you pull the tabs, to take out the
exigzisting ram, or if your just adding too it, find the empty slot and slide
it on in. You have to apply a little pressure, so it snaps in to place. Screw
the pannel back on, and your done. If you email me off list I could send you
the link of the youtube video that taught and gave me the confidence to do it.

Oh, the first thing you must do is turn off your Imac, unplug everything from

using adium

2011-06-29 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hello, all. This is my first post to the group. I've only had my macbook pro
for about 6 weeks now, and freely admit that I
don't know much about it yet.
Over all, I can get it to do what I want most of the time, but I'm writing
because I'm having a very frustrating problem. I'm
not very much into the social networking thing. I do, in fact, only use twitter
on a regular basis on my PC.
Well, for several reasons that aren't particularly relevant, I need to try to
use some other instant messengers, at least
short term. I don't want any of the windows live junk on my main pc, so decided
that if I do any instant messaging at all,
I'll use the mac. It will be good practice and keep clutter off my main
computer.
Well, I've installed the newest version of adium, and have hooked it up with
msn, facebook, google chat and yahoo messenger.
All of my contacts are there, but I can't actually have conversations with them.
I was trying to test it with a friend just now, and she doesn't receive my
messages, and I can't read her responses. At the
moment, I'm just really, really glad Adium was free, because unless I'm missing
something, which is entirely possible, it
isn't VO-friendly at all. Still, I know a lot of folks, especialy on twitter
swear by it, so clearly, I'm missing something.
Are there configuration options I need to change? The menus don't work very
well, but I can try to figure them out if I know
what I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide, and I hope that everyone
is having a great day!
Missy

Hi!

I have used Facebook and Windows Live with Adium without any issues. Try the
following when you notice that someone wrote a message to you:
1. Press vo-left arrow until VOiceover says: Unknown. Interact here, and press
vo-fn-shift-right arrow to go to the last message in the log... Or what this
command does is go to the bottom of the area in which you are at.

RE: using adium

2011-06-29 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! Thanks for this information. I believe I've tried this: interracting with
the unknown area, but no text was revealed by
doing so. So, am I understanding correctly that conversations won't be read out
automatically by voice-over?? Seems a bit
tedius. I remember the old days; we're talking 8-10 years ago, when MSN
messenger was really popular. Most of the times, Jaws
just read messages as they were received, and using the software was almost
pleasant; I was in a hogwarts RPG at the time, so
used messenger even though I didn't like it much. Then, the group disbanded, or
I lost interest; can't remember which. I
started having trouble with messenger, especially once I upgraded to xp, and
now that I have win 7 and that live stuff is the
only option, I just don't want to fool with it.
Sorry for the ramble, but I'm just trying to understand. it sounds like Adium
isn't going to be quite as useable an
alternative as I had hoped. I'm hoping my need for such software is short term
indeed.
If any of you want to add me on msn, you can do so using my email address:
melis...@fuse.net.
I'm on yahoo messenger under mitmee_pie, and google talk under mitmee.pie.
Facebook is also my email address: melis...@fuse.net.
I suppose you could add me to skype too. I'm mitmee_pie there as well.
Of course, my ideal for correspondance is twitter, where I'm mitmee_pie, or
just good, old-fashioned email.
But maybe if some of you techies add me on the other instant messengers, it can
help me learn it and understand it a bit
better.

Hi!

I have used Facebook and Windows Live with Adium without any issues. Try the
following when you notice that someone wrote a
message to you:
1. Press vo-left arrow until VOiceover says: Unknown. Interact here, and press
vo-fn-shift-right arrow to go to the last
message in the log... Or what this command does is go to the bottom of the area
in which you are at.

RE: using adium

2011-06-29 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! where in preferences is that an option: setting everything to speak? I've
looked under events, and just got totally
confused. I couldn't find any preferences like that, and navigating the
preferences window in adium is a lot tougher than it
seems to be in most other applications. I've got a lot of free time now, so
will start looking for that option again.
Thanks!

2011-06-29 Thread Missy Hoppe
thanks again. I've been playing in the events tab, but can't get anything to
change, and assuming I can even find options,
speak is never one of them. Closest I can find is display a growl notification,
but only the first few items seem to allow
interaction of any kind. Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong? am about to
fight with it a bit more to see if I can make
any progress, but events is where I've been looking, and if it's customizeable,
I'm sure not seeing it.
Sorry for being so dense; I'm sure it will make sense eventually. Are there any
good audio podcasts demonstrating how to do
this?

Type your message, and press enter again. Now, to read responses, move to the
thing that VO has labeled unknown. Interact with it, and you'll see your
messages and the responses. This is what you'll do with each contact you
message.

Hope this was helpful.

Having trouble selecting text

2011-06-29 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I have a feeling I'm missing something really simple, because I'm guessing this
really shouldn't be that hard.

I use command shift and the up or down arrows to select text, but it doesn't
seem to work. If I'm in a list of files, and I want to select two or three of
them, it somehow selects them all. If I'm on a website, it selects the first
few lines, but then, VO stops speaking.

Any thoughts?

RE: using adium

2011-06-29 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hello there! I just wanted to let you know that I finally figured it out. I
have all events set to play a sound and speak
aloud now. Some of them don't seem to have a sound by default, but I'm guessing
I can try to edit that at a later date. For
now, everything should speak, at least in theory, and the most important events
should have sounds as well. I still think
that Adium is a lot more complicated than it needs to be, but then again, I'm
still so new to Mac, that maybe navigating it
will become second nature eventually.
Anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I really appreciate it a
lot.

Yes, sorry about that. Preferences and that you want the events tab. Select it
and all the settings will show up.

Hi, Shannon,

Command-shift-up-and-down-arrows select to the beginning and end of text. If
you want to select line by line, use shift-up-and-down-arrows instead. When
selecting files in a list, turn off cursor tracking with shift-VO-f3, navigate
to each file with VO-arrows, and use VO-command-space to select them. Turn on
cursor tracking again, once you've copied the files.

It's possible to configure Growl to read Adium's messages. If you're hearing
the little chiming alert sound that says messages from your various contacts
are coming in, then it's working, but you're not telling VO to announce the
right part of the screen. There are a couple of things you can do to make it
not so tedious, though I admit, it's often not quite as seamless as the old AOL
IM client and such used to be:
•1) In Adium's Preferences, under "events," you can configure growl to speak
incoming messages, alerts, status changes, etc. This is useful but ...
abstract. :) Find me on Skype or somehow if I may assist.

•2) Once you've interacted with the "unknown," frame, which is where all the
messages appear, you can press VO Shift F3 to turn off cursor tracking. Now,
provided you don't leave that window, simply pressing VO right-arrow once will
make VO say the message you just got. Not as bad as all that, considering that
even with the older system, you had to shift-tab, up and down arrow, etc.

Again, find me if I can help.

Good timing. I had a weird Adium issue as well. At least I think I traced it to
Adium. Once in a while VoiceOver would start saying "Row 1 expanded." Over and
over again. It started driving me nuts. I quit Adium and the problem stopped. I
guess row 1 refers to the contact list? Has anyone else wrestled with this
issue and overcame it? I dig Adium but I have to fix that. It seems like it
could use a few little accessibility tweaks, but I enjoyed it while it worked
except for that.

Yeah, row one expanded or Adium has new window happen here, too, but not
repeatedly, unless someone is playing silly buggers on the messenger, in which
case those people find themselves summarily blocked and taunted... It doesn't
really bother me, but I agree that Adium is a bit unwieldy, especially when it

Re: Update on mac running hot, from bad to worse!

2011-06-29 Thread Jon Cohn
I wonder if you are having issues with one of the preference files? I looked
around on my Macintosh, and did not find anything in ~/Library/Preferences with
"spell" in the name. There is a "spell" directory within the library that has
your private dictionary. Perhaps if you move that directory temporarily to a
safe place and then try to get the spell check to go hot.

Esther also recommended that perhaps you want to turn off Spell as you type
option. This would mean you would not get blips or other notifications as soon
as you type a mis-spelled word, but does take that whole spelling check out of
the keyboard input stream.

I hope all of the above makes sense.

Best wishes,

Re: Installing Drivers after installing via Bootcamp?

2011-06-29 Thread Jon Cohn
The last step in installing bootcamp is to insert your Snow Leopard disk into
the system while you are running windows. This should ask you to install the
boot camp drivers.

Did you do this?

Hi there!
Just a couple of things!
Has the original poster set up facebook under Jabber!
If not you'll need to do that!
And after interacting with the unknown field and are at the bottom of the list
of messages, and have turned off cursor tracking!
All you'll have to do is start typing after reading the last message and it
will take you straight into the edit field!
And just press return to send it, and as before just use the right arrow to
read your message you've just sent and then the reply!
Please let us know if you need instructions for facebook! :]

yep. It took forever, but I think I've more or less got it set up correctly.
the question is: will it still talk to me if I
happen to be in another window when a new event happens. For example, if I'm
listening to pandora on pianopub, or working on
a document in text edit, will I still get notifications spoken?
Thanks!

Hi Chris!

As far as I know the only way to change the track is to hit the n as in
Nancy. You get no feedback from Voiceover. But you can check the selected
track by hiting shift and space bar. Then you'll only hear the track wihch
is selected for editing.

Hope this helps.

for instance, I have a karaoke track that I start with, then I do
command+Option+R to record my vocals on a new track. I get them done, but
then I want to say... add reverb to just the vocal track without doing so

You can get a 30-day trial of VMWare Fusion from
http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/overview.html

You'll need to register before you can download it.

When you do, don't forget to get the serial number from the download page
to register it for your 30-day trial. It's not particularly obvious and
it's easy to miss if you're not paying attention.

question about apple mail

2011-06-29 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hello again, all! I'm wondering if it's possible to set up apple mail to use my
Gmail address? I set one up so that I could
use google talk, and don't plan to use it for much, but if I could set up apple
mail to use it, that would at least give me a
chance to learn the program a bit.
I don't want apple mail to use my primary email address just because I have all
my archives and stuff set up on the main
system, so don't want the mac to get email that I need to file away. So, if
it's possible to set it up for use with gmail,
that would be great!
Thank you very much for your time, and I hope that everyone is having an
awesome day!

Yes, it is possible, and it even actually knows the g mail server, but it sets
it up as IMap by default, so if you want pop3, you need to change it, and

The advantage is that you can use the same installation either in Boot
Camp mode or as a VM, instead of having two separate installs. Then you
can run it in whichever mode suits at the time.

It's also worth noting that, at least in our experience, even though you
tell it to use POP3, it doesn't change the port number from 993 to 995.
If this happens to you, it will just not work and won't be clear why.

To fix it, go to Mail Preferences, choose Accounts from the toolbar and
select the Advanced Preferences tab.

Re: Questions about running Windows on a Mac

2011-06-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hi.

Your question asking if BootCamp or Fusion is the best for running Windows on a
Mac has no definitive answer as the word "best" is subjective.

Both BootCamp and VM Ware Fusion will allow a blind or low-vision Mac user to
run Windows effectively on a Mac.

I use them both and have always been happy with the results.

RE: question about apple mail

Sadly, I have no clue. I had nothing to lose, so just recreated the account. I
can see where that wouldn't be good, though,
if you already have established folders and lots of mail.
Speaking of which, how do I make new folders, one for saved messages, one for
jokes, etc. Also, there's no outbox. Is that
normal? Does stuff just immediately go to sent items? I don't see a drafts
folder either. Clearly, I still have tons to learn
about apple mail, which was why I thought it would be best to configure it with
a non-essential email address.
Good luck switching to pop3. I know I have always liked it better than imap.

Hi Ray,
Well, one of us will have to start at the previous version of the software, and
install each thing one at a time and see where it begins to pop up. I think I
pretty much narrowed it down to either the system sound plugin or the
scheduling plugin. If I were to lay odds, I'd bet the system sound was the
culprit, but they both got updates.

Which method is easier for a blind user? I've heard that you need sighted

Hi.

Your question asking if BootCamp or Fusion is the best for running Windows
on a Mac has no definitive answer as the word "best" is subjective.

Both BootCamp and VM Ware Fusion will allow a blind or low-vision Mac user
to run Windows effectively on a Mac.

I use them both and have always been happy with the results.

Hi there! Where could I find these garage band tutorials? Are they audio files?
I learn best from audio demos. Would there be

There is the Rogue Amoeba Schedule Helper that is running all of the time. So
it does not matter if you launch audio high jack pro or not.

Well, was really hesitant to try this, but after reading some community

running 12. After completing this task, booted it up, went to about
this mac, and it told me the model of the ram, and that it was 12Gb

Re: 10.6.8 May Solve VO crashing problems!

2011-06-29 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Ray,
The fact is that at least in my case I didn't experience any of these crashes
until I'd installed Audio Hijack and its plugins. That was a span of about
three months from when I got my MBP. Now, I've uninstalled both, and the
crashes haven't happened yet.
Best,
Zack.

Re: 10.6.8 May Solve VO crashing problems!

2011-06-29 Thread Dan
Hello,
Let me add a little more to this discussion. I have never had Audio Hijack or
any of it's needed utilities on any of my recent installations of OSX and I
still have the crashing problems. I am running OS X 10.6.8.

Re: 10.6.8 May Solve VO crashing problems!

2011-06-29 Thread Chris Snyder
Ray,
The problem persists whether or not you launch it. It starts when you install
it and update it and its plugins. It must be something to do with what it does
to alter the system.
I have zapped it and restarted, and thus far I've not had a problem. (touch
wood.)

Friendly,
Chris

Re: installed ram with no sited asistence!

2011-06-29 Thread
I already had 4GB, and bought 8 more. On most computers the headphone jack is
first, then the microphone. But This imac has a microphone built in to it, I
use it on face time all the time while talking to my wife. So there are 4
USB's, 2 thunder bolts, and a fire wire I think. Don't quote me on this one,
went over them once with my wife when we first got it, and don't really
remember. This mid 2011 imac can hold up to 16GB, but like some say oon this
list and others, if your not gaming or running a lot of vieo and audio editing,
then any more than 8 wouldn't be necessary.

Well, was really hesitant to try this, but after reading some community
forms, and watching 2 youtube videos of it being done, I decided to go
ahead and try doing it myself. It's probably the easiest thing I've ever
done on a computer. So I put 8 more gigs of ram into my Imac, now running
 12. After completing this task, booted it up, went to about this mac, and
it told me the model of the ram, and that it was 12Gb instead of the 4 it
came with. So I saved a mountain of money by buying it from crucial.com
and installing myself. Oh, the reason this is such a
big deal to me is I am totally blind, and needed no help at all, except
for the tutorials and forms I access, but who doesn't do that? Thanks for
 listening.

.flack on the Mac

2011-06-29 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Sounds like some kind a movie title huh. Flack on da Mac. LOL! Anyway...
no, seriously, heheheheh... I have a whole discography here of an artist
that a friend gave me. It's about 25 discs all total. Problem is, they're
all .flack files. the last I recall, ITunes wouldn't play these. I know I
could easily enough use VLC, or maybe even Cogg, but the whole idea was to
get these into my ITunes and eventually on my IPod touch. I would use
Switch from NCH, but I can't afford it. Is there not some free sollution?
I got Amadeus Pro, but it's a real old version, only 1.1, as I can't afford
the updates, and seeing I got about 25 albums to do? Um? Unless there is a
tach converter? I'm not terribly sure I wanna do each file one? by one!
God, that would be annoying!

Any suggestions?

Chris.

Re: [Bulk] import location and format?

2011-06-29 Thread Ray Foret Jr
That depends on how you have things set up. By default, ITunes is set so that
when you insert a music CD, (assuming of course that this is what you mean),
the CD will rip in to your machine and the format will be in the .4ma which is
a form of mp4 file format. IF I'm not mistaken, you'll find the ripped files
under the ITunes foler in the music section. Could be wrong about that because
I've fooled with it since then and changed this and that.

Re: Installing Drivers after installing via Bootcamp?

2011-06-29 Thread James Malone
Yeah I did, but how would one be able to interact with that
notifications if they were blind? I have no working screen in windows
for whatever reason, seeing as even the most basic screen opperations
can be done without drivers. Therefore, I can't get anyone to read it
to me.

Re: Questions about running Windows on a Mac

2011-06-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hi,

You know, it's been some time since I last installed bootcamp on a Mac but I
did not require sighted assistance; but I do enjoy some residual vision.

I am comfortable in saying that installing Windows via VM Ware Fusion can be
done autonomously.
