VueScan working great for OCR
I've been in contact with Ed Hamrick, the developer of VueScan. The latest version of VueScan now works great. I just had to press Cmd-N to produce a beautiful RTF file of an article from New SCientist magazine. I haven't yet got the RTF file to open automatically, but I'm working on it. As far as I'm concerned, this is the simplest OCR solution on the Mac so far. You can download VueScan from: http://www.hamrick.com/ There are two Mac versions, 32 bit and 64 bit. I tested the 64 bit version. Cheers, Anne -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: VueScan working great for OCR
Hello søren, VueScan now supports 29 languages. I wouldn't be interested if it only supported English. That's what makes DocuScan a complete non-starter for me. It even supports Chinese, Japanese and Korean, not to mention all the European languages I can think of. Cheers, Anne On Jun 10, 2011, at 9:17 AM, Søren Jensen wrote: > Hi. > Thanks for the info. iMac 27in Late 2010 model for sale
Dear All, A quick note, firstly, please do not reply on list, be it to ask a question etc, as its not the place for such things. if you'd like to know more, please drop me a line to for...@talknav.com, with iMac in the subject line. as many of you will know I made the switch to Mac back in October last year, and have been a delighted convert since... I now own an Imac, MacBook Air and MacMini. I'm looking to sell my iMac to upgrade to the version with the SSD and as such would like to know if anyone is interested in the below. one little thing to note, I'm in the UK, and whilst I'm happy to talk with anyone overseas about buying this from me, you should note that international shipping costs are likely to add up to £100 US$180 to anything we agree, this is a rough estimate, but worth noting. Apple do sell with international warranties and as such, the Apple Care goes with the machine anywhere, to anyone who might buy this. So here's the juicy specification of my beast. iMac 27in (Late 2010 model) 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 1Tb SATA 7,200rpm hard drive, standard HD graphics card for the 27in iMac of the late 2010 models. Magic Mouse, Wireless Keyboard (British English) Apple Care with 2.5 years remaining on it, If you require further statistics or info please as I say feel free to e-mail me off list. I have not got in my mind yet a figure for how much I will sell it for, but am open to offers. The machine retailed at £1,650 from memory, but may have been a little more, and the Apple Care of course is worth a good few hundred more. Thanks all for your time. Annoying security issue
Hi. I've just bought a new awesome Tv tuner and the full version of EyeTv. I've installed EyeTv on both Mac computers, and it works without any issues on my MacBook Pro. When my Mac Mini boots up, it comes up with an error telling me that Eye connect hasn't ben started because it doesn't have the right security settings. I don't have any idea on how or where to start it since it's just a service and not the EyeTv app. My firewall is turned off in OSX and I've opened the required port on my router. The Eye Connect is required for communication between EyeTv and my Iphone on a 3g connection. I really hope someone can help here because I'm totally lost. app suggestions?
OKay, I've seen a bunch of threads suggesting various facebook and twitter apps, along with IM apps. Is there something that is accessible that intergrates all of them? And is there a mac version of Aim, that was a big one for me on windows, since I was able to bring twitter and fb together at the same time. Thanks. Re: VueScan working great for OCR
Hello, After test driving VueScan, this is my feeling about it. The only thing that's keeping me from purchasing VueScan is that it doesn't have an auto orientation feature. Call me picky, I guess, but I really don't want to full around with setting the orientation every time, especially if I'm not always sure that pages are always in the same orientation. Example, mail that has already been removed from the envelope and has been for what ever reason separated and may not all be in the same orientation. While it's a little more involved, as far as scanning is concerned, when I use save in pdf image, with my HP PhotoSmart C7280 printer and ABBYY Fine Reader Express, I don't ever need to worry about the orientation. For ease of use, I really would purchase VueScan if it had this one really needed feature. Jut my thoughts regarding VueScan. Re: VueScan working great for OCR
Hello Krister, You can download them both and see which works for you. You don't have to pay for it straight off. I think it puts a watermark on the scan until it's licensed. I forgot to mention that it doesn't take care of orientation, but if it doesn't produce something sensible, you can always press Cmd-L to rotate the image to the left, or Cmd-R to rotate to the right. Hi Anne, Thanks so much for posting all this. I ended up canceling my order for a Snapscan, and will instead be ordering an Epson WorkForce GTS50, which I believe has a more standard set of drivers. Re: time and hot keys?
Hi Kliphton! OK To get the time working! Open vo utility [vo+f8 you should be in the general settings! Scroll to the [allow vo to be controlled by apple scripts] and check it! Next press command+8 that will take you to the commanders settings! Select the keyboard tab and next to that enable keyboard commander check box and do so! After that you will have the option to choose either the left or right options key! It should be set on the right one! Next to that is the table of shortcuts there should be some in there already, one of which is the say time one! Of course this is where you'll put your own [when you make them] So if you want Skype on a key select add button you'll get a box to put the letter you wish for Skype [ safari already has the S] Put in your letter of choice then go to the menu of commands button and open it, you'll have all of the vo commands and others for you to scroll through! But at the bottom is custom commands open that and select applications then you can find Skype and select it! So to open Skype from then on just press the option key and the main key you chose for Skype! Just one more thing someone once asked if you could choose which option key for each shortcut! Answer no, its either one or the other for all! As for your Itunes Question. Do you mean from CD's! hth On 10 Jun 2011, at 03:56, Kliph&Sharrie wrote: > So I read a post the other day, saying you could enable vo to read you the > time by hitting command T, but can't remember how to enable it. Thank you to Joanne for the wonderful post on Quicknav
Hi Joanne, I wanted to thank you so much for the hlelpful post on Quicknav. I know about the Item Chooser and like you, this has to be one of my favorite features in VoiceOver. But I have encountered problems with Quicknav. I have accidentally turned it on, cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone would want to use it, till I read your post. I'm sure that most of you know this already but Quicknav proves very useful with the Iphone. My Mac is well .. we won't go there, long story short it's down again. I'm waiting for Apple to send a replacement. So I'm religated to the Iphone right now. Navigating webpages has proven very frustrating without my item chooser. I've tried to press VO U to bring up links list on the page, but the Iphone just sits and does nothing. Needless to say, my time on the net is frustrating. After reading Joanne's post, I was able to figure out how to get it to switch from headers to links and language too. I just wanted to say thank you. While I'm a little frustrated being without my Mac, Joanne's post makes using the Iphone to navigate websites much easier. The Iphone makes not having the Mac bearable. Can't wait for the Mac to come back. Apple has been great in resolving this, they really don't like having unhappy customers :) Have a great day everyone. Garageband: Joining Regions
Hi, I'm working on a recording in GarageBand. I have a track where I cut out a few parts in the middle, so now there are several regions. I wanted to join the regions, but when I do so, it reverts to the original track, readding the parts that I deleted. Do you know why this might be and how to join it without that happening? Re: time and hot keys?
Is there a way to get it where when I do my right option+t for edate/time, it'll say 24 hour time instead of 12 hour? I set the clock in system prefs to 24, but that didn't seem to have any effect, unless I double vo+M/ctrl+F8, then go over to the clock, but that's more work than I like when I can just hit one keystroke. Hi, To move a message to another folder, assuming that folder has already been created, press Control Option Shift M to bring up the context menu for that message. Arrow up to move to and press right arrow. Arrow down to the folder and press enter. The next time you open the context menu for any message, when you arrow up there will be a moveto again option showing the most recent folder you moved a message to. If you want that just press enter on it, otherwise, keep arrowing up to move to and choose a different folder. To choose addresses for any field in a new message, press control option I for the item chooser. Type ad and press enter to go to the addresses button. Press space bar on the addresses button. Tab to the list of people and choose who you want then press enter. You will be returned to the edit field with the address you selected filled in. To add multiple addresses, simply select multiple people from your address book, or type them in separated by semicolons like this. e...@erik-burggraaf.com; y...@yourname.com If you start typing eri and e...@erik-burggraaf.com comes up, press the right arrow once to accept the auto-complete suggestion. Hi there! Also for addresses you can just press command+option+A and that will open your address book! If you go to the people table and interact as you go through all your names with down arrow, when you get to a name you wish to add to the send field just press the return/enter button then go on down to the next name you wish to add and do the same! When you get to the last name you wish to add just stop interacting [no need to press enter on the last name] and then scroll to the [to] button and press vo space! Then command+w to close the address book! In the to field will be listed all the names you picked! They'll say something like fred blogs menu button for each name! hth Colin On 10 Jun 2011, at 19:00, erik burggraaf wrote: > Hi, > > To move a message to another folder, assuming that folder has already been > created, press Control Option Shift M to bring up the context menu for that > message. > Arrow up to move to and press right arrow. Re: Backspacing on a BrailleConnect with Voiceover
Hi Thuy, I appreciate the suggestion, but it's not working on my model. That's the keystroke to delete on the IPhone, but it does something else on the Mac: It's assigned to go to the dock, and there's no way to reassign it to delete that I can see. D1+d2 is assigned to read from the beginning. Any other thoughts? Thanks, Jessie On Jun 9, 2:43 am, Thuy wrote: > Hi Jessie. Re: iMac late 2009 memory upgrade
Hi Vince, I don't know the iMac layout, but Apple's support pages gives full information on how to perform memory upgrades and disk installations (on computer and laptop models where this is relatively easy to access). Go to the Knowledge Base Article on "iMac: How to remove or install memory": http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423 You'll have to read the linked portions specific to your model (e.g, "iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009)" or other size 2009 models that they list). This will tell you what you need to remove once you unscrew the door, and whether there are tabs to pull out before going to the next stage. For information purposes, all these documents at available in multiple languages (use item chooser menu to pick the one you want). Also, the Apple Support page for your product will have links to "How to" documents, so I did a Google search of the Apple Support pages for your (Intel) iMac and found: http://www.apple.com/support/imac/intel/ Then I found and went to the link for "Remove or install memory" on that page to get to the Knowledge Base article I posted above. The same search method can be applied to other Apple products to find this kind of information. If, for some reason, you can't find or navigate the Apple product support pages, the Macrumors guides pages give a lot of information and links, and you can Google search for those instead. They typically have both buying guides that describe/compare products and features, and track when they are released, and hardware information guides that help you understand machine configuration. However, you'll get the most detailed information for items such as upgrading memory from the Apple Support site. HTH. Thanks, but I did that and it says to remove screws - not how many for my model. Most 27 inch seem to have two screws which Idid loosen, but there seems to be something else there which is not described. It might be in a diagram, but not described in words. Re: iMac late 2009 memory upgrade
Hi Vince, Just after the step about removing the screws, the instructions on the Apple Knowledge Base article page say: "Untuck the tab in the memory compartment. If you are replacing a memory module, gently pull the tab to eject any installed memory module." Did you try to feel around for any tabs along the base of the compartment and pull them out? I'd guess from previous memory setups that you're up against the actual modules, which you have to pull out by finding the tabs tucked below them. Try to locate the tabs and then try pulling them out. Just guessing from the instruction list description. Re: iMac late 2009 memory upgrade
Ester, I'm not even at that step. It's the compartment door I'm referring to. It is sticking in the center and I can't seem to get it loosened up. In the center there seems to be a very small item loosely moving in and out when I move my fingers over the area, but can't figure if it's something which requires a pen or paperclip to press it in. It's definitely not another screw. Re: iMac late 2009 memory upgrade
Hi Vince, According to the iFixit site for the 27" iMac 2009 model, there are 3 screws to the compartment door, and you use a Phillips #1 size screwdriver to open it. I'll paste in the text of their instructions and then give you the link to the page: Step 1 — Access Door Loosen the three Phillips screws securing the access door to the bottom edge of your iMac. These screws will remain captive in the access door. Remove the access door from your iMac. During reassembly, fasten the access door loosely and align it with the pocket cut into the outer case of the iMac before fully tightening the screws. Step 2 — RAM Use your fingers or the tip of a spudger to slide the black plastic RAM tray pull tab out of the RAM slot. Step 3 Pull the black plastic tab away from the iMac to eject the RAM chip from its socket. Use your fingers to slide the RAM chip(s) out of its socket. If necessary, repeat this process for the other RAM chip(s). The "spudger", by the way, is just a thin stick with a pointed tip that is electro-statically protected. You don't need it, but you can use the end to help tease out components. Source: "Installing iMac Intel 27" RAM - iFixit" http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iMac-Intel-27-Inch-RAM/1630/1 The iFixit folks are the people who do teardowns of new products. They typically give instructions for accessing components that are difficult for most people to get to, so I figured they would also cover the easier to access components with a set of instructions, and did a Google Search. HTH. I don't know why you can't get at the that third screw, though. Cheers, Esther On Jun 10, 2011, at 09:52, Vince Mistretta wrote: > Ester, > > I'm not even at that step. Re: Not getting all responses to my EMail messages
Chris, I sometimes find that a few of the Google Groups posts come in either multiple times or else oddly delayed. This means that I may see a list post with a response to someone else's reply to my post before I see the initial reply. Usually, I'll see the earlier post show up eventually. From what I've read, both of these glitches occasionally happens with Google Groups lists and Google accounts for unknown reasons, and can affect different groups of people when it occurs. This doesn't happen very frequently to me, but it does sometimes happen for my mail. It's only associated with the Google Groups lists. While I don't have an idea of why this happens, I do have a solution for a possible workaround: check the Mail Archive sites for both the macvisionaries list and the ptaccess list. Fortunately for you, both these lists are archived there: • Pro Tools Access list at Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/ptaccess%40googlegroups.com/ • Macvisionaries list at Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/ The default access view is organized by thread, so you can just find the topic and navigate down the thread by pressing Control+n to read the next post in the thread and Control+p to read the previous post. If you want to view the list of messages as a series of time-ordered items, press Control+i and you'll see all the posts, latest post first, If you read the first post and want to read earlier posts, press Control+b to go back (and Control+f to move forward). I think the itemized list is limited to the most recent 3000 posts. To switch back to a display of posts by threaded Contents, press Control+c. This is very handy (quite apart from the superior archive search capabilities of the Mail Archive site). If you want to access the macvisionaries list site at the Mail Archives through a webloc file -- a file that opens your browser at the specified web site location when you open it -- I put a macvisionaries.webloc file in the page of downloadable files for this group. Go to the main page of the Macvisionaries Google Groups site given at the end of this email: http://groups.google.com/group/macvisionaries?hl=en You may have to log in with your Gmail account password to access the File pages. On the main Google Groups page there will be a link for "Download Files". If you download the linked file, you'll get something called "macvisionaries-files.zip". If it doesn't automatically open, use the context menu (VO-Shift-M) and choose the "open with" option and select "Archive Utility". You should then have a small (33 KB) folder named "macvisionaries" containing 4 items: an RTF file on suggested corrections for the (Greek) Dmitri voice, a macvisionaries logo image file, and two webloc files named "macvisionaries.webloc" and "discuss archives.webloc". The last two files are web location files pointing to the current an older (pre-February 2009) macvisionaries list searchable archives at the Mail Archive site. You can use them as a pattern for creating another webloc file for the ptaccess list. Just copy one of these files and rename it to something like "ptaccess.webloc" (or other name of your choosing ending in ".webloc"). Then, go in and edit the file with TextEdit and replace the URL in the file with the URL of new location you want to access. By default, webloc files open in Finder, and Finder causes the file to open as a website in your default browser (usually Safari), so you need to change the default application used to open the file. I recall that, at least in Leopard, as long as the file had a webloc extension, even opening in TextEdit made you view this as a web page. This doesn't seem true for me in Snow Leopard, and I don't think that I changed the TextEdit preferences, but if you have problems editing the file, just rename it to being a ".txt" file instead of a ".webloc" file before your open with TextEdit. The webloc file has a very simple structure, so once you've opened the file in TextEdit just use "Command+F" to find the string "html", and then substitute your new html address for the one that is in the file. The new line should look like an html address surrounded by a "" delimiter at the start and followed by "" delimiter at the end. Apparently, due to changes at Google Groups, the uploaded files for each group will only be available until the end of August, and only as a zipped folder of all current files. You can use these files as a pattern for any web sites that you want to visit. I sent a few list members webloc files for the Audible.com site, for example. The main difference with bookmarks is that you can send webloc files as attachments. You can also put them on your Desktop or into your dock, and when you open them, you open a page to that site in your browser. These are the kinds of files that get created when sighted users "drag the current web page" in their br

mp3 catalogging
Alright guys. Since I got my eyepal there is only one task for which I absolutely must have windows. That is keeping a distributable catalog of my mp3 collection. I need a mac equivalent of the program MPEG audio collection found here. http://mac.sourceforge.net It needs to show mp3s in a file browser interface, database the metadata, and generate .txt files which I can customize according to the information I need. It also needs to support flac files which are a huge part of my collection. I would also prefer it if the program would embed the included txt and nfo files for each set. I've been living without that for a long time and could continue to do so. Any suggestions? Re: Visual input concerning screen brightness.
Hi John and Tom, Are you sure that you're using the appropriate keyboard shortcut? On my Macbook Pro, where I have checked the box for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" on the "Keyboard" tab of the "Keyboard" menu under "System Preferences", using the Fn+F1 key to lower the display to where it says keyboard brightness is "0 per cent" has the same effect as turning my screen curtain on, according to other users. This also checks out if I try to use the iPhone "Light Detector" app; I get no sound when the iPhone is pointed to my laptop screen when the display brightness reported by VoiceOver is "0 per cent" -- same as with my screen curtain turned on. As soon as I start to raise my screen brightness with Fn+F2 the "Light Detector" app on the iPhone picks it up. Of course, if I don't press the Fn key along with the F1 or F2 key, nothing happens to the brightness adjustment with the above settings. Are you using external displays like with an iMac? Also, what setting do you use when you check your "Displays" menu under System Preferences? Under the Display tab is the box for "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes" checked or unchecked? When you interact with the slider and push it all the way down to 0 does your screen go dark? Cheers, Esther On Jun 10, 2011, at 15:40, John Sanfilippo wrote: > Wow! Re: Visual input concerning screen brightness.
Hi Esther, This had me scratching my head as well. I think this might be do to the computers we are using. I believe you and I are using macbooks, and the ones who are having the this behavior seem to be using iMacs. On the macbooks, turning screen brightness down to 0% effectively turns off the screen. Even with screen curtain on, the screen is still technically bright. The screen curtain just basically puts a black vale over the screen. But it looks like the iMacs screen works similar to the iOS devices. lowering screen brightness to 0% just turns off the backlight, not disable the screen like on the macbooks. hi, I don't think it reverting to the track before you cut out some parts. I think its joining all the regions and chilling in the blank spots. Re: Visual input concerning screen brightness.
Hi Dan and Others, I've never checked display brightness with an iMac screen. On all the Mac laptop screens I've used, setting screen brightness to 0 seems to have the same effect as turning on the screen curtain. That's why I asked whether this was an iMac and what the display settings were in terms of automatic adjustment under System Preferences. I'd be really surprised if a laptop user said the screen stayed bright a 0 level display brightness setting. Re: Visual input concerning screen brightness.
Hi there Esther,, I have an I Mac with a normal Apple wireless keyboard. Whether I'm in the Display control panel and turn the brightness to zero, or move up and down the brightness scale with F14 and F15, nothing seems to happen. The screen curtain works fine turning my screen totally dark. There is no sensor on the I Mac so, I assume, there is no automatic brightness selection option. Any ideas? I got a sound, as if this is not allowed. 3, As I moved around, using only arrows, I could hear nothing at all. I've tried interacting with the text to no avail. I'm stumped. Re: Visual input concerning screen brightness.
Hi Dan, Tom, Ricardo, and Others, OK, here's the results about iMac screen brightness for all the inquiring minds that want to know. Apparently, the level of screen brightness is, indeed, characteristic of the iMac backlight, and not a property of Macbooks. I did some Google searching, and the first item I turned up was a program to dim Mac monitors. There are apparently a bunch of these, but here's the first one I found, which is a free program named "Brightness Control" with the subtitle "Dim your monitor easily": http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/10429/brightness-control That's the macupdate page for the program, and what's interesting is that there are other, similar programs to dim iMac monitors. However, one of the comments claims that although the program dims the pixels on the screen, it doesn't turn off the backlight, so the amount of energy being used is the same -- as though you had the screen curtain on. Also, apparently the color balance gets thrown off when the program is run. This still might be useful to Tom. The other interesting page was from a page by "Midwestern Mac, LLC", and it's a blog post titled "How to Save 20 Watts while Running an iMac (or another Mac)": http://www.midwesternmac.com/tutorial/2009-05-21/how-save-20-watts-while-running-imac You can read it with Safari reader (Command-Shift-R on the page to read the article text without distracting links). The quick summary is that the blogger tested his 2008 iMac connected to a UPS that also monitored the power usage of connected devices. Even with the display set to lowest brightness, the computer used about the same amount of power as a 77 watt light bulb. Turning the screen of the iMac off dropped that to 30 watts, and putting the computer to sleep took that down to 4 watts. But because the backlight on the monitor was always on, as long as the screen was turned on, it continued to use a good deal of power. My guess is that they can't afford to sustain that kind of power consumption on laptops because they're often run on battery power. Anyway, here's an excerpted quote from the blog article giving the stats. You can read more details about the experiment using the link that I gave above: Detailed stats, for those so inclined: • Computer on, running a bunch of processes, full brightness = 125 Watts • Computer on, highest brightness = 100 Watts • Computer on, lowest brightness = 77 Watts • Screen turned off (press Shift + Control + Eject) = 30 Watts • Computer sleeping = 4 Watts average • Computer off = 0 Watts Very interesting, since it explains that all these iMac monitors don't really get down to 0 light level when you decrease brightness. It also means that even if you dim the screen pixels even further, by using a program like the one I mentioned at the start of this post, you're still using power that will show up in your electricity bill. Hello, After looking on the internet, I found a plugin for openoffice to convert all kind of files with openoffice. it's called: jodconvertor and is a java file with the extension jar. The package has also a jss file and perhaps some more. I don't know how to install. If I simply open the file, I receive the message that the file couldn't be opened. Any help or questions are very welcome, best regards, William Windels -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Oops, my brain went away during my last post. The command you really want is control-option-return, more commonly known as VO-return. re: app suggestions?
hello, Other than AIM, I have not seen accessible apps that will integrate Facebook and Twitter together. There is certainly a Mac version of AIM. To download, go to www.aim.com and click the "downloads" link. Make sure you download "AIM for Mac". HTH, Ezzie - Original Message - From: Kliph&Sharrie OKay, I've seen a bunch of threads suggesting various facebook and twitter apps, along with IM apps. Is there something that is accessible that intergrates all of them? And is there a mac version of Aim, that was a big one for me on windows, since I was able to bring twitter and fb together at the same time. Thanks. sever/network issues
Hi guys: I've recently had my internet go crazy. I can't get VO to go to the status menu. Vo-MM only stops at the Apple menu. CTL-F8 says, "system UI server." And during Apple training today, Melissa noticed that my cursor tracking was intermittently getting separated. I think I'm connected now, as Ive got 33 new messages here. But, it may be to the network next door. Any help in understanding any of this would be very much appreciated. Don't think I can sleep with my Mac out of sourest. (I know, that's weird. Isn't it?:) TIA for any help. Carolyn -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Visual input concerning screen brightness.
Hello Esther and list, Thanks for shedding a little more or less light on this subject! Grinnn! Actually, all joking aside, this information really is interesting. Over several years and on a number of lists, the thing about controlling screen brightness and things like the screen curtain have come up again and again. My final comment is this. It really would be nice if Apple provided a method for directly shutting off the back lighting on the desktop computers or substantially reducing it below what is currently possible. Perhaps there might be some hidden way to further manage these kinds of settings through OS X 7's terminal. A while back, I was searching for some way to do something like this through terminal, but I didn't find anything..
