Which Version Of Windows7 To Install.
Hello and sorry if anybody regards my message as off topic but I love using windows on a mac more than on a pc. I have the macbook white 13inch since February 2009 and I upgraded its memory to 4GB which is the max and is running Snow Leopard on it. I bought yesterday an iMAC MC508 as well which came with Apple wireless keyboard and Apple wireless mouse. I was told to power the keyboard and mouse and the iMAC is going to find them by itself is that correct? I am asking that because I don't have a wired Apple keyboard to initiate command+F5. Now I am planning to install Windows7 and I think will choose the ultimate, I will use bootcamp sure but wonder do I install 32 or 64 bits? Do I need sighted help to install Windows7? My question about 32 or 64bits is important for me because I use Braille often, thanks. -- Georges Zeinoun Timmerv. 6A, SE54163 SKÖVDE Tel: +46500201623, +46500482929 Mobile: +46707567315 E-mail: humorlessg...@samobile.net Email services provided by the System Access Mobile Network. Re: Voice Over and Pages
Hello Sonnia, What kind of document did you open in Pages? I always select the blank document. After interacting with Page 1, you should be able to find more elements with which to interact. Have you listened to the VoiceOver On podcast about Pages and Keynote? It might make things clearer. Cheers, Anne On 1 Jun 2011, at 10:20, Sonnia wrote: > Hi Zack! hoverCam T5V not being recognized
Hi All, I just purchased the HoverCam to use with DocuScan Plus on the Mac. According to the documentation, To varify that it was properly connected, I opened Image Capture, but I received the message that there was no camera nor scanner connected. On the advice of an acquaintance, I checked in system profile, under USB, and the camera was listed. On the advice of another friend, I repaired permissions, but that didn't help. I know that the camera is fine because I tested it on a PC running Windows 7 & it was recognized immediately and worked with DocuScan Plus. According to the DocuScan Plus Documentation, no software needs to be installed in order for the camera to work with the Mac. I have seen a couple of messages from others on this list who purchased the camera and I was wondering if any of you have gotten it to work with the Mac. Hi, It actually won't show up in the image capture utility, but it should still show in Docuscan Plus when you open it and select a scanning mode. If you go into new document, then simple scan (for instance, could as easily be batch scan), do you get a list of available devices? Hi Myrna, When you run Docuscan, does it give you the Hovercam as an option? There is some software which you can download from the Hovercam website for the Mac. RE: Which Version Of Windows7 To Install.
Hello, Given that you have a MacBook with 4GB of Ram, I recommend that you install Windows 7 32-bit. The simple answer is "no", you will not be able to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp without sighted assistance. While some may recommend using Fusion as an alternative to Boot Camp so as to allow you to install Windows autonomously, Fusion does introduce several challenges that you may not wish to encounter. While I use both Fusion and Boot Camp, generally speaking, unless one has a specific need, on a 4GB MacBook, I recommend the Boot Camp method. Re: [Bulk] Insertion point
Here's something that might prove a big help to you. Where-as in windows, the curser is directly beneath each character you right, on the Mac, the curser is immediately to the right of each character you type. think, if you will, of the old electric typewriter. On an electric typewriter, as you will recall, the typing ball causes a letter to be typed and then moves over to the right to type the next character. Well, the Mac curser's behavior is rather more like that old typing ball than a windows curser. if, for example, you type the word "apple" as soon as you type the letter a, the Mac curser will be found just to the right of that letter a. This will allow you to type the p, just like the old typewriter ball. What you are seeing is not a characteristic of Voiceover, rather, it's a fundamental difference in how the Mac handles curser movement for everyone. So, to get back to the "apple" example, let's say you put in too many p's. How to get rid of the third p? IF you use command+left, this should put you back at the beginning of the line; and, assuming you've typed the word "apple" at the beginning of this line, the word also. IF the word is in the middle of the line, just use VO+left or right till you locate the beginning of the word. Now, move the curser right letter by letter. IF, IF you have the curser moving to the right and you hear, "space", followed by "a", that tells you that the curser is now just to the right of the letter a and is in place to either delete that A or type another letter to the right of that a. So, now, you want to find that extra p in apple. Just press the right arrow till you hear that third p spoken. Now, press the delete or backspace key. Here's what you just did. When you moved to the right of that second p, you heard the third p and were then to the right of it. Now, when you backspaced over that third p, you caused the curser to behave just like the self-correcting key on an electric typewriter. The curser deleted that third p and then moved in to it's position so that now, the curser is just to the left of the l and to the right of the second p in the word apple. HTH. Re: Which Version Of Windows7 To Install.
Hi Mark, May I ask what challenges you refer to? I'm curious about this point, as a fusion user on a 4 GB MacBook Pro. I've occasionally been interested in Bootcamp, but was always put off by the lack of a fully accessible installation procedure. FUsion has served me very well, and I view it as more convenient than Bootcamp would be in any case. It'd be nice to hear your perspective. Best, Zack. On Jun 1, 2011, at 1:00 PM, M. Re: App Store Questions
Hi Ezzie! I suggested that apps that were vo friendly were marked somehow [like say :VO: ] but someone said it is not Apples job to do this! And I suppose it would be hard to get all devs to take this on! As for your fields question I would look through all of them and make sure you've filled those that have a star or whatever Apple use for required fields! Re: App Store Questions
Hi ezzy: I must say the accessibility question is a common one. Best thing to do is check with people you what they use, or go to sites like Macfortheblind.com, Applevis.com or accessibility.net, to name a few. You can also go to the Macvisionaries archives and see if an app you want is mentioned there. As to your form comng back at you: I can only suggest you either find someone sighted to have a quick look, or contact Apple directly via phone for more help with submitting it. Hope this helps a little. Take care Carolyn On Jun 1, 2011, at 1:11 PM, Ezzie Buenito wrote: > Hello Listers, > > How exactly can one tell whether apps are accessible with VO? Hi David: Welcom to Mac!:) I actually haven't run across this question a lot. But, I struggled with the same issue when starting out with the Mac. Now, when I go back to that other system, I'm all thumbs when I have to edit anything. (and I don't mean the thumbs that can text well either.:) I liked Ray's annalogy. I'd suggest spending a little time with the text edit app just writing and working with your delete/backspace key to make it more familiar to you. This will make more sense in time. It's just a re-learning process.:) One thing that you might find useful is that you can delete to the right of the cursor by using your FN-key with the delete/backspace to do a forward delete. hth On Jun 1, 2011, at 2:22 PM, David Eagle wrote: > Hello, > I'm sure this has been asked on this list loads of times but I must > ask, since I can't find the answer in Google. Re: hoverCam T5V not being recognized
Hi Buddy and All, Buddy, your instructions did work. The Hovercam did show up in the device list in the DocuScan Plus window. I hadn't looked until I read your message because I figured that if the camera didn't show up in the Image Capture app, as the documentation stated that it should, I should stop there and not become more frustrated. But, now I am up and running. As for Chris' message about getting the blank page message, I was also getting that until I decided that although I was trying this during daytime, perhaps there wasn't enough light. So, I turned on the light on the camera and that solved the problem. So, try that, or use a light source in your room and see if that helps. pondering switching to a macbook pro from windows XP
Hello, I currently have a toshiba laptop running XP but its about 6 to 6.5 years old or so. I can tell soon I need to make a change either to windows 7 or Mac. It recently had a major crash and had to be revived and is now a bit sluggish. I have been a windows user since windows 95 or 98 and am using jaws. I have also used K1000 and an opticbook 3600 scanner. What advice do you have as I switch and what spec recommendations. I was thinking a Macbook pro? Will I need to keep jaws and run it with fusion or boot camp or can I do what I need only on the Mac? if I did run windows 7 and learned it would I still need jaws for the screen reader? What applications are recommended for doing the below task? I have been listening to pod cast like Tech doctor, mac-cessibility and others trying to learn. I multi task a lot and use MS office with word, eccel and outlook. I want to be able to work with mp3 files, word processing, making forms in a word processor or in a spreadsheet, manage files, download files, read pdf files, email, navegate the web, listen to podcast, create flyers for my work, research on the net, manage files and add to my victor stream, manage audible files, add files to a mp3 player, work with my IPhone 4, Itunes, add bookshare daisey books to my victor stream, work with music, learn to make presentations, work with jpg files and photos to rename and label and so on I am a massage therapist and made my own intake form in word and keep records on my computer. I also use eccell for record keeping, budgeting, and tracking income and expenses... I use to use a schedule I created in eccel but now since having an IPhone 4 use outlook for my contacts and calendar. I use eudora paid version for email. Will I still need jaws to do any of the above or could I sell it to help me finance a new Macbook pro? Will I still use K1000 in windows 7 along side mac's OS? I have a Kindle and also use audible and am not volunteering as much on bookshare lately. Re: pondering switching to a macbook pro from windows XP
Wow Laura!!! Got a lot on your plate don't yuh? Well, rest easy. With the Mac, (I'd say Mac book pro with 500GB 72000 RPM drive and at least 4 GB Ram. The K 1000 will not work directly on the Mac; but, you can install windows and use it with JAWS on the Mac. Sounds like you'll be needing to learn Numbers also. Numbers is the Mac spred sheet program. I don't believe you can use MS Word on the Mac; but, Text editor should do the job. Now, let's talk mp3's just a second. No problem at all. I use my Mac book pro for updating my Stream too. I download and otherwise handle NLS books using my Mac also. Talk about crash recovery. IF you crash, it's no problem at all to recover from one. guess what else, if you need to do an OS reinstall, you can. That's right, you can do it yourself. This, mind you, with total accessibility. I've had to do it before myself. Time machine beats all heck out of windows's System Resore. One of the way cool aspects of Time Machine is the fact that if you've got the need for a file you emptied out of your trash two days ago, believe it or not, you can actually get it back manually from your time Machine backup disk. Renaming files? Not to worry. When you focus on a file, just press the return key, (enter in windows) and you are in the edit box where you can type the new file name. do so and just press enter again. How to open a file? Just use command+o. Else wise, command+down arrow will do. I aint used windows since November 2009. Do I regret it? Nope. HTH a little. Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!! RE: Which Version Of Windows7 To Install.
Hello Zachary, Let me say that I am a Jaws user so my experience with fusion is based on Jaws and not other very popular screen readers for Windows. The primary reason that I recommend Boot Camp to Fusion is because of the skill level that is required for one to efficiently navigate between the Mac OS via VoiceOver and Windows 7 via Jaws. Ad to this the fact that, unless one has a standard Windows keyboard (not commonly used with notebook computers), the Jaws Key along with others, in some cases, must be re-mapped. For many, this requires installing a third-party Windows application that requires even more knowledge. Now I know that there are many who will disagree with my conclusion but I can only judge based on my experience in training beginner-level VoiceOver/Windows 7/Jaws users. If one is an intermediate Jaws user with thorough knowledge of how advanced key-mapping is done and if one has a comprehensive understanding of how Windows 7 works coupled with a more than basic understanding of VM Ware Fusion in terms of what it does and how it does it coupled with a comfortable VoiceOver/Mac OSX framework, then I see no problem recommending Fusion. However, it has been my experience that most often, new Mac users who have a very basic understanding of Jaws attempt to use Fusion thinking it is magic. It is not, by any means, magic. One scenario I encounter again and again is one in which someone sets up Fusion on a Mac for a new Mac user. The trainer provides the general step on how to access Windows from the Mac. All appears well until the newbie forgets to turn off VoiceOver or something in Windows requires attention that is not easily accessed or the newbie forgets to shut down Windows in the virtual machine, properly. Generally, I recommend methods that, although not the coolest, will get someone up and running with confidence in the most stable and consistent environment. RE: pondering switching to a macbook pro from windows XP
Hello Laura, In short, I think your question is too broad to be answered in one email with any degree of authority. I say this because, like most things in life, there is no silver bullet, no one-size-fits-all. Having said this please consider the following before you make your decision: 1. Find someone who is impartial with regard to Windows/PCs and Macs. Trust me, this is important because most often Mac people will do their best to tell you how bad Windows is and Windows people will do their best to tell you how limited Macs are. Neither group is right or wrong. You need to develop a relationship with someone who has your best interest at heart and not her/his own ego. For example, I am often asked to recommend computers and I find that I recommend both Mac and PC equally as often. Further, even though people love sending emails, I find it best to have an actual conversation via telephone when consulting. There are so many factors that must be taken into account when deciding how to proceed many of which cannot be denoted in written correspondence. For example, were you and I to talk, part of my recommendation would be based not only on what words you chose to answer the questions but the manner in which you speak when giving the answers. Does this make sense? 2. Don't think of your upcoming computer crossroad as a switch but rather as an opportunity to add more tools to your proverbial toolkit. 3. Money will always be a factor so don't let anyone tell you to ignore this factor. 4. Whatever you do, do not ask a sales person for advice on what to purchase. 5. Finally, whatever you decide, remember to have fun and enjoy the experience of learning something new, OK? Re: iMac mc508
This is awesome. Incidentally, I bought two Apple wireless keyboards at the same shop same day just before buying this iMac to be used with our iPads here at home. The seller told me the keyboard inside the iMac is just the same as the ones I bought, here I wonder how do they pair a particular device before installation? What happens if I used one of the other keyboards? Just wondering. Original message: George, The iMac will come automatically paired with the Bluetooth devices that came with it. Thus, you don't require the USB keyboard or anything other than what comes in the box to set it up. Thanks. On 2011-05-31, at 9:42 PM, Georges Zaynoun wrote: Hi folks!
