Re: Selecting all messages from sender or on subject in Mac Mail
Kevin, I tend to go to the toolbar and interact with it and therein there is a search box. I put the name of the sender or any info I wish and the application displays only the relevant messages in a table. Next to the search box, as soon as you hit enter, yoou will get the number of displayed items. Then stop interacting with the toolbar and vo+arrow right, you will see on the way that there are various criteria you can also ccheck or uncheck. Then you wil, find the table witth which you interact in the usual way. You can go up and down the information to confirm that you have just the messages you wanted and then hit command+a to highlight the whole llot. Then you can perform various actions on the messages, for example from contextual menu. Hope this helps. Re: preview questions
Hi Cheng Ann, Let me separate this question and address this in the context of your earlier query in a separate thread, which was about reading mail attachments and using Preview vs. Quicklook. First, if you are having difficulty reading beyond the first page in Preview, you should first check how you have set Preview to display pages -- whether the PDF Display mode under the View menu on your menu bar is set to "Single Page" or "Single Page Continuous". (Control+F2 or VO-M to move to the menu bar, press "v" to move to "View", then arrow down to "PDF Display" and check the sub-menu to find your display mode.) If your "PDF Display" is set to "Single Page", VoiceOver will stop reading at the end of the first page, and you'll have to page down to advance in a multi-page PDF document (I use Fn+Down Arrow on a MacBook). If it is set to "Single Page Continuous", then provided you have interacted before issuing your VO-A "read all" command, as Robert explained. There are also other options such as for going to specific pages and associated keyboard shortcuts in the "Go" menu as he mentioned (e.g. Command-Option-G). Secondly, your original question was about reading a PDF document attachment in mail. Normally, if I'm sent a multi-page PDF document as a mail attachment that I know I want to keep, my first step will be to save that file in some permanent folder on disk, then open it in Preview from that location. Quick Look is meant for just that purpose -- to give you a quick peak into a document or audio file's contents. It runs only when this it is in foreground -- so if you switch apps to answer a Skype call or move to another task it is automatically paused until it is switched back as the app in focus. It's a low overhead way to view contents of files, since you don't really open the file in an application when you Quick Look it. But that also means that you can't modify your navigation within the file (e.g., go back to the beginning, or skip ahead) or edit tags (in music files). In mail you can similarly use Quick Look to examine attachments to decide how to handle them -- either by reading entire short attachments or viewing enough to decide how to dispose of the these. The default button actions beside the attachments are "Quick Look" or "Save". And as Robert noted, your question is separate from the issue in Denise's original post. HTH. General questions on mac mini
Hi I am a blind person new to the Apple world, I am considering getting a mac mini. I've raid someware that the biggest disadvantage of a mac is that it gets out of date quikly, e.g. if I buy a 2010 mac mini with OS snow leopard 10.6, would I be able to install the latest mac OS and other latest software, on my mini in lets say 5 or 6 years? The thing which will make it worth getting a mac is that it would last me longer than a pc without major upgrading and the extra money you pay for it makes it worth it because of the built in voiceover screen reader, where on pc I would have to buy expensive 3rd party software. thanks for any help -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: General questions on mac mini
Hi, In my opinion, Macs don't get out of date quickly. I think what you read was making reference to the intel/power PC Macs. In the mid 2000s, Apple switched processors. So those with the old couldn't upgrade past OSX 10.4. But, I can't See Apple ditching Intel anytime soon. So long as your Mac has the system resources to run the latest OS, you will be ok. Now, you mention a Mac mini? What kind of things will you be looking to do on your Mac? Web browsing, e-mail, using multi media will be fine. More than fine on a Mac mini. But, if your going to want to do something more resource intensive, you might want to just save up the extra $300 or so and get an entry level macbook pro or iMac in my opinion. Re: ipad and mail question again
Hi Denise, Apple and some other developers have written some Apps such as Mail to present things a little differently on the iPad than on the iPhone or iTouch. One of the differences is the use of "popup windows" on the iPad. These popup windows present lists of choices and other information that might not currently be displayed on the screen. They are sort of like menus in the Mac OS or Windows. When you open a popup it covers part of the current screen and blocks access to whatever part of the screen it happens to be covering. To use the Mail App as an example, If I am holding the ipad in landscape mode with home button to the right and the mail app open, I will normally have two columns, the left column containing the list of mailboxes or messages, and the right column containing the body of the currently selected mail message. If I change the orientation of the iPad to portrait with home button at the bottom, I will now have just one column and it contains the body of the current mail message. In portrait mode, if I want to navigate mailboxes or messages I can double-tap the top left button and this will open a popup window over top of part of the current mail message. I can then navigate the list of mailboxes and / or messages in that popup window and when I've found what I want I can double-tap outside of the popup window to close it or, to use Apple's term, "dismiss popup.". This is just one small example of the use of popup windows on the ipad, but hopefully it gives you a better understanding. Regarding the issue of VO telling you a web page is loading, when and where is this happening? If it's within a mail message, my initial thought is that perhaps this would be caused if mail is set to load images automatically. You might try turning off that feature by going to Settings / Mail, Contacts, Calendar / Load Remote Images and toggling it off. Re: itunes question
Hi Denise, Remember that you actually have to import any music you want to play into your iTunes library. So just moving onto your computer or your phone isn't sufficient. Personally, I think it's easier to just re-rip the CDs, but that is a matter of personal preference. As for your folders, if you want the songs in each to be grouped together, then creating a playlist for each folder is probably your best bet. If all you want is for that music to be in your library, then you can just import it and not worry about creating a playlist. Mark, Funny, my husband and I were just asking ourselves this very question the other night. :-) To the best of my knowledge, iBooks is not yet available for the mac. However, depending on the format of the book you wish to read, you may be able to use another third-party program to read your E-books. -- Jenny Wood Phone: (972) 989-3894 Email: kc5...@gmail.com Facebook/Twitter/Skype: kc5gni On Apr 4, 2011, at 8:05 AM, M. Snow Leopard is the name for Mac OS 10.6.X, where X reflects the most recent build (i.e., 10.6.7). Lion is the next version of the Mac OS 10 family of operating systems and will be 10.7. Re: General questions on mac mini
Yes you would be able to upgrade to Lion provided this is an Intel-based Mac. There will be a number of differences and at this point it would be difficult to say what all of those differences will be. Lion is still in development, but will be incredible. Re: accessible preview alternatives
Hi Matt, VoiceOver was designed to let visually impaired users work easily with sighted colleagues, so there's no need to look for an alternative to Preview if you want your sighted peers to follow along with the text you are reading. You don't even need to change your cursor tracking mode under navigation to set "Mouse cursor follows VoiceOver cursor" as Colin suggests, although that's another option. Under VoiceOver Utility (VO-F8) navigate to "Visuals". The first thing I would check is whether you have either your screen curtain turned on, or your display brightness set all the way down to 0 per cent. That would instantly guarantee that your peers could not follow along as you read in Preview, since nothing would be visible on your display. Under the tab for "VoiceOver Cursor" make sure that the box for "Show VoiceOver Cursor" is checked, and you can also increase the size of the cursor by adjusting the slider for the VoiceOver Cursor magnification. Normally, the section of text that you are reading in Preview should be outlined with a black line that updates as you continue to read, and that by itself should be sufficient to allow them to follow along your reading. However, if you really want to make it obvious what you are reading, you can go to the "Caption Panel" tab under "Visuals" and check the box for "Show Caption Panel". You can also interact with the slider for the Caption panel font size to make it larger, or control the number of lines that are displayed in the Caption panel. You'll probably need to experiment with your sighted peers about window placement, font size, etc. if you choose to enable the Caption panel. I don't think the Caption panel is necessary, but what it does is display within a separate window on your screen the current VoiceOver actions -- this is absolutely everything, and includes not only the text that you are reading in Preview, but if you bring up a help menu it will display that and your selections to navigate -- all shown in a dedicated window on the screen and optionally with a large font size. I don't use this, but if you want to show people how you are working with VoiceOver, this will do it. You can also tweak the settings for these "Visuals" options by bringing up the VoiceOver Commands Help menu (VO-H-H) and examining the items under the "Visuals" submenu. I recall that in an early presentation of VoiceOver that was offered as a podcast back in the days of Tiger (the first release with VoiceOver) -- maybe as an Apple Keynote -- there was an explanation that when they studied how people using VoiceOver worked with other users, the VoiceOver users typically navigated much faster, and options like the Caption panel and the outlined section of text were ways to make it easier for sighted coworkers to follow along. Since VoiceOver reads documents regardless of font size, and you may have Preview set to display a whole page on a small display screen, the caption panel might be of some use. (This is because although the region you are reading with VoiceOver is outlined, the fonts might still be too small for your sighted peers to actually read the text in the outlined region on the screen, while the caption panel can be set for really large fonts.) I think that the easiest thing is to experiment with the "View" menu settings in Preview and adjust the display window while your colleagues are present. (VoiceOver can read the text even if the display window cuts off some of it). Then you likely won't need to use the Caption panel, or maybe even can forgo enlarging the VoiceOver cursor. Just check that your display is viewable by your colleagues (bright enough, large enough fonts, etc.) Since they would be using Preview to read documents on a Mac, and since VoiceOver outlines the region of text it is currently reading, it should be possible for them to easily follow along with just a few tweaks. And you can always resort to the caption panel and other features if you need them. HTH. my mac converts mp3 to aiff automatically
Hi all. I receive CD's with .mp3 files on them. I copied them to my Mac with the intent of putting them on either my stream or book port. When I did this, they all became aiff files. Is there something I can do to tell Mac not to do that? It's annoying because I do not think the stream or book port plus will see these files. They are files I access daily. Re: my mac converts mp3 to aiff automatically
Hi Marlaina. You need to go into Itunes Preferences, import settings, and tell it to copy MP3. You'll need to set the sample rate--there are popup things that give you choices. Or you can simply copy the files from the CD and add them. They aren't imported that way into a different format, simply added in their original MP3 format. Itunes does not let you change what sound card you play out of that is connected to that machine currently. You can use an air port express or an apple tv to play itunes to a networked audio output. Voiceover will always use the selected system sound output which can be your firewire device or the internal audio device. You can use your firewire audio device to play sounds from other applications that support this. Most of those are audio production apps like pro tools, audacity and yes even garageband. What software comes with Mac OS?
Hi sorry this is a very dum question but I don't know anything about Mac but want to get myself one. I want to know what software comes standard with lets say snow leopard, as I understand it comes standard with quite a lot. If compared to windows software does it come with email software like outlook, software like MS word and excel, does it come with a PDF reader like adobe reader? I at least know it comes with itunes but that's about it, thing is I'm trying to work out how much money I'll have to spend on software when getting a mac, I basically just want to do simular things as those I currently do on MS office, adobe reader, power dvd and itunes but I'm already using itunes on my pc. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Yes cubase is accessible to an extent, however I have used it very little so far on a mac with voiceover so I cant give you any details. Thing is I don't own a mac, I've used cubase on pc for a long time but lost my eye sight so now I would have to get a mac to continue using it, I have tried it out at one of my friends and the basics looks accessible. I also use sonar at the moment on pc but don't like it very much but this is probibly because I'm use to cubase. I've heard from someone that neuendo which is cubases post production brother, is more accessible than cubase but haven't tryed it, if you get the oppertunity to test one of these please let me know... joseph wrote: > hi bigboy > > i am use sonar on windows for recording my projects. is the version of > cubase you are using accessible on the mac? > > best > On 4 Apr 2011, at 11:27, bigboy529 wrote: > > > Hi I'm a recording engineer and I use Cubase this is professional > > recording and mixing software but it's expensive, for your needs I > > would reccomend looking at GB or logic however I don't know if logic > > is accessible, but GB is and it works great for its price. > > > > Ashley Cox wrote: > >> Looks cool; thanks! i'll give it a go! > >> Ash > >> > >> On 03/04/2011 20:54, carolyn Haas wrote: > >>> Hi Ashley: > >>> I think I got this nifty little app referred to me by Colin. brilliant, but still getting aiff format

Re: What software comes with Mac OS?
Hi: One big selling point with Apple computers is they don't come pre-installed with a whole bunch of junkware. Some of the things that come standard are: Addressbook, calculator, dictionary, dvd player, garage band, iCal, iTunes, iPhoto, mail, preview (for reading pdf and some other things), Safari(for web) etc. You might need to get the iWorks suite, which has the programs pages, (kind of like word), numbers (similar to excel) and keynote (similar to powerpoint). (each of those canbe bought individually if you don't need all of them. If you don't need fancy formatting, text-edit also comes standard, and works nicely. For scanning, you can get two pieces of software that work very well together frond $150-US. You won't and one last fyi: office for Mac is not accessible. Re: What software comes with Mac OS?
There are about 30 applications and utilities that come standard with the Operating System. The best thing to do is go to the Apple Store or Apple.com and look up product information for Snow Leopard. It will give you the list of applications that are bundled with the Operating System. Let me just mention a few: Mail, Safari (the web Browser), Text Edit (word processing) ITunes Address Book (a data base program). It does not come with a spreadsheet program. May I suggest that if there is something you would like to be able to do on the Mac other than what I have listed here or something that you do not see at Apple .com, just tell us what it is and one of us should have an answer. I hope this helps. Sincerely Yours, Robert Nelson -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi Marlaina! OK when you've got that volume open that might be from when you first imported! Re: Voiceover audio output options
Hi, The answer is that the Mac doesn't natively support general redirection of sound from one source to another, which can also connect input/output devices with programs, but you can add this functionality with free add-ons such as Soundflower, which used to be distributed with Rogue Amoeba's products (Audio Hijack Pro, etc.) or be downloadable from their freebies page, as well as elsewhere. There also used to be open source projects like Jack Pilot, and there are dedicated apps that support audio re-routing (among channels, devices, sound cards, and programs). At the lowest level something like Soundflower will let you route your audio to another device, but the original program was written as a simple re-direct (either 2-channels or 16-channels). I'll post a link to an archived post that discusses some of this by summarizing a bit of the discussion from the mac-access list from two and half years ago. "Re: Redirecting Sound from programs" http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/msg48543.html Note that the links given then may not be the ones you want to use now, but it was an excerpt from a fairly extensive discussion on the mac-access list at the time. I haven't seen discussions of similar scope on the macvisionaries list. The mac-access mailing list page is: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/Mailing-Lists.html You might also join and send your questions to the Pro Tools Access list, which would handle the more professional queries: http://groups.google.com/group/ptaccess?hl=en_US HTH. re: What software comes with Mac OS?
Hello, The Mac comes with iTunes as well as Textedit, iChat, Mail, Power DVD, a calculator and a number of other applications. With Textedit, you can save documents as Word documents, so that you can later open them using MS Word or other applications. Mail works well on the Mac. It is easily usable and you will love it. I can't really compare it to Outlook, since I never used it. The Mac will not come with apps such as Excel and Powerpoint. I bought the iWork application, which comes with Numbers (same as Excel), Pages (same as Word), and Keynote (same as Powerpoint). The app will cost you about $75. Re: help with downloads, please
Hi Carolyn, If you bring up the Preferences menu for Safari with Command+comma, and then navigate to the General Tab, then navigate to the Pop-up button and press it (VO-Space), you can chose "Other…". This brings up a dialog window that you can navigate with the same shortcuts that you use in Finder. Specifically, try the shortcut combination Command+Shift+G (for "Go to Folder"), then type into the text box: ~/Downloads that's an initial tilde (the leftmost key under the escape key, shifted -- which is a shortcut for the current user's home directory), followed by a slash, followed by the word "Downloads" (with a capital "D") Then press return, and your default location for saving downloads will be the "Downlloads" folder under your account. I hope this is the location that you want. HTH. Navigating pdfs in IBooks
Hi, folk, I've started creating pdf versions of some of my files, so I can read them in IBooks. I'm fairly sure they aren't optimized for accessibility in this case. Perhaps because of this, I have unpredictable results when turning pages in these files. sometimes I can go from page 22 to page 177 in one fell swoop. This is not very acceptable to me. Is there a way to set the reading preferences so that this doesn't happen? Is there some other way to turn pages than using the standard gestures or Braille equivalent (O chord) to go to the next horizontal page?
