Hi: One big selling point with Apple computers is they don't come pre-installed with a whole bunch of junkware. Some of the things that come standard are: Addressbook, calculator, dictionary, dvd player, garage band, iCal, iTunes, iPhoto, mail, preview (for reading pdf and some other things), Safari(for web) etc. You might need to get the iWorks suite, which has the programs pages, (kind of like word), numbers (similar to excel) and keynote (similar to powerpoint). (each of those canbe bought individually if you don't need all of them. If you don't need fancy formatting, text-edit also comes standard, and works nicely. For scanning, you can get two pieces of software that work very well together frond $150-US. You won't and one last fyi: office for Mac is not accessible. HTH
