Re: Garmin (reviews look pretty bad) was Re: getting started with navigon
I have the app. The first version had muffled audio, but they fixed that. Actually, when it comes to entering addresses and destinations, it's much easier than navigon or TomTom, because you don't have to enter the street and number on different screens. Actually, when you first open the app, you can just type in the address or place you want in the search box and it will usually work. One thing that some people don't like is that the program does not store its maps locally, it's erver based. In the description, it makes this very clear, so I don't know why people give it bad reviews for that. If that's not the kind of app you want, don't buy it, plain and simple. The main issue I have with the garmin app is that it does not provide spoken directions in walk mode, for blind users, that's important. Interestingly, I got an android phone a few weeks ago and have been playing with that, it has built in turn by turn directions for driving and walking, the directions are very good and it's totally free. Re: VMWare Fusion and USB Ports
Thanks for this. The device that I am trying to connect is seen as a keyboard so when you plug it in you get the dialog asking you to configure the keyboard or skip it. In either case, Mac claims the device and it doesn't show-up in the list of USB devices in VMWare. Kind of an odd ball problem to have. If I could have Windows claim the USB ports, this problem would go away. When I would like to connect a USB on the Mac side, I would just shut down the virtual machine. Re: Creating Apple Scripts, wasWord Count
I mis-read your question yesterday. In applescript if you specify an object (document, file, folder, window ) with a number then it uses the "index" of the object which for windows and documents Document 1 is the current document and Document (count of documents) would be the document on the bottom of the pile. This goes for applications too. So you could also say tell the frontmost application or tell application 1 and the currently active application will receive the commands. Re: Emoticons with VO pronunciation
No, I was able to read each character, and I entered it right. There is no other :D symbol or anything. The only thing I can think of, is that it's some sort of weird bug. I can't do <3 for love or heart either. I emailed the Apple people, told them my situation, asked them what was going on. It just bugs the heck outta me when I'm trying to read a Facebook post, and someone's used emoticonswhich is quite frequent with my friends and I. Maybe someone else has a suggestion. password fields being silent in mail
Hi, Ok, another weird question, probably. Mark is attempting to set up the power book and is having problems with getting mail to work. He's having trouble getting his password entered into the password feild. When he tries to interact with it, it's totally silent, and it seems like he's not able to type anything into the feild. Once, vo said nothing when he tried to see if anything was there, the next time, it said 9 characters. Now, we know it won't read the actual characters, since it's a password feild, but what could be the problem? I don't remember having this problem before and don't know how to help. This is a mac power book running leopard. And, for what it's worth, I'm pushing him to get on here himself to ask these questions since he's using the laptop right now and not me-lol! .aif file question?
Hi all, I am about to add some material to my production site and have a file in the .aif format. I feel sure all apple media players can swing this, it is an apple format after all. but what about the windows players? I suppose I could convert it to .wav, not sure how, and frankly would rather not since I prefer to keep it as edited. Thoughts? Yup. Snow leopard has audio feedback when typing in password fields though. The differences between Snow Leopard and Leopard are vast. Especially when it comes to the use of the web. Re: password fields being silent in mail
Hi Caitlin: I've run across this before, and I'm guessing it's a VO bug. It seems to happen on certain websites. I've had luck with using command-f5 to turn VO off and then on again. Sometimes, I've had to just close out of it and approach it anew. help with pairing
Hi guys and ladies:) quick question: I found and borrowed a refreshabraille at the Rehab center. With no software in evidence, I've been recruited to figure out how it works. (nice timing, eh?) Anyhow, I can get it reading, sort of with my mac, using the usb port. When I attempt to pair it with bluetooth, using the mac or iPhone, I get a "pairing unsuccessful message. It isn't asking for any code. So, can anyone steer me in the right direction for paring and getting it to scroll properly. Currrently, it's jumping over blocks of text at a time. Any pointers much appreciated. TIA Carolyn Haas -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Carolyn, There is a random bug that seems to affect pairing certain Braille displays with the Mac and iOS devices. Some folks have had no issues, while others have had limited success. Re: Emoticons with VO pronunciation
Hi Carolyn, Wes, Brett, and Others, I suspect the reason that you can't set up the VO pronunciation editor to speak emoticons for ":D" (colon d form big smile) and "<3" (less 3) is that you could get potential confusion in situations where you are normally typing with colons or in mathematical expressions. Can you imagine a passage where someone is using capital letters as a shortcut or code to refer to the names individuals (as sometimes occurs in books, or where one is reading paragraphs of a diary referring to people by their initials), and because there is no space between the colon and the "d" someone all of a sudden hears "laughing face" or "big smile"? That would really be confusing! Or, for example, someone who is trying to read a math equation comes to the part where an algebraic expression is less than 3, and hears "love" or "heart" in the middle? I'd imagine that the annoyance value of having VoiceOver substitute emoticons under these circumstances would be considerable. Just think of having to explain to your math teacher that you couldn't do your math homework because you've set up your screen reader to pronounce "<3" correctly for emoticons on Facebook. HTH. Re: GPS Apps
Hi Ricardo and Eric, For what it does (and the price) around me is excellent!! The main difference between aroundMe and WhereTo is the number of categories. AroundMe has a total of 18 with a few redundancies such as "bars" and "pubs". If I select the "food and drink" category in "whereTo?" here is the list of subcategories under the letter a: Afgan African all you can eat American Argentinean Armenian Asian Australian and Austrian I'll spare the reader (and my fingers) a trip through the rest of the alphabet or rundown of other business categories, but I can't think of one that isn't covered. As I understand it, the initial release of lookAround listed the five nearest points of interest without regard to user category preference, but perhaps a subsequent release rendered their business search feature more useful? Re: GPS Apps
Hi Geoff. I don't know if you are using Navigon a lot, but I do have problems with it in that if I try and search for an address by putting in all the relevant information, it won't accept the details as sometimes Voice Over won't go into the edit boxes. Have you or anyone else had that problem? I'm still using GEO. I just wish Navigon spoke where you were automatically as you have to do a lot of flicking whereas GEO just tells you where you are which I find very important if I'm travelling independently on the busses. You could use Macs. I may have got the spelling of the name wrong, but it's a brilliant little program for converting file types. I know for sure that Winamp, and VLC will play AIFF's, but not sure about Windows media player... My conversation with Garmin was it did not, but I suspect the person I spoke to did not understand what I was asking and was not willing to check it out. Of course not having an actual route to walk, I suspect a lack of a simulation mode might be the problem in that case. Sorry I can't provide more info. Re: Emoticons with VO pronunciation
Hi Colin: That smiley came with Alex, and Silly as it sounds, it endeared me to him. It's the only one I easily remember, and I know I overuse it.:) Can't help myself. Re: GPS Apps
Hi Kawal: Call me dense. But, I still think there's too much rocket science involved in making Navigon work. I've gotten discouraged with the number of hoops to jump through, just to get directions somewhere. Or, perhaps I'm just too much of a homebody to make it worth my while to work with. I have a secret notion that only wizards and geniuses can really get anywhere using it.:) Carolyn H On Feb 12, 2011, at 4:17 PM, Kawal Gucukoglu wrote: > Hi Geoff. > > I don't know if you are using Navigon a lot, but I do have problems with it > in that if I try and search for an address by putting in all the relevant > information, it won't accept the details as sometimes Voice Over won't go > into the edit boxes.
