I mis-read your question yesterday. In applescript if you specify an object (document, file, folder, window ) with a number then it uses the "index" of the object which for windows and documents Document 1 is the current document and Document (count of documents) would be the document on the bottom of the pile. This goes for applications too.
So you could also say tell the frontmost application or tell application 1 and the currently active application will receive the commands.
