Re: Here is what I have done with garageband
Hi, I'm sure the song is impressing, but i can't get it to play on the Mac no matter what i do. My Mac suffers from SRS, (Screen Reader Syndrom), which is a disease that shows in that the screen reader, voiceover in this case, reports a link, you press the link but nothing happens, the page isn't even loaded, and nothing happens when you click the link and when you right click on the link it opens the wrong menu, because the screen reader doesn't see a link even though it reports a link as being present. This is a common disease amongst screen readers with virtual buffers, but apparently Voiceover can suffer from that as well. I don't know of any remedy for this, so in short, i couldn't hear the song, i'm sorry. /Krister 1 feb 2011 kl. 22.54 skrev Ed Worrell: > > > The other newish song is two worlds it is electronica too...Hello Listers > > I am happy to say that I have finished another new song with Garageband. Re: Accessible games in the Mac App Store
Save the following script to a file then run the script. Remember to chmod 755 the file name first to make it executeable. It will make an ifarchive folder tree on your system the first time you run it and expect it to take a while the first time you run it. Then you run it later and it will synchronize your collection with the archive. You go into the ifarchive/starters/ folder among others and start searching for files with .zx where x is a number and these are the games. You also downloaded several game playing engines to use too, so do a little searching and experimentation and you should at least be able to get the frotz games going on your mac. Cut here. #!/bin/bash rsync -rlptDv --bwlimit=0 --timeout=300 --partial --delete \ ibiblio.org::pub/docs/interactive-fiction/ ~/ifarchive cut here. Unless things have changed since I used a Mac Mini, I would say that you cannot use it without a screen affectively. Hello Yuma. I'm still having issues sharing volumes on my server. Do you know if the problem could be that my volumes are fat32? Re: MacMini Without a Screen
I've accidentally unplugged my monitor while using the Mac Mini and VO got extremely confused, especially in Safari. I really wouldn't recommend it. There used to be a way to plug a dummy cable in, but since the new video connections have become standard, it doesn't seem to work anymore. Braille Sense 32. Display Help.
Hello guys, I have two questions I hope some of you can help me with. (1. How do I reply to a specific question within a message threat, so my feedback can appear under particular questions and/or comments? (2. What is the process of connecting my Braille Sense 32 to my iMac so it can be used as a display. I currently have my device connected via bluetooth, but I am unsure of what to do from here. I have reviewed the archives, but i was not finding sufficient responses. Thanks to anyone who can help with these questions - stay warm across the country. Re: Braille Sense 32. Display Help.
Hi, to connect your braille sense first remove the current paring you have set up. Then switch on your braille sense and turn on terminal for screen readers which is located in the utilities section if memory serves correctly. Press control option f8 to open the voiceover utility. Press the letter B or arrow down to braille. Press control option right arrow until you get to displays tab, then press control option space on it. Tab to the add bluetooth display button and press space. Press enter to initiate the pairing and enter your passcode which I believe is 4 0's on that display. You're done. The sense should come up brailling. Editing in Audacity, can someone help?
Hi, I'm using the accessible version of Audacity for the mac, probably a quite old and possibly obsolete version, i don't know but anyways i'm trying to make the application understand that i want to select only a tiny bit of the audio and not a chunk of several kilometers. The zoom in command doesn't seem to have any effect although it should. I wonder if there's some kind of scrubbing feature or otherwise an audible feature to select things with? No pressing play then pressing whatever keys you press to do a start/end of selection won't cut it, because the piece i want to select is short. Could anyone help with this? /Krister -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: sharing folder on mac os server for mathew
Mac OS doesn't play nice with FAT32 partitions, they need to be at minimum NTFS in order for them to work with mac os systems. However, if you don't see an add share point or volume button in your server admin panel, the issue is altogether different as you should be able to share your system volume but you said your sharing is either greyed out or just isn't there. I had my server on before a few days when my partner plugged it off because the quote unquote white flashy thingy (which is incidentally my external disk) probably takes a lot of energy. So now i have lost remote access to my server not due to viruses or other data centric circumstances but human implication in the most intimate order :) So i can only navigate blindly here. Here's a list of things to check: 1-your server is reachable at yourservername.local 2-DNS is in order for all network related services. If not, go to terminal and type sudo changeip -checkhostname , type your admin password then if there are no error messages you're good to go. 3-Check your volumes and if necessary change them to ntfs or HFS+ journaled. If all these are go, there is no reason you can't see a list of available volumes or share points after you vo right in the sharing tab on either your server or on the afp item in your sever list. Garag Band Question, Possible Screw-Up?
Hi people! First of all, I'm new to this list. So hi all! You've already been a huge help! I've only had my Macbook Pro since November, and this list has already been invaluable - LOL if not to say a life-saver! Anyway, the Garage-Band question. I pasted a loop into my song and stretched it out to the length of the other track so that they should match, but I'm still only hearing it for the first four bars. What am I missing Plus, I seem to have lost the ability to re-size and I'm not sure why. But, when I try to resize my track, loop or window with the arrow-keys, it just dings at me and doesn't seem to be doing anything, regardless of whether VO-keys are locked or not )I lock them to perform the re-size command as that's the only way I can reach all those keys). Anyway, what did I do?? Also, on a side-note, is it possible to permanently lock the VO-keys? This happened to me once before where the keyboard is acting as though the VO-keys are locked even when they're not, and I can't figure out why it's doing that or how to undo it And needless to say it's playing havoc with my navigation and editing! Anyway, thanks in advance, and all help appreciated! . -- "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Re: Forget wireless networks
1. make sure that you have the network panel of system preferences unlocked. ((click the lock to make changes) 2. Select the airport service from the table. 3. Click the Advanced Button. 4. Under the AIrport tab there will be a table of known networks. Select the one you want to remove. 5. There will be a button called Remote Airport Network. Just click this. I suggest using the item chooser to find all the above mentioned buttons and fields as some are hidden in "groups". Olympus DS 40 to Mac Help
Hello all, I have an Olympus DS 40 recorder/player that I use all of the time for recording choir practice sessions and other audio. The Mac software that came with the player does not work with Voice Over, nor can my wife get it to work at all. She downloaded Flip for Mac and I can now play the files using Quick time. However, I can not save them. Also, when I used Quick Time to record the audio output from my player and then saved them to my mac, I cannot open them, and therefore, cannot edit them, in Garage Band. Does anyone out there use and Olympus recorder, and if so. how do you get the files to your mac? The Olympus is great in that it is totally accessible with voice navigation and it's small size and high quality sound make it an awesome player. But, where do I go from here. Thanks for any ideas. Re: Olympus DS 40 to Mac Help
Hello Tom, When you connect the DS40 to your Mac, the device should show up in the finder as a removeable disk. If you open this drive, you will be able to view the various folders on the disk. Your files should be under the recorder folder. Yes the recorder will show up as a drive in the finder. For editing the files, I'd suggest amadeus pro. You can also use amadeus to convert the .wma files to .mp3 quite easily. Re: Garag Band Question, Possible Screw-Up?
Hi, Lets deal with your side note first. To lock the VO keys press VO semi colon. Also check to see if you have quick nav activated. This allows you to navigate and interact with just the arrow keys. You can toggle this on/off by pressing the left and right arrow key at the same time. Now, To the garageband stuff. :). Do you have cycle region on? this is toggled on and off by pressing the letter C. When dealing with looping and stretching regions, I suggest making sure this is off. I have done a few audio tutorials you might want to check out. I think it will show, better than I could explain, how to work with regions. You can find all my garageband tutorials here. http://goo.gl/AKjSa hth Ricardo Walker rwalker...@gmail.com Twitter, Skype, and AIM: rwalker296 Google Voice: 1-646-450-2197 On Feb 2, 2011, at 12:07 PM, Phantom.Vader wrote: > Hi people! > > First of all, I'm new to this list. Hi Erik, I finally got around to trying this out, and I have a few questions. So far I've only been playing around with using the mail app, so my questions pertain to that. 1. I seem to be interacting with things a lot--like the messages table--without actually issuing the command to interact. Have you seen this? Any work around? 2. On a similar note, Quicknav also seems to be being activated without me deliberately activating it. At least, my scroll buttons start behaving as though Quicknav is turned on for no apparent reason. Any thoughts? 3. How do I read email messages? I can see the messages in my message table, but so far have not found a way to actually read a message. I have looked at the Commands in the Commands table, but I'm not finding answers there. thanks for any help. Re: use of djay 3.
Hi, I have about 6000 vinyls myself and countless Cds which were all baught with sweat and tears. I think you misjudge those who do it for play and those who think they need to live on DJing which in itself is pretty accurately not a way of earning unless you produce tracks and beats which themselves are dope. As for mp3s, if i buy tunes on itunes, buy them from such places as bleep, boomcot, alpha pup, stones throw and other online mp3 sales places, i'm definetely not buying some tracks coming out of commercially oriented, play on the radio till you shoot yourself in the head tracks. Its for personal use first and foremost, to play music for oneself, then for a smaller crowd. I'm not speaking for those who lug their crates around nor those with hard drives with extensive material which might or might not have been downloaded their own way. This said, its rather much beyond better to just carry a digital dj set than all the crates, cd pouches and all that stuff when quality is just the same on mp3s and a fraction the weight. As for the license to DJ, it used to be like that back in the days. If you wanted to try some vinyls, either you just baught it or you had a license and showed it to the sales person. It'd be miserable though if everytime someone djayed and they were sent to jail cuz 1 mp3 out of 200 was downloaded from an illegitimate source. Things evolve, and no one has a clear crystal ball over this, but you now usually get rights to do things with other's productions through contact, exchange and such. Don't know what type of muzak you used to spin but would be interested to Best regards, Yuma -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Garag Band Question, Possible Screw-Up?
Hi people! Wow! Thanks for the fast responses! Awesome! Ricardo. :-) Yes, I've listened to your tutorials. They're awesome! Thanks so much for doing them! They were a huge help getting started! LOL otherwise, I don't think I'd have had a clue what any of that stuff meant! I tried re-sizing with the cycling both on and off, though, and it still went all whacko. Could the Quicknav thing have had something to do with it? Because that does sound exactly like what was wrong with my keyboard. And thanks, both of you BTW, for the Quicknav tip. It seems that I did indeed turn it on unintentionally, and now that I've turned it back off things seem to be back to normal. Phew! LOL I'll have to watch that though! I don't even remember accidentally pressing both arrow-keys at the same time, but apparently I did! Anyway, thanks hugely for all the help, and keep it coming! Re: Jailbreaking and some solutions?
facilities cost money. These carriers are spending over a billion per year at an absolute minimum and some like ATT in the tens of billions. Some thing else to remember is Spectrum is easily used up. With the newer technologies like LTE you can fit more in the same frequency spectrum so costs in theory should drop. Think of it like T1 lines used to be. They used to cost $1000+ per month for 1.5 megabits. Now you can get 100 megabits for $179 per month. The facilities have to grow and if you look at like a supply and demand curve as the supply increases the costs drop assuming that supply outstrips demand. Course they don't, they've better things to do and they've done it well, the new product's a damn good one not just for accessibility reasons but performance reasons, works so much better than the older versions did, I've only been using it for a couple of days, the interface changes are taking a little getting used to but I'm finding I like the way things are presented now and things are less cluttered and presented in a more logical order in a lot of cases. Re: first impressions of the new Skype
Speaking as someone who personally visited the Skype development headquarters in Estonia, met many of the developers along with a number of managers that came from the UK to attend those meetings, and who was there at Skype's request to provide information on exactly how to improve accessibility of Skype on both Windows and MacOS platforms, I can somewhat authoritatively assert that Skype does care about accessibility. :) I believe there are two basic problems here, neither of which is carelessness: First, the changes in Skype itself, which are driven not by us but by the sighted world like it or not, sometimes require wholesale rewrites of accessibility support code, which of course takes time. Second, we the blind are, pretty much by definition, more equipped to tell Skype what's wrong with their accessibility support than they are, which means that the likelihood of a Skype change breaking accessibility is pretty high unless we find a way to tell them in a timely fashion what happened. The first of those problems is both inevitable and common to most software out there that we might want to use. The second, though, is a problem we can certainly address individually: Skype has a bug reporting site where any Skype user, blind or sighted, can file bugs. The URL for that site is https://developer.skype.com/jira/ If you have a problem with Skype and you go file a bug explaining in detail what the problem is, your report will reach the Skype development team. Of course, a well-thought-out and detailed bug report like, "In Skype version 5.1.0.104, there is no apparent way to add an incoming call to an existing call to create a conference without using a mouse or typing a lot of keystrokes," is far more likely to cause things to happen than a report like, "I can't add people to a conference." Finally, a confession: For many months, I was in more regular communication with the Skype developers, filing bugs of my own and talking to them about how to fix them - that's my business, assistive technology programming. :) But more recently I have not found as much time to do this, so I have started more directly encouraging other blind people to step up and be heard by Skype directly. Also, since I maintain the JAWS scripts for Skype on Windows, I am more well-versed in the Windows Skype interface than in the Mac Skype interface. So in summary, the best way I know for people to help Skype fix accessibility problems is to let them know that such problems exist by filing specific bugs on their bug reporting site. Fortunately for Mac Skype users, the way to make things accessible on a Mac is more well defined than how to do that on Windows, which means you probably don't have to know how to answer questions about how to program accessibility in order to file a useful report. Re: garage band nitty-gritty little things i keep misunderstanding
I thought I'd try it just for kicks, "remixing" midi files I downloaded off the net. Well, those get querky, some of the tracks can't solo, the organs really stink built into GB as you can barely hear them, and I tried the sound font trick, download a bagpipe.sf2 I threw in, DLS Music Device recognized it, but using that effectively muted the lead guitar I replaced it with. Yeah, I know it would probably sound stupid anyways, especially with the amp simulation stuff on it, but not sure why it wouldn't let me hear it anyways. - Original Message - From: "Chris Snyder" To: Sent: Sunday, January 30, 2011 10:01 AM Subject: Re: garage band nitty-gritty little things i keep misunderstanding I too would be interested in an audio tutorial. Donna On Dec 30, 2010, at 9:38 AM, Ricardo Walker wrote: Hi, I can answer these for you. First you are correct. Regions are segments of audio or midi recorded on a track. To record on to a region you must first turn on the cycle region which can be done by pressing the letter C to toggle it on and off. Then interact with the arrange layout area and navigate to multiple indicators ruler time line and interact again. Now navigate to the cycle region layout iTem. Here you can resize the size of the cycle region, as well as move it a long the timeline. To start moving the region press VO command accent. Now use the left and right arrows to position the region in the timeline. Press escape when done. Now you might want to stretch or shrink the size of the cycle region. This is done by pressing VO command shift accent. You will be given 2 choices. Move the left border or the right border. So for example, If I wanted to add to my verse region on my guitar track and it started on bar 5 and ended at bar 21 I would first move the cycle region to bar 5. Then I would move the right border so the cycle region is 16 bars long. Now I can go to my guitar track, hit record, and play my little heart out. lol. I just combined all your questions into one example. I thought it would be easier. I can create a basic audio tutorial if enough people are interested. I understand a region is a portion of recorded audio on one track. Is this true? Or does it encompass more then one track? If the former theory is correct, is it possible to add onto one region but not on another? For example if you have three regions. An intro, a chorus and a verse region. How can you easily add a second part to the chorus region without affecting the other two? For example add a different instrument or background vocals or so? -Second thing is the so - called cycle recording. I understand this creates a sort of region that lets you basically record ov er an already done piece, possibly adding to it. But how can i see what selection is indicated? I mean, how do i know what part is being cycled? Also people tell me to resize regions using voiceOver resizing commands. I have two questions about that. 1. What are these commands? 2. I understand resizing the cycle region increases the amount of bars it is encompassing, therefore increasing the length thats being cycled. But why would you want to resize another region? Wouldn't you be just adding empty bars? Sorry if these are newbie questions, its just things i never really understood. how to add people to a Skype conversation
For those of us who have been wanting to know just how to add a person to a Skype conversation, I've worked it out. 1. Make the first call. 2. Once the person answers, focus on the conversation by either command+option+left or right. 3. Now, Vocus on the tool bar and from there, VO+right till you hear, "Add people". 4. Press this with VO+space. 5. Now, VO+right till you get to the table of contacts. 6. Now, interact with this table. Note that Voice OVer will not read you this table until you do so. 7. Now, Press VO+command+F5 to rout the mouse to this table. 8. VO+left or right until you reach the contact you wish to add. 9. Now, cease interacting with the table. 10. Now, VO+right until you see, "Add button". Press it. Note that if the add button is grayed out, this is because Skype does not notice that you've made a selection from the contacts table. I still have yet to work out how to remove a person, but, at this point, I imagine it's done by going to the source list and focusing on the contact from that point. HTH. Hi everyone: I'm having a frustrating issue with mail. I prefer to have mail sort my messages by date received. I'm setting this in the view menu. But, the minute I go to another task, even another mailbox, the sorting defaults to by subject. I looked in mail prefs, but found nothing to correspond with that. Re: iWOrk: VoiceOver Falls Short
Hi Kevin, I spent some time listening to your suggested podcast and am a little annoyed with your approach and attitude presented within it. While your comments below suggest a welcomeness to constructive comments and/or workarounds, your tone within the podcast itself is very critical of VO. Much of this criticism, in my opinion, is due to a lack of experience with the product itself. You and your partner appear well versed in the use of JAWS and are using that wealth of experience to attempt a comparison with a product that you do not have the same familiarity with. Therefore, your conclusions seem rather tilted. Now, I do appreciate your efforts in providing the podcast episodes, as such comparisons are useful. Simply to eliminate the judgemental comments would make them more palatable from my prospective. As I've noticed from much of the suggestions supplied by Anne Robertson, much of what you criticized with respect to VO is actually doable. I might also add, that many of these are not necessarily "workarounds", but really just a different way of approaching things. For the most part, we all have to realize that VO and the MacOS is not Windows, nor do I want it to be, so if we must do things a little differently, then so be it. Now for some specifics: • In Numbers, you made fun of Numbers saying "B4" with the word "Cell" and quipped about not needing to hear the word "Cell" since you knew that you were in a spreadsheet. You also mentioned that there was no way that you could stop it from saying the word "Cell". In this case, you are inaccurate, simply set your default verbosity to "Low" and VO will not say the word "Cell" anymore. I will readily admit that JAWS handles MS products very well and I'm not trying to say that VO handles iWork just as well, my objections are with your perceived expertise with VO during the comparison and your over-critical tone. Your obvious comfort level with JAWS allows for the ease of use whereas that same level of comfort is not apparent for VO. These inconsistencies are brought home considerably when I read the comments/suggestions from Anne. Maybe, instead of making such judgements, you could preface your comments with phrases like, "In my experience with VO thus far", or " I haven't figured out how to do whatever yet, but there may be someone who's more familiar than me with it". I feel that this would give your podcast a more professional tone and consequently, add validity to it. In it's current state, I would not be inclined to listen to further episodes. Just my thoughts.
