Re: garage band question

2011-01-09 Thread Matthew Alvernaz
Hi, I have tried this, but voiceover always says either hidden layout item, or
partially hidden. If it says hidden, I can't do anything much with it, and was
just wondering how to get it so its not fully hidden.

Re: a fabulous experience with my MacBook Air

Swiss air is great, all the booz is free, it's high end booz, and they give you
the whole bottle none of this by the glass nonsense.

Made the flight from New York to Geneva a lot more enjoyable. Prices weren't
bad for business class either.

Re: a fabulous experience with my MacBook Air

2011-01-09 Thread Scott Granados
Actually, flying isn't that hard.

Granted I had a skilled pilot looking over my shoulder but I do a lot of the
primary flying work. Especially on modern aircraft with up-to-date avionics
you can do a lot independently. You'd be surprised how many of the devices
have some sort of spoken output. A lot of the time you just sit back and chill
radioing in once in a while, getting a heading speed and duration and fly where
the guy on the ground tels you to.
Real high end aircraft like the A380 or the new 777 coming out do
everything automatically including taxi, take off, landing and parking. The
pilots just observe to make sure things are going well. This is one reason
there hasn't been a major plane crash in the last ten years. More and more
functions are being taking from humans and offloaded to the machines which
greatly improves reliability and safety. You just need someone like Sully
sitting there at the ready in case all goes wrong and you have to land in the
east river.:)

Even on a small business jet like what I use though there are very advanced
features. You only have to steer for the first few hundred feet and actually
fly by hand for the last 1000 or so. It's pretty comfortable.

Re: Problems with Braille displays and iOS devices

2011-01-09 Thread Scott Howell
THanks Andy, I will check that out. I think there is enough evidence now that
Baum needs to address the issue since they are the original developers for the
firmware or at least some portion is a part of the firmware companies such as
APH is using. Well this is at least my impression in any case.

Re: Furious about itunes

2011-01-09 Thread Colin M
Hi there!
I have at the moment over 2000 tracks that are all in invalid locations!
What I had done is in the compilations folder on my hard disc, I is set up new
folders such as disco, 70s, 80s and dance and others!
And after putting a lot of the music in them thats when they stopped being
found by itunes!
There was also some albums that I had changed from compilation to artist [ like
best of mavin gaye] and that also [and others] became invalid location!
I now have a task to put them back!
Just one more thing in my hd itunes folder there is previous itunes libraries I
did not make them but they are there!
Anyway Itunes fun for me as well!
Colin
I'm far too bad for Heaven!

quickly finding loose files in DJ and Microphone issues

2011-01-09 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Hi,

Okay. I'm trying DJ Demo and I'd really love to know the following:

1. How do I quickly find loose files which I know I have but which are not
tagged nearly at all. These are all in my ITunes library.

2. Every time I press shift+m to open the Mic, I find I have to go in to the
Mic window and manually raise the level back to where I want it. Is this
normal? if not, how can I fix it so that shift+m just turns on and off the mic
without my having to go in to the window and adjust the level every single
time. that seems like a time waster to me.

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!

On the boot disk, the Macintosh will de-frag on the fly any file <2MB if it has
more then 8 fragments. There is an excellent article at
http://www.osxbook.com/software/hfsdebug/fragmentation.html
This article discussed 6 month old 10.3 systems and they were 99% fragment
free. HFS+ also has a method for moving the most used files into a hot zone
where they can be accessed faster.

Re: Furious about itunes

2011-01-09 Thread Karen Lewellen

oh goodness!
but I have heard of this happening before.
Granted the person was using itunes on a windows machine, but apparently the
program will if one is not careful with setup, go through your system and
remove things it feels might not be legal copies. Granted, I do not know
how you have set things up, if using windows at all, etc.
One would think itunes would recognize its on stuff but still. No program
should be making decisions about the content of our drive like that.

Student in Detroit Area Looking for Mac/VO training?

2011-01-09 Thread Al Puzzuoli
Hi,
Just wondering what options are out there for those wanting to work with a
trainer to learn the Mac with VO? I know of at least one student in the
detroit area who would be interested . A local person would obviously be
ideal but failing that, someone who could do it via phone might work as
well.

Thanks,

Re: VueScan question

I use Vuescan for mail, and don't' do much scanning beyond that. I suspect it
would work fine for well-printed books or any type of high-contrast typed text,
but would probably choke and epically fail on things with graphics embedded in
them or dot-matrix type, badly printed text. It reads all my bills just fine,
though. :P

WHen using IMAP, by default the Mail application only downloads the message
when you select it.

In the preferences panel under Accounts' Advanced tab there is an item called
Keep copies of messages for offline viewing:

There are options to download Messages and Attachments, Just messages or to

Changing this option should help.

Re: Furious about itunes

2011-01-09 Thread Scott Howell
If you move content outside iTunes, you will encounter this problem because
iTunes has no idea that you have moved the file. You should only move files
from within iTunes. This is because the database does not update itself upon
startup. If it did this you would go nuts waiting since a large library of 8 to
10,000 songs can take some time.

Re: following these directions to speed up apple mail, except I can't get past the first step

2011-01-09 Thread Jon Cohn
Yes, you can set up an apple script to run as an alarm for ical. There is a
runscript option in the alarm pull down menu.

I don't know what would happen if you are not logged in when the Alarm occurs.
And if you are logged in and reading mail right now it would quit you out of
mail, so you might want to
add a Dialog box to the beginning of the script. Also, there is a "Launch"
service which might be better then ical for this type of functionality. I
don't know off hand, if LaunchServices are available to any Macintosh user, or
just the Administrator.

Best wishes,

Jon

Jon

ITunes not properly updating podcasts

2011-01-09 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

I've now had this happen twice. For reasons I can't figure out, ITunes all of
a sudden stops updating my podcasts. The only reason I know this is because I
have one hourly news and one or two daily podcasts that haven't updated in the
last several days. The only way I've found to fix this is to unsubscribe and
resubscribe to all of my podcasts.

Anybody know why this keeps happening?

I'm seriously considering looking into alternatives to ITunes for my podcasts,
seeing as I never sync them with my phone anyway and just listen to them
locally. So, if this problem continues and nobody knows how to fix it, I'm
also open to any alternative podcatchers anyone can suggest.

TIA,

-John

Re: ITunes not properly updating podcasts

2011-01-09 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Note: this post is a bit windows orientated; for some reason I thought
you'd sent this to viphone, but I'm sending it anyway in the hope that
it may help others as well.
John,

I've also had this happen and it's really really annoying. Unlike you,
I like to download / sync my podcasts every morning while I shower so
that there on my iPhone for the rest of the day, so this tends to be a
huge problem.
I've actually given up on using iTunes for podcasts and have switched
over to juice. I'm not sure if it's the best podcatcher out there
these days since I've stuck with it for a few years now or if theres a
mac version come to think of it, but it always seems to do the job.

Heres where things start to get interesting though.

I like things to be as seemless as possible, especially in the
mornings, so I had to figgure out a easy way for the podcasts to be
downloaded via juice and then imported into my iTunes library more or
less automaticly.

So, heres how I have everything set up. You should be able to
duplicate this using apple script but I can't provide any examples I'm
afraid.

1: Juice downloads my podcasts when ever it wants to; this is usually
with in minutes of them being uploaded. They then get saved in the
automaticly add to itunes library folder.
It would be great if iTunes would simply add all of these files to
it's library, but alas, that would be too simple. Itunes only adds
files that are in the root of the automaticly add to itunes folder,
completely disregarding any sub folders. This is a problem since juice
makes a sub folder for each podcast that I'm subscribed to.
2: I wrote a batch script that inspects the automaticly add to itunes
folder and any sub folders that exist with in it. The script grabs all
the mp3's that are in the different sub folders and moves them to the
root of the automaticly add to itunes folder after which, the now
empty sub folders automaticly get deleeted.
This is set to run every morning, just before I get up.

It was a bit of a pain to set up, but it actually works quite well
now. I always get my podcasts and everything is done automaticly.

Hope that helped someone.

Ben.

Mod note -- expressive language.

2011-01-09 Thread Geoff Waaler
Greetings y'all,

Some may be familiar with George Carlon's routine discussing the seven words
you can't say on television (at least here in the US). Recent posts have
prompted us to remind you that this list conforms to those rules.

We have subscribers of all faiths and ages, hence one can not assume that
everyone is comfortable with the use of overly colorful language. As George
points out, there are over 400,000 words in the English language, so it
shouldn't be overly limiting to ask that posters confine themselves to the
399,993 remaining words. Those who can not will need to be limited to read
only access.

Thanks and hope everyone's having a good weekend..
Geoff

Re: ITunes not properly updating podcasts

2011-01-09 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

If a podcast has not been listened to for a period of time, iTunes makes the
decision that you are not keeping up with the podcast so it stops checking for
updates. When this happens, simply use the context menu after highlighting the
podcast and tell iTunes to refresh the podcast.

Re: forgetting wireless networks?

2011-01-09 Thread Jon Cohn
Well, in my personal opinion, your office is doing things wrong. Any Private
WiFi Network in an office environment should not be advertising its ID to the
world, they should instead require that the SSID be entered into those
computers that are authorized to use the NetWork. This probably does not add
significant security to the LAN, but it certainly prevents Apple products from
listing it in their available networks and preventing random people from
attempting to connect to the services.

[aiphone] Verizon to Offer iPhone Users Unlimited Data

2011-01-09 Thread Sarah Alawami
Wall Street Journal
Verizon to Offer iPhone Users Unlimited Data

By SPENCER E. ANTE
Verizon Wireless will offer unlimited data plans when it starts selling the
iPhone, a person familiar with the matter said, providing a key means of
distinguishing its service from rival AT&T Inc.
New buyers of the Apple Inc. phone on AT&T's network have to choose between
one of two data plans, each of which caps the amount that can be used. AT&T
did away with its unlimited plan for new subscribers last summer, hoping to
gain a measure of control over heavy users and to put itself in a better
position to turn rising data use into revenue growth.
AT&T's biggest smartphone data plan-two gigabits for $25 a month-is cheaper
than Verizon's $30 unlimited plan as long as users don't go over the cap.
Still, many subscribers dislike the idea of data caps, according to a survey
last year by analysts at Sanford Bernstein. That's in part because megabits
aren't as intuitive as minutes. AT&T says its two-gigabit plan would allow
subscribers to stream 200 hours of YouTube video a month.
AT&T didn't immediately comment. The carrier allowed existing iPhone
subscribers to keep their unlimited plans when it made the switch last year.
It wasn't clear how long Verizon would offer unlimited plans. Its executives
have said repeatedly that the industry needs to move to some form of tiered
pricing as data use rises, but for the moment the carrier is sticking with
its current data plans.
Verizon feels the large investments it has made in its wireless networks
over the past few years and investments planned for this year have given it
the ability to handle iPhone-type loads.
AT&T has acknowledged it was caught by surprise by iPhone users' heavy data
consumption. The demand weighed on AT&T's network and caused problems like
dropped calls, hurting the carrier's reputation.
Verizon's confidence could be tested this year. Analysts think the carrier,
which has 93 million subscribers, could sell as many as 12 million iPhones
in the first year.

Re: Student in Detroit Area Looking for Mac/VO training?

2011-01-09 Thread Earle M. Harrison
Hello Al,

My company Handy Tech NOrth America has developed a 3 day basic training
workshop and a workbook and study guide that can be purchased separately for
those who don't have the time or financial resources to do the three day class.
We also offer telephone training on the subject at a reasonable rate. Several
of our customers purchase the workbook which comes with an audio tutorial and
then schedule time to meet with us on the phone to work through some things
they are still a bit unclear on.

I know that this list is brimming with extremely talented people who have
gotten to where they are by simply diving in and the help that I've seen given
on this list is mind glowingly impressive. however, for those who need to
come up to speed quickly and function best in a structured learning
environment, Perhaps we can be of help.

The 3 day workshop is a great option because it a sort of an emersion into the
OS while having plenty of support and other participants learning the same
stuff with whom to interact. For our out of town participants, we offer
shuttle service to and from the training center and we just started using a bed
and breakfast a few blocks from our office for lodging and I hear the breakfast
is wonderful. The cost of the class isn't cheep, but it does include the
shuttle service snacks and beverages during breaks and lunch. Ok, people might
go home with more than an understanding of the Mac OS under their belt (LOL).

Feel free to call me between 8:00 A.M and 5:00 P.M. Monday-Friday if you would
like to explore these options:

Re: Adding music to playlists in iTunes

2011-01-09 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Yes. If you created the Playlist on your iPhone, it should automatically sync
and become a playlist within iTunes. If you wish to edit it within iTunes on
your Mac, simply locate the songs you wish to add to the playlist, press
VO-shift-m to bring up the contextual menu and then choose Add to Playlist and
subsequently, the specific playlist from the submenu.

I have my settings set so that it only syncs specific playlists and any
playlist that is created on the iPhone will be automatically checked for
syncing purposes. to confirm this:

1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac and itunes should open.
2. Navigate to the iPhone in the Devices area of the Source List.
3. Select the Music button to display the Music syncing options.
4. Interact with the Scroll area and tell iTunes to Sync only Selected
Playlists.
5. Select the specific playlists in the playlists table within the Scroll area.
6. Apply your changes by pressing the Apply or Sync button in the Capacity Bar

Re: following these directions to speed up apple mail, except I can't get past the first step

2011-01-09 Thread Jon Cohn
If you right click while in the AppleScript editor several basic forms are
available.

I took two of these to create the script at the end of this message.
The first one was Action Clauses->Timeout Clauses and the second was
Dialog Clauses->Two Button.

So this script should display a dialog box for 30 seconds. If you click yes or
do nothing then it will say quitting mail.
If you click No then it will say OK forget it then and exit

try
with timeout of 30 seconds
display dialog "Are you ready to Clean the mail Application?"
buttons {"No", "Yes"} default button 2

if the button returned of the result is "No" then

say "OK forget it then..."
return

end if
end timeout
end try
say "quitting mail"

Re: VueScan question

2011-01-09 Thread Doug Lee
Vuscan probably works well, though I haven't used it recently. I do
know, though, that it is like recent Safari versions in that it works
way way faster if you have a physical monitor attached than if you
don't.

Vuescan will scan and also do some OCR. It may be enough for simple tasks,

page orientation. I've had some success with the trial version of Vuescan .
But, then Vo and VU had an apparent disagreement, and I never got back to
trying to make it work. I'd try using Vuescan solo before investing more money
in Abby. But, that's just me being a cheapskate.
BTW: I find scanning extremely slow using my mac and the available software. I
finally reverted to using the PC for that task. That said, I'd love to be
proven wrong in that regard.

Controlling Netflix with Apple TV remote

2011-01-09 Thread Brian Miller
All,

I don't know if this is an appropriate question for this listserv, but I
just set up my Apple TV and the Voice Over is great... Accept I can't quite
figure out how to move around in the netflix environment. I can click on a
link to see new releases on the website, and even play them, which is great,
but I can't figure out how to go back -- that is, how to return to the main
page; there doesn't seem to be a link that VO reads that goes back, just
forward through more options.

Any suggestions, tutorials, or guides would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Hi Al:
I know the Apple folks are trying to have certified VO trained personnel at
most of their locations. I'd probably start by phoning the local Apple stores.
When I got started, they even waved the requirement that I purchase one to one
when I bought my Mac. Granted it was an exception, but I'd say it's worth
looking there first. For my $100 bucks, I've gotten quite a bit of assistance.
(Gee, and I still don't know nothin'!) Just kidding.
Otherwise, there are guides, tutorials and podcasts. I'd be willing to assist
by phone to some degree.

The Fine Art of Trackpad Control

2011-01-09 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi All,
Perhaps I'm just dense, but I can't seem to master the VO trackpad navigation
system to save my life. I gather it's quite similar to one which many people
have gotten used to on the IPhone, so I know it should be possible.
I'm even having trouble turning the system on via trackpad. When I'm told to
"rotate two fingers clockwise", I interpret that to mean put my pointer and
middle fingers on the pad and move them around in a roughly circular fashion.
I've done that repeatedly to no effect. Should I be using a different pair of
fingers? Should they not be on the pad at the same time? Am I misconstruing
the word "rotate?"
Any advice on this navigation mode would be greatly appreciated.
Best and thanks,
Zack.

Re: The Fine Art of Trackpad Control

2011-01-09 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi Zack:
Think of the trackpad more as a small flat radio dial. You can position two
fingers about an inch apart, and pretend to turn the litle dial clockwZise.
Or, trying keeping one finger still and moving the other clockwise around it.
Finally, do this while holding the VO keys with your other hand to turn on
trackpad. To turn it off, f course the movement would then be counter
clockwise.HTH Zarolyn H

Re: The Fine Art of Trackpad Control

2011-01-09 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Zack,

Sounds like you've got the right idea. Are you getting results from any other
gestures on the trackpad, such as swiping left or right? Did you turn on the
Trackpad Commander in your VoiceOver Utility / Commanders screen? Are you using
the external Magic Trackpad, or is it the built-in trackpad of a macbook?

Cheers,
Bryan

garmin GPS iphone app

2011-01-09 Thread Mike Arrigo
Hi everyone, well I decided to try the Garmin GPS App, besides a couple buttons
that have strange labels, it's very accessible, it's the first version, there
are some improvements I hope they will make. First, this app does not store its
maps on the device, it downloads them as needed, this means that you could have
problems if you end up in an area with no coverage, I think most areas are
covered these days though. One feature I really hope will be added is to have
spoken instructions when in walk mode, currently it just beeps to indicate when
you need to turn, but spoken instructions are only provided for driving roots.
I emailed them asking for this feature in an update.

Re: garmin GPS iphone app

2011-01-09 Thread James Mannion
Wow, that is great to hear that it does pass the accessibility test at
least. I hope they will see fit to add spoken instructions while in a
walking route. Simply beeping to tell you when to turn seems generally
not user friendly all the way around and if they can have it speak
instructions for a driving route already anyway, what is the point of
leaving it out and substituting a beep for it instead? I actually
thought I remembered you reporting that app to be inaccessible before,
but since you say it is the first version I guess I am confusing it
with something else. Your testing and reporting and all the help you
contribute with podcasts and reporting and all are much appreciated.

Re: garmin GPS iphone app

2011-01-09 Thread Bryan Jones
I also had the opportunity to do some more walking with he Garmin StreetPilot
App today. As Mike mentions, the pedestrian mode did not speak at all for me,
and the feature called "Pedestrian Alert" only gave a brief series of beeps and
a short vibration when approaching turns, and those did not always occur when I
expected them too. At one point my dog and I became disoriented, I think
because this was our first walk with my neighborhood roads being snow covered,
and I eventually abandoned the Garmin app and used old reliable Navigon and
Sendero LookAround to get us back on track.

I also noted some choppiness in VO while the StreetPilot app was running, even
with all other apps closed.

Re: Playlist question

2011-01-09 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Unless something has changed drastically in newer generations of the iPod Nano,
when you create a Playlist, even if the Nano is selected in Devices, the
playlist is actually created within iTunes, not the iPod. If I'm understanding
your post correctly, then you'll have done just that. To move that specific
playlist over onto the iPod:

• select the iPod from your Devices list.
• go under your Music tab.
• Make sure the Sync Music box is checked.
• Select the "Sync selected Playlists, Artists and Genres" radio button.
• Interact with the Playlists table and check the box for the new playlist you
created.

That should do it. Note that if songs are in multiple playlists, only one copy
of the song is actually placed on the iPod and simply references to it are
placed in the playlist database.

Later...

Re: garmin GPS iphone app

2011-01-09 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I think your mistaken about Simply beeping to tell you when to turn seems
generally
not user friendly all the way around. If your sighted , what more would you
need? You can read street signs so you wouldn't need street names spoken. You
would just want some indication of when to turn. Driving is a bit different
because your moving at a greater rate of speed so it is more likely to miss
hard to see signs, and you just can't always glance down at the screen so voice
guidance is more useful here then in pedestrian mode. So in short, having this
feature in pedestrian mode, would be something that would really only benefit
the blind and visually impaired.

Re: skype questions

2011-01-09 Thread Sarah Alawami
Hello. See my tutotrial on the latest stable release of skype but basically
your first answer to yoru first question is no.

You should be able to type in the table and have your contact come in focus.
your chat thing works like this. type the sms and hit I believe control enter.
the keystroke ks different then a chat and I don't send sms messages as they
are a bit bugy.

Re: Playlist question

My advice would be to create a playlist of the same name on iTunes, then go to
the playlist on your iPod and do a select all on all the tracks, then copy,
then go to the playlist of the same name on your iTunes library and paste.

Not an ideal solution but it works

Yet another iOS audio game under development: Captain Dynamite and the Fallen Hero

2011-01-09 Thread Orin
Hey all,

This time it's a rhythm music game based on a superhero story. You're jamming
to some awesome orchestrated music.

Youtube videos are below.

Please note: In the videos, you'll notice DataGirl is telling the player to hit
X, A and B. This is because this game is cross platform, coming out on XBox
Live Arcade, PC and iOS. The developer when making these videos happens to be
playing on the XBox version.

Since the developer plans on having XBox achievements, guess what? There's
bound to be iOS Game Center achievements for us to get. Here are the links to
these awesome videos.

Chapter 1 (Two Parts):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csY2cKSTmfI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeTfu7PfotA

Chapter 2 (Two parts):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_TX4MKj0EM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Oqy453MyKQ

Also please note that as the story progresses, more events will be added
besides up, down, jump, kick and punch and the codes, there will be more of
those to remember. Also two difficulty modes, this one is the easiest.

Definitely will be picking this up for my iPod.
