Granted I had a skilled pilot looking over my shoulder but I do a lot of the primary flying work. Especially on modern aircraft with up-to-date avionics you can do a lot independently. You'd be surprised how many of the devices have some sort of spoken output. A lot of the time you just sit back and chill radioing in once in a while, getting a heading speed and duration and fly where the guy on the ground tels you to. Real high end aircraft like the A380 or the new 777 coming out do everything automatically including taxi, take off, landing and parking. The pilots just observe to make sure things are going well. This is one reason there hasn't been a major plane crash in the last ten years. More and more functions are being taking from humans and offloaded to the machines which greatly improves reliability and safety. You just need someone like Sully sitting there at the ready in case all goes wrong and you have to land in the east river.:) Even on a small business jet like what I use though there are very advanced features. You only have to steer for the first few hundred feet and actually fly by hand for the last 1000 or so. It's pretty comfortable.
