Re: problems saving using save as in text edit and pages

2010-12-01 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Marlaina,

I don't know whether reinitialising the PRAM will solve your problem, but it
fixed some strange behaviour I was getting recently.

To do this, shut down your computer, then hold down the following keys:
Command, Option, letter P, and letter R. With all four keys held down, press
the Power button and keep the four keys held down until you've heard the start
up chime four times. Let go of the keys and allow the computer to boot normally.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Alex pronouncing weirdly at times

2010-12-01 Thread Chris Snyder
Another interesting issue with our dear Alex is that he will pronounce certain
words one way while reading via the VO-A command versus when you interact with
text and read it word by word or line by line.

Hi all!
I do not use Alex!
I like Victoria and she also says the capital letter then the rest of the word!
Someone else said in another thread that it could be how the message was sent I
think she meant [ although I'm not sure ] hht or however its spelt!
And my theory is messages coming from the other side not Mac but some other
device w*!
But I could be wrong on that!
Anyway I do not think its a vo problem just how the original message was
written!

Re: Alex pronouncing weirdly at times

2010-12-01 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

I have been wondering about that myself. I've noticed this happen in people
only sending via Outlook, regardless if it is plane or HTML view on my end. it
actually hasn't mattered much. I always have my messages in HTML view even
those sent from others, and it only does it when it is an e-mail from someone
running Windows.

It's weird, but I have no idea why that'd happen. Switching into plane view
doesn't make a difference in that case for me, but it'd be nice if it could be
looked into.

Re: Alex pronouncing weirdly at times

2010-12-01 Thread Oriol Gómez
I think it happens because Alex analyzes a paragraph before speaking
it. That's like the issue with nambu and nahmbu, probably. When its a
whole text that is read it is analyzed first. However, when it sees
paragraphs such as in html it will see it as a whole thing.

Hi Teresa,

I have the Braillino from Handytech and don't know if I can help. But after
having trouble hooking up the BrailleNote, I thought I'd offer my advice for
what it's worth :).
Have you tried to add the play via USB? Also I wonder if when the display is
connected via USB if you would be able to see on the desktop. I'm not sure if
this is of any help, but I try. I hope you are having a wonderful day.

Happily,

Re: Adium problem with requests

2010-12-01 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

What messages do you need sounds for? New messages? In that case, just add a
sound to the "group chat" event. That applies to IRC as well as regular group
chats when you invite multiple people into conversations. The same applies to
speaking text. I use this method constantly when using IRC, and I have had no
issues so far. You may consider that option.

Re: watching TV on my Mac preferably live

2010-12-01 Thread Michael Thurman
this is probably already been covered, but satellite systems, direct
dishnetwork and the free to air mpeg systems all use different and proprietary
data formats and encryption, so any litle box would either have to be supported
specifically by directv dish or whatever, or would have to control an existing
reciever and connect to it as if it were a tv , as a vcr would connect to a
cable box and control it back in the day.

2010-12-01 Thread Michael Thurman
nope the built i mic on the macbook pro at leas tthe 13 inch model I have is
right above the escape and f1 keys tweeters for the left and right channels
are located under the shift keys aproximately, with a "low" frequcy driver
embeded near the screen it actually appears to have 3 drivers from what I can
hear sing some tubing like a stethoscope it's worth playing with audio hijack
pro just to hear what te built in mic is hearing sometimes, also the ambient
noise reduction can be very dramatic in it's effects and might account for some
of the speech recognitin issues. I will give it a try with that mic, and with
my mixer and studio mic and see what I come up with. I'll let you know if I
come up with anything new

Re: trouble sending attachments in mail

2010-12-01 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi Chad,

Would you be able to outline the exact steps you perform? To ensure the file
has been attached, check through your e-mails to confirm that the file has been
selected. An image with the file name will be placed wherever your cursor is
at the time of the attachment, representing the file.

Also, ensure that the "Send Windows-friendly attachments" checkbox is checked.
Normally, it is checked by default, but you may have unchecked it accidentally.
Of course, that checkbox is only important if your friend is running Windows.

Re: re-trouble sending attachments in mail

2010-12-01 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

In that case, consider it may be an issue on his end. If you check if the
attachment is within the message, you should have no problems.

If the attachment is but he does not see the message, consider the following.
Does this occur with all recipients or only one in particular on your end?

I know that he is a WIndows user, but do you know which email client this
recipient is using?

Is there any indication the attachment was removed by the recipient's incoming
mail server or by antivirus software?

Lastly, are these photo/image attachments that appear but are embedded and not
available as an attached file?

If it is an image, composing your mail in rich text on the Mac sometimes
causes problems in Microsoft Outlook, as Microsoft Outlook has issues reading
e-mails with attached images sent by mail.app when sending as RTF. If sending
to a WIndows Outlook user, you may consider using plane text for an image.

Those are the only things I can think of at the moment, except If any of you
are using the resizing button at the bottom of the Compose window. Generally,
to reduce file size, DO NOT DO SO on any files other than those for photo
files. Using the resize button with PDF, will convert the file type, but will
not warn you.

Also, using the resize image button applies to all files attached, even later
in composing the message, and will cause any PDF to fail for the recipient.

Not sure if this is relevant, Chad, but it might just be.

Nic

Re: trying to use safari to empty gmail trash

2010-12-01 Thread Buddy Brannan
Speaking of gmail, mail isn't working with my gmail account anymore. It refuses
to log in. I've deleted the account and re-created it several times with no
better results. The account goes offline and won't check. I even get that the
password is wrong, which it isn't, as I was able to log into the web site with
it. Very odd schtuff.

Thanks, Alison and Carolyn,

How do you mean adding it by USB? Is there a utility besides VO that will tweak
that for me? Also, I don't see it on the desktop or in disk utility. I do

OK, Apple TV is Here and a handy Remote

2010-12-01 Thread Kevin Mattingly
So the apple tv arrives via fedex today. I take it out of the box and yep, it
looks cool, kind of space age like. I unwrapped it and then the remote. I
decide oh well, what do these buttons on the remote do (curiosity killed the
cat). Whala, press the button and my Mac mini fires up ITunes and starts
playing the first song in the list. Does anyone have a list of how to functions
for the remote? I haven't hooked up the TV yet because I don't have the handy
dandy HDMI cable. Once I hook it up, get it running and play with it some, I'll
pass along any learnings.

Is there an accessible Usenet client

2010-12-01 Thread Massimo Vettoretti
Hi all.

I am looking for an accessible NNTP usenet client. I was trying four of them,
but none is usable.

I tried Nemo. It seemed very very promising; the configuration wizard was fully
accessible, but... the table containing the subscribed groups looks empty to
Voice Over. I mean, it can see the table but all rows and columns are empty for
VO. Of course, the control containing the message itself is a standard HTML
content that VO can read with no problem... :-) Menu bar cannot be accessed by
pressing VO+m, but they respond to ctrl+f2. Voice Over will not read them. :-)

Ok, uninstalled Nemo, I instal thunderbird. Just for fun. As you already know,
no accessibility at all there.

Thoth was m third attempt. Another disaster. I was not able to access the
preferences dialog.

The last usenet client I tried is Unisom. Preferences are accessible and so are
the menus and other pars of the application. But the overall accessibility is
less then pore. Some controls do respond to VO+space, others need the simulated
mouse click, and some are triggered only by a physical mouse click. The
message list is not easy to find, and the threaded view is not a list or a
table but some kind of text area... I am not sure... :-)

Any help?

Re: OK, Apple TV is Here and a handy Remote

2010-12-01 Thread Kevin Mattingly
It is a little box about the size of a DSL modem and it streams content to your
HD TV from the Internet, via Netflicks or ITunes or YouTube..

You're on your own for your room name. I tend to stick with standards myself so
man cave or man room is perfect. If I wanted to go off the beaten path, I might
call it the man relm or maybe even Kev's Bar and Tap room.

Re: OK, Apple TV is Here and a handy Remote

2010-12-01 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
Ok, so what part does voiceover play and if I get the one without a hard drive,
that is the model with vo? Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I have
gigs and gigs of music which I can't play on our Bose, and this looks like it
might solve my problem. Before I go to the Apple store, I want to at least
look like I know what I'm talking about. Does vo speak menus? Could I get
them to show me that in the store? Again, sorry for so many questions. I
don't know how you people keep all this stuff straight, LOL!

hmmm. I thought it had an nntp functionality built in somewhere. I know pine
can do nntp, but it gets picky one some groups, especially the binaries groups.

Re: OK, Apple TV is Here and a handy Remote

Dish has an IPhone app that's free. Just attach your receiver via ethernet
cable to your router, download and install the app, and you've got control of
your DVR. I've had moderate success so far even in playing back content from
the disk.

copying from 1 usb card to another

2010-12-01 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
I will admit that I still get a little confused trying to find removable media
onto which I copy books, but I am usually eventually successful. However, I
now want to copy from one usb thumb drive to another. I seem only to see one
and not both. Can I do this and if so, what am I doing wrong?

Maybe somebody could demystify the whole process of copying from downloads to
removable media. Sometimes I have no trouble and other times, oh boy! I keep
running into that mobile me thing which I do not have set up and don't want to
have set up since I sync via google. Any help on copying card to card and
folder to card would be greatly appreciated.

Just to expand on this,

DirectTV is a different type of thing. Apple TV lets you aggregate your
digital media on to your TV where something like a DirecTV or Dish box
grabs live content over the air or from space.

Re: question on how to move the mouse

You would use the voiceover cursor for that, there's no need to involve the
mouse, use the control option arrow keys for that. Voice over does not use the
mouse for reviewing the way windows screen readers do.

Re: Final vinyl

2010-12-01 Thread Eric Caron
Sorry I'm entering late on this thread but my comcast internet was down for
several days. If the goal is to record old vinyl records to your mac, I did a
podcast some time ago that shows how to do this step by step using the Griffin
mic, a usb turn table, and Amadeus Pro. It is located on blindcooltech.com
I think it was called Vinyl to CD with Amadeus Pro. I was a pretty new mac
user when I did it and it is a bit long. On the other hand I tried to be very
specific and guide a new user through the process of recording a vinyl album
and even how to divide it into individual tracks.

I found the process difficult to learn on my own so created the podcast to try
to help a blind new mac user or new sound editing program user master the task
without all the frustration.

I hope this helps.

The Resetting of Prams

2010-12-01 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Ann,

A couple of comments/questions here. First, this is a very difficult keystroke
to execute. You're talking about typing five keystrokes at once, I cannot do
this. I can hit Command-Option P with my right hand, hit the button to power
on the machine with my left hand, and then while holding down the 3 keys, race
over before hearing the music and hit the R key. I don't hear 4 chimes, I hear
a buzzing sound 4 times, then the normal startup sound again. Am I executing
the reset procedure properly? How does one know that it actually worked?
Thanks.

Re: question on how to move the mouse

2010-12-01 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Marlaina,

If you want to use the mouse, you can move your VO cursor to the item you wish
to interact with. If your cursor tracking is on, then you can click the
physical mouse at this point. If cursor tracking is not on, use VO-command-F5
to bring the mouse to the VO cursor. By the way, you can toggle VO tracking by
pressing shift-vo-f3 or set it more permanently in the VO utility.

Where do I go from here? I'm not sure whether to contact someone at Apple or

Re: copying from 1 usb card to another

2010-12-01 Thread Jude DaShiell
Hmmm, my suggestion would be to only attach one usb drive to the computer
at first. Then locate it with finder and edit its name to source. Once
done leave the source drive in the computer. Next put the other usb drive
into the computer and locate that with finder and edit the drive name to
dest. Now you've got your two usb cards attached and both named to
something sensible and copying ought to be a bit easier. On Wed, 1 Dec

Hey Jude,
I've only got two usb drives on my computer and I need one for the braille
display! so that means I've only got one to work with. From what I see most
new Macbooks have two usb drives. the Mac mini has four but one is taken up
with the keyboard unless one gets a bluetooth one I think.

Suggestion, buy a usb hub. Models have as many as 8 ports available.
Plug that into one of those two ports and if you have another $20, buy
another hub and plug the second one into the other usb port on the
computer. Power those up, and now your computer has 16 usb ports.

Re: The Resetting of Prams

2010-12-01 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

Also, holding these keys down is fine, as long as it is done just when you hear
the startup chime. Keep in mind, there is a startup delay, which means that you
can do it within this timeframe. I often just hold down any keys to affect the
startup when I hear the chime. Not a second after, but as soon as I hear it.
The time between hearing the drive and the startup chime itself is significant
enough to actually reach the keys in time.

You will need to hold them for a while, however. First, you will hear the
regular chime. Keep holding them for a while longer, until you hear your drive
again. Don't let go until you hear a second chime, possibly at a much louder
volume depending on your volume settings.

You may also have to reset some settings in preferences, as some of these are
stored in the PRAM.

Nic

Re: to those of y'all using Skype 5 beta

2010-12-01 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hello Ray,

Not a word. In fact, comments sent in on the blog after the release date have
not even been approved yet, so I'm not sure what is going on. At any rate, no
updates on the big Skype blog, either, not even on the Mac-specific one.

I have to wonder what Skype's view of the various comments might be. Currently,
on both blogs, sighted and blind people alike say the release is riddle with
bugs. Of course, I have my own opinion on that. None of these comments after
the official release date of Skype 5 Beta have been approved. Hopefully,
someone knows something else.

Re: question on how to move the mouse

2010-12-01 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Marlaina,

To move the mouse to places that VO cannot reach, you need to turn on
MouseKeys. This is done in System Preferences under Universal Access. Select
the fourth tab, Mouse & Trackpad, and just to the right you'll find MouseKeys.

You have to hold down the FN key to use the K, U, I, O, and 8 keys to control
the mouse when MouseKeys is on.

You also need to check the Speak text under mouse after delay check box in the
Announcements tab of the Verbosity category in the VoiceOver Utility.

Cheers,

Anne
