Hi! What messages do you need sounds for? New messages? In that case, just add a sound to the "group chat" event. That applies to IRC as well as regular group chats when you invite multiple people into conversations. The same applies to speaking text. I use this method constantly when using IRC, and I have had no issues so far. You may consider that option.
