Re: Spell check while typing?
Hi Carolyn, Thanks for the note. Curiously I do not see a compose category in vo utilities -- I also checked the edit menu in vo utilities, but the "check spelling as you type" option is dimmed. As a reminder, the following was written in my initial post. Quote In Apple Mail under edit -> spelling and grammar -> check spelling, I specified "while typing". In VO utility I set verbosity -> spelling to announce atributes. > unquote TIA for any/all ideas. Hello Geoff, Check Spelling can also be found in Mail Preferences under Composing. Mine is set there to "As I type", just as it is in the Edit menu of Mail. I don't know where else you could look. does audacity work with voice over?
Hi list, I listened to a podcast in blind cool tech in which audacity was used for audio editing using voice over, and it was said it was accessible. However, I downloaded it and voice over only reads unknown. The webpage also says it is not very accessible at the moment with voice over, so I am a bit confused. Does anyone know if it is or is not accessible with voice over? in the podcast it was demonstrated and it seemed it was, but it isn't working for me. I've downloaded the beta release 3.12. Re: Mysterious second Mail Account
I have not seen this behavior before. A couple of questions: 1. Are you still receiving mail in the Maiul application? 2. When setting up outgoing (SMTP) mail you need to indicate a password for GMAIL, is this still configured? I believe you need to click on the advanced tab in the account setup to configure SMTP outgoing mail service. braille display help
I have a degenerative eye condition, so I'm really feeling the need to improve my braille skills, but I've reached a catch 22. I have a hunch that getting a braille display will improve my reading by opening up much much more content to read, but on the other hand, my reading speed is so slow, that it's hard to justify paying 3-4 thousand dollars for a braille display. I'm also left handed, which i think contributes to a poor reading speed. Any suggestions, do I shell out that much money and risk not using the display, or do i continue to read the 2 or 3 books I have in the hopes of improvement? Well, it is up to you! I read braille all the time but personally don't want another piece of equipment on my desk. Re: braille display help
Hi Samuel, I was thinking about your predicament as I read your post. Is it possible you could look for a used display instead of shelling out the thousands it would cost to purchase a new display? Just a thought. I find that my reading ability only increased when I started reading more. I have been blind since I was three-years-old, I don't know if that helps. But I think if your eye condition is gdegenerative, having a Braille display will open up a whole new tactile world to you. Do you want a notetaker or just a Braille display? Re: does audacity work with voice over?
Hi, I'm running the 3.11 beta. The program itself has either glaring inconsistancies or an interface that just confuses me, but it's perfectly accessible with VO. I can record, play, stop, jump forward and back, set up my audio levels, and edit out parts that I don't want. I've gotten bogged down in splitting files to track using labels. The process is accessible, but the methodology confounds me. Re: braille display help
Hi Samuel: You bring up an interesting and potentially hot topic here. As a person who grew up relying heavily on braille, and also teaching it, I'd have to say a display would never be a bad investment; if you want to read more. Hardcopy braille is getting harder to come by, in spite of it's benefits to so many readers. A lot of people do extremely well relying strictly on audio input. Their language and spelling are impeccable. For me, it's almost a sense of literacy I get from reading on my own, without a synthetic voice affecting how I visualize characters, or how I think something should be spelled. It's what works for me, but not for everyone. If you like reading for yourself rather than other voicing, I'd have to say go for a braille display that will afford you the opportunity to experience the latest books along with everyone else and in a format you prefer. . I've read through 9 large volumes that made up the book "Gone With The Wind," and I've also had it read to me. Different experience entirely.:) Just my personal take. Re: braille display help
Hum, Braille display changed my entire outlook on braille. It made the whole system more portable so that I could concentrate on what I was reading without counting down the pages Until I could get rid of the enormous stack of braille in front of me. One thing about it, if you do fork out for a full 40 sell display, you had better find uses for it. I was lucky. Braille displays are funded here. Even still, I have forced myself to make use of it. There's no way an expensive piece of kit like that will ever sit around unused. I really wish everyone could have a braille display. Re: Spell check while typing?
Hi Geoff, I don't have the problem you and others are having with the announcement of misspelled words. I went through all my VO settings and tried to duplicate your results. I think I might have found the problem. Under verbosity in VO utilities, I have "while typing speak" set to characters and words. When I changed this to none or character, pressing spacebar after a misspelled word did not announce it as such. So try setting the "while typing speak" to characters and words and see what happens. hth Ricardo Walker rwalker...@gmail.com Twitter & Skype: rwalker296 Google Voice: 1-646-450-2197 On Oct 18, 2010, at 12:22 PM, GEOFF WAALER wrote: > Okay thanks Anne and Carolyn, > > The edit menu and compose tab in mail appear to skin the same cat since > changes made in one place propagate to the other. > I wonder what setting Kawal, Les and I have in common? > > Take care. > Geoff > > On Oct 18, 2010, at 9:18 AM, Carolyn Haas wrote: > >> Hi Geoff: >> OOPS, my bad. Hi Kawal: I think there's an automatic correct thingie in there somewhere which will allow for the automatic replacement of misspelled words. I'd think this is possible in apple mail but I can't find a way to do this. Re: vm ware fusion and key mapping
Hi, Key remap worked for me because I am a window-eyes user. When I installed the key remap program, it placed a numberpad on the right side of my keyboard automatically. So, I instantly had an insert key and all of my windows mouse movement and clicking functions exactly where I am used to having them without even needing to switch to laptop layout. I'm not sure what I'd do if I had to fiddly fart around with passing the caps lock key and then making it a jaws key and then switching to a laptop layout where I'd have to relearn all the keystrokes, just to use windows on my mac. Re: braille display help
Hi Allison, If you use the Braillino to control the Macbook you can make some oh, boy, what do they call those? Shortcuts? It's supposed to be real powerful in controlling the nit. I never developed it because I like my braille displays straight up! I don't like those shortcuts. And it'll be bluetooth of course! the brailllino has a calculator and a word processor and you can supposedly hook up a printer and an embosser. so you can tell us more about it when you do all that stuff! But I think if your eye condition is gdegenerative, having a Braille display will open up a whole new tactile world to you. Do you want a notetaker or just a Braille display? THe displays without the notetaking capability are much less expensive. I've heard that APH makes a nice display, with concave cells. I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Handytech Braillino. I hope I have helped. I also read with my left hand almost exclusively. I have calluses on my hand from guitar and started using it more and more often to combat the calluses. Hi, You don't need a braille display to improve your reading speed. You could always get a braille book or braille magazine and find good reading mateials! there's ESPN the Magazine, PC World, the computer magazine, There's a chess magazine, there're various other magazines and books to be had from your local library. What happens when you use a PC keyboard on a Mac?
Dear All, I seldom visit this group. My wife, who is sighted, and I have decided to buy Mac Minis for Christmas. I'm wondering if I can use a PC keyboard to control my new Mac. If I do, what complications will I encounter. The reason I'm asking is because I have three PCs in my office that use the same keyboard through a KVM switch. One of these, a decrepit PC laptop that I use to send and receive mail, store my iTunes, and surf the web, is due to be replaced by the new Mac Mini. If I can use one keyboard to control them all, I'd be happy. but I'll understand if I can't/shouldn't try that. Is the Command Key interchangeable with the PC's Alt key? What about the Control and Option keys on the Mac? I'm not discussing them as they relate to being the VO keys. By the way, what keys would you use as the VO keys on a PC keyboard? Can you do that? Since I don't come by the board that often, would you mind terribly copying me privately on any responses in addition to your public postings so that I am sure to see them while those who visit this forum more regularly would still see the public posts? Hi Kevin: My guess is that if you use a pc keyboard, your Mac will stage a rebellion, and blow up and self destruct Ok, not really. But, having been a pc user and made the switch, I'd strongly recommend getting one of these nifty little Apple Wireless keyboards for around $60. You'll have a much easier time transitioning. a none too flattering review of the Ibook store 6 months after launch
TUAW has a review of the IBooks store that doesn't have much good to say about it, and with good reason. You will find a long list of Random House-owned publishers whose product will not be found on the IBook store due to Apple and Random's inability to come to terms on price. Note that nothing was said about Voice Over as the reason. http://www.tuaw.com/2010/10/14/the-ibookstore-six-months-after-launch-one-big-failure/ Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: a none too flattering review of the Ibook store 6 months after launch
Cheree Heppe here: The review of the IBooks Store referenced here appears to have no link for anyone who disagrees with the reviewer to comment. This diverges from other reviewers I have recently read in which there are separate links for those who agree and those who do not agree with the review. Is it true, then, that one cannot order books from Amazon or read them from non-IBook resources while using an IPhone or IPad? I have gotten skeptical of reviewers. There was an IPad case made of leather that was reviewed. But, once I saw the case myself, I could only guess that the reviewer dry labbed the item, that is, looked at a photo, but didn't actually test the case, but wrote a review as if he had. The details of the review did not match the reality of the case. When NetBooks came out, one reviewer whined all over the Internet about how one design placed the mouse click buttons vertically adjacent to the left and right of the track pad, not at the bottom, the way he was used to. I don't use a mouse, but my daughter does. She had no problem with the new configuration and I certainly had no problem with the small footprint of the NetBook. My guess, that one was dry labbed, too. Back to the IBooks Store. I guess I don't mind that Project Gutenberg is featured there. There is nothing amiss with out-of-copyright books or with wanting to read them. Some of the in copyright books have alterations by editors which make them worse than abridged copies of the original texts. The rest, well, time will tell. But I'm not limiting myself to one outlet or vendor, whatever one reviewer feels he has to do.
