Hi Teresa; Sorry I didn't get to this until now, but I'm hoping I caught you before you've taken the drastic step of archiving and reinstalling Mail. Fwd: URGENT: Updated Information & Detailed Instructions FCC Cell Phone Accessibility Comments Due Thu 9/30 Agency Now Accepting Comments By Email
Hi All; I'm forwarding this note with updated info which allows people to send comments via email. Please get involved as it just doesn't get any easier than this!… Smiles, Cara :) Begin forwarded message: From: Mika Pyyhkala Date: September 29, 2010 4:55:49 PM PDT To: viph...@googlegroups.com Subject: URGENT: Updated Information & Detailed Instructions FCC Cell Phone Accessibility Comments Due Thu 9/30 Agency Now Accepting Comments By Email Reply-To: viph...@googlegroups.com The comment filing instructions are also on the web page: http://twishort.com/abte6 Each section of this email is separated by ### Greetings, Over the past 2 days or so I have gotten a bit more information on the specific nuts and bolts of the procedures that should be used to file FCC comments regarding mobile phone accessibility. Hot off the presses, is that a senior manager at the FCC has now authorized official comments to be filed and received via standard email messages because some consumers have had difficulty working with the official FCC Electronic Comment Filing System ECFS. This message first contains detailed comment filing instructions, and then provides a detailed account of items you may wish to address in your comments. ###Detailed Comment Filing Instructions Method 1: FCC Express Electronic Comment Filing System This comment filing method is best suited for individuals submitting comments. *Access the web site: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs2/hotdocket/list *Look for the text that says "If the docket you're looking for is not listed," and then click on the link called "Click Here to manually enter the docket number on the upload page"; *Enter the following proceeding number when prompted: 10-145 *Enter your contact information, type in or paste your comments, and press the continue button; *follow any other instructions on subsequent screens to complete your submission. Method 2: File Comments by email *Compose a standard email message addressed to either pam.greg...@fcc.gov or jamal.maz...@fcc.gov *Include the docket number in your subject line: 10-145 *Include your comments either in the text body of your email or as an attached Microsoft Word 97/2000/2003 or PDF file; Method 3: FCC Electronic Comment Filing System This system allows you to upload a file attachment, such as a Microsoft Word 97/2000/2003 or PDF file, in order to submit comments. *Access the web site: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/ *Click on the link called Submit A Filing *Enter the following proceeding number: 10-145 *Fill in the contact details, and other questions requested on the form. Specify the file(s) you want to upload, and press the Continue button; *Follow any subsequent instructions on next screens to ensure your filing is recorded. ###Ideas for comments on Mobile Phone Accessibility for the Blind Dozens or hundreds of pages of material have been written that might give you ideas and perspective on what to say in your comments. Your own real life stories are also invaluable. I for example include a real life story at the end of this message. Some items to consider addressing in your individual or affiliate comments are: *How accessible on a wide range of devices, especially entry level and prepaid phones, is sms text messaging to the blind? Had the telecommunications industry embraced accessibility such that these types of features are available on a broad spectrum of devices including inexpensive handsets? If you have 100 or 1,000 blind people in a room how many can text, let alone used advanced features on their cell phones? By the way, sms text messaging is something that has been available to the public at large for many years, and is no longer considered a cutting edge or advanced feature in the industry; *How well has the mobile telecommunications ecosystem addressed the cost of accessibility? Should device manufacturers be passing on the costs of accessibility to blind consumers who have a 70% unemployment rate? Or like Apple, should the device manufacturer assume the accessibility r&d and implementation cost? ###Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Inaccessible To the Blind *Are you aware that in October 2010 Microsoft will release a platform called Windows Phone 7 This platform strives to compete with the likes of Apple iOS eg iPhones, Blackberry devices, Android devices, etc. Microsoft has indicated that Windows Phone 7 will not have out-of-the-box accessibility, and furthermore, it has not been developed in such a way as to allow 3rd party access technology screen reader developers, like CodeFactory or Nuance, to add accessibility to the platform. The net result is that blind Americans will be excluded from the opportunity to participate and experience Windows Phone 7. Commenters might suggest that the FCC take enforcement action against Microsoft for its fflagrant disregard and negligent behavior as it relates to nonvisual access for people who are blind, or deaf blind in the development of this o
Urgent! Making this even easier!…
Hi All; This is just a quick note with only the most important concise details on how to send your email comments during this last part of the FCC comment period which ends tomorrow. Please do take advantage of this opportunity. File Comments by email *Compose a standard email message addressed to either pam.greg...@fcc.gov or jamal.maz...@fcc.gov *Include the docket number in your subject line: 10-145 *Include your comments either in the text body of your email or as an attached Microsoft Word 97/2000/2003 or PDF file; Please follow these instructions as best you can so that your comments will be heard. Remember that this is your chance to say what YOU feel is important for the future of access for all in regard to mobile technologies. Remember, this is your time to speak. If you don't say it, there's a chance it may not be said. No comment is silly if it's important to you. Hopefully we will see many more times when we can share this opportunity again, but for now, this is the time. RE: 1Password Accessibility
Hi what is the address to signup to the mac-access list. Thanks, Corey -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionar...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Esther Sent: Wednesday, September 29, 2010 9:12 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: 1Password Accessibility Hi Chantelle, I think my1Password post only made it to the mac-access list, because one of the members on that list is an enthusastic user. I've been running the previous version of 1Password, which was accessible, but I haven't installed the current version. The 1Password Pro app for the iPhone is a little tricky to install, but can be done accessibly, as I recall. I can dig through some old notes. They offered the 1Password Pro app as a freebie last Thanksgiving. I think you had confirm both a 4-digit unlock code and then a master password, and you had to press "return" to get to the confirmation fields. I'd probably check with Dane on the mac-access list if I ran into glitches with this. From memory, the Mac software was straightforward, unless they've substantially changed things with this version. The iPhone app is the one that's a bit harder, but it's doable. Cheers, Esther On Sep 29, 2010, Chantelle Griffiths wrote: > Hi Colin, > > Thanks for that. If people come out with some cool hacks for the thing, I'll be more than happy to buy one, report on it's accessibility and then if the worse comes to the worse, I could just sell it again since the resale value on apple products is huge. Hey Sarah and Teresa; I wish I could say what it does, but alas, all I know is that it rebuilds damaged mailboxes. :) I'm assuming there's some sort of table of contents file that gets befuddled and this operation restores it's wits! lol! Re: URGENT: Updated Information & Detailed Instructions FCC Cell Phone Accessibility Comments Due Thu 9/30 Agency Now Accepting Comments By Email
Hi Cara, Can you explain just a little bit more on the FCC? Indeed. Sending an email is way more doable than working in a website with all kinds of official terms, where English is not my native language. I want my voice to be heard, for sure. And, that Apple has now relaxed its accessibility demands by allowing flash on our phones is something that worries me. It feels like accessibility on the iphone is something for today, and maybe no longer for tomorrow. That is very sad and frustrating, let alone the Android or even worse the t-mobile issue you mentioned, where t-mobile can turn off accessibility features on phones. Bad news for us. However, I still don't understand what I could email them about. Who has time there to read a story of mine, telling them how useful my phone is, now that it is almost fully accessible? To be honest, I don't know what an FCC is, whether or not, or what, it has to do with the U.s. government, though judging from Jamal's email address ending in .gov, I think it does. In other words: accessibility is very important to me, but in this regard I'm really feeling stupid now. Hopefully, other list members understand or share this feeling. Is it a one liner they need, for my voice to be heard? Is it a story, a vote for something or something else? I will write today, but please explain the what about. Best regards. Re: URGENT: Updated Information & Detailed Instructions FCC Cell Phone Accessibility Comments Due Thu 9/30 Agency Now Accepting Comments By Email
HI Paul and list; The FCC is the Federal Communications Commission and is a part of the United States government. It is in charge of regulating all forms of wireless communication within this country. -And, please, to anyone who knows more about this, please do feel free to chime in so as to better explain this to anyone whom may need it?… Paul, I'm not sure where you're currently located, but if it's outside of the United States, I'd still suggest you feel free to write them with any comments you have. I think all the feedback from people for whom access to mobile devices is concerned, is important. The comments in the note I forwarded were from others, not me, but I can certainly forward mine if you like. -But this is simpler than that. Even if you only have a one-liner with a suggestion, opinion, or quick story about something to do with mobile access or how such access effects you then it's appropriate to send. SElect people in the FCC do have time to read your note now. They're making themselves available just now to do this. that's why this is so very important. they want to hear from people who have thoughts / feelings on access for mobile technologies. They want to know how or why it is important. They want to know what people's real needs are and what they think should be done to make access to mobile devices better than it is now. How do we think this could happen? What do we think should be done?… Even if you just say something like; 'Look, here's my iPhone and it's all accessible. Other phones should be like this.' :) This would help them because it would be showing them that the way the iPhone works is good for you and helps you out. It would also tell them that you really like the fact that Apple made their phone accessible right out of the box. Even a one liner in this case is valuable. :) So please do feel free to speak out. This just isn't the time for silence. :) All opinions are important and valid!… They want us all to talk to them, so let's all go for it!… Have a totally awesome day y'all!… Smiles, Cara :) On Sep 30, 2010, at 5:04 AM, Paul Erkens wrote: Hi Cara, Can you explain just a little bit more on the FCC? Re: 1Password Accessibility
I use 1Password on my Mac, iPhone, and iPad to sync and maintain strong passwords. The iPad version has a small problem. VO won't read the icons to choose the different sections, like Logins, wallet, secure notes, and settings. The rest of the interface appears working well. I've not used VO with 1Password on the Mac. I believe you can try before you buy. I HIGHLY recommend it. It really has enabled me to use strong and different passwords everywhere I go since it can generate them in any length and complexity you want, and it remembers them. They are working on the one VO problem I mentioned above. In fact the person there I spoke to is visually impaired, though not a VO user. Re: audiobooks
Hi, I'm no expert, but I think all you have to do is set the genra to audiobook in the tags of your mp3 files. It's not a huge inconvenience. Oh know, it's actually a lot nicer to have to jack around with the file info just to get them on your player, but I am about %95 sure that it will actually get you there. I don't think it matters how many files your book is. Your Ipod should recognize each set of files as an audiobook as long as they are all tagged properly. There should be no need to switch formats. cursor tracking problems in ITunes
Hi Ricardo: I can't find the original reply you gave me, but I know you wanted some idea about what exactly is going on. Well, the mouse cursor wanted to stay on the Apple Logo, or the previous song button. I was trying to do things all over the place. Obviously the VO cursor was moving without the mouse cursor. Once in a while the VO/command/f5 key combination would link them, but not very often. It got rather anoying when I was trying to choose a song to play, or a radio stream to listen too, and nothing would happen. I'd check the mouse location, and sure enough, it would be on one of the previously mentioned areas. have done a permissions repair, and now when I try to move from songs to sources, I get a busy signal for a minute or two. The mouse cursor seems to move better now, so maybe I can't have everything work. My remote app on my IPhone takes a full minute or 2 to find my library now too. Thanks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionar...@googlegroups.com. macvisionaries: voiceover and live chats
hello, I seem to be having a problem getting voiceover to track live chats on an html page (in this case: kingdom of loathing). I see this problem in other gui related chat clients (like skype and xchat irc client). is there a setting I can find that will change this behavior. so far, I am inundated with all the commands in the help menu and it takes a rather long time to read through all of them. it probably won't hurt you know that I am recently totally blind (less than 3 months) and I am still learning the basics of voiceover. any help you can offer I would greatly appreciate. Re: drop box menu
The first thing to do is get the mouse tools. If you read the web site you will learn how to use the tools. You will need a sighted person to put the mouse on the dropbox icon. Get the x y coordinates. Open the apple script editor. Copy the script from the e-mail and paste it into the apple script editor. Insert the coordinates. Save the script as a application. Thats it. Louie, This should work for other inaccessible apps on the status menu bar, too. In fact, if you could modify this to switch from absolute screen coordinates to coordinates relative to an app window, we could probably get something working to play Audible samples (at least until the next time they change the page layout). Re: drop box menu
Ester, In this version of voice over the ability to get relative coordinates has ben removed. All one needs to do is to make sure that the app comes up in the same position on the screen. I feel like I am taking a big step back in time, x y is the first way to write jaws scripts for the PC. 3 Questions for Snow Leopard Server Users
Hi Listers -- If you're using SL Server as either a server or client OS would you mind answering the following 3 quick questions? I've done lots of research on this and read the literature, but am looking for some feedback from folks with real-world experience. 1. Using VO, are you able to access all functions of SL Server from the server console? (not a remote session) 2. Have you been able to install and run the same apps on SL server that you would run on SL Client? 3. If you're using SL Server as your client OS, do you experience any problems due to the fact that it is a server OS? For example, is it slower due to additional services running? Re: macvisionaries: voiceover and live chats
ok, I tried turning off cursor tracking. unfortunately, it still wouldn't the active scrolling chat. screen review of such a chat is dicey at best as it tends to skip when the page updates. I think I am going to have to bring this up to the developers of voiceover and see what they can do for me. -Eric On Sep 30, 2010, at 2:32 PM, Colin M wrote: > Hi Eric! > I do not know if this will work in all your chat windows but it works in > Skype and I think in Adium! > When in the chat message turn off cursor tracking with vo+shift+f3 > Then you stay in the chat window so they type something you read it and then > you can reply! > hth Colin > On 30 Sep 2010, at 19:25, Eric Oyen wrote: > >> hello, >> I seem to be having a problem getting voiceover to track live chats on an >> html page (in this case: kingdom of loathing). Re: macvisionaries: voiceover and live chats
ok, here's some details. I am involved with kingdom of loathing. so far, the game is reasonably playable with voiceover. the website sets up 4 frames. top frame: primary access panel. this contains your account and character access links left frame: character information (such as character stats, quest info, etc) middle frame ( called primary frame) is the gameplay area. this is mostly text with some alt-tag graphics that are "clickable" even in voiceover. right frame: chat frame. it appears to be a live scrolling html page. However, I have been unable to get voiceover to read more than 2 lines before it goes into a repeating loop at the top of the page. if I can bypass that manually, then I can read so many lines before it updates and tosses me to the chat input box at the bottom. I have to try and backup to where I last was, byt then it updates again and I am back at the bottom. I can tell you, that chat frame is frustrating. I would like to be able to chat with others in real time, but I don't see how I can do it. I haven't tried this with skype yet. my skype name is: technomage-hawke if anyone wants to help. -Eric -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. seeking tips for interacting with a complicated website
Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone can give me some tips for working with a pretty complicated website. It's similar to Blackboard. It has multiple frames, and many different types of info on a page. Everything seems pretty accessible, except one thing. I need to be able to view and comment on a pretty large text edit field. I can read the text, but I can't write in the text field. I know this is doable, because I can do it on the PC. I tried turning of cursor tracking, but that didn't seem to help at all. Anyone have any suggestions? How do context menus work on the mac? So far, I have been routing mouse to VO cursor and pressing CTRL+click. Is there a shortcut for this? 2. How do I get Voiceover to read the entire row of a table without first navigating to it and pressing VO+r? The reason for this is I would like all Mail message information spoken rather than just the date or subject line; and I would like it to do so without excessive arrowing. 3. DOes there exist a way to quickly check status items such as the date/time without first pressing ctrl+F8 and arrowing around the "extras"? This isn't really a huge deal, I'm just wondering. So far this computer is working out great and I am very satisfied. I have my Ohio State University mail set up and it uses Exchange (which is awesome). Could someone explain the process of "mounting" a hardware device? I know this refers to connecting and making available a hardware device, but what exactly is going on when such is happening? Finally, as I am new to the Mac OsX platform, what are some suggested programs in which I may consider investing time/money (word processors, spreadsheets, general computer maintenance programs, archivers, audio converters, anything of interest)? So far I have had one day with my Mac and, although I still must rely on my dell for important work while I learn the platform, I can easily envision myself straying further and further from WIndows as time progresses. I am glad this list exists, as it is a definitive and helpful community regarding Apple accessibility in general and contains a wealth of information on such. I appreciate every one of you willing to contribute and I hope to one day do the same:) Sincerely, RObert Hooper hooper...@buckeyemail.osu.edu P.S. This is being sent from my Mac's Mail program:) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: some general question
Hello Robert, I too am just getting started, but can take a stab at a couple of your questions: Control+Option+shift+m brings up a context menu. Alternatively you may want to set up a command for this on the trackpad commander. You can quickly ascertain the time by double tapping with two fingers near the top of the trackpad and then tap with one finger near the upper right corner. I'll defer to others to cover your remaining questions. HTH. Me and my KNFB Reader Woos
Listers, How do I install the KNFB Reader software using the Mac? I don't have a screen reader package on the phone so this may make it doublely hard! Any help is appreciated!
