Hi Teresa; Sorry I didn't get to this until now, but I'm hoping I caught you before you've taken the drastic step of archiving and reinstalling Mail.
I've seen this problem before and I solved it by going into the Mailboxes menu and choosing the 'rebuild' option. this may take a few minutes but it should take care of your issue.
