Dave,

Is there not an export option within outlook 2k7 that lets you create an
archive file in a mail format?

Thanks. I'm surprised nobody apart from seemingly TB can import Outlook
mail. You'd think Apple would have an Outlook importer that could just look
at a .pst and import the lot! Oh well!

At least I know I can do it.

Thanks

You can have thunderburd export as mbox format and mail will import those
very nicely. I've had to do it before through tb. I googled an article on
how to do it and that was the best free way to do it.

Microsoft Office 2011 and VoiceOver

2010-09-26 Thread Greg Kearney
It is my sad duty to report that after getting a chance to test Microsoft
Office 2011 for Mac that it is no more accessible in this version than in any
of the previous versions. As in the past it is impossible to interact with any
of the content areas of the program. You are not able to review, read or edit
the text area in Word or Excel.

It should not be clear to all that Microsoft has no intention of ever fixing
these issues. I communicated directly with Microsoft over the same failing in
Office 2008. The fact that after a complete rewire of the programs they remain
inaccessible to the built in screen reader of the OS to me speak volumes about
Microsoft's total lack of commitment to accessibility on the Macintosh platform
and may well speak to Microsoft's general commitment to the platform as well.

Re: transferring ms outllok mail to apple mail

2010-09-26 Thread Dave Taylor

 Hi,

The key is to know what Apple Mail will import from since Outlook just
lists programs it can export to. However, I found a great utility at
www.techit.com called Save 4 Mac which does exactly what I want, for
mail, calendars and contacts. Pity my Outlook went on strike though!

Accessibility of PDF files

2010-09-26 Thread Scott Howell
Sorry if you are receiving this twice.

I wanted to asked you folks who are Mac users if you have found a means to edit
PDF files or complete PDF forms. If so, I would be interested in hearing from
you. I am not referring to taking a PDF file and converting it to another
format first, I am instead referring to editing the PDF itself. I gather that
Adobe has no plans to make their products accessible to blind/visually impaired
Mac users. I am exploring another avenue, but wanted to provide the developers
with some level of interest. To avoid cluttering the list, please send me a
message off list at scottn3...@gmail.com. I will compile the count and let
folks know if interested. This of course is no guarantee anything will happen,
but the more interest just means more effort would likely be invested.

THanks,

Re: Authenicating in Apple Mail

2010-09-26 Thread Marketoe Day

Tim and Jeffrey,

I believe I have resolved the password authentication issue in Apple Mail with
the guidance you each provided. I am using an imap account associated with my
former university, which does indeed require SSL . Per your suggestions, I
explored the account preferences and made a simple change under SSL
authentication from Kerberos to simply password. This small change seems to
have resolved the issue. Again, thank you for helping to point me in the right
direction.

  Hi,

Is your iMap account through your ISP or through your employer? I've not
seen iMap like GMail have Kerberos issues. That's not normal behavior. I
agree with Jeffrey's suggestion to take a look in your Account settings within
Mail preferences. Some iMap accounts require SSL which, when configured
appropriately, will fix that sort of issue.

I am constantly travelling and having to take my hard disks around just

If anyone has had a good experience, please do share.

Oh, any negative experiences also appreciated :)

easier to set up. Its only drawback is accessing it from your same LAN that
it's on, you do the transfer over the Internet, not oer your LAN. Unless, of
course, you install an after-market version of samba or other networking
thingy. I enjoy mine and would buy it again. Uh, wait. I did. And, the web
portal is very accessible, as is the Pogoplug app for the iPhone and Mac. And
Windows, too.

Re: pairing a braillenote with the mac?

2010-09-26 Thread Scott Howell
Isaac,

You can perform the pairing via SYstem Preferences as you discovered and then
use the Braille tab in the VOiceOver Utility (vo-f8) to add the device via
bluetooth. If you have performed these steps, please advise. In fact if you
would tell me which display you have, its age, and any other details about it,
I would really appreciate this information. I have had a problem paring a new
Brailliant 40 and I have an open report with APple. I would like to know all
the steps including the info about the display, so that I may include it if
appropriate.
Please contact me off list if you prefer.

Thanks,

Women In Technology New Tech Doctor podcast

2010-09-26 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

There is a brand new Tech Doctor podcast called "Women In Technology" at
http://www.dr-carter.com

In this episode, Robert and three female guests explore some of the most
important issues concerning what it is like for women who work in technology.
Blindness may be more of an obstacle than gender.

I am confident that this podcast will be of interest to all women and men who
care about blindness, women's issues and technology.

Check it out.

RE: Microsoft Office 2011 and VoiceOver

2010-09-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Greg,

Thank you so much for providing this info.

I cannot begin to relay how sad and disappointed I am at the news of
Microsoft's Office 2011 VoiceOver inaccessibility.

Wow!

You know, when I installed the very first beta of Windows 7, it was
completely accessible. That is to say, as soon as one launched the
installation program for Windows 7, a very clear voice prompt asked if audio
assistance was required. This came as a total surprise to me, to say the
least. I answered in the affirmative and was able to install Windows 7
without any sighted assistance, whatsoever. I installed that first beta on
three of my computers. By the way, the voice that was used to guide me
through the setup was not that of Narrator--it was much clearer.

Astonishingly, with the release of the next beta of Windows 7, this feature
was removed. I was shocked, disappointed, and angry, to say the least.

It was then that I began considering purchasing a Macintosh.

It's been much too long to recall how I came to learn Microsoft's reason for
removing this feature but they said they removed it for security concerns;
to which I exclaim, "TommyRot!" Or, to put it in the vernacular,
"That's a load of crap"

Greg, is it possible that the final release of Office 2011 will be VoiceOver
accessible? I mean, you reviewed a beta, did you not? Perhaps I'm just
grasping at straws, eh? (Smile)

Thanks again for giving us a proverbial "heads-up" on this one.

Most Sincerely,

mark

It is my sad duty to report that after getting a chance to test Microsoft
Office 2011 for Mac that it is no more accessible in this version than in
any of the previous versions. As in the past it is impossible to interact
with any of the content areas of the program. You are not able to review,
read or edit the text area in Word or Excel.

It should not be clear to all that Microsoft has no intention of ever fixing
these issues. I communicated directly with Microsoft over the same failing
in Office 2008. The fact that after a complete rewire of the programs they
remain inaccessible to the built in screen reader of the OS to me speak
volumes about Microsoft's total lack of commitment to accessibility on the
Macintosh platform and may well speak to Microsoft's general commitment to
the platform as well.

Re: Help with Fission.

Figured out Amadeus. 2 minutes of looking at that program yielded the results I
needed. If I set spacebar to rewind, then use left and right brackets in
conjunction with shift, it looks like I can make my selections. Awesome. Looks
like I can use this just like I did with soundforge on windwos. Fantastic.

Mac mini I would be interested in selling 2008 model very little use

2010-09-26 Thread James Mannion
I hope it is ok to post a message on this list to get a message out to
people and I will handel further correspondence offline. Please send
me email at mannion...@gmail.com if interested or with further
questions. I have a mac mini purchased in June of 2009 that was the
2008 model. At that time it was the one just prior to the one that
came out right in that timeframe of June of 2009. It has had very
little use as I learned it and tried it out and decided it wasn't
productive enough for me to do what I do on the PC. Mainly web
accessibility is just not up to my preferred standards in my opinion.
I have all the original accessories and books that came with it,
including the monitor adapter, the front row remote, of course the
power cord, Snow Lepard with original media and book as well as the
original Tiger media and book. I also have a low profile Apple
keyboard purchased at the same time. I am interested in selling it for
$200 plus shipping. It is also in its original box. I am selling it
because it is sitting here and I could use the money.

Thanks for your consideration and plese contact me if interested at
mannion...@gmail.com

RE: Microsoft Office 2011 and VoiceOver

2010-09-26 Thread M. Taylor
I fear that you are correct, Scott; that is, if the Beta of Office 2011 is
not VoiceOver accessible it probably won't be in the final release. What a
shame.

With regard to iWorks, you bring up an interesting point.

Said point being, when is the next version of iWorks slated to be released?
As yet, I have not purchase any word processing package for my Mac in
anticipation of the release of Office 2011. Since that's a no go, iWorks it
will have to be. I hope iWorks is going to be released sometime soon.

2010-09-26 Thread Kevin Reeves
Oh man. Tiger? No wonder it wasn't up to your standards. I encourage you to get
a copy of Snow leopard and give that a shot. Comparatively, Tiger is slow and
clunky. Apple really figured web accessibility out in Snow leopard with the
introduction of the web rotor. Not trying to discourage you, but just wanted to
invite you to give it another shot with newer software that would benefit you
greatly. Or, if it doesn't work, just run bootcamp and slap windows on it. Just
some thoughts.

MacSpeech\Dragon Dictate

2010-09-26 Thread Colin M
Hi All!
I've got Mac speech but as yet not got it up and running!
I've been sent an opportunity to upgrade to the new Dragon dictate for Mac!
I'm writing to the list to see if any of you use either software and ask if it
is as good as they claim!
I have not heard any one on the list talk about it so I was wondering if anyone
actually use it!
Any advice welcome!
Yours sincerely

Well, it may be issues with support as well as development. Remember we also
have access to OOo, which is accessible. Barring that, you could always install
Debian within a BM and use the GO.OO.org version which is nincluded in the
distribution.

Re: pairing a braillenote with the mac?

2010-09-26 Thread Isaac Obie
Scott,
We did perform these steps.. I have the braillenote mpower bt18 and it's one of
the last units built. It has the updted braille display with the metal cursor
routing buttons. It paired, but it didn't hold it.
If you want to discuss off list you need to send me your email.

  Thanks,

Re: Microsoft Office 2011 and VoiceOver

2010-09-26 Thread Mike Arrigo
I don't think he said it was a beta. It is very disappointing indeed, really,
Microsoft has no excuse for this one, it's not like they were not aware of
accessibility and voice over, they just chose not to do anything with it. Apple
has created a built in screen reader and provided the APIs to make programs
accessible, Microsoft has definitely shown their interest in this. At least on
the mac, there are alternatives that will handle Microsoft Office files, namely
iwork and open office.

Hi Mark, have you tried open office for the mac, it's not perfect, but it does
work reasonably well, also, iwork 09 is quite accessible, though it's probably
not worth spending any money on that since 10 is probably around the corner.

I bet that if they tried, they would soon realise that the ribbons would be
difficult if not impossible to implement with VO anyway. As it is, their
insistence on these awful things is one of my key drivers for making the
switch, though there are many others too. Mike, the podcast where you
install Snow Leopard is as good a demonstration as anything of how far
things have come on the Mac side, I'm afraid it is the opposite story,
almost the reverse story, on the windows side!

Some stuff I did with pro tools.

2010-09-26 Thread Kevin Reeves
Hey folks. Just wanted to throw out a quick link to a file containing 2 jingles
I just completed with Pro Tools 8, now accessible with Voiceover. I invite you
to take a listen. All the sequencing, tracking, editing, mixing, and mastering
was done in Pro Tools. A great deal of the sounds used were instruments that
shipped with Pro Tools, except for the guitars and drums found in the MyMac
Theme. Hope you guys enjoy these.

Hi Isaac,

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is having this problem. I thought I was doing
something wrong. I can't wait for my Braillino. I will post if it pairs easily
and holds the pairing after I get it. Thank you again.

Re: pairing a braillenote with the mac?

2010-09-26 Thread Isaac Obie
Alllison,
My braillino pairs easily and it holds the pairing nicely! We have no trouble
with that one. It's the braillenote that we have trouble with. But you know the
braillino has these tripple action keys? those drive me nuts at times. I don't
like them. I wanted to pair the braillenote to see how it works. I may have to
call HumanWare on this one.
You will need to use your computer to load files on the braillino. so if you
want to take it with you to the doc's office, you will have to load the files
beforehand. So good luck with it!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is having this problem. I thought I was
doing something wrong. I can't wait for my Braillino. I will post if it pairs
easily and holds the pairing after I get it. Thank you again.

  Isaac,

You can perform the pairing via SYstem Preferences as you discovered and
then use the Braille tab in the VOiceOver Utility (vo-f8) to add the device via

  Thanks,

Hi Isaac,

THank you so much for your reply. I found that with the BrailleNote, you need
to turn bluetooth on first, and then put it in to terminal mode. After that is
completed, try pairing it again. THis is the only way I found that works.
Unfortunately, the display on mine is going, and the battery is too. It
requires a reset, now it won't pair at all. Some of the HumanWare staff have
Macs. THey were very helpful when I called. Would you mind letting me know what
happens? I'd be interested to see if you get the BrailleNote to work. THank you
again for all the great information about the Braillino. I will hopefully have
mine tomorrow. Have a great evening.

Re: pairing a braillenote with the mac?

2010-09-26 Thread Isaac Obie
Hi allison,
I was wondering if because my braillenote is part of the dbc(deaf-blind
communicator) had anything to do with the lack of pairing. I didn't know you
had to put it in terminal mode. I'll try that next when the teacher and I have
time. He's trying to get me setup to do email now. Hopefully, we'll be able to
do this real soon.
Your braillino has four nicad batteries. You can change your own batteries and
your own software. but you have no speech! It has an olboard manual just like
the braillenote, but not quite as intrusive. But you'lll enjoy it probably. All
the best and I'll let you know if I can pair that braillenote dbc.
Thanks.

Erik,

Yes you could always install Debian etc. However, that should not be necessary.
OO does work reasonably well, but iWorks suite is also quite accessible and I
am hoping the next version will be even more accessible. I am not sure Mark
when it will be out, but I gather sometime in the next couple of months.

Re: Help with Fission.

2010-09-26 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Kevin,

Yes AMadues is similar in a lot of ways to Sound Forge. I have Sound Forge on
my HP Desktop and love it. RInger is an program used to create ringtones. You
can download a demo version. I did a podcast on Ringer. You can check it out at:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2810328/ringerpodcast.mp3
You are in the right place if you decide to get Amadues, or if you have it
already. THere are so many people who know much more about this great program.
A lot more than I do, smile. Well, have a great day.

Musically,
Allison

Re: pairing a braillenote with the mac?

2010-09-26 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Isaac,

Thank you for the great info about the Braillino I may have more questions for
you I hope you wouldn't mind One of the reasons I chose the Braillino is that
it runs on triple A batteries. I think that is amazing! I think the
BrailleNote is a great piece of gear. It will be interesting to transition
from the BrailleNote to the Braillino. Oh wow, I had never thought about the
fact that the Braillino didn't have speech until you mentioned it. It almost
seems to me as if the BrailleNote sees the Mac, pairs and then as soon as it is
switched out of terminal mode it forgets the pairing. It worked well for a few
days for me. I used it to read banjo tab. I hope you can set up your E-mail. It
is wonderful to be able to proofread your mail in Braille. I just love it. I
hope you are having a great evening.

Musically,
Allison

 Hi Charlie,

I forgot how to say hello in Hawaiian. When you are in the App store, you
just search for Awareness. and VO right arrow to search. YOu can double
tap if you are on the Ipod or Iphone. It will say Headphone ap and have a
little description. I hope that helps. I love downloading things from the
Ap store. It will probably ask you for your password. You enter it, double
tap to okay and and it will ask you to agree with the Itunes terms and
conditions. I know most of you are probably wondering why I'm mentioning
this. For one reason, this is because when it came up on the Iphone, I
realized I had to swipe up twice till I came to the third page of the
agreement. Then there is an agree button. I say this because I wouldn't
wish you the same trouble I had. I hope this helps. Have a great day.

Renaming Mac Desktop Volumes

2010-09-26 Thread Marketoe Day

The folder or volume on my desktop, which once read "Mac HD", no longer has any
title/label. I am not certain what caused this to happen, which makes it more
complex to correct. Does anyone have any ideas what I may have done and/or
what steps should be taken to correct the problem?

Thanks!

Re: Renaming Mac Desktop Volumes

2010-09-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Marketoe,

The HD is just like any other item on the Desktop and can be renamed by
navigating to it, pressing return which will make it editable, then retyping
Macintosh HD as the name for the volume. This could be accidentally done as
well if you have the HD selected then press the return key on it. Another
method to rename an item is to select it, press cmd-i to Get Info on it, then
navigating to the Name and Extension field and renaming it from there.

getting mail to stop saying "Thread."

2010-09-26 Thread Kevin Reeves
Hey folks. In mail, I have all my messages grouped by thread. On one of these
machines, I was able to get vo to stop saying "Thread" every time it encounter
one in mail. I somehow got it to just say "Collapsed" and "Expanded." However,
I can't remember how I did it so I can duplicate that on the laptop. I already
know it's a thread if it says collapsed. Just that word alone slows me down

Re: How To Get VoiceOver To Automatically Read Messages in Apple Mail

2010-09-26 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Mark,

I had listened to your pod cast sufficiently well. There was a
missing item in things that need to happen, and even after that not
all items in mail will read immediately after they are opened in a
separate window.

The item that you were missing is in the Voice Over Utility.

If you uncheck (as is the default)
"Automatically select items in lists and tables." then the automatic
reading never works in addition, any "RSS" items in mail appear to
never read automatically using your method.

Just as an FYI since I believe MIke mentioned it, having the preview
pane on / off does not make a difference in automatic reading
according to my tests.

Best wishes,

Jon

It would be interesting to test the new version of Office with Dragon

dragon paws into the text?

Good night,
