Re: routers
Mike, you're totally in my wheel house here let me give you some pointers. I've had the DLink DIR-655 for home use for several years now and been happy and I'm not easily impressed. the upsides are that the draft N is very good if you use their adapters. It works ok with the Mac although I can't figure out yet how to see what my wireless bandwidth is negotiated at but with Windows I was able to negotiate at least to 150 mb/s with the cheesy Intel adapters. Spend the money on the DLink matching set and you get 300 solid and HD works very well as well as mixed VOIP, video and gaming. I used a 100 megabit down 25 megabit up connection and it was one of the few routers that had the forwarding rate to keep up. If I were you I'd check out the 855 which is the latest model. This interoperates with Intel much better and has really good processing so your QOS and advanced features work perfectly. (you should use these) Don't cheap out on your router especially if you have a decent connection. Mine was just bumped to 150 and I'm only now considering an upgrade and it's been 3 years which is stunning for me considering I change gadgets like clothes. Do * Not * Use * Linksys. (and I know you do from your podcasts). These suck, there's no nice way to say this. Cisco products for the most part bite the big one and Linksys is Cisco. The forwarding rates are pitiful frequently less than 10 megabits reliably. The only really good thing is with an older WRT54G or similar you can flash your own linux kernel and your experience improves dramatically. Let me know if you want to hear more about dd-wrt or tomato which are replacements operating systems. If you're up for some adventure I can't highly suggest you go to ebay and buy some used enterprise gear. Juniper has some exciting stuff and even Cisco's mid range gear can be such overkill for the home user but a great tool for teaching yourself network concepts or even building a home lab. I use all sorts of gear in a home lab which really makes it easy to stage experiments with out testing them in the production environments at work. Juniper is where it's at though. Probably steep out of pocket but oh so worth your time or anyone elses interested in learning. Any JunOS device is good for the home lab because you learn JunOS on a firewall you know it on a router and switch, it's all the same. Something like an SRX100 or 210, 240 is you have some bean but want 16 gigabit ports that go line rate. At my office I use a 10 member ex4200 bundle distributed around a building with 10G links and access chassis of the same gear usually 10 members using 128G and 10G all OSPF with no spanning tree. It gets really crazy but you can start learning how to function in these environments for a few hundred bucks. You can spend from under $100 on up so let us know how far you want to go with this. Also, on any level, ebay is your friend save the money, the ressession is a good thing if you're working.:) Sorry for the typos, I'm writing this while on a light jet headed back to CA after a kick ass vacation. Oh capchas, DLink in their later firmware installs with the capcha disabled, they play nice with the VI community. There was a few versions of firmware that had this enabled out of the box but I and a few others compained and they changed that to disabled on factory defaults. Airport is wanky though when interoperating with other non Apple gear. If you have Apple that's probably fine but want to use anyting else, especially Intel or DLink you better get a standards compliant device. Re: routers
Hi! Actually, my Linksys tends to drop my connection after a while, and I'm forced to restart it. Otherwise, when connecting I'll get a connection timeout. This only happens maybe twice within a month, and I'm not able to connect through the web interface either despite it being the right password. I find that very unappealing, and I can't figure out why. I'd be very interested to try the Airport Express, quite honestly, to see how the utility works. RE: BlueAnt Q1 headset and iPad [was Re: iPhone: The Missing Manual]
Hi Esther, I'm not sure of the firmware version. whenI sinc the q1 with my mobile, which is a nokia n86, it says q1 v8. But doesn't say anything more. And I haven't been able to find the version command to have the device tell me. do you know of another / easy way to get the exact firmware version for the device? Can you give it a voice command to get the version, or is it written somewhere in the documentation? I know my ipad is up to date and it has no problems with my nokia. Thanks for any info you can provide. Cheers Simon From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionar...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Esther Sent: Wednesday, 8 September 2010 11:43 p.m. To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: BlueAnt Q1 headset and iPad [was Re: iPhone: The Missing Manual] Hi Simon, I replied earlier to your question about the BlueAnt Q1: "the BlueAnt Q1 can pair to the iPad and also relay VoiceOver (with the Firmware upgrade support of A2DP)." Which version of the firmware do you have installed? The first version to support VoiceOver is version 8.19. The current firmware version is 8.21. BlueAnt started putting the newer firmware into Q1 headsets manufactured after about November 2009, so some people who bought this device in January (in the States, directly from AT&T) said they did not have to install any firmware updates to have this work with VoiceOver. I had to update a BlueAnt Q1 headset purchased in November so that it could work with VoiceOver. It had firmware version 8.15. I know that I can hear VoiceOver on the BlueAnt Q1 with firmware updated to 8.21 on the iPad, on my iPod Touch 3G (only after the upgrade to iOS 4), and on the iPhone 4. I don't know about trying this out with Skype, since this is a headset I set up for someone else. On my iPod Touch I need to use my headset with Mic for other recording functions, so I don't know whether the Q1 works with Skype for microphone input over Bluetooth. And on the iPad, there's an internal mic, so you don't need to use the Bluetooth headset. Geoff Waaler is on this list, and provided a link to the Q1 firmware upgrade (on the viphone list), since otherwise you need to register at the BlueAnt site with your serial number to access a copy, and that requires sighted assistance. This has to be used on a Windows machine, and should update to the latest version of the firmware, even if that was the release for firmware 8.19. So bottom line is that you can hear VoiceOver through the Q1 for the iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G (upgraded to iOS 4), and iPad if you have firmware version 8.21 (and possibly even 8.19), but I don't know whether the iPad supports using the BlueAnt Q1 through Skype. HTH. And as far as I'm aware my Ipad is up to date with os version. Thanks for any help on this, If the q1 wont work, I'm keen to know what will, I did have a V1, but have lost it, and I want something to use with skype when out of the office. Moving track start points in Amadeus Pro
Hi guys. I have been unable to figure out how to change the start point of a track in a multitrack project in Amadeus Pro. To keep things simple, if I have two tracks both starting at zero and I want to make track 2 start at about 10 seconds how do I do this? Currently I am selecting the content I wish to move and cutting it from the project... playing the entire project through to 10 seconds, moving the insertion point to the play head and then pasting the content there. I have tried this by pasting into a third track, recording straight from the mic to this point. Every time I just get the content back at the zero start point. I've read pretty much everything I can but a lot of the documentation talks about it in terms of dragging with the mouse. Any ideas? Hello again, Whatever, then. They obviously fixed that, in that case. My point still stands, though, as it applies to either all other languages or most of them. Or course, I can't test all of them but by the sound of it, it's widely spread. And it's a pretty big concern. Perhaps not to people who use the English voices, perhaps, but for international users it's a pretty big issue unless you have a keyboard and don't think you need to delete, have a little sight to see what the heck you're writing or third...just take a chance when using the on-screen keyboard. Facebook iPhone app
Hi all. Just to let you know that the Facebook app seems to be more stable with VO. Whether it's something they've fixed in iOS 4.1 or Facebook itself I don't know, bbut it hasn't crashed on me yet. Also links seem to activate more consistently now when they are double tapped. Dannie -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi all. Can I search for a new line, and replace with a space, can I do it in pages, Nisus writer pro or text edit. I have to reformate 900 documents, and now I am doing it by going through every document, but that is a great job. Re: Can I search for new line and replace with a space and how can I do it.
Hello Annie, This should work in either TextEdit or Pages: • Find a New Line character: • Highlight it: • Copy it to the clipboard (Command-c); • Press Command-f to open a Find dialogue; • Paste the New Line character into the first field; • Enter a space in the Replace With field; • Navigate right to Replace all and press VO-Space bar. By navigating left you'll see how many New Line characters were replaced. Re: i o s 4.1 3g
Just... Remeber one thing. If you have a windows virtual machine running when you connect your iPhone, prepare for a really hard time fixing the iPhone, as it breaks the entire os if it's installing and the virtual machine connects it. If you have to use the virtual machine when updating your iPhone, go into the machine's settings, go to USB devices, and turn off the automatic connections of USB devices. The virtual machine also has to be shut down for you to go and modify the settings for it. Re: routers
This is common with linksys. Cisco has hacked code that uses pingers to determine connection state instead of using normal methods. These crash and take your router with it. Re: routers
Hi, Cisco does not do it well any more. Cisco has never provided wire rate interfaces, not even on their high end service provider gear. It's very common for example for Cisco gigabit interfaces to only forward at 200 - 300 megabits sustained assuming normal packet sizes. Linksys is no exception on the consumer side. I have no dog in this race, I don't make money if you go one way or another but I do have 20 years of experience and I'll tell you what works and what doesn't. In my last gig I worked for a time on CPE evaluation and tested all these devices in real world settings as well as the lab. Linksys just doesn't get it done, doesn't have the stability and definitely doesn't forward for sh*t. Older linksys gear can be reflashed with much better firmware but for the purposes of this discussion the out of box Cisco provided code sucks the big one. why use ringer instead of just creatin g ringtones in itunes?
Hi all, If I'm understanding this correctly, the only new limitation has to do with songs purchased in iTunes. If that's correct, why are people using Amadeus and Ringer rather than just editing the song and creating the ringtone in itunes? Just curious as to whether there's some advantage that I'm missing. :) Best, Donna -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Cause I can create a fancy fade out and in. Also I can't go in at let's say 15.5 seconds and come back out of the excerpt at 45.5 seconds. I tried that so amadeus is more a good idea for me and it will export it directly to itunes with out me having to add the m4r extension. Re: itunes and file tagging
Hi Paul, The easiest solution for you would be to create a playlist for your audiobook files, and then play the audiobook from the playlist. iTunes adds information based on mp3 tag information in the files. If there are no tags, it tries to add information based on the name of the files, which it will use for track names. So if you add tracks to your library like 001.mp3 that have no tag information, they will be filed in the iTunes database under Unknown Artist and Unknown Album but with a track name of 001. This is obviously an issue if you want to import lots of audiobooks that all lack album and artist information and are all named 001.mp3 etc. So one way to fix this is to add this information when you import the files via the "Get Info" command (shortcut Command-I) using the "Info" tab to fill in the Artist (author) and Album (book title), which is the minimal information you need to supply. Again, just as with using the "Option" tab to change "Media Kind" from music to audiobook, you can select multiple files, and make these editing changes once for all the tracks you have selected. The easy way to find items that you've just added to the iTunes library which do not have tags is to navigate to the "Recently Added" smart playlist in the sources table. (By the way, I haven't upgraded to iTunes 10 yet, so my instructions are based on using the last version of iTunes 9, and I assume this hasn't changed in its essentials.) In the sources table of iTunes, in addition to entries for the various libraries (Music, Books, Podcasts, etc.), iTunes Store entries (iTunes Store, Purchased playlist, etc.), shared libraries (if you have this feature turned on and are on a network with other machines that have separate iTunes libraries), and playlists, there will be a few "smart playlists" that iTunes creates. The "recently added" smart playlist will contain all tracks that you've added to your iTunes Library in the past two weeks, that are not podcasts (from subscription). If you navigate to the "Recently Added" playlist in your sources table and highlight it (after the usual manner of interacting with the table, then pressing the first few letters of the playlist name (e.g. "r e c"), or by using your up and down arrow keys to navigate (or, alternatively, you could use item chooser menu with VO-I to located the playlist), then navigate to the songs table (now renamed under iTunes 10, I'm told) and interact, you'll be able to find all your recent imports, probably listed in the order they were added. For any track in the songs table you can check its location with Command-R, which is a shortcut for "Show in Finder". This brings up a Finder window with the selected track highlighted. You can check that the track conforms to your file organization system under Finder, then Command-Tab to switch applications back to iTunes. Select all the tracks you want to tag. These are likely to be ordered contiguously, so all you need to do is start with the first track in the list, press the shift key, and arrow down to the end of the entries to select them all. Then bring up the Get Info window with Command-I. iTunes will ask you whether you want to edit multiple entries. Just go ahead and agree that you do. Navigate (VO-Right arrow) to the "Info" tab and select it (VO-Space) in order to enter the tagging information. VO- Right arrow to the text fields for "Album" and "Artist" and type in the title of the book and the author. You can add any other information you want, such as comments in the comments text box, or the narrator under "Composer". I usually set the "Genre" pop up button to "Books & Spoken" but this can be anything you want to type in, or you can leave it blank. If you want to set these up as audiobooks, by navigating to the "Options" tab and selecting (with VO- Space), you can also set the "Media Kind" pop up to "Audiobook" and navigate to the checkboxes for "Remember Playback Position" and "Skip when Shuffling" and check them with VO-Space. I usually just press return when I'm done and escape to cancel, but you can navigate to the buttons for these functions and press then with VO-Space. You've now successfully tagged all your audiobook tracks, and if you also edited "Media Kind" on the "Options" tab, you've put these tracks into "Books" instead of "Music." I think that by default the "Books" playlist is no longer displayed in new iTunes 9 setups, nor are "Apps" for iPhone users. To change this you need to bring up iTunes preferences with Command-Comma. I would make two changes from the defaults of iTunes 9 (sorry, don't know the iTunes 10 set up): 1. Under the iTunes preferences menu you brought up with Command- Comma, navigate to the "General" tab and check (VO-Space) the boxes of any playlist you want displayed (like "Books", "Apps", "Ringtones", or "iTu
Cannot get an Apple bluetooth keyboard to pair with my Mac, but it'll pair with my iPod touch?

Hi! Try turning the keyboard off, then back on. When a device first connects to it, it turns off "Discoverable" so other devices will not see it. Re: Moving track start points in Amadeus Pro
Hi, You're right, the podcasts and tutorials found on operating Amadeus Pro with VoiceOver, are about working with one track mono or stereo material. You are told to totally stop interacting with the scroll bar and focus on the scroll bar itself with all cursors. This may help when you do a single track mono or stereo track, but as soon as you are working with more than one track, you should interact with the scroll bar and focus on the specific track you want to edit, and then press escape. It doesn't matter if you just stop the play head or use markers, as long as you move the insert point to the play head or marker, or use the selector window to make your selection. You should now be able to place the content you have in the clipboard to any position you like. Re: Cannot get an Apple bluetooth keyboard to pair with my Mac, but it'll pair with my iPod touch?
HI! turning bluetooth off disconnects it, so that's fine. The only reason your Mac shouldn't see it is if it is not in discovery mode. This mode only turns off when another device connects from it, and the only way to turn it back on is by turning off the keyboard then back on again. Make sure nothing connects to it automatically, though, so just turn off bluetooth on the Touch. there are certified Apple Resalers who will reconfigure a stock Apple machine for you. I believe Choice 1 Media? is one. just an example, not a recommendation. VO J not working in new ITunes, any alternatives?
Hi everyone. Since upgrading to the latest ITunes a few days ago, I have noticed that I can no longer use VO-J to jump from the sources table to the list of songs. Arrowing around is a bit tedious, so I was wondering if anyone out there had another solution for me or could at least explain why my formerly handy VO-J no longer works. Thanks very much in advance for any insights. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi, Tedious? You would only have to press VO left or right 2 times to get from one table to the other. :). That just one more key press than control J. but, you can also press VO command T to jump from sources table to songs table. hth On Sep 9, 2010, at 8:12 PM, Lynn Schneider wrote: > Hi everyone. Ah, You either have the playlist browser on which is command B to toggle on and off ore your not using list view, (which I recommend) which is command option 3 on all your playlist in the sources table. hth On Sep 9, 2010, at 8:31 PM, Lynn Schneider wrote: > Thanks very much for your help. Help forcing Mac to recognize a USB device
Dear list, I recently purchased a Milestone 312, developed by BONES INC. I have a love hate relationship with this device. It is a USB device that preforms many functions including voice recording, general recording, Daisy book reading, clock, FM radio, agenda, and labeling. It uses a SD card and internal memory. My current problem is that when I plug the USB cable into the Mac it usually does nothing at all. A few times when I first attached it it did recognize the SD Card and the internal memory as two separate volumes. When recognized I navigate them in the finder. But most of the time either the usb connection is ignored or it is recognized and then almost immediately I get the message that the device was ejected incorrectly. Can anyone help me have the Mac recognize the USB device and not eject it automatically? I think the device is treated like a card reader and possibly others have found ways to force these devices to be recognized when they don't initially show up. Help and advice wanted. I've heard some routers use a capcha now to get in to their configurations, that is nuts. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Help forcing Mac to recognize a USB device
Hi eric: You can indeed probably do this. It can be done by going into disk utility. You'll want to find that and look for the option to "mount." (strange name for an interface) but basically it allows you to connect devices that are going unrecognized. I fixed my victor stream quite accidentally with about as much of a clue as that. Good luck. Carolyn On Sep 9, 2010, at 8:52 PM, Eric Caron wrote: > Dear list, > > I recently purchased a Milestone 312, developed by BONES INC. I have > a love hate relationship with this device. Re: Can I search for new line and replace with a space and how can I do it.
Hi Anne and Annie, Very ingenious Anne although there is an easier way that should work fine as well both in Pages and TextEdit. Using your Option key along with the return key in the first field will yield the same result. That is: • Open your find dialog. • Navigate to the Find What field. • Press the option key and return key simultaneously. • Follow Anne's wonderful instructions for the rest and you're set. This method will also work for other invisible characters such as the tab key. HTH. Later...
