RE: A Question Regarding MS Office for Mac

2010-04-26 Thread Bryan Smart
Well, for those of us that use Exchange for information management, we'd sure
like to be able to run a version of Outlook on the Mac. Mail and ICal can get
to some of that info on an Exchange server, but not all of it. Right now, if
you want to change a server-side e-mail filtering rule, for example, you must
start Outlook in a virtual machine or under BootCamp to make that adjustment.

I also don't think that Pages supports all of the formatting options of Word.
That isn't so important when you're making your own files, but it matters when
you're exchanging files with other people that are using Word.

So, Office isn't essential, but many of us would appreciate it.

Leaving List

2010-04-26 Thread Chris Hofstader

Hi,

With my new job as Director of Access Technology for Project GNU/Free
Software Foundation, I am so busy that I can hardly keep up with work
let alone follow these lists.

I thank you all for the help you have given me over the past two years
since I got my first MacBook and I hoped I helped some of you kids too.

Because of a super secret accessibility project happening on the iPhone
(it's not a blindness/low vision solution) I will remain on the viphone
list. If you write to me directly, I'll tell you about the project if
you are interested in concepts involving aging in place and other
technology for elders with some minor cognitive impairments. (It's not
really a secret.)

As always, anyone can write to me directly just to say "hi" or to ask
about GNU/LInux stuff.

Happy Hacking,
cdh

Seems a lot of money to spend if you only need those few extra options.
Besides, it'll probably happen even for iWork, Mail and iCal. I'm such an

jumping to cursor position in a text area

Hi Listers,

This is maybe a silly question, but don't find any voice over command to do
this.
When you are in a textarea and reading with a refreshable brailledisplay, is
there a way to jump back to the cursor position?
Specially in a terminal this thing should be very handy.
Hope someone can give me a hint / tip. :)

iTunes and speakers and voice over

2010-04-26 Thread marie Howarth
Hi guys,

I have used audio highjack for the question I'm about to ask. However, it is
difficult to get the effects area up to higjack iTunes through my external
speakers.

Here's what I want. I like listening to music while I'm chatting or studying
and so like to have voice over go through my USB headset. But the music can be
distracting so as with Audio highjack I could highjack the audio from iTunes to
go through my external speakers, is there another way to do this or does anyone
have any tips on how I can get this to work in audio highjack? I try to route
the mouse cursor to the scroll area and click with vo-shift-spacebar but
nothing happens. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Marie

Re: updating Zoom

2010-04-26 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi Donna,

When you interact with the "Backwards" group, you go all the way to the right.
Vo-End should also work. You should see an HTML item, and that will show the
website when interacting. You can search games, log in to your account on the
database, and all the other features including downloading games directly to
Zoom.

Re: switching from windows, some questions?

2010-04-26 Thread Chris Blouch
Didn't notice a direct answer to this. Adium is a chat application where
you can connect to another chat user and then type messages back and
forth in real time. There are a number of chat services like AIM or MSN
Messenger which have their own clients but Adium is more universal in
that it connects to numerous different services. Of course you will need
to create an account on each of those to use it with more than one.

Hi all,

I a very new mac and voice over user, I just had some questions.

First, about mail. I have not set up mail yet, as I wanted to ask
some advice. I have a Gmail account, and know from reading, that
you may set up Gmail to work in apple mail using either pop or
imap, I just wondering, does it make a difference in terms of voice
over, whether I use pop or imap?

I don't think it does, Kerie. While I use IMAP with my Gmail
account, I have never heard anything to the effect that POP wouldn't
work.

Next, are the mail boxes which can be created in apple mail meant
to be used as substitutes for folders like those which can be
created in outlook using windows, say for lists? And if I
subscribed to many lists, can I, and do I, need to create rules so
the messages from lists go to the mail boxes, and don just go to my
inbox?

Mail lets you create mailboxes into which you can organize
materials. You can create rules to automatically have specific
messages placed in specific mailboxes or, alternatively, you can
manually move them to these mailboxes from the inbox.

Next, when it comes to instant messaging, can aidium connect to
windows live, or am I best installing windows live for Mac, which I
believe, correct me if I wrong, is available from Microsoft?

This was the question I couldn't answer.

And lastly, for now, is there a way to find out the title of a
window, like in jaws for windows?

Kerie, using the Voice Over keys (Command Option) along with F2
tells you the title of the window that you are currently in. This
command works very well in the Mail program.

I hope you all won mind me asking what could be considered by some
as silly questions, but like I say, I very new to apple and voice
over, so just thought someone might give me some advice.

Thanks for any help in advance,

Kerie

Kerie, the more I use the Mac, the more I like it! I hope that you
have a similar experience.

Best regards,

Mike

Not that DisplayPort isn't just an Apple thing. The industry is
generally moving away from DVI and HDMI to display port so Apple is just
ahead of the curve (as usual).

Re: updating Zoom

2010-04-26 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

The games save automatically. When downloading a game, you they are listed in a
table.

To download a game, you hit the link that says the filetype, like .gam, and
some might just say Story File.

The plugins should allow you to play most types.

Re: iTunes and speakers and voice over

2010-04-26 Thread phil stephenson
Hi,

No doubt others can comment on this but I have heard of an application called
"Airfoil" which can send other sound via airtunes to a set of external speakers
provided they are connected to an airport base station - not an ideal solution
I know and I don't know how accessible it is with VO but worth investigating, I
plan on looking at this type of solution myself too soon.

cheers,

Phil

weird VO thing

Hi all,

I just had the strangest thing happened. I was browsing on my Mac, and all of

Mac, hoping that VO would return to normal, but when I did, it had reset itself
to all the default settings. Anyone know what might have happened?

Re: weird VO thing

2010-04-26 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Thanks, Jim, Rick and Sarah, I didn't know you could export settings. This is
the first time I've encountered this problem, but I think I'll do a backup just
to be prepared, should the need arise again. :)

Also, think I'll dash off an email to accessibility, just to be sure they know
about the issue.
Best,
Donna

Re: weird VO thing

2010-04-26 Thread marie Howarth
I had this happen once but that was a while ago now. But something else that's
been happening a lot recently is VO just stops talking either when I'm typing
or switching between windows. I can easily cmd-f5 toggle several times to get
it to come back on but this really is getting annoying. Anyone else
experiencing this?

This kind of relates to downloading Youtube files, so how do I copy the U.R.L.
Once I find the video I want to convert, it asks for the URL, but I'm not sure

Re: weird VO thing

2010-04-26 Thread James & Nash
Hi Donna,

Go to your Preferences folder which you'll find in the Library Folder of your
Home folder. In that folder, you'll find a folder called com.apple.VoiceOver3.
Make a copy of this folder and put it somewhere. It contains all your
preferences.

VO resetting to its defaults has only happened to me once, but it's always
useful having a backup just in case.

Hi Sarah,

Sorry, I forgot to mention that - I've not used it for ages.

You can go to your address bar with Cmd + L and then press Cmd + C to copy the
highlight URL. Once you find the edit area for the URL on the site, press Cmd +
V to paste the URL into the box and then after choosing your preferred format,
press VO + Space on the "Start" button. Hopefully it will work for you.

What do you mean only to start windows? It's a virtualisation app. Of
course vo isn't going to be able to read the os your virtualising;
your going to have to use a windows screenreader.

2010-04-26 Thread David McLean
That's not what I'm talking about. The app isn't accessible except to start
Windows or whatever vm you're using.
With Vmware fusion the application interface, settings etc. are all accessible.
I'm not talking about the vm itself which of course you need a screenreader
for.

Re: -- SPAM -- parelells a complete waist of my time

2010-04-26 Thread Brent Harding
Yep, this old Macbook is frustrating me too, I want to boot camp it to run
some software I need in Windows and would like portable. All I get is that
stupid screen with the flashing cursor right when I put the CD in. There's
no apple store near here, and I don't know how to take out some ram as some
suggest as a solution. I reset the Pram, set my resolution to 800 by 600,
nothing seems to make this thing boot either of two XP disks I have. It's a
Macbook 4,1 according to the hardware info, 2.1 core 2 duo with 4 gb of ram,
trying to install an OEM disk of XP Pro I bought, the cursor comes up right
away and stays there. I'm thinking of putting the thing back on Ebay if I
can't find a solution as I want one machine that will do both Snow Leopard
and Windows, software for a net show I do requires Windows.

How do I fix this short of doing that?

Thanks.

It is completely inaccessible.
According to someone on the macaccess list it can be used once Windows has

Didn't notice a direct answer to this. Adium is a chat application where you
can connect to another chat user and then type messages back and forth in real

Hello Kerie,

While I can't answer your question about instant messaging, perhaps I
can help out with the others. Like several people I know, I use both Windows

  Hi all,

I a very new mac and voice over user, I just had some questions.

First, about mail. I have not set up mail yet, as I wanted to ask
some advice. I have a Gmail account, and know from reading, that you may set up
Gmail to work in apple mail using either pop or imap, I just wondering, does it
make a difference in terms of voice over, whether I use pop or imap?

I don't think it does, Kerie. While I use IMAP with my Gmail account, I
have never heard anything to the effect that POP wouldn't work.

Next, are the mail boxes which can be created in apple mail meant to
be used as substitutes for folders like those which can be created in outlook
using windows, say for lists? And if I subscribed to many lists, can I, and do
I, need to create rules so the messages from lists go to the mail boxes, and
don just go to my inbox?

Mail lets you create mailboxes into which you can organize materials.
You can create rules to automatically have specific messages placed in specific
mailboxes or, alternatively, you can manually move them to these mailboxes from
the inbox.

Next, when it comes to instant messaging, can aidium connect to
windows live, or am I best installing windows live for Mac, which I believe,
correct me if I wrong, is available from Microsoft?

This was the question I couldn't answer.

And lastly, for now, is there a way to find out the title of a
window, like in jaws for windows?

Kerie, using the Voice Over keys (Command Option) along with F2 tells
you the title of the window that you are currently in. This command works very
well in the Mail program.

I hope you all won mind me asking what could be considered by some as
silly questions, but like I say, I very new to apple and voice over, so just
thought someone might give me some advice.

Thanks for any help in advance,

  Kerie

Kerie, the more I use the Mac, the more I like it! I hope that you
have a similar experience.

Best regards,

Mike

I thought I had read on this list that you need sighted assistance to install a

Why don't you try Vmware Fusion?

I did and it slows down my system with windows. I have 2 gigs with 1 core

Take care.

Re: -- parelells a complete waist of my time

2010-04-26 Thread Brent Harding
Yes, and I plan to run Station Playlist through this once in awhile. Will I
get that classic audio drift where the sample rates drift, so Jaws will
sound like Darth Vador over time and get increasingly delayed? I know that
Ensonic audio driver was from the good old ISA card days, here I thought it
was a high-end brand as Patrick Perdue spoke of an effects unit made by
them. I can get someone to help me through the install of Windows, I just
can't make the thing like either XP CD I have on boot, it blinks with this
cursor like, I don't know what that thing is you stuck in my CD drive, but
I'm not going any further. The disk is good as if I put it in when in SL,
the volume shows and I can look at what's on an XP disk. Someone on a forum
said that because I have 4 gigs of ram, it is demanding 64-bit XP, why
didn't the description say something like "if you are going to boot camp
this machine, it must be nothing but 64-bit"? Is there a firmware setting I
could have someone change that would effectively remove one stick of ram as
the forums suggest? Then, they say to put the stick back in once installed.
I don't have the tools available that can open this thing, static straps to
not destroy the memory, etc.

According to someone on the macaccess list it can be used once Windows

Re: re-accessible dvd player apps

2010-04-26 Thread Darcy Burnard
Hi. In dvd player, when a disc is playing, you can use the go menu to get to
different parts of the dvd. There are options under there for title and
chapter. It takes a little trial and error to see which titles are what you
want. Under the controls menu, you can do things like pause, rewind, fast
forward, etc. There are shortcut keys for most of these.
