scan using image capture
hi all for those using OCR like finereader, you don't need vuscan. Just use image capture in applications and send the resulting file to the OCR program then after a scan it will autoopen the file and you can convert to text from there. Re: Safari won't let me go to Ebay?
Hi, Instead of remembering tons of URLs, why not just use Webkit? Webkit has fixed this issue a long time ago, including a lot of other ones that crashes the regular SAfari. Webkit is essentially the same, except the framework Safari uses is more up-to-date than the one Apple currently has in the present Safari version. In fact, you won't even notice it is Webkit, except it will occasionally run smoother. It looks just like Safari, because it is. The only thing you will notice is an update reminder when a new nightly build for Webkit is available, fixing more bugs. RE: multi select list boxes in safari
Hi Nick, I actually came across it when I was using the back-end to a drupal site I'm setting up. Basically I'd set up a taxonomy to categorise content, and rather than use free-tagging I used a list of 4 elements from which the user could select any/all. I've also seen something like this on a site .myhome.ie but it was a while ago so I'm not sure if they're using it at the moment. Re: Colored labels for folders?
Hi Ricardo, This is a way to mark your folders with a color. Currently, this is only something sighted people can benefit from. When I was sighted myself, I color labeled folders in genres, just like you define your music in iTunes in genres. Some people classifies their folders by priority, by putting a red label to the most important ones, yellow to middle important and green to normal folders. Other people use other colors for other categories. VoiceOver users could use this info if there was an option to have the color of a folder included in the description heard when it is selected, for example "Country lyrics, selected red folder", instead of "Country lyrics, selected folder". Re: multi select list boxes in safari
Hi, This is very interesting. I created my own multi-select listbox, and got some funny results. I opened it in Safari, and located it on my page. VoiceOver proceeded to read all the options in the box without pausing, and did not seem to register it as a listbox at all, but rather as a text element. I then hit down arrow, and it would say the item name, then "clickable selected". They seem to work, but you don't know when they are listboxes or not. Also, yes, you can select more than one by using regular selection keys. RE: IPhone 4, and IAds
Jess, I think that the ads API will actually be a good thing. Charlie has a point, even if he delivers it tactlessly. The time that is needed to make anything but the most basic apps requires money. The people that make the app either get the money back through selling you the app, giving you the app for free while charging you a small monthly service fee, or else get that money from advertisers. Particularly when making an app is complicated, but not many people will be expected to buy it because it is something that they only casually use, the only real way to support the programming labor is with ads. So, I think that lots of developers want to use ads in their apps. You know that that could get messy. Ads could become to intrusive, and they would certainly look different in every app. The ways that developers try to display them might conflict with VoiceOver. Until now, though, Apple hasn't really had any strong guidelines about what is acceptable for ads. I believe that, with this new ads mechanism, since Apple now is offering a standard way for an app to display ads, the ads portion of an application will be expected to use the standard adds mechanism. A developer's app will usually be rejected by the App Store if their app tries to re-implement some existing feature of the iPhone/iPad. This is so developers won't go changing the way that the interface looks, or trying to substitute areas of the OS that people already expect to work a certain way. So, they'll probably make all ads go through the new mechanism. Since there will only be one official way of displaying ads, I expect that this will cut down on many of the normal performance and security problems that people run in to with ads. It also would mean that they'd almost always be displayed in the same way, and they'll probably be accessible/readable with VO/not conflict with VO. I think that location services are part of this, also, so the ads can suggest services that are actually local to you. I actually don't mind ads, if they're useful. If they're advertising something nearby, or that is relevant to me and my likes, then they might tell me about something that I would actually use. Without the targeting information, they're just as likely to try to sell me home refinancing and Viagra. Now, that's annoying. lol. I think that, by forcing everyone to go through a standard service, Apple can make the ads better. They wouldn't need to mess up your device, they wouldn't need to frustrate you, and they could actually be useful information for you. Infovox voices licensing/copy protection?
Hi. I've thought about purchasing these voices, but I haven't been able to discover any details about how their licensing/protection works. I looked around the site, at their FAQ, and tried e-mailing their support a while back, but nothing. There are so many forms of copy protection, and I can deal with some, but extremely dislike others. I know that there are people on this list that use them, so would someone mind replying and briefly telling me what to expect? Do they give you a code that matches up with a single computer, so you can re-install on that machine as many times as needed? Do you need to check out and check in machine keys/authorizations/activations on their web site somehow? Do you need to activate online, and call/write/beg for additional activations if you re-install (AKA Windows, Jaws, etc)? Do they give you a code that allows multiple installs on any Macs that you have? Do they mail you a dongle? Any info would be appreciated. If I purchase them, and then discover that the protection doesn't suit, I'll probably not be able to get a refund, so I'd rather know in advance. Re: multi select list boxes in safari
Hi all. The multiselectboxes works in the following way: Turn off the cursor tracking by pressing VO shift f3, and then you can read the choices without selecting them. If you don't stop cursor tracking, you'll select each item as you read it. To select an item in the listbox, you simply press VO command spacebar, and VO will say "selected." You can then read what items you have selected by moving the Vo cursor up and down. Don't turn the cursor tracking on until you've pressed the "continue" or what ever button which will accept your choice in the listbox. I only have access to a multiselectlistbox in a mailinglist management system where you need to log in, so I can't give you a link so you can check it out. I really love the way VOiceover work which is the reason for multiselectlistboxes works out of the box. I've seen many Windows screenreaders having issues with these... RE: To all software developers, anyone know of a good development software for the Mac?
Hi. Jess is probably looking for something simple to use for learning programming concepts. For that, even Python would do. Python is built-in on the Mac. You can write Python scripts in TextEdit, and run them in the terminal. I wanted to let you, and others, know, though, that developing full desktop applications with XCode is accessible. The XCode development environment works extremely well with VoiceOver, even the parts that are usually a pain in other environments (like the debugger). Interface Builder, the tool that helps you to create the user interfaces of your program through a easy to use visual designer, isn't accessible. However, you can use my RenaissanceX system/dev kit to create user interfaces by describing what you want in a simple markup file that looks a lot like HTML. Re: multi select list boxes in safari
Hi, Good workaround. I still think they should be identified correctly, however, and not to be picky, but it shouldn't be necessary to have to do workarounds. Once they are properly identified, I'm sure it won't be necessary either. Re: iTunes server and iPod touch
Hi, You can not add content to your iPod from a network based iTunes server such as those used on NAS appliances, iTunes will only support adding content from your local library. The way I have resolved this on my own network is to just store the content on a central server, but have the library location pointing to my local hard drive. If you have multiple computers on your network you can use an app such as TuneRanger to keep your libraries in sync, so when you add new content to your file server and import it in to the local library, the library additions are replicated to other computers on the network. I hope this helps. Cheers, Mitch - Original Message - From: "Chris G" To: Sent: Sunday, April 11, 2010 9:37 AM Subject: iTunes server and iPod touch Hi, I have a netgear nas with 3TB in it. Hi, If you read further down that page, you will be guided through on how to get your normal homepage back. It is Safari. Webkit is just its underlying framework, and it is being updated regularly which is the benefit to using the actual engine.
