Jess, I think that the ads API will actually be a good thing. Charlie has a
point, even if he delivers it tactlessly. The time that is needed to make
anything but the most basic apps requires money. The people that make the app
either get the money back through selling you the app, giving you the app for
free while charging you a small monthly service fee, or else get that money
from advertisers. Particularly when making an app is complicated, but not many
people will be expected to buy it because it is something that they only
casually use, the only real way to support the programming labor is with ads.

So, I think that lots of developers want to use ads in their apps. You know
that that could get messy. Ads could become to intrusive, and they would
certainly look different in every app. The ways that developers try to display
them might conflict with VoiceOver. Until now, though, Apple hasn't really had
any strong guidelines about what is acceptable for ads.

I believe that, with this new ads mechanism, since Apple now is offering a
standard way for an app to display ads, the ads portion of an application will
be expected to use the standard adds mechanism. A developer's app will usually
be rejected by the App Store if their app tries to re-implement some existing
feature of the iPhone/iPad. This is so developers won't go changing the way
that the interface looks, or trying to substitute areas of the OS that people
already expect to work a certain way. So, they'll probably make all ads go
through the new mechanism. Since there will only be one official way of
displaying ads, I expect that this will cut down on many of the normal
performance and security problems that people run in to with ads. It also would
mean that they'd almost always be displayed in the same way, and they'll
probably be accessible/readable with VO/not conflict with VO. I think that
location services are part of this, also, so the ads can suggest services that
are actually local to you.

I actually don't mind ads, if they're useful. If they're advertising something
nearby, or that is relevant to me and my likes, then they might tell me about
something that I would actually use. Without the targeting information, they're
just as likely to try to sell me home refinancing and Viagra. Now, that's
annoying. lol.

I think that, by forcing everyone to go through a standard service, Apple can
make the ads better. They wouldn't need to mess up your device, they wouldn't
need to frustrate you, and they could actually be useful information for you.

Bryan

Neil, thanks for coming to my defense. Appreciate it, buddy. I did not
appreciate being told to grow up on list, just for voicing my opinion, and it's
rather nice to know that my opinion has somevalidity and that I'm not totally
off the wall for not wanting ads.
