To all software developers, anyone know of a good development software for the Mac?

2010-04-11 Thread Jess
I'm going to take an introduction to computer programming and logic this
summer, and the instructor knows I am blind and that I use voice over on the
Mac. HE also is a MAc user, and he will be teaching the class this summer. He
told me that the class would be using Alice, but I've looked at that program
and it doesn't appear to be all that useful. So, does anyone know of any intro
level software development programs that can help me get started to learn to
program that works with v o?
Thanks.

Why all the hostility on your part? Telling some one else on list that they
have to grow up just because they expressed their opinion shows a lack of

Apparently you haven't used apps like Syrinx or Twittero, they don't give
you any ads from Twitter or facebook. I realize that ads aren't going
away, but if I don't want to see an ad, I shouldn't have to be forced to
look at it. And by the way, leave the communist crap out of it.

Re: To all software developers, anyone know of a good development software for the Mac?

2010-04-11 Thread Philippe Brun
Hello Jess,
I think xCode with InterfaceBuilder is not accessible with VO. If you want to
learn programming without graphical interface, you can use a lot of langages.
The applications will run in the terminal. If you want to learn simple langage
with graphical interface, you can learn AppleScript. You will find a lot of doc
on the web.
Good luck

My scanner is a canoscan lide25 and has a very outdated twane driver which is
scangear starter 1.1e.

2010-04-11 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi Matthew!

If your scanner shows up on the mac you can use image capture to scan the
document, save it, then have Abbyy fineReader Recognize the file. It will ask
you "get image from: and file is an option there--or at least on the version I
had. I had an automater workflow at one time that would do both of those tasks
for you. If I can find it I'll post it here--if that's acceptable.

Re: extra voices

2010-04-11 Thread Slau Halatyn
InfoVox would probably be the best choice. I like the Cepstral voices as well
but they appear not to work too well with VoiceOver, at least for me. From what
I understand, AT&T has a package of voices that are supposed to be quite good
but they're well over $300. Go with InfoVox. They have a 30-day trial period
although mine seemed to last only 2 weeks before I started getting an incessant
reminder that the trial period was going to expire or something to that effect.
At any rate, the 2 weeks was more than enough time to convince me that the
voices sounded great and worked well with VoiceOver.

Re: transfering documents through iTunes?

2010-04-11 Thread olivia norman
I have a me.com account as well, I'm actually talking about things like text
files, not the notes feature.
I actually do find my mobile me account useful with the iPad, the macs and the
iPhone, it's great to sync contacts, etc, quickly and easily. I need to play
with iDisk and see how accessible that is.

Re: NLS DTB players, usb flash drives, formating on a mac, cartrage errors Help?

2010-04-11 Thread Jenny Kennedy(Howard)
Good morning everyone,

Thanks for the suggestion of the kingston data traveler I plan to
obtain one as soon as I am able. What size is best? Also why will
the two flash drives I currently have format and work fine in the dtb
player if they are formated on a windows computer but give me cartrage
errors galore if done on a Mac? And Jesssica I have the same weird
problem you spoke to. I'll remove books off a flash drive but the
flash drive still is full even tho there are no dtbs on it. What's up
with that? And apart from reformatting the silly thing is there
anything to be done for it? Sorry so full of questions... I am very
thankful for the help :-)

Window switching shortcuts with VoiceOver on the Mac [was Re: Something interesting I found in safari possibly works in other apps]

2010-04-11 Thread Esther

Hi Jessica,

The shortcut sequence you posted of Command+Accent to cycle through
open windows in applications with VoiceOver on the Mac works for all
applications, including the Terminal, but since this was posted to the
viphone list instead of macvisionaries, of which you're also a member,
I've changed the subject line in my reply, and I'm following up with a
reply to both lists. Yes, this is a useful tip, and cycling through
open application windows with Command+Accent is a fast way to switch
windows that is analogous to using Command+Tab to switch through open
applications. In the case of both these shortcuts, holding down the
Shift key while using the shortcut reverses the order in which you
cycle. It would be interesting if the keyboard shortcuts for the iPad
eventually accommodate similar shortcuts, since these are general Mac
OS X shortcuts that are not VoiceOver specific. The OS 4.0 keynote
announcement that described fast switching between apps (in a multi-
tasking environment) for the iPhone and iPad might use something like
this on the keyboard. More likely, there would be a rotor setting for
switching windows or documents in Pages, Numbers, or Keynote
productivity apps.

Getting back to discussing window switching and selection with
VoiceOver on the Mac, it's probably helpful to state when you
specifically want to use the VoiceOver window chooser menu option (VO
+F2 twice) instead of Command+Accent. The window chooser menu
shortcut (hold down the VoiceOver Control+Option keys, then tap the F2
key two times, and select the window) works in instances where you
need to accept a license or registration agreement for software
installation and are prompted to do so in another window. It also
works for instances where VoiceOver has for some reason lost the focus
of your current window and you want to get back to it. There are also
a few odd instances where using the window chooser menu gives you
access to other functions: when you're in Finder and working with a
few third-party apps you've installed, such as DropBox (for cross-
platform file sharing), for example. Third-Party applications such
as DropBox and JustNotes (one of the free desktop counterpoints for
the Simplenote app on the iPhone/iPod Touch that allows automatic note
syncing/updating between your computer and the app on your iPhone) can
normally be accessed through an icon on the Mac's status menu bar.
However, there's a limitation or accessibility bug in the present API
procedures that doesn't give VoiceOver access to these. For a few
applications, like DropBox and JustNotes, using the window chooser
menu (VO+F2 twice) will bring these up in the menu as "untitled". And
if you select "untitled" you will be routed to the application as
though you had navigated to the icon on the status menu bar. So if
you install DropBox on your Mac and are using it to share files,
you'll need to use the window chooser menu to navigate to this.
Another point of confusion is that each of these app entries gets
labeled as "untitled" in the window chooser menu, so I'm happy that I
can use NotationalVelocity instead of the JustNotes beta to update
notes from my computer to the Simplenote app on my iPod Touch.

HTH and was not too confusing.

Cheers,

Esther

in any case. Just thought I would share this for anyone who may not

I generally learn as I go. so there is a huge chance you all knew

Re: help with scanning in abby finereader

2010-04-11 Thread William Windels
Hi Jim,

I have also bought abby finereader but I am still waiting for me scanner :
canon 700f lied...

I have no experiences so far with scanning on mac osx with abby fine reader...

As I understand well, you have a automator script that looks for the scanned
image and start to och that?

If you can give it privately or on the list this would be nice...

The filenames of the scanned pages should have a fixt name so that automator
can find them or is it based on alocation?

also, after the ocr-proces, has converted the scanned pages , the tekst is
directly showed on this screen?

Thanx for your answer,
best regards,

Re: NLS DTB players, usb flash drives, formating on a mac, cartrage errors Help?

2010-04-11 Thread Jessica and Trish the Golden Dog
hey. the datatraveler. I have a 4 gig one. and with average material
you can get 40 plus books/magazines on it. With smaller books you will
get more books on it and with larger books less.
For me the 4 gig is great. For others who want more space they may want
an 8 gig.
I cannot answer the formatting issue though. I format this one on my
mac and it does fine formatting it via the ms dos fat formatting. So
not sure what is going on there.
And I also insert my usb thumb drive into the cartridge slot. Although
it is small and hard to get in there. But I hate it sticking out of the
side of the machine. I just be as gentle as possible until it slides in
as easy as anything and then I keep it there until I wish to add
another book/magazine to it.
Personally I think a 4 gig kingston is fine. Because really when you
have 42 books on there. or moree or less it can get tedious going from
book to book really. so for me my opinion is the less books the better.
But I know certain people would disagree with me on that.
It also takes quite a while to load up the drive if you have a ton on
it. so I personally think 4 gig is best. And cheapest really. If you
want more you can always get another 4 gig drive.
If you have a ton of books on the thing it can take a while to load
them up. If you just have 14 to 20 it is very quick. So personally I
would say definitely stay 4 gig or lower. I think personally that 1 and
1 gig are to small. at least with 4 you have room to put an entire
series maybe. Depending on how big the files are.

Re: extra voices

2010-04-11 Thread Slau Halatyn
Well, it's a bit unusual. You see, they don't actually sell the voices, per se.
They do, however, offer a software developers' toolkit for that price and that
includes all of the voices. I think there are something like 27 voices, if I
remember correctly. The idea is, if you were to develop software, the voices
could be packaged with the program as in the case with something like Kurzweil
1000. Thing is, there's nothing to stop you from simply buying the SDK,
installing the voices on your system and never actually developing any
software. This was pointed out to me by aT&T themselves. Anyway, I haven't
really heard the voices but they're supposed to be pretty good.

One thing to consider, though, is that, while they're OS X compatible, that
doesn't necessarily mean they'd work well with VoiceOver. It would be
interesting to find out but I don't think there's any trial version.

Re: extra voices

2010-04-11 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

The Cepstral voices are not stable at all. Though they are listed as
compatible, they crash a lot, and are extremely sluggish. I personally don't
think they are that good or clear, but then, I am picky.

When it comes to AT&T, I have not yet purchased them. Though, just from what I
can tell from samples and games utilizing this engine, not to mention trying
them on the Windows side is that, while they sound clear, they seem to sound
quite robotic. Their inflection goes all over the place.

I'd recommend Infovox iVox from http://www.assistiveware.com
They sound clear, and I have only heard them sound anywhere to just slightly
robotic one time. They are extremely responsive, as if they were voices built
into Mac OS X, such as Alex..

I, personally, still prefer Alex as my number one voice on the Mac for sure,
but Peter from Infovox definitely is a close second.

Re: help with scanning in abby finereader

2010-04-11 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi William!
I'm not sure if I still have the workflow. I'll check. Its not readily
available but might have backed it up. Not using abbyy at the moment. When
you use abbyy it asks you for a file to recognize and I just had the workflow
save the image as a certain file name and then have abbyy recognize. I believe
there is a bertter way to do it abut that was my 10 minute fix for scanning and
having it be as close to k1000 as possible
I'll see if I can find or recreate the workflow.

iPhone Recording Apps for Voice and Music [was Re: Voice Memos App]

2010-04-11 Thread Esther

Hi Karen,

I'll interleave answers after your questions. All instances that
refer to "double tap" can also use a split tap (where you touch a
button or field on the iPhone with one finger and tap with another
finger elsewhere on the screen). Alternatively, you could try the
Voxie Pro Recorder app ($1.99) for expanded capabilities over the
Voice Memos app (e.g., an Express mode where you shake your iPhone to
start and stop recordings, selectable recording quality, ability to
transfer recordings too large to email without having to connect and
sync your iPhone to your computer, add other label categories for your
memos and organize them by categories, etc.) Finally, I'll mention
some potentially professional recording/playback apps and hardware
solutions. Since this is a lengthy post, people who are only
interested in the use of Voice Memos can read the answers at the
beginning and skip the rest of the post. I'm also sending this to
macvisionaries and the vimac-audio groups.

Karen Poulakos wrote:

I have a few questions about the voice memos app that comes
installed on the IPhone.

1. Is there a limit to the length of time for a memo?
There's a limit to the maximum size of files that can be emailed from
the Voice Memos app. From reading elsewhere on the web, it's about 8
minutes. You can record longer memos, but you'll have to connect your
iPhone to your computer and sync it to transfer the files to iTunes,
where they'll show up in a Voice Memos playlist.

2. Is there a way of labeling the memos?

Yes, to label memos:
1. Double tap the "Show Recordings Button" at the bottom right of the
screen for a list of recordings, ordered by date.
2. Run your finger down the list to select a memo, then flick right to
the "More Info" button and double tap.

3. On the "Info" page, double tap your memo entry to add a label
4. On the "Label" page, double tap the category to add a Label (or
leave the selection checked as "None"). There's also a "Custom"
option at the bottom of the page that will bring up a virtual keyboard
and allow you to type in your own label. Double tap the "Done" button
at the bottom right of the keyboard, and you're finished with labeling.
3. What is the best way to stop Vo from speaking while recording a
message?
To stop VO from speaking, mute speech with a three finger double tap.
Then use a two finger double tap to start/stop the recording. You'll
hear a single tone when the recording starts, and a double tone when
it ends. Unmute speech again with a three finger double tap.

There might even be a better way to accomplish what I am thinking
about trying. I have just begun taking harp lessons. While I was
practicing yesterday, it occurred to me that possibly my teacher
could record the pieces she would like me to practice on my IPhone,
rather than using a tape recorder. Since I'm just beginning,
they're not very long. I tried playing a few notes into the phone,
and it picked up pretty well. Any suggestions?

An alternative to having to mute/unmute speech for the controls is to
get Voxie Pro Recorder and configure its settings to use Express mode
(shake the iPhone or iPod Touch to start and stop recordings -- you'll
hear a rising or falling pitch chime as a signal). I'll give the link
to the app, and to a few posts about using Voxie that were archived on
the macvisionaries list. Note that this app also has a text
transcription service that can be purchased as a monthly add-on. Most
of the low ratings are from people who expected transcription to be
free.

One limitation of using the Voice Memos (or Voxie Pro Recorder) for
music recording is that there's only 16 bit support through the
headphone jack, but that still might be enough for your purposes. To
record higher quality music in stereo, you need to use a microphone
that attaches to the dock connector port of your iPhone. Some of these
can be quite pricey, but the new Blue Mikey 2 recorder ($99 list,
available from Sweetwater) seems to be an interesting option that
reviewed well in the recent version 2 release. (Note that if you
check most sources, like Amazon, they'll still be selling the original
Blue Mikey recorder, which costs less, but which may have some issues
in how well it stays connected to the iPhone

Re: NLS DTB players, usb flash drives, formating on a mac, cartrage errors Help?

2010-04-11 Thread Joan Alice Maria Gibson, Esquire
Before I tried downloading an NLSdtb, The Tech person at the Talking Book
Library [phoenix, Arizona] told me first how to upgrade the thumb drive [he
recommends only using no more than a 2 gigabyte as it can take a 4 gigabyte
max but the dtbm has to work much harder to mount it; and, he said not to
use more than a 4 gigabyte. You may want to talk to the Tech person from the
local Talking Book Library or the one who mails you your books for how to
download the Mac Upgrade. I have forgot how to do it.

I prefer the Kingston Data Traveler always but have used a Duracell 2
gigabyte without problems and Sandisk 2 gigabyte thumb drive without
problems. I always delete the books from the drive, empty the Mac's trash,
then remove the drive if I do not want to listen to them again. Never any
problems. BTW, the dtbm is PC formatted with an older version Windows.

My only problem is that if I have more than 2 books on the drive, the dtbm
will not let me choose other than the first one. Any suggestions?

but it is good to know it works. Happy days for sure, now I don't have
to scramble for a windows computer. LOL Was going to walk my aunt
through formatting the 4GB on her windows computer... She's in her
sixties and claims to be stupid in regards to computers. LOL She's not
stupid, but computers are kind of a new thing for her I'm guessing.
LOL She said when she hears the word computer she has stress. Now I
don't have to stress her. LOL Thanks again guys this is awesome.

multi select list boxes in safari

2010-04-11 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

I've come across a webpage which has raised an interesting issue for me. Is
there a way to use multi-select list boxes using VO and Safari?

For those who haven't come across these, they are a form of UI element in which
the user can select either a contiguous group of elements or indeed a
non-continuous series. An example might be in a web site in which you wished
to look at apartments to rent, using one of these UI elements you could select
the areas you wished to look in.

I haven't encountered one of these form controls very much but seeing it used
has made me wonder how VO users have found them.

Cheers

Well as some people said the library people said no more than 4 gigs.
I think you can do more than that. But I would not go up to 8 gigs of content.
Besides who wants to arrow left and right through a hundred plus books?
To bring up the book list you press and hold down the play key till it
says bookshelf. then depending on the player I don't know what you do
with the standard. with the advanced you hit the previous or next
buttons till you get the book you want and then hit play. I usually
have to hit play twice for some reason. Maybe because I don't wait till
it has finished reading the title.

Hope this helps answer the questions some of you were asking.
Jessica

Re: extra voices

2010-04-11 Thread Esther

Hi Mary,

I have the Alyona Russian voice from Infovox on my Mac. You can try
out this voice, and other languages at the Assistiveware voice samples
page:

http://www.assistiveware.com/ivoxsamples.php

The actual purchasing process is a little complicated, since in the
U.S., and for North and South America in general, I think, the agent
is Origin Instruments in Texas, and you're directed to their web
pages. They sell all the voices and bundles that Assistiveware offers,
but they only list a few of these. In fact, Russian only got added to
the menu after I purchased the voice from them when it first came out.

The other thing is that the bundles get progressively cheaper as you
buy more voices, even when you don't buy them all at once but just as
add-ons, and there are options like household licenses that allow you
to use the voices you purchase on multiple computers, too.

Here's a link to an archived post that outlines some of this:
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg05312.html
(Summary Information on Heather and other Infovox voice purchase
options from U.S.)

There are also discussions more recently that you can find in the
Archives -- most notably some post exchanges from the Fall when Donna
was asking about buying voices.

The AT&T SDK has been around for ages -- like nearly as long as this
list has been in existence. I'm surprised there isn't something else
commercially available, but I haven't seen it. The Cepstral voices
had the same problems of making VoiceOver unstable when they were
first introduced (way back in Tiger). They generally fix this, but
they're unstable again under Snow Leopard. The other voices I've
tried are by Cereproc in the U.K. I liked the accents (Scottish
voices with accents from the Edinburgh end of the country), but they
made my VoiceOver crash. Even weirder, when I tried using the "say"
command to script time, etc. in Terminal, they'd fill the Terminal
windows with weird characters.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

 Mary Otten wrote:

reference to anything like that in hunting for voices. I'm always on
the look out for quality voices inespecially in Russian.

RE: NLS DTB players, usb flash drives, formating on a mac, cartrage errors Help?

2010-04-11 Thread Linda Adams
JG,

In response to your question about accessing more than the first book on
the drive, I wasn't sure if you had the problem with just two books on
the drive or only when more than 2 books were on the drive.
When I tried putting 2 books on my drive, I could only access the first
one and checked with my library. I had received the standard model and
it would only recognize one book from the drive. After loading the
latest version 2.1.3 dated November, it worked just like Jessica
described. Hold down the play button and it will take you to the
bookshelf.

So, it all depends on whether your DBTM was shipped before this upgrade.

Here is the NLS web site to upgrade your player if necessary.

Before I tried downloading an NLSdtb, The Tech person at the Talking
Book Library [phoenix, Arizona] told me first how to upgrade the thumb
drive [he recommends only using no more than a 2 gigabyte as it can take
a 4 gigabyte max but the dtbm has to work much harder to mount it; and,
he said not to use more than a 4 gigabyte. You may want to talk to the
Tech person from the local Talking Book Library or the one who mails you
your books for how to download the Mac Upgrade. I have forgot how to do
it.

I prefer the Kingston Data Traveler always but have used a Duracell 2
gigabyte without problems and Sandisk 2 gigabyte thumb drive without
problems. I always delete the books from the drive, empty the Mac's
trash, then remove the drive if I do not want to listen to them again.
Never any problems. BTW, the dtbm is PC formatted with an older version
Windows.

My only problem is that if I have more than 2 books on the drive, the
dtbm will not let me choose other than the first one. Any suggestions?

Re: NLS DTB players, usb flash drives, formating on a mac, cartrage errors Help?

2010-04-11 Thread Frank Tom
Hi there,

I don't know anything about windows formating, but I do about the NLS player.
I use 4 gjig thumbn drives without any problems. I insert them in the same slot
as the regular cartridges go. This way they are protected; a little more
difficult to get them in and out but a lot safer. According to NLS, larger
thumb drives will give you a problem.

I bought a three pack at Costco for around 30 dollars.

I was sure hoping for an I Phone daisy NLS app but I don't think it will ever
happen.

iPad help.

2010-04-11 Thread Jesse Bollinger

Hi all,

I just got my iPad today. I have been able to move through a row of
apps but how do I move to different parts of the screen? I was in
iBooks and it kept reading the same section. I couldn't figure out how
to interact with another part of the screen. This is long-winded but
I'm not sure how else to describe it. So in short, how do I move
around the different screen sections?

Thanks and I hope I explained well enough,

Call me stupid, but I am not really sure what your question is and I am at a
disadvantage as I don't use vo on a regular basis. In iBook if you tap at the
top of a page I'm told that the entire will be read. The vo will read
paragraphs one at a time. The iPad is neat but it will take you a little time
to get acclimated. Will assist in whatever fashion I can. Good luck with your

Re: iPad help.

2010-04-11 Thread Esther
Hi Jesse,

VoiceOver has a set of new gestures for moving through sections, with four
finger flicks. In iBooks, you should have been able to read continuously. I
remember that I could also set the rotor to read line by line. There was a
page control at the bottom of each page that would let you jump to an arbitrary
page. You touched this, then set the rotor so you could change the value, and
flicked to change the page value. I think I also did a pass-through double tap
and hold, then dragged the position to do a large page jump. Sorry not to be
more helpful, but I only got to play with the iPad twice for short times in the
Apple Store last week.

As a suggestion, download the iPad Manual from:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPad_User_Guide.pdf
and read Chapter 16 on Accessibility (pp. 105-115). I'll paste in the part
about gestures. The first part about Navigate and Read has the new gestures:

Here’s a summary of VoiceOver gestures:
Navigate and Read

• Tap: Speak item.

• Flick right or left: Select the next or previous item.

• Flick up or down: The effect varies depending on the Rotor Control setting.
See “Using VoiceOver” on page 110.

• Two-finger tap: Stop speaking the current item.

• Two-finger flick up: Read all, from the top of the screen.

• Two-finger flick down: Read all, from the current position.

• Three-finger flick up or down: Scroll one page at a time.

• Three-finger flick right or left: Go to the next or previous page (such as
the Home
screen or Safari).

• Three-finger tap: Speak the scroll status (which page or rows are visible).

• Four-finger flick up or down: Go to the first or last element on a page.

• Four-finger flick right or left: Go to the next or previous section (for
example,
on a webpage).

Select and Activate

• Double-tap: Activate selected item.

• Touch an item with one finger, tap the screen with another finger
(“split-tapping”):
Activate item.

• Double-tap and hold (1 second) + standard gesture: Use a standard gesture.
The double-tap and hold gesture tells iPad to interpret the subsequent gesture
as
standard. For example, you can double-tap and hold, and then without lifting
your
finger, drag your finger to slide a switch.
You can use standard gestures when VoiceOver is turned on, by double-tapping
and
holding your finger on the screen. A series of tones indicates that normal
gestures
are in force. They remain in effect until you lift your finger, then VoiceOver
gestures
resume.

• Two-finger double tap: Play or pause in iPod, YouTube, Voice Memos, or
Photos.
Start or pause recording in Voice Memos. Start or stop the stopwatch.

• Three-finger double tap: Mute or unmute VoiceOver.

• Three-finger triple tap: Turn the display on or off.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

Re: NLS DTB players, usb flash drives, formating on a mac, cartrage errors Help?

2010-04-11 Thread Jenny Kennedy(Howard)
Here's my trick for sticking flash drives down the front of the dtbm.
Get drives that have a cap that has a hole that you can put a will one
of those straps around your neck. I just get one of the thinner hair
ties and thread it through the hole on the cap of the flash drive.
Some drives have a cap that flips around and it is always attached but
the 2gb I have the cap is removible or it was until I taped it to the
body of the flash drive. You have to fish around and poke a bit to
get the drive to go into the slot but it isn't bad. When you want to
remove it just pull on the hair tie and there you are. COuld use the
port on the side but I dislike the drive sticking way out to the
side... HTH.

Re: extra voices

2010-04-11 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Esther,
Yes, I bought the Aliona russian voice just after I bought my Mac. I'd like a
male voice. I've heard one from another company, I think its a capella but it
might be Loquendo, I can't remember, that is the best one I've ever heard, but
its not available for use on a mac or with a Windows screen reader either. The
Aliona voice is pretty good, certainly better than what I've used in the past.
