I believe so but not sure. just go to view and then sort by thread. then choose
to expand or collapse the threads.

I hope this answers your question and I hope I understood what you wanted.

Take care.

As I've posted before, I can't wait for the new version of pro tools 9, as I
have heard of accessibility improvements being done. I'm not much a
journalist, but I'd imagine you'd use the same editing techniques as you
would to remaster a song. I'm hoping to get myself into a professional audio

drop me a note privately, and I will connect you with the university

I love this list, truly I do. I appreciate the talent and wisdom you guys

That and frustrating outspoken issues that have me working around it these

Words in all Caps

2010-03-10 Thread Kimberly thurman
I hope everyone is doing well today. I have a question. What and
where do I need to change something to make VO pronounce text written in all
caps as words and not by individual letters? Some folks type their subject
lines in all upper case letters and VO reads through them letter by letter so
fast it is impossible to
recognize the words.

As always, thanks for all the brilliant answers you guys provide . You truly

Quicken Accessibility

2010-03-10 Thread E.J. Zufelt
Good afternoon,

I received the following response from an Intuit representative in the U.S.
regarding Quicken accessibility. They declined a request for a trial version
for testing.

***

Sorry, but we do not offer free software for testing outside of our Beta
process(es). If you and/or your clients purchase Quicken Essentials and
discover that it is incompatible with your application, you can return it
within 60 days for a refund.

Quicken Essentials was not specifically designed with VoiceOver in mind, but
if VO is capable of converting text to speech regardless of what application is
generating that text, then I would expect at least some of that same
functionality with Quicken Mac product(s). Where I see concern is where the VO
would encounter graphic images such as bank logos, scanned attachments and/or
Graphs (from Reports & Graphs).

Hope this gives you at least a little more information.

Thanks,
Everett Zufelt

Re: Words in all Caps

2010-03-10 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Kim,

I don't know whether this will help, but I'm not seeing this behaviour. My
suggestion is to go into Mail Preferences (Command-Comma), Interact with the
Toolbar and select Composing. You will find a popup menu labelled Message
Format, select Plain text then close Mail preferences.

I know that this improves VO's reading of HTML messages, but whether it fixes
your particular problem remains to be seen.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: possible other audio editor...for journalists at least?

2010-03-10 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi Krister,

That's kind of a big question but I'll try to answer it as concisely as I can.

Pro Tools comes in 2 basic flavors: TDM and host-based. The current TDM system
is called HD and is the most expensive but most expandable system found in
studios.

The host-based systems can be broken down into LE and M-Powered systems. The LE
systems require Digidesign hardware to run Pro Tools. There's the MBoxII,
MBoxII Pro, Digi003 and Digi 003 Rack. These interfaces range from around $500
to around $3,000 depending on certain software bundles, etc. Each interface has
its own limitations as far as input/output but all are capable of playing back
up to 48 stereo tracks.

The M-Powered systems use M-Audio interfaces and range from somewhere around
$250 for a dongle-like interface up to around $1,300 for a control surface. If
you have an M-Audio interface already, it's possible to just buy Pro Tools
software for around $199.

While it won't be necessary to use a control surface to access Pro tools, there
are compelling reasons to use a surface for speed and accuracy. For example,
trying to record fader automation with keystrokes is way more cumbersome and
far less accurate than simply moving a fader and recording the movement. Also,
editing audio with a scrub wheel like on the Digi 003 is an absolute breeze. Of
course, it can be done without the scrub wheel but, once you've done it that
way, you'll never want to go back.

Hopefully that answers your question a bit. Feel free to contact me off list if
you have more questions.

Cheers,

Slau

RE: possible other audio editor...for journalists at least?

2010-03-10 Thread Cameron
Hi. Yes, you need a hardware device to run pro tools. You can also buy pro
tools m powered, which will work with certain m audio interfaces including
the project mix control surface/interface.

All the packages I'll list include pro tools as well as various plug ins
etc. for pro tools le setups, the most basic is the m box 2 mini, which is
a uSB interface. that package usually sells for approx $295. Next, you've
got the m box 2, $449, which is USB, then the m box pro, $699, which is
firewire. All the interfaces from there on out are firewire. You've got
the 003r which is a 2u rack interface, starting at around $1199, then the
003 which is an interface and control surface with motorized faders, that
starts at a bit over $2k. the factory and factory complete bundles of those
interfaces have more plug ins... there is also the command 8, which is just
a dedicated control surface...

moving up from there, you've got the control 24, which is around $25k... and
tdm systems, unlike le systems, require PCI cards which handle dsp
processing and audio i/o...

I hope that gives you a bit of an idea.

Cameron.

2010-03-10 Thread Slau Halatyn
Well, when you say, are the M-Audio interfaces accessible, I'm assuming you're
asking whether the software to configure the interface is accessible. The
answer, for now, is no. Thing is, M-Audio is aware of the issue and will
address it. I'm sure it won't be for several months but I'm pretty sure they'll
make the M-Audio control panel accessible in the future.

Cheers,

Slau

RE: Apple Job Opening - Accessibility Software Quality Engineer

2010-03-10 Thread Bryan Smart
If you're the Mark BurningHawk that I know from the AGRIP list, then it
probably wouldn't have worked out, anyway. I'm pretty sure that particular Mark
doesn't have an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. *smile* If that's not
you, then apologies.

Apple has already employed blind devs. I've known a few. A buddy of mine was
with them for several years. Him and I used to spend time during our teens
putting Apple II and Mac screen readers through disassembler tools and manually
hacking in modifications with a byte editor. That's the kind of people that
they need. I'm really disappointed that he chose to move on and accept another
offer. I would have liked to have been there, but I was working for Microsoft
at the time, and I have a life now that I wouldn't leave for even cool work
like this.

Apple will absolutely hire a blind dev, but they won't hire someone for this
type of position just to be the equivalent of a full time beta tester, a Mac
accessibility advocate, or booster. The Computer Science and QA skills are
essential.

RE: latest Quicken apparently written in Cocoa

2010-03-10 Thread Bryan Smart
I seem to remember that Google has free evaluation copies of nearly everything.
I think how you do it is to search for the name of the program that you want to
evaluate, and follow it with the wort "torrent". *smile*

If you like it, and use it, then buy it. However, there is no need to wait
weeks for the chance to try it, or else buy it, find out that it isn't
accessible, and struggle to get a refund.

Subject: Quicken Essentials for Mac now available

Source: The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)

Author: Michael Grothaus

After a four year absence
 , the
next version of Quicken for the Mac is here. It's called Quicken Essentials for
Mac

and is a ground up Cocoa rewrite. I've been using the program for a few weeks
now. Is it worth the wait? Well that depends what you need in your financial
software.

When I interviewed

Aaron Patzer, VP/GM of Intuit's Personal Finance Group, he was quick to point
out that it's called Quicken Essentials for a reason: "It's called Essentials
because it's what we consider to be essential for most users - about 80% of
users. We went to people's homes and watched them use it. The majority of them
just want to know: How much do I have? How much do I owe? How much do I spend
on gas and food? How many times do I go to this restaurant? How many times do I
go to Starbucks? What investments do I have? Let me set a budget to control my
spending."

If an easy overview of your financial life is the goal
Intuit had in mind, they've outdone themselves. The first thing you'll notice
is the completely redesigned interface. Gone is the horrible toolbar navigation
with multiple windows. Quicken Essentials has got that familiar streamlined
iTunes/iLife look and feel with all your accounts, reports, budgets, and tools
nicely displayed in a source list. It's single window interface makes it easy
for the user to get a complete snapshot of all their finances. The interactive
pie charts are snappy and responsive, and the built-in reports make it easy to
view your checking, savings, and investing accounts.
Perhaps the most standout feature of this revamp is the
improved categorization that takes a ton of work off the plate of the user. The
guys at Quicken have developed a learning algorithm for Quicken Online that
allows users to self-tag, with the Quicken Online software remembering those
tags and then applying them to other people's data. The more people who use it,
the smarter the tagging gets. In my te

Yeah, I wonder. This is one reason I want boot camp on the Mac. I might have
to take my chances with XP licenses bought on Ebay. I think if it comes to

That's the one thing that gets flakey, I heard, audio and VMWare.

NLS Books

2010-03-10 Thread Rich Ring

I know that many people on this list are not from the United States, and
I also know that many others on this list consider NLS books to be "getto"
books, nonetheless, I ask my question.
I need to teach someone how to download NLS books and unzip them to a thumb

Can anyone help me with this? The person in question has access to a Mac,
but not to a Windows machine.
So, what they will need to do is download the book and unzip the book to a
thumb drive attached to their Mac.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

2010-03-10 Thread Karen Lewellen

I have one very strong piece of advice for you.
Unless you want to risk this individuals rights to service, you
absolutely must direct this question, including telling the service that
you asked on this list to the nls arena that manages downloads.
I have no idea why anyone would think nls books are ghetto, the collection
is rather diverse actually.
However I do understand NLS has good reason to be paranoid about the
digital collection, and has put protections that prevent anyone from
getting books who are not supposed to have them.
I have the link to the list service somewhere, but am sure you can find it
at

www.loc.gov/nls.
hope this helps,

Re: NLS Books

2010-03-10 Thread Slau Halatyn
1. They need to log in to the NLS BARD site, assuming they're already
registered with the library.

2. Find the book using the search facility of the site.

3. Simply click on the link that says "Download (book title, whatever that
might be." By default, the zipped file will download to the specified download
folder, usually, not surprisingly, the Download folder.

4. Navigate to the downloaded file in the Finder and open the file with
Command-o. This will unzip the file.

5. Copy the decompressed file folder and navigate to the thumb drive on the
desktop.

6. Open the thumb drive with Command-o and press Command-v to paste the book
onto the thumb drive.
