Slau,
Are you saying that the M audio interfaces are actually accessible? I've got
a mackie pro fx 12 channel mixer and I like it everything is tactile and is
easy to use.

Hi Krister,
That's kind of a big question but I'll try to answer it as concisely as I
can.
Pro Tools comes in 2 basic flavors: TDM and host-based. The current TDM
system is called HD and is the most expensive but most expandable system
found in studios.
The host-based systems can be broken down into LE and M-Powered systems. The
LE systems require Digidesign hardware to run Pro Tools. There's the MBoxII,
MBoxII Pro, Digi003 and Digi 003 Rack. These interfaces range from around
$500 to around $3,000 depending on certain software bundles, etc. Each
interface has its own limitations as far as input/output but all are capable
of playing back up to 48 stereo tracks.
The M-Powered systems use M-Audio interfaces and range from somewhere around
$250 for a dongle-like interface up to around $1,300 for a control surface.
If you have an M-Audio interface already, it's possible to just buy Pro
Tools software for around $199.
While it won't be necessary to use a control surface to access Pro tools,
there are compelling reasons to use a surface for speed and accuracy. For
example, trying to record fader automation with keystrokes is way more
cumbersome and far less accurate than simply moving a fader and recording
the movement. Also, editing audio with a scrub wheel like on the Digi 003 is
an absolute breeze. Of course, it can be done without the scrub wheel but,
once you've done it that way, you'll never want to go back.
Hopefully that answers your question a bit. Feel free to contact me off list
if you have more questions.
Cheers,
Slau

Hi Slau and others on the list,
Isn't pro tools very expensive, and does it need any special equipment,
such as sound cards, control surfaces etc?

it's out.

Hi Cody,
bTW, it's not version 9 but version 8.0.4 which will be accessible.
That's the next version scheduled for release this Spring.

As I've posted before, I can't wait for the new version of pro tools 9,
as I have heard of accessibility improvements being done. I'm not much
a journalist, but I'd imagine you'd use the same editing techniques as
you would to remaster a song. I'm hoping to get myself into a
professional audio course in college here in Maine and if anyone has
any help/suggestions please let me know.

Hi,
Most of those issues with audacity are fixed in the new accessible
version for Mac. Here goes the link.

Hi,
As a matter of fact, i'm in contact with the developer of Hindenburg.
As it stands right now, it's not accessible, the journalist edition
looks like i remember Audacity, many unknowns. The developer is aware
of this and is working on the a11y both of the app and the Journalist
for the Mac.

Hi folks,
I have shared with some privately that one of my worries about the
new accessible-tools is that it will not features important to those
of us who work in broadcast journalism need the same way we have
them addressed in the present pro tools structure.
Pro tools is an industry standard in journalism too, so both the
musician and the reporter have a steak in it.
Anyway, a friend of mine sent me another program option.
its called
Hindenburg Journalist. there is a field recorder option too.
My question is if anyone has seen this, how workable is it now?
if not at all, the program is still under development, meaning wise
minds can have a role in this. Its still free right now too.
here is the site.

if that's wrong, yell i am a little tired.
