Did you upgrade recently? I had a problem with my own layouts, as the
standard layouts now include list.inc for these environments.

Try to temporarily rename ~/.lyx to something else. If this brings back the
listings, move back your customized layouts one by one and see where it
brakes (or do a diff between your layouts and the corresponding standard
layout).

Certainly. This was the first item in the 'status.13x' and ANNOUNCE files
that were distributed with LyX 1.3.4:

- it is now possible to open documents which use a textclass for
  which no LaTeX support is installed. The documents can be normally
  edited, but they can of course be neither previewed nor printed. Note
  that the format of the file .lyx/textclasses.lst has changed as a
  consequence and it is therefore not possible to use LyX 1.3.4 and an
  earlier version with the same .lyx/ directory.

The error message you report is symptomatic of your use of the 1.3.3
versions of textclasses.lst, which LyX 1.3.5 no longer understands.

So, to run LyX 1.3.3 and LyX 1.3.5 side by side, you need two sepatate
".lyx" directories. You can achieve this by running configure with one of:

  --program-prefix=PREFIX   prepend PREFIX to installed program names
  --program-suffix=SUFFIX   append SUFFIX to installed program names
  --with-version-suffix=  install lyx files as lyx

Personally, I use 
$ ../configure --with-version-suffix --with-pspell

which results in my different versions of LyX creating these directories:
/home/angus/.lyx-1.3.5cvs  /home/angus/.lyx-1.4.0cvs

The '#' will be replaced by the figure number automatically in the
output. You do not have to enter any number manually there.

explanation on how the underlying algorith work, which is the basic
design, what are the main components.
Is there anything simpler that the original Knuth books?

What exactly didn't worrk ?
If you don't use TeXLive, hiding distrib files in texmf-local won't work
of course.
Tuning translations in frenchb.cfg  *should* work
(with \usepackage[frenchb]{babel})

Google says that it has been translated in English:

No, the problem is in latex-xft-fonts and Qt. When running in russian 
locale, Qt refuses to load fonts from latex-xft-fonts, due to a strange 
way Qt uses to detect which fornts should be available for application.
As documented in README in latex-xft-fonts, it is a known problem that 
trooltech refuses to fix.

One day (several months ago) I was tired with lyx-qt math editor being 
unusable in russian locale, and tried to dig into. I wrote to 
latex-xft-fonts package creators, asking for details. I got the following 
reply:

Then I looked at qt sources, and found all that things in qfont_x11.cpp
I failed to understand why the do so, and decided to give up (noting in my 
todo that one day I should think more).
Yesterday I found that todo, and realized that I may fool Qt by resetting 
LC_TIME. Not much things actually use LC_TIME, so I hope it should not 
break anything. I tried it, and it worked.
So I wrote to several lists about it, and enabled workaround on systems 
that I administer (our users use lyx sometimes; until now they had to use 
either xforms version or qt version without russian locale).
Unfortunately, today one of our users reported that lyx-qt (installed from 
debian binary package 1.3.4-2) crashes every other minute for him, until 
restarted with LC_ALL=C.
I was not able to reproduce crashes (however, I can't say I tried very 
hard). I don't know if it related to running lyx-qt in a "mixed" locale, 
or just to running it in russian locale, or completely unrelated (e.g. it 
crashes on user's particular document).
Currently I'm rebuilding the package with debugging symbols enabled; I'll 
ask the user to try this version and try to get a coredump of the crash.
I'll report the results.

find how to get the symbol for a sector (a slice of pie shaped region).

I removed my old LyX 1.3.3 installation with its .lyx folder but still facing 
the same problem. Any hint?

  You are aware that this is not a usual need? :-)

absence of an advanced search and replace feature inside lyx.

Read the error message:

LyX: Bad boolean `amsart-seq'. Use "false" or "true" [around line 6 of 
file /usr/share/lyx/textclass.lst]

Ok? This file is part of your 1.3.3 installation. You have a choice:

1. Remove all of your 1.3.3. installation, enabling you to run 1.3.5 from
its local installation. Whereever you compiled it.

2. Install 1.3.5, which will overwrite the contents of /usr/share/lyx

3. configure --with-version-suffix, which will lead to 1.3.5 looking for
its stuff either in
/lib
$HOME/.lyx-1.3.5cvs
or in
/usr/share/lyx-1.3.5cvs
$HOME/.lyx-1.3.5cvs
depending on whether you install the thing or not.

However, even for the "usual" need of reverting to the version on disk it
would not make sense to overwrite the file you are intending to load! A
warning that you loose your content could be sensible though.

OTHOH, I don't think it is that unusal. Quite regularely on this list I
see sed or perl scripts working on the lyx source to solve a particular
problem.

Not really, as this was just one example for the manifold uses of
external editing. Remember the Unix philosophy of small dedicated tools
working together instead of one app does all.
